something a little different from trevor. might want to save it for listening when you have more time to really enjoy some good discussion that’s not just sound bites.
Former President Barack Obama unpacks his hopes for inspiring a new generation of change-makers through his book “A Promised Land” and the Obama Foundation, the ways America’s position on the world stage has evolved, why the fight for justice calls for a variety of voices, and how he feels watching the latest chapters of history unfold since leaving public life. #DailyShow #TrevorNoah #BarackObama

The most ludicrous and bougie event is underway and AOC is there.Hypocritical? Good use of the spotlight? Fodder for her future political opponents?
“And since she was at fashion’s glitziest night, surrounded by some of the most powerful and famous people in the world, what better medium to get her message out about taxing the rich than, well, to have it written in red on her dress? “
https://www.businessinsider.com/aoc-met-gala-appearance-send-message-tax-the-rich-2021-9
Tax The Rich. Hmmm, pretty everyone else at the Met Gala is rich. Did they know AOC meant them? Does she really just want to be one of them? Was she just enjoying the attention, the Vogue article, rubbing elbows with them or can she be moved off her path for a frock and a night on the town? Was this just a chance to make connections to raise funds for her next campaign? Who paid her way, and, was the dinner tax deductible?
BiD, your post last night about the afghani female students wearing black robes vs western dress made me think about the students at oxford and other places who must adhere to dress codes at school. funny how similar requirements feel so very different and onerous depending on the philosophical circumstances behind them.

Since it’s Fashion Week in NYC, culminating in the ridiculous Met Gala, here’s some fashion news that matters.
“On Saturday photos emerged of a group of female students wearing head-to-toe black robes and waving Taliban flags in the lecture hall of a government-run university in Kabul.”
“Afghan women around the world are protesting the Taliban’s new hijab requirement in schools by posting photos of themselves wearing colorful traditional dresses on social media.“
“Jalali quote-tweeted a picture of a woman in a full black dress and veil and said: “No woman has ever dressed like this in the history of Afghanistan. This is utterly foreign and alien to Afghan culture. I posted my pic in the traditional Afghan dress to inform, educate, and dispel the misinformation that is being propagated by Taliban.”
If the Taliban expects foreign aid, there needs to be equality for the women of Afghanistan.
PatD – What folks have to wear to do whatever it is, we’ll, it’s quite different from facing a beating or worse if you don’t wear it.
As for the Abbott and DeSantis, they must be racing to hell because they want to be Veep to Orange Adolf so very badly. Here’s hoping the new book sinks them a bit more.
back to vaccines, an excerpt from the hill:

BiD, i agree. not exactly the same as being rapped on the knuckles with a ruler by a nun for dress code violations at a parochial school.
Well here in the top case spike state the first county in the state has announced that it’s closing schools and going to all remote learning. Preston County made its school closure announcement yesterday. And so the stupidity’s effects start to show once again.
A follow on to the Preston County remote learning announcement from our local rag. From the Exponent Telegram
Superintendent Steve Wotring announced in a video on Monday:
Low vaccine rates, low use of masks and social distancing lead to case rates greater than 100/100,000. Gee, who could have seen this coming?
Staffing troubles continue everywhere, but I would prefer that the unvaccinated and the partially unvaccinated just stay home.

“But a large number of Texans apparently have decided to stick with one dose of the two-dose Moderna or Pfizer vaccines: 1.89 million have missed their second dose as of Sept. 6, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. More than 1 million of them are more than 90 days overdue for their second dose. That means that of those who received a first dose, 11% haven’t gotten their second shot within the recommended time frame.”

a glimmer of hope ?

CORRECTION to my 6:45 a.m. comment. According to the WaPo tracker, WV has the 6th highest case rate per 100,000 at 99 per 100K (5th if you don’t count Guam), a 17% 7 day rolling average increase. The local news guys said we had the highest increase in cases nationwide. Either they are using a different database or were just wrong – or WaPo is, or… but I am just a pawn in the game of life (or Covid-19 reporting).
In other news elsewhere, my daughter is at the Weaverville CA shelter with the Red Cross helping fire victims take refuge.

Jamie, good on your daughter. Does she work for the Red Cross or is it a volunteer gig?
Hah! Apple News has as one of its featured articles today “How to Navigate a Midlife Crisis.” Well, that came out way to late for me – like 30 years too late. Luckily I did OK and stayed off the rocks mostly – thanks in large part to Mrs. P.

Volunteering. She lives in Sacramento. She used to work for the Rancho Cordova police department now is on call for various volunteer/emergency events.

“Warren urged the Fed to revoke Wells Fargo’s status as a financial holding company and require the company to separate its traditional banking activities from nonbanking activities. In effect, that would break up one of the nation’s largest lenders. Warren pointed out the Bank Holding Company Act requires financial holding companies to be both “well capitalized” and “well managed.”
“The only way these consumers and their bank accounts can be kept safe is through another institution —one whose business model is not dependent on swindling customers for every last penny they can get,” Warren wrote.“
Good on her, Jamie. Even with the mask, I see the resemblance, I think.
Not to be a conspiracy theorist but I’m beginning to think our Scientist/leaders are not exactly being honest about the delta variant.
My worries started as I listened to NPR as I went to a family get together last month. It seems a family went to Disneyland and both the vaccinated parents caught covid as did one of their children. Then, at the gathering my ex bil stopped by to tell his children their Aunt(who had been vaccinated) was in the hospital and on a respirator, the culprit? Covid.
It turns out not only was she vaccinated but she had also caught covid once before. This tells me the variety she had is totally different animal than last years covid. BTW her previous experience was a very mild case of covid.
So we aren’t even close to out of the woods IMO and we had better get Fing serious not just here but world wide.
Just a data point of 1, but worrisome.
Jack
Edit: She is now out of the hospital, weak but recovering
jack, there are a lot of “depends on” about that: was her vaccination pfizer, moderna or J&J? were the 2 doses administered properly timewise and effectively take (depends on her base immune system), how long ago? has she other contributing immunological problems? and has she been careful to maskup or stay clear of dense crowds?
a lot of unknowns. still the vax (whichever one) is not 100% effective — see Effectiveness of COVID-19 Vaccines in Preventing SARS-CoV-2 Infection Among Frontline Workers Before and During B.1.617.2 (Delta) Variant Predominance — Eight U.S. Locations, December 2020–August 2021 | MMWR (cdc.gov)—
the 2 mNRA are reported to be 90% which means 10% of folks taking it are likely to get full-blown nasty covid with all the trimmings.
and none of them promise that the vaccinated won’t get covid, they just assure that one’s not likely to die from covid.

Adios you fat bastard.
Craig, I suspect you’ve got an apples to apples problem. if you do a correct apples to apples I suspect the numbers more like this. White population has dropped to 72% from 80%.
The nonhispanic white numbers fell from around 46% in 2000 to 36% 2019 est.. categories for race are white , Black, Asian, Native North/ South American and Pacific Islander.
Hispanic is ethnicity and as such be classified in any of the racial categories.

(CNN)A new analysis published Tuesday estimates that preventable costs for treating hospitalized, unvaccinated Covid-19 patients reached $5.7 billion over the last three months.
This most recent data takes into account the surge in hospitalizations seen in August, which study authors estimate accounted for $3.7 billion of preventable spending alone.
The data analysis from the Kaiser Family Foundation found, using data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as well as studies on health care costs, that each preventable Covid-19 hospitalization costs about $20,000.

Read that Larry Elder story, they’re road testing the 2022 elections the Big Lie 2.0.
I am reminded of Al Franken’s book –
“Lies, and the Lying Lairs Who Tell Them”.
The whole “Red Carpet” event thing was invented by a Mohawk salesman from Georgia in the 1920’s to sell more carpet. ( A total lie)
I am really tired of watching rich people , and hearing about their feelings, feuds, and troubles.
The time has come to stop feeding this beast. Given the amount of rotting carpet we are throwing out each year.
That being said has anyone here ever seen a story about just where we are burying all this moldy sheet rock, rotting carpets , and stinking freezers ?
I had an eye-opener awhile back. I went with the old guy to the dump with some junk and garbage and whatnot. First time I’d ever been there. Now, when I call it “the dump”, you know that sounds kind of quaint or something. It was huge. Like mountains. It was nasty. It smelled. It was awful. It was like Hades. It ain’t quaint and it’s on some serious acreage.

Much of it yews to the “Fair and Balanced” thing. A or B ?
Yes or No ?
Brings me back to that question …….

That is fair and balanced. All though fresh Bullshit weighs more that dry Bullshit.
