But such accidents are happening with striking regularity. A Guardian analysis of data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and by non-profit groups that track chemical accidents in the US shows that accidental releases – be they through train derailments, truck crashes, pipeline ruptures or industrial plant leaks and spills – are happening consistently across the country. By one estimate these incidents are occurring, on average, every two days. “These kinds of hidden disasters happen far too frequently,” Mathy Stanislaus, who served as assistant administrator of the EPA’s office of land and emergency management during the Obama administration, told the Guardian. Stanislaus led programs focused on the cleanup of contaminated hazardous waste sites, chemical plant safety, oil spill prevention and emergency response. In the first seven weeks of 2023 alone, there were more than 30 incidents recorded by the Coalition to Prevent Chemical Disasters, roughly one every day and a half. bId – when I was not retired I worked for a program that was pure regulatory and data collection, by statute. We were still developing the program and so had to post new changes to our regulations a couple times a year. The “order” came down that for every new or changed regulation we had to remove three. At least some person with vision realized the idiocy in that “order” and a lot of regulations that were no longer enforced or used by other programs were removed.

Our 8th grade class rode the train from Birmingham to Montgomery to watch Lurleen Wallace (wife of George Wallace) be sworn in as governor – first woman governor in Alabama. (She was a place holder for George when he was term limited out). BTW, I disliked both of them intensely. And after 3 months hiking along the Appalachian Trail I rode the Amtrak Southern Crescent from Harpers Ferry WV to Birmingham, and have utilized the trains in, into and out of NYC for the past dozen years. Also spent 3 months on a EurailPass between London and Athens way back when. I love trains. Don’t love shitty US rail maintenance and wrecks that fuck up people’s lives. Oh, and City of New Orleans – goddamn genius song. Thanks to Steve Goodman (RIP) for that song.
