jace, thanks. delightful, however, now i have gene kelly dancing in my head.
for those who asked about the hat, cnn reports:
In a photo posted on Baldwin’s Instagram account, Baldwin is wearing a red cap with the Trump campaign slogan “Make America Great Again. ” But it’s written in Cyrillic, the Russian alphabet.
[….]
Baldwin’s translation is imprecise, CNN Russian experts said.
The first word means “Make,” the second is “America,” in Russian, the third word is “Fantastic” or “Great” and the last word is “Again,” they said. But the phrase contains improper grammar.
Former CNN Moscow bureau chief and CNN Contributor Jill Dougherty said this is not at all how Russians would say it or write it and wouldn’t be surprised if Baldwin came up with the phrase by plugging it into Google Translate.
“In fact, we just Google translated it, and it’s translated exactly like on the cap,” Dougherty said.
whatever. still is a good joke and better than what the twit usually tweets.
carl hiaasen: Eight years later, ‘Yes, we can’ became ‘Yes, he did”
Ex-presidents are helpless to choose their places in history, a process that unfolds with time and perspective. Obama needn’t worry. He’ll be treated well.
When he entered the White House in January 2009, he basically was handed a steaming bag of crap — two endless and costly wars, skyrocketing national debt and an economy skidding toward a doomsday cliff.
He also faced hostile Republican leaders who, even before his first full day on the job, had met privately vowing to fight everything he proposed — including policy ideas that had originated with the GOP.
That’s the unwelcoming scenario that greeted the first African-American president eight years ago. Yet, in less than two weeks he’ll leave office with popularity ratings comparable to those of Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.
Most of our troops are home from Afghanistan and Iraq. Much of the al Qaida leadership — remember the maniacs who attacked us on 9/11? — has been decimated by drone strikes.
Oh, and Osama bin Laden is dead. (If a Republican president had ordered that raid, he would have been coronated.)
One other thing that happened during Obama’s presidency: The economy didn’t tank. In fact, a major recovery began.
More than 15 million new jobs have been added since 2010. Unemployment is way down, and so is the poverty rate. Incomes are rising even for the middle class. Gas prices are low and, for the first time in decades, America isn’t dependent on foreign oil.
[….]
At the end, when it mattered most, Obama couldn’t bring the country together. The politics of fear, hate and division cashed in.
As a result, the keys to the White House are being handed to a man who couldn’t be more different from his poised and deliberative predecessor.
What’s the Political version of “blue flu”?
Should those attending the Inauguration be tagged & shunned as enabling the President-elect’s Administration?
Peaceful transition is a proud tradition, especially occurring after a bitter campaign. But something ain’t right with this one – and everybody knows it. Perhaps a polite regrets will say more about character than we realize even now. Who has the balls to resist?

Garrison Keillor: That tide in the affairs of men
Idealists don’t do as well in politics as gamers do. Idealists are in a grim struggle to save mankind from itself and gamers are just trying to capture your bishop with two pawns. A crafty old fox can beat the goddess of light two out of three times. But one out of three may be good enough.

“There is a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune,” said Shakespeare, and there is likewise a tide which, leading others to fortune, lands you on the rocky beach like a piece of damp garbage.
Those volunteering to be in the inauguration spectacle should be pointed out for supporting the Russians. There are many of us not in the spectacle but will also be there.
Blue Bronc,
Why are you going? Part of the Red Cross? This event is, in a way, a disaster.
My point was more about Politicians. Funny how a Candidate who harps hourly about draining the swamp will have the entire menagerie on display as he solemnly swears to become part of the swamp. Would have loved to have seen an alternative celebration – say, a fundraiser for Veterans attended by Presidents Carter, Clinton, Bush 43 & their better halves – as an example of The Greatness of Americans. Invite John Kasich & Jeb! too. Heck, invite anyone with a heart & a conscience. Resistance with a message of values.
The revolution has come and went and it wasn’t the lefties that did it. As usual they just talked a lot.
Welcome to the new world order, In case you haven’t noticed the Democrats have been reduce to a minority party. Their message is a failure. If the left really wants to control anything they need to be better at reaching the whole country with their message. Engaging in the 2017 version of political correctness by shunning those who attend or participate in the inauguration is a dead end. If you are a real liberal you are supposed to believe in change, maybe it is time to change,
Ya think?
Jack
Jace, as the Gershwin was going through a syncopated passage I looked out the breakfast room window and spied a squirrel on his toes dancing, seemingly in cadence with Rojas, across the 20-deg F frozen landscape timber encircling Kumcho’s vegetable garden. Magnificent!
Red Cross Disaster Services does the inaugurations, 4th on the Mall and special events. We are part of the package that includes law enforcement, security, and other services. We are around the inauguration week, not just on the 20th.
BB,
Darn it, you be safe out there. Check-six often. Buddy with an armed presence.
Don’t know why I’m telling you all this stuff that you already live by. Just be safe.
Flatus
Flatus,
Your description is magnificent as well. Thanks for sharing.?
Flatus – understood. We work in teams of three; lead, radio operator and backpack carrier, which contains supplies. There are many reasons I should be there, even in my old and quite decrepit state, than younger with less experience. We do have partners around too. I look forward to the short parade, it will end before dark this time. Possibly short enough to be home before dark.
sjwny,
you must have missed this rachel maddow show linked earlier about the masses amassing:
and if it will make you feel any better heed this op ed from nytimes:
Here are some ways to make your opposition felt and bring forth some light on the impending Day of Darkness.
Protest.
Protests are being organized all over the country, including in the capital itself. Join in. One group, under the banner “Not My President,” is even planning a silent protest at the U.S. Capitol. Then of course there will be the Women’s March on Washington the day after the inauguration. With more than 100,000 people saying they will attend on Facebook, and organizers estimating that they could get 200,000, this could be the largest anti-Trump rally yet.
Volunteer.
If you can’t travel to Washington or if there are no protests being organized in your area, volunteer at an agency or nonprofit that serves a community or advocates on an issue that has been directly targeted by the incoming president. These range from women’s rights, to civil liberties, to immigrant outreach, to environmental protection.

Ignoring anti-Trumpers: Why we can expect media blackout of protests against Trump’s inauguration
Thousands protesting Bush’s inauguration in 2001 received about 10 minutes of coverage
I’m still looking for the actual video, but this is a write up of the Maddow segment that lambasted the National Enquirer’s Hillary coverage in the last few weeks before the election

Thank you as always. Gershwin is always welcome.
Planning on spending 1/20 reading as I don’t want to even accidentally catch Trumplethinskin’s abomination.
Boy Howdy it is raining here and a bit on the windy side. We could get 8″ by the time it is done.
We are high and dry, don’t have to go anywhere and have plenty of all the right kinds of provisions. We are in no danger of flood or mudslide. Our driveway and path to the house could be damaged but so far it looks good.
We are sorry the Raiders lost and hope this gives further incentive to get them to stay in Oakland.
It’s been mentioned here already but the Indivisible handbook is great and if people follow the suggestions there will not be a media blackout of anti-Trump events. Local coverage is the best coverage and depending on national media won’t get anyone anywhere.
In person, Trump communications director Jason Miller is Yuge. He is a fat boy for sure. I guess Trump likes to surround himself with people like himself – he’s Yuge too. And Miller is slimey Although the Condom is the worst – her job title should be ass’t liar in chief

The Old Man and His Tweets
Who needs that Shakespeare guy when ya got Trump?
For Trump, his online dominance is a source of pride. He boasts to friends, aides and journalists alike about the quality of his writing—pointed, pungent and memorable—and claims that people call him “the Ernest Hemingway of Twitter.”
I got this via Twitter this morning, and believe it originated in the WaPo. A Google search reveals previous references to the story. Apologies for scanty attribution.
What’s interesting is that Trump is aware of Hemingway, or at least Spencer Tracy. And that he enjoys being regarded, even if its self-regard, as a good writer. That’s intellectual elitism, ain’t it?
“Planning on spending 1/20 reading as I don’t want to even accidentally catch Trumplethinskin’s abomination.”
jamie, but you’ll miss the inevitable streaker rising from amidst the v.i.p.s and being surfed across the crowd, biden tripping john roberts on his way to read the oath, pence holding bunny ears up behind the twit during photo op time just before a lightning bolt strikes away the bible ivanka hands to said twit and a mighty voice echoing across the mall proclaims…..
you’ll just have to be there to find out what happens next.
good for Lindsey. giv ’em hell senator.
nbc:
Graham: Anyone Celebrating Russian Interference is a ‘Political Hack’
Sun, Jan 08
In a fired-up interview with Meet the Press, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) tells Chuck Todd that anyone who takes less than a hard-line stance against Russia is unpatriotic.
Lindsay hacked pretty good when he had the chance
A media blackout of protesters? Do you mean like the blackout of Haitians protesting Hillary outside of the DNC? ~Surely, the media wouldn’t do such a thing…again.~
Prez Carter is attending and I think he is probably a good example of going to show respect for the office and the transition of power. Then, we just have to have confidence that the responsibilities of the various branches of our gov’t will be enough to keep Donny in line or remove him from office.
sj – I about wore out my Rutles cassette.
wapo: It’s time to retire the tainted term ‘fake news’
….
So, here’s a modest proposal for the truth-based community.
Let’s get out the hook and pull that baby off stage. Yes: Simply stop using it.
Instead, call a lie a lie. Call a hoax a hoax. Call a conspiracy theory by its rightful name. After all, “fake news” is an imprecise expression to begin with.
“Fake news means different things to different people,” Usher told me. “Is it satire? Comedy news? Partisan conspiracy? Partisan journalism? Big mistakes reliable news institutions have made, or hoaxes they fell for?”
What’s more, the term is being used to discredit — or at least muddy the waters for — legitimate fact-checking efforts.
Glenn Kessler, who writes The Post’s Fact Checker, put it this way: “People seem to confuse reporting mistakes by established news organizations with obviously fraudulent news produced by Macedonian teenagers.” (BuzzFeed reported in early November that young Macedonians were setting up sites on Facebook devoted to click-baity, pro-Trump deception, and reaping advertising profits.)
Kessler noted that he’s often asked by readers to investigate “fake news” that is nothing more than a correctable error in legitimate journalism.
Just finished binging my way through all 7 seasons (156 episodes) of The West Wing. It was on the air from 1999 to 2006. The final episode is the swearing in of President Santos. Throughout this second time viewing, it was stunning that every single show had a problem that is still relevant today.
Just to be a little geeky that last episode kicked off with a big blatant mistake when the about to be First Lady asked who decided the event should be open air in frigid January and the PEOTUS names three founders instead of saying that Washington’s was held in April and all others until 1933 in March.
Anyway loved all the nobility of the fairy tale and desperately needed this year when the nation seems to have decided that boorish, ignorant, arrogance is the flavor of the day.
“Prez Carter is attending and I think he is probably a good example of going to show respect for the office and the transition of power.”
bid, so are george w and laura bush and bill and hillary Clinton.
No sentient being has any respect for Trump no matter what office he holds

Mrs. Betty Bowers, America’s Best Christian
2 hrs ·
Melania is threatening to sue anyone who says she used to be a hooker. I promise never to say that she *used* to be one.
Well, I’m glad that there will be a show of support for our county’s way of doing things, if not for the incoming prez.
I’m also glad that the incoming prez isn’t Ted Cruz.
Lindsey Graham was spot-on, today.
Not even funny, crackers. If a man said that about someone you didn’t despise, you’d call it mysogyny.
Betty Bowers America’s best Christian is always funny
Trump’s the winner so we are all playing by Trump rules now
I don’t know myself but people are saying Melanoma used to be a high end sex worker
just google it
Melania seems to be about the only likable thing about Donald. Pretty much blond arm candy for the aging billionaire. However she got there and what part of her soul she had to give away to get the Prenup is a high enough price to pay for the gig without being trashed in the tabloids.
The second, third, and whatever 20 to 40 years younger wives of wealthy men are pretty much just lemon tarts.
KC. Lol? Give it back. ??
blah blah blah
she stole a speech from Michele Obama and she plans to make cyber bullying her cause
and there are a million salacious pictures of her. How can you not make fun of her
Just let me weigh in on this one. I find some of the comments about Melania to be extremely distasteful and out of bounds.
What it does make clear, misogyny is not just a problem for right wingers.
Jack
I think some of you need to check the definition of misogyny
And the woman has posed nude with whips and chains
She lied on her immigration application and probably a lot of other things
why should she get a pass she is just as right wing as hubby
for sure not all the jerks are on the right
For the same reason we give all families a pass, I don’t give a fuck what she did in her past, her past is irrelevant Nothing she has done or not done has any bearing on who she is now, It is the past and we have all done things that we don’t want to be brought to the glaring light of the national press.
I’m going to leave it there
Jack, I totally agree with you. There is no way in the world that I will associate myself with the types of remarks that you describe and that we see too often.
be sure to check that definition
and she has said terrible things about Democrats
Ivana is a misogynist who knew
Ivana was told at a recent party in New York that she would have been a good First Lady.
According to the New York Daily News, she laughed and replied: ‘Yes, but the problem is, what is he going to do with his third wife?’
Referring to Melania Trump, Ivana continued: ‘She can’t talk, she can’t give a speech, she doesn’t go to events, she doesn’t want to be involved.’

Will someone please tell me the relevance of our future first lady? I couldn’t give a flying frogs fat arse about the first lady. The one we have now is a wonderful person, one of the best since Jackie Kennedy – and is responsible for those horrible wheat crust pizza’s that I have to gag down at school if I forget my lunch. And the all wheat cheeseburger buns – my god.
100% focus should be placed on the fourth stooge “Donald the Orange Haired” who will soon have the nuclear launch codes and will be releasing our national security policy via Tweets. Really – tweets! I told a republican friend of mine a couple of days ago, a ‘merica loving Trump voting friend; that if we end up in a great depression, 20% unemployment, or worse in a nuclear winter of some type, that I’m coming to his house with MY gun and taking his food and water – because he voted for the moron.
Enough – rant finished!
There’s a YUUUUUJE difference between a hooker and a stripper once in awhile.
Those ladies who used to cut the big veins out of cigar leaves were called strippers, just as one f’rinstance. I’m trying to think of another one.
melanoma is the one who said Bill Clinton’s past was fair game so hers is too
and for all the pious baloney – I say that’s what it is pious baloney
