OK Pete, Time For The Gay Thing

Buttigieg at Zero Percent among South Carolina black voters

Pete needs to fix this in a dramatic way, can’t win nomination without more support in this community nationwide. Perhaps it’s his poor record as mayor with police treatment of African-American constituents. Me thinks it might be in part due to homophobia among older black voters, maybe not. But it could be time to take on prejudice in ways they might relate to. Still, equating discrimination against gays with racism would backfire. Tricky but he can’t ignore it, just in case that is what’s going on. And for the general election it’s not just a problematic issue for black voters, so dealing with it now could be productive for him.

  1. something else to think about whether he becomes prez or sec of state where visits with country heads are part of routine duties

    https://www.newsweek.com/73-countries-where-its-illegal-be-gay-1385974

This week, the kingdom of Brunei enacted draconian laws that penalize same-sex relations and adultery with death by stoning. The news has sparked international outrage, and calls for a boycott of the Brunei-owned Dorchester Hotel chain, but it has also shined a spotlight on the reality that homosexuality and gender-nonconforming identities remains illegal in dozens of countries all over the world. While the number of places where it is a capital offense is small, in many places those convicted can face fines, jail time, lashings and even life imprisonment.

Even if the laws are not strictly enforced in a given country, they’re routinely used to threaten and discriminate against LGBTQ citizens. “There is no room to argue for legal justification of criminalization of same-sex relations,” said U.N. independent expert Victor Madrigal-Borloz. “Criminalization creates an incentive for persecution.”

According to ILGA, an international lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex advocacy group, there are 70 U.N. member States that still criminalize consensual same-sex sexual acts. The activist site 76 Crimes adds two non-U.N. member nations, Palestine and the Cook Islands, as well as Indonesia, “where a large province and some cities outlaw homosexual acts.”

While many countries that criminalize homosexuality have reputations as repressive regimes, others are popular tourist destinations with Americans unaware of the human-rights violations going on beyond their resort walls: . Trinidad and Tobago only repealed its ban in 2018, for example, and in Singapore, “gross indecency” between adult men is still occassionally prosecuted. (In Malaysia, where those convicted face corporal punishment and up to 20 years in prison, travel minister Mohamaddin Ketapi recently insisted “I don’t think we have anything like that in our country,” in reference to gay people.)

I follow several black people on Twitter for a whole variety of reasons.  Mayor Pete is a frequent subject and almost to a person they will admit that among the elders this is a sometimes problem but is not in a hateful way more common among evangelical right wing branch of religious.  Common remark to those making these charges, “Do they think we don’t have gay relatives, aren’t gay ourselves etc.” For those with disapproving attitudes it is “more in sorrow than in anger” as a fear for lost souls and for the most part it no longer exists as a reason for rejection.

OTOH, they really, really don’t like his record as mayor and think the conditions in South Bend need a great deal more fixing before he even thinks of taking on the whole of the country.  In general it is, “Okay you’re gay.  Okay you’re religious.  Okay you have a male partner.  Now shut up and take care of your city.” He is probably aggravating more people by linking the two reasons for disapproval.

  3. “it could be time to take on prejudice”

craig, also relevant for another group (51% of population) since it appears the media may once again be spurning more qualified females. why?

it’s true the old saying  every boy can be president: white/black/faithful/philanderer/divorced/straight/gay/smart/stupid/military/draft dodger etc

    just not girls.

  4. Your link is broken, Jamie, but i aligned most with Mayor Pete (6) and least with Warren (3), but the provided positions regarding policy proposals weren’t nuanced enough for my tastes.  Regardless, i’m still Team Warren.

Here’s your impeachment live-stream for the day, people:

  5. Debunked as a gateway drug.  Possible brain damage for still developing brains of young users.  Definitely should be an age bar (except medical).  Alcohol does way more damage to individuals and families.

  6. there is an age bar
no one thinks teenagers should be using pot
    Biden’s a stupid jerk
It should be regulated like alcohol

  7. Absolutely  and no smoking where there is no smoking
Biden is just pandering to the stupid part of the Democratic Party   looking for votes no one else even wants.

  8. The WAPO quiz would be much better if they had positions on all issues from all of the candidates.

  9. hey folks, be careful doing those online quizzes.  they are what Cambridge Analytica used to become so powerful manipulating the electorate.

  10. reuters:

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army will take measures to protect Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman and his family if needed, perhaps by moving them to a military base, after the key witness in the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump expressed concerns over his safety, a U.S. official told Reuters.

    […]

The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Army has been carrying out security assessments since Vindman expressed concerns about his family’s safety. Vindman and his family could be moved to a base if the security threat against him mounts, the official added.

The official said the Army would take similar precautions if any service member reached out with such concerns.

The possibility of upgraded protection for Vindman was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

My quote of the day, from Chuck Schumer.
    He has perfect pitch today,

I don’t have any idea what’s going on but if we learned anything at all from this administration it takes them several tries before they get their story straight and the truth comes out . So I think people are right to question the truthfulness of stories from the administration. In the meantime, I wish the president well from whatever he’s recovering from and whatever caused him to go to the hospital”

  12. Mayor Pete’s major problem is that he comes from a city so small it is closer to a town. He is so suburban  white that he blinds the eyes and yes Craig has a right to be suspicious that some of his problems with blacks and Latinos is that he is gay. But not all. His major problems in South Carolina (I suspect) is that he is just not there, like he is in Iowa.
    Jack

  13. The Trumpster either has a heart problem and a weight problem or he’s setting himself up for a medical departure from the White House at his appropriate time!  Will he be 6’6″ at the end of his next physical exam?  Mabbe he’ll wanna spend more time with his family. LOLOL…

  14. …not sure how these Volker and Morrison testimonies help Republicans, but thanks to them for calling two more corroborating witnesses.

  15. Kennedy had the Catholic speech
and recently Mittens had the Morman moment (which was horrible) and even
Obama had a come to Jesus moment over Rev Wright
So a gay pride speech might be in order.   They should couple it with a series of ads of all the gay officeholders these days.    He has spoken about his own acceptance of being gay –reluctant and the wider world as he publicly acknowledged being gay.   It is important to note that he is not a pioneer as a local officeholder and he needs to show how normal that experience is through out the US

  16. You know, I’m an aging straight white guy, and I do not understand anti-gay bias. It may be that I’m not black enough to understand it, but I don’t think it’s a race thing.  I do understand there are people older than me who are white who may harbor such a bias – and in fact could name a few – but I absolutely just cannot understand it. WRT Mayor Pete, great guy, smart as hell and green. Is that green thing disqualifying? Certainly more so than him being gay, at least for me. But in the end I’m a realist. Old folks ain’t gonna change in the next year and the last fucking thing in the world I want to wake up to Is the realization that I was on the front lines of Americans who want to say enough to anti-gay bias as I look to the prospect of saying President Trump in February 2020. One of the things I can say is that my feet really do not like being shot – especially by me.

  17. Rep. Swalwell did a good job of exposing Republican lies with his questions regarding the false narrative that Trump wanted a general anti-corruption commitment as a condition for a WH meeting with Zelensky.

    (paraphrasing)
    Rep.-”is Russia corrupt?”
    Witness- “yes”
Rep.- “Has Trump met with Putin?”
    Witness- “yes”
    Rep. “Is Turkey corrupt?”
    Witness- “yes”
Rep.- “Did Trump receive Erdogan at the WH?”
    Witness- “yes”

  18. Bink, frat boy cattle rancher?  Hard to wrap my mind around that. I’d say asshole covers the landscape.

  19. WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Army will take measures to protect Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman and his family if needed, perhaps by moving them to a military base, after the key witness in the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump expressed concerns over his safety, a U.S. official told Reuters.

  20. i found an article that said Nunes was in a frat, but doesn’t say which- he acts like a Sigma Chi, though.

i’m reading that now Republicans like Nunes are denying that Volker and Morrison are witnesses called by Republicans.  Do they not understand that everything about these hearings is being logged, recorded, and reported?  Holy Orwell!

  21. ”Oh God, remembering back to when Trump said that people get killed in this country, too!“ -tiptoe

It’s not a far leap to construe that Guiliani made earnest efforts to entice acts of violence against Ambassador Yavonovitch, with Trump participating using his Twitter-feed.

  22. i’m perfectly fine with the Trump Family living out the rest of their long lives, peacefully, in a dacha in Sochi.  Just get them the hell away from my government, please.

…confinement to Mar-a-Lago works, too. i hear it’s beautiful and decadent.

  23. Give ’em orange cotton suits, a basket of Norwegian lutefisk, a trench tool each, and let ’em develop the trump South Pole golf course.
