  1. not trying hard enough here unless the goal is to kill off as many people as possible

  2. The challenges at our southern border must include diplomacy.  We aren’t just a carrot, their situations in the countries they are fleeing are sticks.

  3. Covid is now the leading cause of death in TX, surpassing heart disease and cancer.  A pandemic complicates immigration.

  4. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/03/25/texas-ken-paxton-trump-insurrection/

“The Texas attorney general’s office is attempting to withhold all messages Ken Paxton sent or received while in Washington for the pro-Donald Trump rally that devolved into a riot at the U.S. Capitol.”

“Paxton is now facing some of the most intense public scrutiny of his career. The Republican attorney general is reportedly under federal investigation for allegedly abusing his office to help a campaign donor.”

“He also led a failed attempt to overturn the presidential election, joining with other GOP attorneys general in a lawsuit seeking to invalidate swing state victories by Democrat Joe Biden.“

  5. The problem with this task is that there is no way to make everyone happy.   It will have a huge impact in future elections, whether she or Joe are at the top of the ticket.  Joe helped Obama with ACA.  This is Kamala’s ACA moment.
I have faith in her, but it’s a thankless task because there are so many moving parts that folks see as all-or-nothing.

  6. At the heart of the problem is drugs.  As long as the US users  of the really hard ones are profitable, the criminals supplying them will continue to destroy their countries and their inhabitants to keep raking in the cash.

Is it worth trying decriminalization to remove the profit motive from the opiates or given our gun situation and lack of real medical care just asking for more trouble.

The majority of these immigrants are absolutely no threat other than too many human beings.  We can’t take in the world and of course we come back to the world having too many people, most of them poor with nowhere to go for relief.

The only thing different about those on our Southern border is that they are closer than the

    Largest groups of refugees

  7. jamie,

wonder if we could talk mexico & mesoamerica into becoming states and swap all those who travel north with the retirees and snow birds that flock to the south who are running out of downtrodden places to gentrify, rural pastures to pave over and deserts to turn into mowed lawns & golf courses.

  8. patd

A lot of them are already camping out gentrifying and over populating Baja California.  When I visited there regularly  in the late 70s, it was a small enclave at Rosarita Beach and then miles of land from there to Ensenada.  Now it looks like a suburb of San Diego all the way to Cabo.

  9. Craig…  agree…  the last administration handed Biden a mess.  And at least he’s trying to straighten things out.  It seems to me that the press is very anxious for this administration to fix all the problems….   as if all he had to do was wave his magic wand.

  10. renee, you’re right about media expectations that things no matter how messed up they were by former guy should have been fixed the very minute joe was inaugurated.  heck, that was only 64 days ago plus the fact the transition was sabotaged.

media also seem to be working overtime to gin up intra as well as inter party feuds.  they got spoiled by the other guy’s non-stop chaos and now they have to think for themselves or read up on boring complex details for their next story.

  11. Watching Uncle Joe in today’s press conference humbly, thoughtfully and genuinely sort through the many tough issues he faces I don’t know how anyone other than a stupid rabid dog isn’t comfortable he’s in the Oval Office.

  12. Speaking of ME-TV…..you can follow Svengoolie on Twitter at @svengoolie

    What a country.

  13. i was listening to Christian radio in the car, and the disingenuous assholes on there blamed violence in TV shows and movies for the mass-shooting, while maintaining nothing can be done to control gun access.

  14. CC…….it just occurred to me, strangely enough, that you were in DC at the time of The Greaseman when he was on 101 DC FM…..He was first on “The Big Ape” WAPE out of Jacksonville where we in Charleston could pick him up.   He created a sensation in radio there and soon left for DC, where he was lost to us.
Did you ever hear him any or ever react with him in any whichaway?

  15. Christians make me want to be serious and shit is one reason I hate they dumb asses.

  16. i don’t mind Christians, it’s the fake ones i resent

These two guys i heard on radio were more concerned about keeping their murder-tubes than protecting innocent life- like i said, “fake Christians”

  17. I’ll accept the distinction, but I simply cannot countenance a belief so fundamentally and absurdly silly as a resurrection.  Right there is where the ice cream turns to shit.

  18. I can go with they faked it and then hustled his ass off to Egypt, but for supposedly sane people to believe that someone died and then popped back up is just a bridge too far.    That no life lives forever, and dead men rise up never etc etc

  19. But yeah, the “good ones” I don’t hate them, I only hate their beliefs.
Nietzsche has a chapter in Zarathustra called “The Good and Just” which was a lot of fun if I remember right.

  20. lol
this is a piece of it

Behold the good and just! Whom do they hate most? The man who breaks their tables of values, the breaker, the lawbreaker:- yet he is the creator.

    Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra

  21. Even when I was a kid and they were shoveling that crap into my little brain, I could never make heads nor tails of “he died for our sins”.  I mean WTF does that even mean?  but I guess I understand that some folks just gotta have a load of crap to fervently believe.   Something to fight over, as it were.  I got no problem with gods though, they cool……

  22. Sturg, must admit I was never much of a radio listener, so I missed Greaseman.

Abt crazy ass so-called christians, Jesus would shove their tables over, my fave story about him, what made me a believer.

  23. …recent funeral i went to the priest described how Jesus would raise the dead on Judgement Day, so i asked someone, “did he just describe a literal zombie apocalypse?”

  24. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/03/25/warren-buffett-texas-power-plants/

“Warren Buffett group lobbying Texas lawmakers for deal to build $8 billion worth of power plants for emergency use.”

“In return, lawmakers would agree to create a revenue stream for Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway through an additional charge on Texans’ power bills.”

“Berkshire Hathaway Energy, part of Buffett’s multinational conglomerate company Berkshire Hathaway, has hired eight lobbyists in Austin at a cost of more than $300,000, according to records filed with the Texas Ethics Commission. One of those lobbyists is Allen Blakemore, a Houston political consultant who serves as a top strategist to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.”

  25. Oh he was a heavy cat, no doubt……it’s just all that magic getting in the way of the red words……

  26. Florida finally lowered the age to 50 and above. I got my first Moderna shot in Lake Mary today. Crazy Publix system. I live in New Smyrna Beach yet can’t go to my local Publix. Oh well, so glad to be on my way to being fully vaccinated soon :0).

  27. Today is National Medal of Honor Day.  I have met and known a couple of Medal of Honor recipients while they were living .  They were good men, both have died years ago.  One received his during WWII the other Vietnam.  One was wild and lived bar to bar (all paid for so we drank very well).  The other was very quiet and stayed to himself.  Just like everybody else in the world, except they did impossible acts in combat.

  28. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/03/25/conventions-texas-mask-mandate/

“At least four conferences were canceled in Austin because of the lack of a statewide mask mandate. The cancellations have caused the Hilton Austin hotel to lose out on $350,000 of revenue, according to Austin Convention Enterprises.“

Greg Abbott can do no right.

“Even after Texas ended its mask mandate, Austin and Travis County have continued to require masks. In response, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a suit demanding that local officials end the mandate. A final hearing to decide the case will be Friday.“

AG Paxton can do no good.

  29. only disappointment with the presser was that major didn’t stroll in and terrify the gaggle.

the big dog is back so watch out when you attack potus joe

    (CNN) —

Both of the President and first lady’s dogs, Major and Champ, have returned to the White House after spending some time in Delaware following a biting incident involving Major, according to Jill Biden’s press secretary Michael LaRosa.

The two German shepherds returned to Washington after Major worked with a trainer at the Bidens’ home in Delaware following the incident at the White House.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday that the dogs joined the first family at Camp David last weekend and then returned with them to the White House on Sunday.

“The dogs will come and go and it will not be uncommon for them to head back to Delaware on occasion as the President and first lady often do as well,” Psaki said at a White House briefing.

  31. I’m still alive and kicking.  Gardening season starts here mid March unlike Memorial Day in the north.  I’ve been gardening myself into a come to get it all done before the storms hit, and tomorrow I get my second covid shot.  I figure I’ll be good for nothing for a few days which is better than being on a ventilator by a long shot.

I’m also disturbed lately.  I know Matt Taibbi and David Cay Johnston. But why have I never heard of Chris Hedges?  A whole new world of layers of politics have suddenly come to my attention.  And I thought I’ve been in the political weeds since 1968.  So I’m disturbed.  I’m going to read his book America:  The Farewell Tour.

  32. I really hate this working shit. Don’t have time to screw around on the blog. Hell, didn’t even get the chance to read WaPo until now. No rest for the wicked….
