No matter whether in a good or a bad season, in peace or in war, music helps to mourn and helps to celebrate. As a Christian nation since the ancient times, Ukrainians have always particularly honored Christmas and certainly are famous for a large collection of Christmas carols. The prominent example is “Shchedryk”, the song which after getting an English arrangement became the universally loved “Carol of the Bells”. Until recently, not so many knew the background story of “Carol of the Bells”, which came into being as a result of an outstanding cultural diplomacy effort of a Ukrainian choir in 1920s. This year marked 100 years since “Shchedryk” was first performed in the U.S. The recent concert “Notes from Ukraine”, organized by the Ukrainian Institute, repeated the century old scene of Ukrainians being met with an outburst of applause after singinging their carol in the Carnegie Hall.
We had delicious ribeye steaks I reverse seared after 20 minutes in oven. The grilling alternative in cold weather. Tonight it’s half a turkey breast from Thanksgiving that I just thawed.
craig, a turkey twofer sounds good and with less toil over a hot stove for a holiday meal.
unfortunately this year the local kroger didn’t have goose so I’m breaking tradition and having roasted Rudolph* for christmas dinner. haven’t decided yet on whether poached plums or little red potatoes will suffice for the nose. this is in keeping with my spring holiday meal of having the easter bunny over (well fried).
*a generous gift from one of my hunting neighbors who said it’s off a 10 pointer.
PatD, i’ve never had roasted plum, sounds good, must look into that. And can’t remember last time i’ve had venison, hardly remember what it tastes like.
Speaking of eating meat, looks like I’ll be taking a break for a little while. My dentist told me on Monday it’s time to get dentures, which I don’t mind. Really rather tired of fighting the tooth decay battle.
This always brings back good memories. I always left a bottle of coke out christmas eve. My Mom would drink it so that next morning we could pretend Santa Claus drank it (even after i knew better).
If you notice your neighbor’s lights are still on after Christmas, it’s not because they’re lazy. They are celebrating a 119-year-old Colorado and Western event.
If you can swing the finances, I recommend implants on at least the lower teeth. Dentures are a major pain, but the lowers you might as well give up chewing.
My dad’s boss in the hearing ad business was “Pappy” Pierce. Pappy took a yearly vacation in winter to Florida, and on the way home brought Rebecca Ruth bourbon candy for his sales crew. I was a tiny boy, and I got into that candy, the best in the world. Did it really have proof-alcohol in it? I do not know. But that candy is the best ever.
And Santa with a Coca-Cola? Oh yeah. We left Santa Coke and a plate of chocolate chip cookies.
My best childhood Christmas, 1955…I got a new bicycle. OMG was I thrilled!
lest we forget it’s been 2+ years and the bells are still ringing

Ah the smells of Christmas – never mind I am finally getting over a flu-like thing that killed my smell and taste senses.
Happy Holidays to all.

My mom left them up until Valentine’s Day but it was probably for the other reason.
Soon on our way to the family celebration. Bringing the ham and the Hanukkah candles.
Merry Everything.
Don’t forget the liquid
Eight cocktails for Hanukah
Another holiday treat from my youth. Ordered some Rebecca Ruth Bourbon Balls from Frankfurt, Kentucky

Here is a free link to a Herblock Christmas cartoon. Enjoy.
Thanks Jamie, i’m getting temporaries at first, then evaluate options like that after a few months
Poobah, what Jamie said. I’ve had fillings, caps, crowns and an implant. Had friends with dentures. Implants are the bomb.
