Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

This is another concert of a series that is a mix of very good Jazz interspaced with educational commentary by Wynton. To learn more about about Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra here is their web site

Enjoy, Jack

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis perform the music of four pioneering giants of jazz—Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, and Charles Mingus—in Duke, Dizzy, ‘Trane & Mingus: Jazz Titans. Duke, Dizzy, ‘Trane, and Mingus singularly pursued ancestral music, particularly from Africa and Latin America, and used their discoveries to broaden the horizons of their artistry and create new terrain for jazz. In this concert, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis play selections from Ellington’s Latin American Suite and Virgin Islands Suite; Coltrane’s Olé Coltrane and Africa Brass; Mingus’ Tijuana Moods; and various pieces from Gillespie’s early Afro-Cuban era through his later work with the United Nations band, showing his evolution from Afro-Cuban to a more expansive Afro-Latin idiom. The JLCO illuminates the historically important rhythmic distinctions, chant-based melodies, and modal soundscapes created as a result of these albums that forever changed the conception of the boundaries of jazz.

wapo:

The House voted Saturday on legislation to provide $25 billion to the U.S. Postal Service and explicitly prohibit any operational changes amid widespread Democratic fears that the Trump administration is trying to disenfranchise millions of Americans casting mail ballots this November.
The 257-to-150 vote was largely along party lines as Republicans accused Democrats of manufacturing “baseless conspiracy theories” about delays in postal deliveries to undermine President Trump’s reelection bid. The Republican-led Senate has no plans to act on the legislation, which the White House has threatened to veto.
Shortly before the vote, Trump tweeted: “Vote NO to the Pelosi/ Schumer money wasting HOAX which is taking place now.” Twenty-six Republicans broke ranks with Trump and the GOP leadership and joined Democrats in backing the bill.

The House, which had not planned to return to Washington until Sept. 14, was holding a rare Saturday session to debate and vote on the bill. In addition to the infusion of money for the cash-strapped agency, the legislation would ban the removal of mail-sorting machines and public mailboxes, reverse any operational changes that could delay service and mandate that all official election mail be considered “first class.”

[…]
The Republican-controlled Board of Governors of the Postal Service had requested an emergency appropriation of $25 billion earlier this year.
Moments after the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) issued a statement calling the House bill “the Speaker’s partisan stunt” and said “the Senate will absolutely not pass stand-alone legislation for the Postal Service while American families continue to go without more relief.”

Mitch, it doesn’t have to be “stand-alone” if you let senate tack on the House’s 3T stimulus bill you’ve stalled for 100 days.  the ball is in your court and, if you don’t act, blood of more covid deaths and fate of democracy are  on your hands.

in re brother dearest

wapo:

“All he wants to do is appeal to his base,” Barry said in a conversation secretly recorded by her niece, Mary L. Trump. “He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this.”
Barry, 83, was aghast at how her 74-year-old brother operated as president. “His goddamned tweet and lying, oh my God,” she said. “I’m talking too freely, but you know. The change of stories. The lack of preparation. The lying. Holy shit.”
Lamenting “what they’re doing with kids at the border,” she guessed her brother “hasn’t read my immigration opinions” in court cases. In one case, she berated a judge for failing to treat an asylum applicant respectfully.
“What has he read?” Mary Trump asked her aunt.
“No. He doesn’t read,” Barry responded.
[…]
At one point Barry said to her niece, “It’s the phoniness of it all. It’s the phoniness and this cruelty. Donald is cruel.”

more from that article:

In the weeks since Mary Trump’s tell-all book about her uncle has been released, she’s been questioned about the source of some of the information, such as her allegation that Trump paid a friend to take his SATs to enable him to transfer into the University of Pennsylvania. Nowhere in the book does she say that she recorded conversations with her aunt.
In response to a question from The Washington Post about how she knew the president paid someone to take the SATs, Mary Trump revealed that she had surreptitiously taped 15 hours of face-to-face conversations with Barry in 2018 and 2019. She provided The Post with previously unreleased transcripts and audio excerpts, which include exchanges that are not in her book.
[…]
The allegation that the president paid someone to take his SATs, which was one of the most publicized allegations in Mary Trump’s book “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created The World’s Most Dangerous Man,” stems from a conversation that Barry had with her niece on Nov. 1, 2018.

Barry told how she tried to help her brother get into college. “He was a brat,” Barry said, explaining that “I did his homework for him” and “I drove him around New York City to try to get him into college.”
Then Barry dropped what Mary considered a bombshell: “He went to Fordham for one year [actually two years] and then he got into University of Pennsylvania because he had somebody take the exams.”
“No way!” Mary responded. “He had somebody take his entrance exams?”

“SATs or whatever. . . . That’s what I believe,” Barry said. “I even remember the name.” That person was Joe Shapiro, Barry said.

that wapo story has a lot more quotes from auntie. fascinating family dynamics worth the read. NYTimes also covers the new “conversations with my aunt” story.

FYI, from justia.com

New York Under New York’s eavesdropping law, it is illegal to record in-person or telephone conversations without the consent of at least one party. Illegal recording is a felony. NY Penal L § 250.00§ 250.05 (definition & penalty)

patd, that NY law is common – same as here. NY is a “one party consent” state for recording others. Any party to a conversation (in person, telephone, …) may consent to recoding the conversation – or record it – and the other party has no right to know or say no.  If no party consents it is a violation of what used to be wiretapping laws, now expanded to cover almost any recorded conversation.

Claudia is pursuing emancipation status as a 16 year old which makes you wonder about daddy’s role in all this family drama.

Jack,  Great Sunday music.  Thank you.

Virtually every negative thing said about Trump in the Presidency was known about him decades ago.  I know there was a boatload of negative about Hillary (most false) and the defection of the Bernie & Jill crowd cut in to the battle ground states, but it still seems that more of Trump could have been exposed long before the gold plated tower trash rode down the escalator.

Bill Barr Reportedly Pressed Rupert Murdoch To ‘Muzzle’ Trump Critic Judge Napolitano On Fox Napolitano called Trump’s pressure on Ukraine’s president to investigate baseless accusations against Joe Biden “criminal and impeachable.”

Attorney General William Barr met last year with media mogul Rupert Murdoch to pressure him to “muzzle” Donald Trump critic Andrew Napolitano on Fox News, according to a new book out Tuesday.

Napolitano’s air time has dwindled as his criticism of Trump had increased over the last year.

Barr’s meeting with Murdoch, the executive chairman of Fox News’ parent company, at his New York home was widely reported at the time, but its purpose was not revealed. One aim of the meeting was to shut up Napolitano, according to the book “Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News, and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth,” written by CNN media reporter Brian Stelter.

So have you seen this

Tennessee protesters could now lose their right to vote under a new law Gov. Bill Lee (R) signed with little fanfare Thursday.

Protesters who camp out on state property, such as the activists who have demonstrated for months outside the state Capitol against racial injustice, could now face felony charges punishable by up to six years in prison. Convicted felons are automatically stripped of their voting rights in Tennessee.

The new law, which went into effect immediately, outraged civil rights groups, who say the move is Tennessee’s latest attempt to repress voting ahead of the November elections.

“The racial motivation underlying the law is undeniable,” said Kristen Clarke, president of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. “It’s a clear backlash response to the Black Lives Matter movement and to people who are decisively protesting racial injustice and police violence.”

Clarke said her organization is considering a sweeping lawsuit addressing all the ways she believes Tennessee Republicans are trying to suppress and intimidate voters.

“To criminalize protest activity and disenfranchise voters on top of it defies principles that lie at the heart of our Constitution,” she said. “It’s pouring fuel on the fire when communities are seeking justice, change and reform.”

Tennessee is among the states not allowing voters to use fear of the novel coronavirus as a reason to vote by mail. In the state, it is a crime to distribute mail-in ballot applications. Last year, a federal judge blocked a new Tennessee law that sought to restrict voter registration drives.
(Continues)

The TN law violates at least two amendments to the Constitution – the First for sure – and IMHO is subject to an injunction barring enforcement so long as the complaint has people whose right to vote would be impacted in order to ensure standing to challenge it.

Where the media fails is sometimes beyond obvious, like getting hit with a door.  The LA Times has an article headline stating the SFB succeeded on many of his 2016 campaign promises.  Success, right?  The LA Times has an AP article and it does go over a long list of what SFB and his minions have done.  One of the less successful has been the elimination of health care for millions.  The article does not state anything about Americans not wanting the destruction and attempt to eliminate Obama that SFB, bobble-head, miller and senmajldr are doing.

SFB even plays his spawn against each other. Ivanker is the favorite, so she doesn’t want to lose her place at the top of the sh/t pile.  Junior and Erik keep trying to please him, to be big enough a-holes to oust Ivanker.  Tiff is an outsider who just wants to be included.  (I’ll leave the other son be, as he is a minor.) Hungry New Yorkers form quarter-mile line for free food in Queens

The line stretched a quarter-mile before the sun was barely up Saturday, snaking around corners like bread lines in the 1930s. But the hungry in Queens are today’s New Yorkers, left jobless by the coronavirus.
Until the pandemic struck the city, La Jornada food pantry used to hand out groceries to roughly 1,000 families a week. Now, the number tops 10,000. And volunteers serve lunch every day to 1,000 — many of them kids with growling stomachs. Across the five boroughs, the hungry is in the hundreds of thousands, the Food Bank of New York estimates.

I like to watch people make ribs, and then eat some.   That’s how I like my ribs done, watching somebody else do it.   If I have to do it, it’s just going to be steaks, pork chops, hamberders, or hot dogs.

So we went home Thursday. First I rolled our car down about 15 feet.  I crawled out and walked home about mile.  Our neighbor came over in about an hour to make sure I was ok and said he would put a note on the car.  This is about 7 pm. At 11 about a million people show up. Someone had called 911.  There were 6 people from the local dept a chip officer and two paramedics wanted to go to the hospital.  I just wanted to back to bed.  They were concerned because my blood pressure seemed high. Wouldn’t yours be?  This includes being driven up our mile long hilly driveways in reverse.  I fine. I have a black eye and a stiff neck.   Because we have no signal we decided to leave again because it would be hard to get notification of evacuation. We went a friends in Villa Grande. While we were sitting the kitchen helping my friend and his 102 yo mother can tomatoes she slid off her chair on to the floor.  Ambulance called. On their way to hospital.  We are beginning to wonder if it’s us.   Mr Cracker’s birthday is tomorrow we hope nothing more happens.

Now, tRUMP thinks science is being used against him.  Convalescent plasma has been shown to help when used in patients who are really sick, sometimes.  This is not a cure-all for everyone who has any degree of COVID.  (There isn’t that much convalescent plasma nor would it help everyone.). Nor is oleander, which is toxic, but which his buddy the pillow hawker (and former coke addict) is now promoting; he has signed on as a member of the board of directors for the company promoting it.
So, the paranoid narcissist is flapping his gums wildly now…because Joe & Kamala’s interview will be in ABC tonight.
