Sunday Serendipity

I’m thinking about Martin Luther King Day.

We need to remember this is not ancient history. We as a nation have a long history of oppressing others. Often with terror and violence We did it in the past we are quite capable of doing so in the future

Strange Fruit – Wikipedia
Strange Fruit” is a song written and composed by Abel Meeropol (under his pseudonym Lewis Allan) and recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939. The lyrics were drawn from a poem by Meeropol published in 1937. The song protests the lynching of Black Americans with lyrics that compare the victims to the fruit of trees. Such lynchings had reached a peak in the Southern United States at the turn of the 20th century and the great majority of victims were black. The song was described as “a declaration of war” and “the beginning of the civil rights movement” by Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun.
[…]
Meeropol published the poem under the title “Bitter Fruit” in January 1937 in The New York Teacher, a union magazine of the New York teachers union. Though Meeropol had asked others (notably Earl Robinson) to set his poems to music, he set “Strange Fruit” to music himself. First performed by Meeropol’s wife and their friends in social contexts, his protest song gained a certain success in and around New York. Meeropol, Shaffer, and the Black vocalist Laura Duncan performed it at Madison Square Garden.

more from wiki with regard to billie holidayi: One version of events claims that Barney Josephson, the founder of Café Society in Greenwich Village, New York’s first integrated nightclub, heard the song and introduced it to Billie Holiday. Other reports say that Robert Gordon, who was directing Holiday’s show at Café Society, heard the song at Madison Square Garden and introduced it to her. Holiday first performed the song at Café Society in 1939. She said that singing it made her fearful of retaliation but, because its imagery reminded her of her father, she continued to sing the piece, making it a regular part of her live performances.  Because of the power of the song, Josephson drew up some rules: Holiday would close with it; the waiters would stop all service in advance; the room would be in darkness except for a spotlight on Holiday’s face; and there would be no encore. During the musical introduction to the song, Holiday stood with her eyes closed, as if she were evoking a prayer.Holiday approached her recording label, Columbia, about the song, but the company feared reaction by record retailers in the South, as well as negative reaction from affiliates of its co-owned radio network, CBS.  When Holiday’s producer John Hammond also refused to record it, she turned to her friend Milt Gabler, owner of the Commodore label. Holiday sang “Strange Fruit” for him a cappella, and moved him to tears. Columbia gave Holiday a one-session release from her contract so she could record it; Frankie Newton‘s eight-piece Café Society Band was used for the session in an arrangement by Newton. Because Gabler worried the song… Read more »

Jack, thanks for reminding us of “strange fruit” as I’m also thinking of what a strange day tomorrow will be and what strange fruit it portends to produce.

A ceasefire deal agreed between Israel and Hamas has gone into effect after a nearly three-hour delay.
The statement came after Hamas named the three Israeli female captives to be freed on Sunday as Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher and Emily Damari.
Netanyahu said earlier that Hamas had not lived up to its commitment to provide the names of the three captives it’s set to release in exchange for dozens of Palestinian prisoners.

The TikTok ban, which President Biden said he would not enforce, did not include use; it was just a ban in downloads and external maintenance.

The notice TikTok put up says they are “fortunate” to work with tRUMP on this in the future aka tomorrow, probably.

Orange Adolf started talking about a ban during his first term. He created chaos, and now he will “fix” it and get credit for it…but he’s involved, so now he’s likely in cahoots with the Chinese Communist Party. He like keeping folks in and what better way than to spy on them, and push propaganda via a shared platform. Here’s your new, world order.

TikTok shut down to help Shitler and should be known as ShitTok going forward. Do not trust that platform at all.

Biden is so concerned about oligarchy and authoritarianism he installed almost no bulwarks against them while rolling out the red carpet for the biggest threat to a just society, and i’m pretty sure it’s simply out of spite for Democrats that pressured him out when he should had the grace
to bow out with dignity.

He didn’t lead a bad administration, but he sure did a good job of evaporating his legacy

Don’t let the door hit you on the ass, President Biden

I admit to feeling bad for the kids.

The Albertville High School band will no longer perform at the presidential inauguration on Monday. According to Albertville City Schools Superintendent Bart Reeves, all the high school bands who were invited to the inauguration parade were told Friday evening that they would no longer be able to perform because the ceremony was moved indoors.

Anon – rather than call them AI generated images or graphics, I call them what they are, cartoons. I prefer the old fashioned, hand drawn on cells, cartoons. More fun when they are not supposed to be “perfect” images. Wiley Coyote should not look like a perfect coyote. Bugs Bunny should not look like a perfect rabbit. And, the Febreez cartoons should have funky looking characters too.

This is a fine defense of AG Garland, my former student and long-time friend — the best defense possible — but it’s unconvincing even to me and sadly leaves me persuaded that history will not judge this smart, decent, well-intentioned man kindly.

Sturg, immediate dentures act as a band-aid on the gums to quicken healing, reduce risk of infection. In particular they keep the blood clots on top in place which act like a scab to protect the tissue underneath. The old days of waiting weeks for the dentures led to higher infection rates. Also as tissue heals it conforms to the shape of the dentures for a better fit.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jan/19/trump-crypto-meme-coin

“Price of new Trump crypto meme coin soars ahead of inauguration
Asset triples in price from $20 per token to more than $70, with at least $24bn in trading as of Sunday morning.”

“Strong political and government endorsements of crypto, paradoxically, pose a threat to its decentralisation ethos and could ultimately undermine the appeal of crypto assets,” wrote Larisa Yarovaya, an associate professor of finance and director of the Centre for Digital Finance at Southampton Business School, for the Guardian earlier this month. “If, in 2025, the SEC turns a blind eye, consumers could be left entirely unprotected from financial losses – especially when another meme coin bubble bursts.”

“The “Hawk Tuah girl”’s meme coin dropped 95% shortly after its release last month, fallen from a $500m market capitalization to $25m, with investors submitting complaints with the SEC of insider trading.”

And now, if you want a favor from tRUMPsky, just use the US dollar, or your country’s real money, to buy tRUMPsky’s crypto-garbage…and it’s payday for him in actual money…and it could it destabilize the world.

The Crypto-Grifter in Chief.

Ivy, I spent a winter on Big Pine Key where a large herd (or herds) of Key Deer reside. Funky little animals. Bigger than large dogs (there are dog breeds larger) but remarkably smaller than the deer that snack on our shrubs and rhododendron in East Bumfuck.
