  1. assassination attempts last week also brought to mind  (in last thread by fearless leader) the 1954 shootings in House

    the guardian:

Federal prosecutors have offered an ominous new assessment of last week’s siege of the US Capitol by Donald Trump’s supporters, saying in a court filing that rioters intended “to capture and assassinate elected officials”.

Prosecutors offered that view in a filing asking a judge to detain Jacob Chansley, the Arizona man and QAnon conspiracy theorist who was photographed wearing horns as he stood at the desk of the vice-president, Mike Pence, in the chamber of the US Senate.

The detention memo, written by justice department lawyers in Arizona, goes into greater detail about the FBI’s investigation into Chansley, revealing that he left a note for Pence warning that “it’s only a matter of time, justice is coming”.

“Strong evidence, including Chansley’s own words and actions at the Capitol, supports that the intent of the Capitol rioters was to capture and assassinate elected officials in the United States government,” prosecutors wrote.

    […]

In Chansley’s case, prosecutors said the charges “involve active participation in an insurrection attempting to violently overthrow the United States government”, and warned that “the insurrection is still in progress” as law enforcement prepares for more demonstrations in Washington and state capitals.

  2. This should be a very interesting next seven or so days in the D.C. area.  I expect we will have a few drones in the air to keep tabs on terrorists.  With two or three divisions, in size, of National Guard troops guarding downtown D.C. I think any attack by terrorists would be suicidal.  The troops are armed and will be carrying things that hurt when hit by them.

I tend to think there are not enough racist party members to vote to split from the Constitution.  Also, the cult leader is slowly melting leaving the followers to wander in the dark.  They need another leader, and so far there are none in front of the pack.

  3. D’ump dumping nixon comparison

    CNN:

He told one adviser during an expletive-laden conversation recently never to bring up the ex-president ever again. During the passing mention of resigning this week, Trump told people he couldn’t count on Vice President Mike Pence to pardon him like Gerald Ford did Nixon, anyway.

so don’t look for his ascending the stairs of whirly-bird One making victory signs with arms in air

  4. In the past, tRUMPsky always skated and anyone in his corner suffered the consequences.

  5. Funniest thing I’m hearing about Dumbass is that he’s trying to drum up a crowd for a big send off for him Wednesday morning. And who would be in the crowd and where would they be? The 12 people from his administration still in the WH?   The WH helipad?  Joint base Andrews?  Sounds like a party to me. 🙄

  6. “Look it up”???  You’re going to make me do my own Googling search for facts?  The next thing you know, you will expect me to provide citations and stuff.

One possible conclusion to draw from the 1850s for 2020, it led to a whole new political party called The Republicans.  The fence sitting Whigs got dumped.  The brand new party came up with what may have been the first celebrity couple in the form of candidate John C. Fremont and his glamorous politically savvy wife, Jessie Benton Fremont.  Look it up 🙂 or read a good book:  Imperfect Union

  7. At best, I normally I consider Joe Scarborough a bloviating noise machine.  This morning he had it right.

“You can’t love both the Constitution and Donald Trump.  It is one or the other.”

  8. Pogo – hard to say how many cult members would be allowed in the WH area, right now that area is very well protected against terrorists.

  9. BiD

The one with the fire extinguisher they caught isn’t the one who killed the policeman with one.  This policeman had a concussion and a mild heart attack, but he lived.  Still want to see the murdering scum who killed the other officer.

  10. For the history lovers amongst us, the Benton family has always been one of my favorites.  The connections of Thomas Hart Benton in particular:

Benton was related by marriage or blood to a number of 19th-century luminaries. Two of his nephews—ConfederateColoneland posthumousBrigadier GeneralSamuel Benton[14]of Mississippi, andUnionColonel andBrevetBrigadier General Thomas H. Benton, Jr. of Iowa[15]—fought on opposite sides during the Civil War. He was brother-in-law of Senator/GovernorJames McDowellof Virginia; father-in-law of explorer,UnionMajor General, and presidential candidateJohn C. Frémont; and cousin-in-law of SenatorsHenry Clay, the Benton family children of former KingJoseph Bonaparte[16]andJames Brown, all of whom married cousins of Benton. His great-nephew was CongressmanMaecenas Eason Benton, the father of painterThomas Hart Benton.

  11. Making the comparison with Nixon is somewhat of a reach.  Nixon was a brilliant thinker and almost a savant when it came to foreign policy.  Several Presidents after Nixon’s terms reached out to Nixon for advice on China and the USSR.
Nixon had a mommy problem and spent too much time in a really dark place.  Trump is a Narcissistic, corrupt, anti-social grifter who never should have been elected President – albeit showing the true ignorance of many of the Republican party.
Biden will do just fine – but the Democrats have to put a fork in this impeachment and finish it.  My only fear is what might happen between now and next Tuesday.

  12. Slowly the horrible feeling of doom and tension is slipping away.  The sensation of terror is ending.  Just a few more days and the relief will be real.

  13. To share with your Maga uncle on face book.
Interviews with the police who held back the rioters at danger to their lives.
    From the Washington Post

Blinded by smoke and choking on gas and bear spray, stripped of his radio and badge, D.C. police officer Michael Fanone and his battered colleagues fought to push back rioters trying to force their way into an entrance to the U.S. Capitol.

  14. Glad Trump doesn’t want to be compared to Nixon. He is right, Trump is his own separate brand of evil that all future politicians will unfairly (I hope) be compared to when they stray toward the dark side.
    Jack

  15. So many troops in the neighborhood I’m as worried about trigger-happy soldiers. Think I’ll skip checking mail and taking out garbage until this is over.

  16. Ya know, if we hadn’t passed out all that stimulus money last year a lot of those rioters would have had to stay home. The economy would have been a wreak and they would have been worried about making their car payment so that they would have a place to live.
    Jack

  17. Craig, bake some cookies and hand them out. Put on your best Mister Rodgers sweater. Nobody shoots old men with homemade cookies. They may laugh at them but they don’t shoot them.
    Jack

  18. Craig…  Jack has made a great suggestion.  You pass out homemade chocolate chip cookies… you’ll be good as gold…  and safe.

  19. Hey that is an idea, if Craig bakes cookies he will have everybody showing up on his doorstep. He can have a peace conference right there.

    Jack

  20. divitale, according to his niece D’ump had a daddy problem.  agree no comparison on IQ: remember he’s a stable genius.

  21. I don’t think cookies will keep you safe.  I think they would take the cookies and shoot you anyway

  22. It is cold and the snow is a blowin’. If we had more of it we could have had a blizzard, plenty of wind just not enough snow. I didn’t make it to the store yesterday and am out of bread. Looks like I get homemade bread for supper. Hope I’ve got lots of butter.
    Jack

  23. the officer who was stripped of his radio and badge also said they were after his ammo. looked like some were also taking their helmets so perhaps this was part of a plan to be able to listen in on defense forces, pass oneself off as a police person and get further into the secured passages.

  24. jack, if short on butter, make biscuits if you’ve got lard and  hoecake or flatbread if you’ve got cooking oil

  25. latest pew poll

Donald Trump is leaving the White House with the lowest job approval of his presidency (29%) and increasingly negative ratings for his post-election conduct. The share of voters who rate Trump’s conduct since the election as only fair or poor has risen from 68% in November to 76%, with virtually all of the increase coming in his “poor” ratings (62% now, 54% then).

Trump voters, in particular, have grown more critical of their candidate’s post-election conduct. The share of his supporters who describe his conduct as poor has doubled over the past two months, from 10% to 20%.

The new survey by Pew Research Center, conducted Jan. 8-12 among 5,360 U.S. adults, including 4,040 who say they voted in the presidential election, finds that a sizable majority of Americans do not want Trump to remain a major political figure after he leaves office. About two-thirds (68%) say Trump should not continue to be a major national political figure for many years to come; just 29% say he should remain a major figure in U.S. politics.

    [continues]

  26. KGC….   maybe Jack meant to pass cookies out to trump supporters.  But I meant for him to pass them out to the Capitol police/and or the National Guard.  I agree that trumpsters are not to be trusted.

  27. Pat
I’ve been doing morning biscuits with out the grease. They turn out pretty good. Actually, it is closer to one biscuit as I don’t need to eat a whole batch.
A 1/4 cup of self rising flour, 1/2 teas sugar or  a packet of the yellow stuff,  a heaping tablespoon of greek yogurt, enough milk to make a kneadable dough. Knead it a bit with a spatula it the same bowl You mix it in. At that point I spray a little spray grease in the bowl and on the spatula to keep them from sticking. Knead it a while divide it into 4 dough balls  I’ve got a little tart pan that is perfect for baking them.
I like making the small ones as each half, when piled with generous amounts of the homemade apple butter my niece gave me for Christmas, make a perfect bite to go in between bits of egg and sausage.
    Jack

  28. Renee, at first I thought just the troops patrolling the hood. But then I realized there was a good chance he would attract others with the smell fresh baked cookies.
It s a bit like your bird feeder. You put out the sunflower seeds for the cardinals but the noisy blue jays show up too.
    Jack

  29. Looked out my office window and saw a crazy man walking down the street, Then realized, oh, it is the mailman. He is new to this route, We haven’t had a regular mail person for sometime. He looks like he will fit into the neighborhood so maybe he will stay for a while.
    Jack

  30. When they find the end of the money trail to the rioters (plane tickets, AirBnB), it will be quite a story.  Those seditionist asshats sponsoring the attempted overthrow of the government will also be brought up on charges, and, their businesses will be in the crapper.

  31. I think the most surprising thing I’ve seen in the last couple of days was the Chamber of Commerce endorsing Biden’s stimulus package.
If nothing else, maybe the riots made people rethink who they wanted to support.
    Jack

  32. No support for state or local governments in the Dec package, do of course the CoC is on board.

  33. Just finished watching One Night in Miami.  Four excellent actors portraying Mohammed Ali (at the time still Cassius Clay), Malcolm X, James Brown, and Sam Cooke.  Well worth your time with wonderful, make you think about what is being said, dialogue though majority of it had to be speculation.  This article that lays out the Fact vs. Fiction.

Leslie Odom, Jr  (Burr in Hamilton) plays Cooke so we get to hear that great voice sporadically throughout the film.  I’m not a familiar with the other three actors, but they all turn in Oscar level performances.

    Kingsley Ben-Adir – Malcolm X

    Eli Goree – Cassius Clay

    Aldis Hodge – Jim Brown

  34. From my twitter feed, shades of Iraq

The Secret Service has established a what it is calling a “Green Zone” in the heart of Washington, D.C., with National Guard to check reasons for entry.

So Craig are you in the green zone?
    Jack

  35. Situation normal:
    From wapo

When Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced this week that the federal government would begin releasing coronavirus vaccine doses held in reserve for second shots, no such reserve existed, according to state and federal officials briefed on distribution plans. The Trump administration had already begun shipping out what was available beginning at the end of December, taking second doses directly off the manufacturing line.

Now, health officials across the country who had anticipated their extremely limited vaccine supply as much as doubling beginning next week are confronting the reality that their allocations will remain largely flat, dashing hopes of dramatically expanding access for millions of elderly people and those with high-risk medical conditions.

  36. At least Trump will be able to say Biden had fewer attendees his event.

Oh and the ego ridden rat is leaving town before Biden is sworn in so that he can say he departed as POTUS on Air Force One.

  37. Yes Jack we are in the green zone. Trail Mix HQ is just two-tenths mile from White House. Upside is we’re in the priority zone for utilities, never lose electricity.

  38. Many of those troops will be out there tonight in the rain.  The secure perimeter stays that way.  I can tell you it is an eerie sensation being inside the fencing, or wire if we want to keep the military experience.  Places you expect to see people there are none.  Traffic lights going through the sequences and no cars to be seen.

Having a Green Zone in D.C. is because of one idiot and imbecile, and only that one.  Nothing like being as good as Iraq and Afghanistan.

  39. After Bush 2, i mean really,  where else could they have gone but this douche.
But there is a silver lining after all…….his brother Fred’s story comes out in full and Fred’s daughter Mary gets her due.

  40. Dominion must have good lawyers because I believe this is the journalistic  equivalent of “Oh F*ck!”
From the American Thinker a right wing online publication, to read the whole thing

It was wrong for us to publish these false statements. We apologize to Dominion for all of the harm this caused them and their employees. We also apologize to our readers for abandoning 9 journalistic principles and misrepresenting Dominion’s track record and its limited role in tabulating votes for the November 2020 election. We regret this grave error.

  41. Craig
You are close enough to throw rocks at them.
Not that I would recommend you doing so. Especially on a public form or even a private email because as the conspirators for 1-6 are about to find out, there is little out there that is private anymore.
    Jack

  42. Every day I drive by the beautiful Oregon Capitol.  People here are apprehensive about the coming week.  Our downtown merchants have been through so much. Fortunately, we have s good State Police, Local Police, and National Guard!!!

  43. Prediction:
The next trumpist gop nominee for pres will be a real dickhead full-blown Evangelist.

  44. CC, patd, or to whom it may concern……….my phone is gone grizzley gadzooks again and there are no pictures on this el cheapo laptop…….so if you please, or if someone else would wish to please throw up (so to speak) a picture for tomorrow, t’would be sclerific, if not stupendulous.

  45. Something that has been bothering me since I saw the first sentence mentioning it, the “panic button” in the offices had been removed.  I have worked in places where the comfort of a call switch or push button to notify security was right at hand.  The reporters have apparently not found it as interesting as I have.  But, I am sure the elected and staff have it at the top of the list of “investigate this first”.

  46. Joe Biden is tapping former South Carolina Democratic Party chair Jaime Harrison to lead the Democratic National Committee

Now Stacey can run for GA gov 2022

  47. NRA can file for bankruptcy and move to Argentina but it won’t stop NY AG from grinding them to glass.

  48. From Yahoo news

On Dec. 8, someone made a simultaneous transfer of 28.15 bitcoins — worth more than $500,000 at the time — to 22 different virtual wallets, most of them belonging to prominent right-wing organizations and personalities.
Now cryptocurrency researchers believe they have identified who made the transfer, and suspect it was intended to bolster those far-right causes. U.S. law enforcement is investigating whether the donations were linked to the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol.

  49. I just watched The Comey Rule.  Recommended.  I read his book & watched those recent events. The orange bucket of lard is really a bad guy and a ob boss!  YUCK!

  50. How is trying to find the scum who took part in the violent attack at the Capitol a “misuse” of terms?   Bravo.   I hope they find every one of the dirtbags and give them the max.

  51. Wonder how vague the bitcoin trail will be?  Nothing is completely invisible and someone always gossips.
