“This is one of those moments where we have to decide who we are as a country,” he said. “Are we 300 million people who happen to live in the same place? Or are we fellow Americans who recognize we’re stronger when we care for and protect one another?”

“As the U.S. pushes to get people vaccinated, a curious benefit is emerging for those with this post-illness syndrome: Their symptoms are easing and, in some cases, fully resolving after they get vaccinated.“

“Texas health officials on Friday told vaccine providers across the state that they could resume using the one-dose COVID-19 Johnson & Johnson vaccine in all adult recipients…”

Great selection Pat.  I have my eye on Essential Quality but definitelly tempted by Bourbonic.  Still waiting on the post position draw.

I’ll take bets from any who want to find a horse to ride next month.

I’ll bet on the sweep for McDormand and Chloe Zhao. Haven’t seen any of the films this year but why should that stop me. Oh, and Hot Rod Charlie. (I like the name).

I didn’t see a new film in 2020, with the exception of Spike Lee’s film of “American Utopia,” but I do love this song from Will Ferrell’s parody of the Eurovision Song Contest. “Husavik-My Hometown”

Lincoln Center will have virtual screenings of the 2021 New York Film Festival. A few good things came out of lockdown, like making things accessible to folks who are not in New York.

Great selection patd!  The Derby next month…  try 6 days from now.

We watched a blast from the past last night…   Smokey and the Bandit.  So in honor of that…  and if Pogo doesn’t mind sharing…  I’ll take Hot Rod Charlie please.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/25/politics/joint-session-of-congress-biden-speech/index.html

Wednesday night! (There are several folks who should not be allowed anywhere near POTUS Joe.)

“Absent Republican cooperation, a handful of Democrats such as Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia will decide the fate of Biden’s agenda. They remain cagey on the particulars and Congressional process.“

“Polls show much of the Republican base, especially the white evangelical Christians who influence lawmakers most, fears the societal change Democrats reflect as mortal threats.”
In other words, the so-called Christians who are actually just bigots.

Of the nominated films I’ve seen Nomadland, Mank, and Ma Rainey.  I do think it is a McDormand/Davis tossup for Actress, but I’m rooting for McDormand because I like Nomadland more overall as a film and the really great acting in Ma Rainey is Chadwick Boseman who will probably take Best Actor.

All of the Nominees

Personal opinion One Night In Miami should have been nominated for BP (four Oscar worthy performances) but could well take Best Song for “Speak Now”.  I would love it if Leslie Odom Jr. won best Supporting but I don’t think that will happen.

“Plant-based products fall under the jurisdiction of the US Food and Drug Administration, an agency that doesn’t have standards of identity for meat and poultry products.”

That is not a “glitch.”  Plants ARE food.
Also, the farming of “meat” is driving climate change, including the farming of feed for livestock.

Keep the Derby entries coming.  Once the Post position draw takes place, I’ll let everyone know their gate number.

One of the kindest things to be done for both the environment and climate change:  Become Vegetarian.

I’ve cut way way back on meat but every once in a while a cow must die.  Since I know I could never personally kill anything with a face, this too may end.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/25/health/man-loses-150-pounds-wellness-trnd/index.html

“He said his doctor told him to make sure his plate looks like Canada’s food guide: 50% fruits and vegetables, 25% whole grains, and 25% protein, with that protein being as plant-based as possible.“

Maybe Canada’s food guide looks different than that of the US because they have socialized medicine and they know it will save them money in the long run.

I’ve been a vegetarian for 11 years this month. I don’t miss meat. I gave up cow’s milk long before that, but if there’s a slice of veggie pizza at work… I haven’t bought eggs in over a year (applesauce works as binder and sweetener in cookies).

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/04/22/texas-house-state-budget/

“Lawmakers go after Attorney General Ken Paxton – House members this afternoon adopted an amendment by state Rep. Jessica González, D-Dallas, that would cap what the Texas attorney general’s office can spend on outside legal counsel to $500 per hour…the amendment was filed in response to the state’s major — and costly — lawsuit against Google, which the attorney general’s office has hired outside lawyers to handle. The most senior attorneys could net as much as $3,780 per hour.”

Ha! It’s not Oscar material, but it’s enjoyable.  Well, I guess “Blame Canada” was nominated a dozen years ago.

Got it Sturgeone

For the lovers of classic films a suggestion.  Mank is about the writing of Citizen Kane with Gary Oldman as the very alcoholic Mankiewicz and Amada Seyfried as Marion Davies.  It really captures the feel in black and white and the competing Hearst/Kane stories.  The music of the era contributes to the mood as do the background stories of WW II

And, we need to stop providing hosts to which the virus can jump.  Masks on and stay home, even if vaccinated.   Folks still don’t get that.

Not all transwomen are smart and athletic.  Some of us are smart.  some of us are athletic.  And, some of us are smart and no longer athletic.  And a few were never smart and were athletic.  Why would a former athlete make a splash to say she is running for governor of a huge state?   Damned if I know.  But look at who else is running on the gqp side.  What is a good way to win a nomination?  Toss out a fish which will draw attention but has no chance of winning anything.  You then look good and win more votes. (I don’t actually think that is a good idea)

You got to go through Elizabeth City to get to the Outer Banks.  That’s all I remember.
Caitlin Jenner pfft. She may not have learned anything from Ahnold but the rest of us Californians did.  Not too mention her support for  Trump is disqualifying.

Correction, I think I also predicted Nomadland as best picture. If so, 2 of 3 so far with the third yet to be announced.

Jamie

Surprise with Best Actor.  Expected Chadwick Boseman so 2 out of 3 for me as well on the big categories.

Glad Mank got lots of love.  I really enjoyed that movie.  Nomadland was wonderful and deserved the awards, but Mank just hit my movie loving heart in all the historical places.

3 for 3. Not bad for not seeing that movie, or any of the others.
