Vetting a Veep

something to think about just in case we need a Plan B due to unfortunate circumstances if Joe has to withdraw from the race but stays as President and hands the campaign position, money and staff over to Kamala: Who should she choose as a running mate? Here’s a checklist to use to vet a prospective VP candidate:

Someone who has the necessary nationwide recognition,
is an attack dog,
knowledgeable in foreign affairs,
good credible speaker,
relative youthful and pleasant appearance
knows the White House inside out and how to work the Congress,
but most of all whose selection will stun, entice and intrigue the media, bring back bipartisanship compromise and bridge the national divide gap.

How ’bout Liz Cheney for starters? Ticks off the list as well as ticking off the magaT king and cult.
If not her, who would be your choice to meet those requirements?

If we get to it, my pick is NC Gov. Roy Cooper. A Progressive Southern white man to counter Vance’s bubba extremism. He has won five statewide elections, even beat an incumbent Republican to become governor. At 67 he wouldn’t threaten ambitious party rivals down the road. And Harris-Cooper sounds like a Hollywood Western film actor.

Democrats with national name idea who could be on the prospective VP list:  Buttigieg, Whitmer, Klobuchar or Newsom would give us a gay man, two women, and someone who hails from the blue, commie state of California.

Any other ideas?

Pat, I was watching the rally live on TV, and when he patted side of his head, then looked at his hand before ducking I knew it wasn’t a direct hit, immediately suspected a shard or whatever. Still think that’s possible.

I’m still with Biden/Harris, but for the sake of hypotheticals (or 2028), I would go with Harris/Buttegieg.

That way, Dems would also have a military veteran on the ticket, and with all of the warring going on around the world, someone with first-hand, military experience isn’t a bad thing.

ps – Dems should spend more time focusing on the evil, MAGAt agenda and Putin’s puppets who would carry it out, no matter who is on our ticket.

Craig – One day, I hope Jon Ossoff will run, but he doesn’t have the name recognition yet.

Folks are used to seeing Sec. Pete on TV talking about airline regulations, etc., even if they aren’t Dems.

I don’t think we’re ready for a ticket with two women on it, but I’d put Duckworth on it before those you named; military experience to go up against theirs.

Newsome is too thirsty.  Even when he’s supporting Biden, it comes off as very Eddie Haskell; he’s really just saying those things to get the receipts for later.  My relatives in California think it’s a mess there and they especially dislike and blame him for all of it.

Biden Losing Ground in Battlegrounds
New Emerson College battleground poll  (in top ten 538 rankings for accuracy and transparency)
Trump either maintains or extends his advantage in the national poll and 6 of 7 swing states.
Arizona: Trump 46%, Biden 36%, other candidates 8.2%
Georgia: Trump 44%, Biden 39%, other candidates 9.3%
Michigan: Trump 43%, Biden 40%, other candidates 8.3%
Nevada: Trump 43%, Biden 40%, other candidates 9.2%
North Carolina: Trump 47%, Biden 38%, other candidates 8.7%
Pennsylvania: Trump 46%, Biden 40%, other candidates 6.3%
Wisconsin: Trump 46%, Biden 43%, other candidates 6.5%
    National: Trump 44%, Biden 38%, other candidates 8.4 %

And in a bit of a shocker, Trump now has the advantage in Virginia, 45-43

I may be half blind, but I’m not stupid. As much as I hate to say it, Joe appears to be losing the support of his party for a second term, and while I don’t trust polls for shit, they are trending the wrong way. I can’t, and won’t, say that Joe can’t defeat Dumbass in November, and I still support him and am not jumping off the train yet,  but the club I’m in reminds me of the church I grew up in – which was pretty well attended until I left o go to college, and had fewer and fewer members over the next 35 years as my parents’ generation died off and was closed and the small remaining congregation merged with another Presbyterian Church 5 years or so ago.

I’m with Biden unless he decides otherwise.
Not pleased with those pushing him out.  I believe that Dr. Jill has a level head and if she hasn’t advised him to leave for the sake of the country and/or his health, then he’s capable of serving another term.  I know he can win!  I hope that those who think they know better aren’t wrong.

Good crop this year for Kennedy Center honors.  WaPo

Coppola, Raitt and the Dead make latest Kennedy Center Honors class

The Apollo is the first theater honored, along with filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and musicians Arturo Sandoval, the Grateful Dead and Bonnie Raitt.

Three artists, a band and a building walk into the Kennedy Center.

Well, that’s probably not how it’ll happen. But in an unusual twist, storied Harlem theater the Apollo, New York’s gravitational center for Black arts which turns 90 this year, is among the 47th class of Kennedy Center honorees.

The honor “certainly wasn’t expected,” said the Apollo’s president and CEO, Michelle Ebanks. “Artists receive this award. But then the Apollo is an iconic stage for artists.”

The class announced by the arts center Thursday also includes some famous human names: renowned filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola; blues-rock star Bonnie Raitt; celebrated Cuban American trumpeter and composer Arturo Sandoval; and beloved band the Grateful Dead, whose living honorees are Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir.

Well deserved for each honoree.

Fred Wellman, just another dude with an opinion:
A lot of people ask my why I have steadfastly stood in support of President Biden and VP Harris in the midst of all of this. Aside from their record of astounding success and stability…I live in the real world. I hear from regular voters all the time. This isn’t the West Wing or Fantasy Sports. I am also clearly a target based on the last year of fun things that have happened. I don’t have the luxury to fantasize about woulda, coulda, shoulda. I am here now.
Just like when I flew a scout helicopter designed in 1958 with no weapons into the first modern tank mechanized war in 1991…this is the team and tools I have and I am going to fly the shit out of it and win. We did. I firmly believe we have the message and moment to win this election if our side doesn’t throw it away.
There are people that have decided that there is this magical “better option” less than three months before the election and even less before early voting. If President Biden does change his mind, I will throw myself at whomever the ticket is, but this fantasy politics shit has got to end
We know who our opponents are. They are even worse than a month ago. I’ll take the old ass aircraft that you have to coax into the air today over some fantasy machine that doesn’t even exist tomorrow. We are fighting the wrong people.

the money dried up, man, it’s over

from CC’s nbc link:

“ A person with knowledge of the projections said the Biden campaign now expects it will raise only 25% of the big donor money it had originally projected to raise in July — that’s a further downgrade from the expectation last week that large-dollar fundraising would be down by as much as 50%. The money has “dried up,” this person said. ”

If Joe decides to tough it out….The donors might have another think coming.

Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, 597 U.S. 215 (2022), is a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the court held that the Constitution of the United States does not confer a right to abortion. The court’s decision overruled both Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), returning to individual states the power to regulate any aspect of abortion not protected by federal statutory law.

Just an aside…..this will be first national vote on abortion. Nobody can even pretend to be able to predict how this election will turn out.

Georgia Warren of the Guardian on J D Vance

Since his rise to fame and transition to politics, Vance has proved himself to be an enthusiastic, opportunistic flip-flopper. As Washington DC bureau chief David Smith pointed out in his analysis of the former president’s pick (“In JD Vance, Trump has picked a mini-me offering red meat to his Maga base”) Vance “once eviscerated Trump as ‘cultural heroin’ and a demagogue ‘leading the white working class to a very dark place’… [but now] he is all-in for the Maga brand of populist-nationalism, echoing Trump on abortion, climate, election denialism, immigration and America-first isolationism – a terrible blow to Ukraine”.

It’s not only Vance’s political conversion that has drawn criticism. As author and educator Neema Avashia wrote for us this week (“I’m from Appalachia. JD Vance doesn’t represent us – he only represents himself”) Hillbilly Elegy’s pitiless account of the impoverished people with whom Vance grew up was unrecognizable to many who live there, especially its non-white population. It was an insult further compounded, as Neema put it, by the fact that “his narrative and the people and institutions who championed it, who profited off it, are why he is Trump’s pick for vice president”.
