UPDATE 9am: It’s Harris-Walz ’24

Let’s Go!!!

“With the support of 99% of all participating delegates in the virtual roll call, Vice President Harris has historic momentum at her back as we embark on the final steps in officially certifying her as our Party’s nominee. Whoever is selected, Harris and her team have spent two weeks pouring over the records of, i’ll say it one last time, a “deep bench of very qualified candidates”- governors with terms of executive experience and lifetimes of service, a Senator with an impeccable military career, and all with a capability to fulfill the duties of the office, if needed, on day one.

Republicans picked JD Vance

Craig – great question.  USDA has several methods of pricing for the food “market basket”.  I was going to provide a link, but there are several paths so a couple of links would not do the job.  Consumer Price Index is where the whole of goods is covered, the is the Bureau of Labor Statistics, BLS.

Prices are higher in this small, Midwestern town than they were in my old, North Texas suburb.  I buy the same things week after week, and prices are creeping up even higher.  Of course, there’s just a WalMart and one franchise grocery store here.  They are a mile apart.  Even cherry picking between the two, I’m spending twice as much.

I’ve heard folks in the store discussing prices. Yesterday, a woman asked if I could understand why the price of apple cider vinegar was so high.  IDK, but Bragg’s was sold to a big company right before the pandemic.  Wickle’s Pickle’s was sold to an investment firm last year and the product, per the label, is now made in India.

However, the prices are not due to inflation, but greedflation.   Also, with shrinkflation, you have to replace more often.    It’s corporate price gouging.

My dad’s little town is a food desert. They can get a little food at the gas station or some dollar store (Tree/Family/General ?), so folks have to get on the highway and drive to my town for groceries.

CNN exploded at 8:49 Eastern time with the news.  We Shapiro backers realize it is not his time, but he will be President in 2032 or later.  So that’s on the high shelf now with the stale candy.
Can we win with Trump now ensured of the Pennsylvania delegates votes?  I am a Walz enthusiast now, and always have hoped it would be him if not Josh.
As a Progressive Liberal, I am for him 100%.  His job from now until 11-5-24 is to put wind in Harris’s sails, and not screw up the works by doing, saying something stupid.  He won’t.  He won’t gain any electoral votes, but he won’t lose any. That is his job for the next 3 months.  Pour on the coals and steamroll Trump and get him into prison.

I have been shopping almost exclusivly at military commissairies for several years, very rarely stepping into a commercial grocery store. I shop for quantity at Sam’s Club or CostCo, no BJ’s near me.  I am shocked by the price difference now.  2020 the difference was measured in a few cents here and there.  It is now in dollars, sometimes several dollars. Example is Tillamook ice cream $3.49/gallon vs $5.49.  Eggs are $1.82/18. Bread flour usually one dollar cheaper. A few things are still within pennies but a huge difference on so much.

The commissary pays wholesale and charges a small percentage above.  We are seeing price reduction tags all through the stores too.

Choosing Tim to be my running mate was not a decision I made lightly — it was important to me to select a candidate with governing experience and with a proven track record of getting things done on behalf of their constituents. I know he will bring as much joy to our campaign as he will fight and grit.
Doug, Tim, Tim’s wife, Gwen, and I are going to hit the road this week to campaign across the country. Our goal is simple: to meet with voters, introduce them to our new ticket, and remind everyone of what’s at stake in this election.

It’s Now Harris / Walz

It’s now Harris / walz
Very clear, we all heard her voice.
There isn’t a band
but you can understand that it’s clear.
That It’s now Harris / Walz
Oh, my Lord, there it goes again!
Every one is dancing in the street?
They can hear the beat?
Magical, mystical, miracle,
Can it be?
Is it true?
Things are impossibly lyrical.
Is it me?
No, it’s you!
It’s now Harris / Walz
With one sound we all hear it’s Walz
It’s what I’ve been waiting for to hear Harris / Walz

It’s now Harris / Walz?
Oh, my dear, did you hear that it’s Walz?
Such love Blue Danubey music,
Yes we all heard it’s walz!
Even strangers are dancing now:
An old lady is waltzing in her flat,
Waltzing with her cat.
Roses are dancing with peonies.
Yes, it’s true!
Don’t you see?
Ev’rything’s suddenly Vienese,
Can’t be you!
Must be me!
It’s now Harris / Walz?

There’s now campaigning to do

Everyone must vote Blue.

Cause it’s now Harris / Walz?

I used to do the majority of the grocery shopping because Safeway and Fred Meyr are so close, but now we have switched to Costco for bulk and the JBLM commissary for meat and smaller amount items.

In the past week Safeway has started to come down some and if I pay attention to member prices it helps but still much higher than last year or shrinkflation if the same price.

How do you define Walz? He is your history teacher telling corny jokes. Like many history teachers, his first name is Coach. So, he is Coach Walz. Got a championship trophy too. Like any successful teacher, he likes people. Coming from a small city he has dealt with parents from all levels of society. Probably personally knows and likes more maga voters than you do.  As Governor “He gets things done”.
To be continued:

I’m sure Tim will realize that it’s Kamala’s agenda for America, not his agenda for Minnesota.  Take a lesson from the foibles of Caribou Barbie – if John McCain was alive today he’d tell you that she fucked up a perfectly good middle-right Republican campaign by going rogue and pushing an agenda that was rife with RW wackiness.  She’s an object lesson on how not to run for VP.

Palin save McCains ass. He was headed for an even more embarrassing loss than what happened. Remember the Stock market was dropping like crazy, financial institutions were failing all over the place. It looked like all of our savings were gone. The Republican brand was shit. She rallied the, what we now call,  “maga base” and kept them on board. This kept Obama from having a landslide election of historic proportions. As a result McCain won 21 states and wasn’t totally embarrassed.

I’m not sure how to explain this but Walz  believes in the personal dignity of each individual and he recognizes how our current welfare system destroys it, starting at a very young age. One of the features of the of his school lunch program was it was free to everybody. One of the positives he listed was , no longer did the free lunch student have to be embarrassed as he went through the lunch line. He gets it.
If you don’t believe poverty and the way we deal with poor folks affects people for their whole life, just look at JD Vance, he has been running away from it his whole life. There is a reason he sucks up to Trump.

Jack,
Their leads went back and forth during the summer and fall, and for much of the time was within the MOE. Before the conventions McCain had a 5 point lead over Obama (as of 8/20), reversing Obama’s lead of 7 in July, based on John’s perception as a better manager of the economy than Obama. (BTW, gasoline was near $4/gal. back then, so the pain at the pump we’re seeing now isn’t too high considering that was 16 years ago, but I digress.)  Following the conventions, they were close until the end of September, swapping leads depending on which polls you looked at.  From August 20 to November 3, McCain’s lead went from +5 (Reuters) to -11 (Gallup).  Caribou got some buzz just following the RNC convention, but my recollection was that she was a drain on his Straight Talk Express after that, largely because she couldn’t. And Tina Fey has my undying gratitude for lampooning Palin and turning her into a cartoon character.

Jack, Craig:  we called my high school history teacher Coach.  He is now 97 and still plays golf.  Only the girls called him Mister.  He was and is Coach.  I am on board with Coach Walz as the sting and disappointment of my horse being carted off to the glue factory subsides.  I was the center fielder and cleanup hitter for Coach Bourquin, and a forward on the basketball team for the same coach.  Coaches can only lose games; the players win games. We are the players now.  My state of residence is Ohio and my vote is only a tally in the loser’s column but many of you are located where your vote REALLY matters. I will vote as always here anyway to show my disdain for Trump and Project 2025.

fundraising email from the coach this afternoon:

Vice President Harris just asked me to be her running mate.
I had three words for her: I’m all in!
As a former social studies teacher and football coach, I’ll say it feels like the first day of school. America is smiling. There’s optimism in the air. Kamala Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible, and she’ll lead with that same joy and optimism as our next president.
But the only way we win this thing is if we stick together, so please allow me to ask…
I’ve served as Governor of Minnesota for long enough to understand what politics is all about: making things a little easier for folks.
We protected access to abortion, capped the cost of insulin, cut taxes for working families, established universal background checks for gun purchases. It’s common-sense stuff.
But these other guys are just plain weird.
Donald Trump and JD Vance are selling a twisted version of freedom where far-right extremists can invade your doctor’s office. Take it from a small-town guy: they know nothing about what working families need.
Kamala and I believe in a different kind of freedom. The freedom to keep communities safe from gun violence. The freedom to give every child a chance at getting ahead. The freedom to trust women to decide when and how they start a family.
Now, I’m ready to get out there and fight for our future — are you with me?
Trump’s billionaire buddies on Wall Street are predicting we’ll come up short. That’s one bad bet.
Time to prove them wrong,
Tim

Let’s get this out of the way and get back to talking about Republican wrong-doings.

Walz’s Decades-Old Drunken Driving Arrest Draws New Attention
Tim Walz ultimately pleaded to a reduced charge of reckless driving after the 1995 incident, which his critics resurface to question his fitness to serve.
Mr. Walz has said he no longer drinks alcohol, and instead prefers Diet Mountain Dew — the same drink that, curiously enough, is favored by the Republican candidate for vice president, JD Vance.

Dex, borrowing yours – “My state of residence is [West Virginia] and my vote is only a tally in the loser’s column but many of you are located where your vote REALLY matters. I will vote as always here anyway to show my disdain for Trump and Project 2025.”

Coach Walz.  I like that.  We had the same thing regarding how to address coaches, with Coach Plott (basketball and football) being a part-time history teacher and Coach Crumpton (football and track) teaching something part time – I didn’t have him and can’t remember what – but everyone, boys and girls, addressed them as Coach. Coach Crumpton had the first VW Beetle of anyone I knew – a black 58 or 59, split rear window model. Neat little car he drove 4 of us to a track meet across town in once, and even us skinny runners (then) were cramped in it.

Sturg, keep your feet dry if you can.  I saw pictures from Charleston – lotta water in the place. We were there a few years ago during a spring tide and there was minor flooding then at high tide even without rain.  Throw a foot of the stuff on it and I bet it’s pretty impressive.

Hmmm, a 29 year old plea deal from DUI to reckless driving versus 34 felony convictions 2 months ago. Somehow seems an unbalanced comparison.

Have any of you watched Alpha House .. available now I think on Amazon Prime.  Here is the description of it:
When their house mate is hauled off to prison, three Republican senators sharing a row house in Washington, D.C., find themselves in need of a new boarder. Enter Florida freshman Andy Guzman, who joins the guys as they battle primary challenges, party filibusters and the possibility of a junket to Afghanistan. Gil John Biggs suddenly finds himself facing a real opponent in a primary, which means he may actually have to do something — like go to Kabul, where a group of soldiers from his North Carolina district has just been deployed. Louis Laffer is facing a challenge of his own, but his opponent is questioning Louis’ manhood while playing up his own rugged outdoorsman persona in Nevada. Robert Bettancourt, the gentleman from Pennsylvania, suddenly finds he’s about to be indicted. Meanwhile Andy brings a gorgeous “contributor” to check out his new bedroom. This Amazon original is the brainchild of Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau, who also executive produces.
The character Gil John is played by John Goodman and he was the North Carolina basketball coach, and very popular having had winning seasons, but is being challenged by the newer NC basketball coach who has had an even better winning record and is so beloved by the state.
I bring this up b/c I think if Trump has any advisors who have any sense at all, they will try to convince him to dump JD and do whatever it takes to get Nick Saban on the ticket with him!

Of course we vote down ballot! We vote in special elections like we had here last summer.  I was furious at my party years ago when they kept Kerry out of Ohio the last critical month of the campaign and Ken Blackwell was allowed to shut down the polling places in Cleveland and Columbus and Cincinnati early with thousands of Kerry supporters waiting to vote. That was the end of Ohio being a swing state.  So yes, when your state is ignored by the candidates because every indication a state is un winnable, and an individual’s vote is moot, there is much to show up for down ballot.  Just the facts, ma’am. If you really believe Ohio will possibly go for Harris, write to the party heads and tell them to go to Ohio and blitz the populace with rallies. See, that ain’t gonna happen because we need to win Michigan and Wisconsin. We have Minnesota. We need Georgia and North Carolina. Down with the weirdos! Spread the word. Send in the pledges and cash and checks. Call your acquaintances and explain why we’re on board with Harris—Walz. “ We’ll sleep when we’re dead”. Tim Walz said that.

Bobby Brainrot thinks there’s a chance in hell that Harris would call on him to serve in her administration? Talk about weird.

I wonder which Coach Tim likes better: Minnesota hot dish or Nebraska church-Runzas (which are not like real Runzas, but recipes in church cookbooks which contain ground beef, sauerkraut or cabbage and Lipton onion soup mix and a few other add-ins on a bun).

Had a roommate from MN when I moved to TX.  She said she’d made hot dish for all of us for supper.  A hot dish of what?  This girl even called tuna noodle casserole “hot dish,” which is technically true, but apparently most only call that when tots are involved.

Cute clip of Coach Tim at the fair with his daughter. When he asks if she wants a corn dog, she reminds him she’s now vegetarian. OK, turkey then. LoL
