beto at the front in the tweet wars with the  gunboat GOPers

from the hill:

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) on Friday slammed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for videos he posted from the southern border in which he claimed that smugglers were “yelling” at and taunting him.
[…]
O’Rourke, who unsuccessfully ran against Cruz for his seat in 2018, responded to the videos in a lengthy Twitter thread Friday, writing, “The only threat you face is unarmed children and families who are seeking asylum (as well as the occasional heckler).”
“If you’re looking for a crisis to cosplay Senator for, I’m happy to point you in the right direction,” O’Rourke added.
The Democrat then went on to outline a series of other issues facing Texans, including telling Cruz, “The state you ‘represent’ in the Senate is the least insured in the nation.”
“That means your constituents are dying of diabetes, curable cancers and the flu (as well as 50,000 from Covid in the last year alone) because they can’t afford a doctor or medicine,” O’Rourke added.
“The truth is, the number of individual asylum seekers and immigrants seeking to come to this country is the SAME or LOWER than it was in 2019 when Trump was President (and you were, apparently, Senator),” he wrote in a later tweet.
“This isn’t any more of a crisis today than it was then,” he added.
O’Rourke also responded to an earlier post from the Senate Republicans official Twitter account, which included photos of lawmakers at the border, adding that they were “heckled by cartels.”
In response, O’Rourke mockingly tweeted, “THANK GOD YOU SURVIVED THE HECKLING!”

Police arrest Georgia Democratic lawmaker outside governor’s office during protest of election bill (ajc.com)

[…]
Court documents show she was charged with “knowingly and intentionally” knocking on the governor’s door during a bill signing and stomping on Officer L.T. Langford’s foot three times “during the apprehension and as she was being escorted out of the property.”
“The accused continued kicking on LT Langford with her heels,” according to the arrest warrant.
[…]
The Georgia Constitution says legislators are “free from arrest during sessions of the General Assembly” except for charges of treason, felonies or breach of the peace.

In other boycott news, the Major League Baseball All Star Game is scheduled to be played in Atlanta this summer. That is another thing that can also be taken away from the state of Georgia.

ted, those reporters asking you to wear a mask were being unusually nice – most folks want a paper bag with eye holes.

corey, yes!  and as suggested yesterday the april masters tournment in augusta would be a good place to start packing up and bugging out.

Good point, Corey!    The GQP will argue that canceling events will hurt folks who depend on working those events, but it’s the folks making the big bucks who will be screaming.    Ad revenue from TV, too. Ouch.
Any arenas/ballparks around the country carrying Coke products should consider changing their beverage concession in solidarity.
Other companies might want to jump on this (marketing) opening and become very vocal in voter rights.

It’s strange to see all these tweets asking a company that is the worlds largest polluter and that once marketed itself exclusively to whites to do the right thing. I won’t hold my breath.

why pulling the masters would make quite a statement given its history.

an old salon article from 2013 noted this about the national:

Not until 1975 were African-Americans allowed to compete in the Masters.

[…]

Not until 1983 were players permitted to hire a caddie who wasn’t black.

[…]

  • Not until 1991 – nearly 60 years after the club opened – did Augusta National admit a single black member.

  • Not until last year did the club accept women members. Condoleezza Rice, one of the two women admitted, recently said that she has “long admired the important role Augusta National has played in the traditions and history of golf.” (Of course, we should expect that Rice would overlook the club’s history of blatant class, race and gender hierarchies: She ignored far more egregious things working for George W. Bush.)

That’s the exact argument Republicans will make.  They are hiding behind the very people whose votes they are trying to suppress.  Actually, boycotts will hurt the top in a way that will get their attention.  It’s the only avenue to counter the scourge on democracy that is the white supremacist, Republican Party.

Bink

So we’re advocating corporate supremacy over the electoral and legislative processes now while simultaneously claiming we support democracy?  What-in-the-actual-fuck??

After reading the news, today, you all are going to have to “boycott” so many states! Please make sure you diligently source everything you buy, checking political affiliation of the owners of every business along the supply chain, you know, so you get into heaven

Remember the remark made about Tiger Woods the year he won the Masters?

1997 — Fuzzy Zoeller

Fuzzy Zoeller‘s comments are probably the most infamous of all. As Woods was rolling to his monumental win at the 1997 Masters, Zoeller, in a post-final round interview, had some interesting remarks about the 21-year-old.

“He’s doing quite well, pretty impressive. That little boy is driving well and he’s putting well. He’s doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Got it. Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve.”

golfweek:

Request for Masters to boycott Augusta National after new Georgia law (usatoday.com)

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is calling on the PGA Tour and Masters Tournament to pull the upcoming event from Augusta National Golf Club in reaction to the recent passing of Georgia’s voter bill, SB 202.

The NBJC is also urging professional golfers to boycott playing in Georgia until the bill is repealed.

[…]

“The PGA Tour and Masters Tournament have both made commitments to help diversify golf and address racial inequities in this country — and we expect them to not only speak out against Georgia’s new racist voter suppression law — but to also take action.”

Ahead of the Masters Tournament last November, Augusta National — which has long had a reputation for exclusivity in its membership along gender and racial lines — announced it will establish scholarships in the name of first Black man to play in the Masters Tournament, Lee Elder, at Augusta’s Historically Black Paine College. It also invited him to be an honorary starter for the 2021 Masters along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

[…]

“Professional golf should not reward Georgia’s attacks on democracy and voting rights with the millions of dollars in revenue that the tournament generates and the prestige it brings to the State,” Johns said. “We all must act to protect our democracy and the right to vote.”

Neither Augusta National nor the PGA Tour has publicly commented on the NBJC’s request.

This not the only movement in sports concerning the new legislation. The Hill and other media outlets are reporting that the 91st Major League Baseball All-Star Game, scheduled for July, could be moved from Atlanta after the state’s Republican-controlled state House passed the controversial voting law on Thursday.

There’s a nice tidy little video out there of a very close-up of Birx’s face as the moron is delivering the shoot-up-with-bleach and the insert-the-light routine………it’s  very very painful to see what’s going on with her face.

“In Texas, 61% of white Republicans, and 59% of all Republicans regardless of race, either said they are reluctant to get the vaccine or would refuse it outright, according to the February University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll. That’s not an insignificant portion of the state’s population — over 52% of the state’s ballots in November were cast for former President Donald Trump.“

Yet, this Dem can’t find a vaccine anywhere near me.

BiD, are you near a Kroger?  their pharmacies are now doing the vaccine gig. i saw a list of them in dallas area with available shots.  have you called nearby walgreens, riteaid, cvs drug stores?  maybe call a neighborhood church or  charity group that’s doing the mobile units to shut-ins?

Yep, I’ve signed up for the “notify me” texts.    It’s just this area that is lacking which is, I assume, why my doctor can’t even get vaccine. I bothered him, again, on Friday.

Oh, I’m not a shut-in, I’m a shun-piker. I was not made to live in urban sprawl, but in a walkable/bikeable place like NYC.

Happy Passover to those here who may observe.

One could, perhaps, fly to Alaska to get a vaccine.  I just need to cool my jets and wait it out. I guess fewer Republicans ahead of me in line is a good thing.
