BiD, your post last night about the afghani female students wearing black robes vs western dress made me think about the students at oxford and other places who must adhere to dress codes at school. funny how similar requirements feel so very different and onerous depending on the philosophical circumstances behind them.

BiD, i agree.  not exactly the same as being rapped on the knuckles with a ruler by a nun for dress code violations at a parochial school.

Tucker Carlson Said He Lies on TV When He Gets ‘Really Cornered’ (insider.com)

Carlson made the comment on September 12 while speaking to conservative show host Dave Rubin on an episode of the “The Rubin Report.” In the episode, Rubin questioned how CNN anchors Chris Cuomo and Brian Stelter live with themselves “when they just lie again and again and we have the internet to expose the lies.”
In response, Carlson told Rubin what he does to get out of a tight spot.
“I mean, I lie if I’m really cornered or something,” Carlson said. “I lie. I really try not to. I try never to lie on TV. I just don’t — I don’t like lying. I certainly do it, you know, out of weakness or whatever.”

“There have been many times in the 25 years I’ve been on TV where I think, you know, are we using this very substantial power that we have to put pictures on the screen to hurt weak people? And I have done that inadvertently over the years, because I got carried away. But I really try not to,” Carlson said, saying he only hits “upward” at those richer, more powerful, and stronger than himself.
Carlson’s comments to Rubin come one year after Fox News won a court case by arguing that no “reasonable viewer” could take Carlson seriously.

A group of Senate Democrats unveiled new voting rights legislation on Tuesday in another attempt by the party to pass sweeping changes to federal elections in the face of a GOP filibuster. 
The new bill, called the Freedom to Vote Act, was released by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), along with several co-sponsors, including Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Tim Kaine (Va.), Jon Tester (Mont.) and Raphael Warnock (Ga.), according to a statement from Klobuchar’s office shared with The Hill. 
The legislation builds on a framework proposed earlier this year by Manchin as well as the sweeping For the People Act, which was blocked in June by Senate Republicans. 
The new bill, which still faces an uphill battle in the Senate to reach the 60 votes needed to overcome a GOP filibuster, would implement an array of changes to federal elections, including making Election Day a federal holiday, and implementing an automatic online voter registration system in each state. 
The legislation would also mandate that each state offer same-day voter registration at all polling locations by 2024, and calls for a broad range of cards and documents to qualify as proof of identification for in-person voting, according to the statement.
Following the 2020 elections in which more Americans voted than ever before, we have seen unprecedented attacks on our democracy in states across the country.” Klobuchar, chair of the Senate Rules Committee, said on Tuesday.
“These attacks demand an immediate federal response,” she added. 
She went on to note that the new bill has the backing of “the entire voting rights working group, including Senators Manchin and [Jeff] Merkley [(D-Ore.)],” adding that the legislation “will set basic national standards to make sure all Americans can cast their ballots in the way that works best for them, regardless of what zip code they live in.”
