  1. David Horsey’s op ed at Seattle Times accompanying that ‘toon:

Hurricanes, wildfires, dust storms, monsoons and extreme heat — all of these environmental disasters are growing bigger and more frequent as the planet grows hotter due to climate change.
The resulting chaos and pain is not hitting all humans equally. The least fortunate among us are suffering the most, from the workers who toil outdoors in gardens, agricultural fields and construction sites, to the millions of poor in developing countries who lack adequate shelter or the financial resources it takes to be shielded from extreme climate events.
The richer one is, the easier it is to live in air-conditioned comfort or fly off to places with milder temperatures. Among those lucky few are those who have amassed their wealth in the oil and gas industry, the carbon-spewing enterprise that is a major contributor to the greenhouse gases that are driving the climate phenomenon.
No wonder they would prefer to stay cool rather than stop pumping the fuel that is the cause of so much misery.

  2. glad to see Joe’s announced agenda listed by Craig last night includes “Keep leading the world” on climate change & clean energy.

In Detroit, Biden pitches his 100-day plan for 2025:

Restore Roe v. Wade. Pass the John Lewis voting rights bill and Freedom To Vote Act. Eliminate medical debt. Raise minimum wage. Pass the PRO Act. Ban assault weapons. “Keep leading the world” on climate change & clean energy.

altho’ not much of an effort to be the climate leader in a world seemingly hell bent on going to Hell as fast as it can burn down rainforests, gulp petrol and spew smoke in the winds of wars.

  3. maher, even tho’ I disagree with a lot of what he said,  he’s right in last night’s comment about america:  “it’s run by mean girls … mean girls in the press and in politics…and when they smell blood in the water the lust to finish off a vulnerable person will never be denied”

The issue with President Biden isn’t if he will be replaced – it’s who will replace him.

  4. Biden got positive coverage in Michigan, and probably more of it because of this mess. CNN and MSNBC carried the entire rally speech live (even FOX carried the first 5 minutes). He upped his game quite a bit, especially the numerous attacks on Trump. And btw, his NATO press conference, which was live on all channels and networks, drew 25 million viewers.

  5. “mean girls”?  wtf does that even mean

cut down on the pot, Bill

Hey, i’m still reading the tea leaves and they’re not saying anything much different, internal polling must be bad

  6. Does anyone know anything about the Koch organization “Stand Together”?

    And Mahar is wrong.

  7. On the too damn many people front:  Tourists unwelcome.  Juneau law would ban cruise ships one day a week.

City wants to ban cruise ships amid ‘overwhelming’ tourist overrun (nypost.com)

And this isn’t the only place.  All over the world cities are caught between wishing the tourists would just stay away and needing the jobs their presence requires.  Whether traveling for fun or refugees massing at borders, millions of people want to be somewhere other than home.

  8. I empathize with Maureen Dowd here:

“The Biden crew is hectoring journalists to leave the president alone and explain how awful Donald Trump is. I have used every damning word in the thesaurus, thrice, about Trump. And I’ll invent some new ones if I have to. (Suggestions welcome.) But it is not my fault if 2016 Hillary Clinton and 2024 Biden are unable to prosecute the case against a candidate with as many psychoses and felonies as Trump. It’s theirs.”

  9. Maureen also tells a story about Jill that I had not heard before:

“Jill should come to her senses, protect her husband from the humiliations to come, and repeat the trick of 2004 that made her feelings clear about a possible presidential run. She walked into the room at their Wilmington home where advisers were imploring her husband to get into the race, wearing a halter top with the word “No” scrawled on her belly”

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/13/opinion/biden-president-age-time.html

  10. Trying to see where this race stands based on national polls while we wait for more and better battleground polls:

For starters, Biden needs to win the national popular vote by a fairly significant amount to win the electoral college. In 2020 he won by 4.5 points for his 306 electoral college votes (Hillary won by 2pts but lost). So if we take at face value his standing right now is anywhere from 2 points behind to 2 points ahead, he really has up to 6 points to make up.

That’s actually quite a bit considering how static this contest has been in the past year of polling. But it’s doable. I’d say Biden is the underdog, but not doomed.

  11. I’ve googled the STAND TOGETHER  Org. and it’s founded by the remaining Koch brother as philanthropic group….he says he’s moved the org away from partisan politics as he was always less political than the brother who passed.

  12. Plus a surprise video message from Putin.

NYT: Tucker Carlson will be getting a prime time speaking slot at the Republican Convention on the night Trump is nominated

  13. maybe the tucker is the apprentice surprise veep.

drumpf goes for whomever would bring more splash. I look for his VP announcement to be someone other than the 3 guys he’s been parading lately on the bathing suit runway.  depends mostly on who can provide him the most money.  heck, even nikki is still a possibility if she brings in more top tier donors along with her primary voters.

there’s also the matter of who putie the puppet master wants as vp (drumpf is old, out of shape and not likely to live 4 more years actuarially speaking) and how much dough he’ll cough up backing his choice.

  14. Russian support has to become painful for him. Now is just Putin ? Ho hum.
He’s in league with a foreign power who is bent on undermining our elections.

  15. DirkSchwenk
So let’s get this straight. Justice Thomas went to Russia, in secret, with Harlan Crow. The trip included a helicopter ride to a palace in St. Petersburg. It took place in 2003. This is the first known yacht trip. Let’s examine the implications. A thread

    DirkSchwenk
I also find it almost impossible that US intelligence services did not also know about this in real time. George Bush and George “waterboard” Tenet CIA DIR must have known Thomas was in Russia on a bribe/junket. They kept his secret, too. Russia knew it had leverage there, too

  16. Thomas was very silent from the day he was installed in the court formerly known as supreme.  From his scribblings made after breaking his silence we know more about him.  All the outpouring of information about bribery fills out even more of his lack of character.  There is one little thing I am happy about, because he wrote virtually nothing by the time I had to study anything with his name on it there was nothing to read and understand.

  17. speaking of Clarence

Jack Smith says Clarence Thomas’ attack on his appointment should not factor into classified documents case | CNN Politics

Special counsel Jack Smith told the judge in the classified documents case in Florida that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ criticism of his appointment should have no bearing on the criminal case against former President Donald Trump.
In a brief filing Friday, Smith said that Thomas’ writing in the presidential immunity case – in a concurrence that no other justice joined – isn’t binding on US District Judge Aileen Cannon.
Nor does it provide “a sound basis to deviate from the uniform conclusion of all courts to have considered the issue that the Attorney General is statutorily authorized to appoint a Special Counsel,” Smith said.
In a filing last week, Trump’s lawyers brought to Cannon’s attention both the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling and the concurrence that Thomas wrote in that dispute. That ruling directly arose out of the election subversion case against Trump in Washington, DC, but may have an impact on all four criminal cases against him.
Trump’s legal team told Cannon that Thomas’ concurrence bolstered the former president’s arguments for dismissing the charges in Florida on the basis that Smith was illegally appointed and that the funding of his office violates the Constitution.
In response on Friday, Smith said that he agreed with Trump that both sides should file more briefing on how the high court’s immunity ruling affects the documents case.

  18. Was just thinking how historic to see a nominee arrive at his convention on bail under conditions of pretrial release that forbid him from discussing his cases with witnesses and alleged coconspirators also at the convention.

  19. https://www.texastribune.org/2024/07/08/hurricane-beryl-texas-damage-updates-rain/

“Nearly 2.3 million CenterPoint customers were without power on July 8 after Hurricane Beryl swept across Greater Houston.   As of Saturday morning, 689,000 households and businesses it serves lacked electricity.”

”Across the state, 776,000 businesses and households across several counties still lacked electricity as of Saturday morning.”

“Temperatures in the Houston area are expected to hit the high 80s Saturday and low 90s Sunday.  Humidity is also a factor — topping out at 77%. Scattered thunderstorms are also expected throughout the day.”

  20. mental health break and truly mesmerizing

Something different from Marc Emory to give us a quick break from political parody and also a brief reminder of the beauty of the earth.

  21. McCartney says he learned a lot about playing the bass by listening to Jamie Jamerson, Mo-Town stalwart.

  22. CBS reporter Scott McFarlane: “Medical emergencies left and right at the Trump rally here in Butler County, PA. They’ve offered no shaded areas in audience .. and the small pallets of bottled water aren’t sufficient. Several calls of “medic, medic, medic” amid crowd

  23. the guy sure likes thinning out his own herd

vote blue, red’s dropping like flies

  24. convicted-guy is a legitimate sociopath, no wonder he doesn’t want to be tested

Just saying guys, sometimes i have little weekend get-togethers and cancel them because they’re too hot and i want everyone to be safe

    it’s called “basic human decency”

  25. Sturg, saw an interesting comment at Quora talking about McCartney as a bass player. The guy, some sort of aging moojician said he didn’t see Paul as a bassist, but rather as a songwriter and musician who plays a bass guitar on a lot of songs. I think he’s got a point, and I bet Paul didn’t write many if any songs with a bass on his lap.

  26. The documentary demystifies the boys, Paul does indeed write “Get Back” with a bass on his lap, but does write more on piano

    …was a bit of a t—t, also

it’s not what they played, it’s how they played it- “Get Back” is essentially a one chord song

  27. https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/12/us/vending-machines-ammunition-alabama-texas-oklahoma/index.html

“Vending machines selling ammunition will now be in grocery stores in Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma…”

“American Rounds, the distributor of the machines, uses AI technology to scan the customers’ identification as well as facial recognition software to verify a customer’s identity, according to the company’s website.”

“The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has allowed the machines, telling CNN in a statement: “A federal license is not required to sell ammunition. However, commercial sales of ammunition must comply with state laws as well as any applicable federal laws.”

“American Rounds plans to expand into more states, having already received offers from stores in California, Florida and Hawaii, among others, Magers said. “

  28. pretty gross, BiD considering at least two recent mass shootings have been at grocery stores

scumbag who started the biz named “Magars”, lol

  29. I’m in the room with a MAGAt who found out from a phone call from another MAGAt, who is now “ashamed to live in this country.” I’m not saying a word & I’m worried.

  30. Blood in the water. The MAGAts are worked up now.

Too soon for a conspiracy theory: Inside job to whip up a civil war?

    Smells kind of Poo-tinish.

  31. (practicing saying “…hadn’t heard, i don’t follow politics” in the mirror)

my conspiracy theory is that a mentally ill person had unreasonably easy access to guns due to insufficient gun control

  32. All of those good guys with guns around him didn’t keep him from getting shot.  Go figure.

  33. “thoughts and prayers”.  Nothing makes one focus as being shot at (can’t remember who said that).  Hope stupid understands that he irritates some people.  Will this turn the fat blob into a martyr? Nah, he already was one.  The one result from this that would be great is if the orange moron finds one emotion, fear. He feels no emotions so an ear cleaning would be useful.

  34. I’m hearing from the MAGAt in residence who is on a grapevine with others, that if it turns out to be a Dem that did it, “all hell’s gonna break loose.”

  35. Did the MAGAts really not want everyone talking about ROE & Project 2025 so much that they would set this up?

  36. the only was someone could be “fine” after that is if was a bb gun

who would do such a thing

NPR has good coverage right now

Good official statement from President Biden

  37. I am increasingly discovering it’s best to stick to “light topics” with my maggers.

Their main sources are church, fox, and hallmark channel.

  38. Apparently there were seven shots from outside the rally perimeter.  One attendee injured in addition to the one killed.

  39. don’t be surprised if this photo is already on tee shirts to be sold to magaTs at highest price possible.

get used to seeing it ’cause it’ll pop up on billboards, posters and yard signs from now ’til nov. … and probably after if the dictator ascends to power. god forbid.

  40. Statement from President Joe Biden | The White House

I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.
I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.
Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.

  41. Wish the shooter wasn’t dead.  Too much room for all the conspiracy crowd to fill in the blanks before the facts are determined.

  42. So, the MAGAt in residence heard the shooter was a Chinese national and is blaming Biden for the Chinese invading from Mexico.

  43. Donald J. Trump
    @realDonaldTrump
I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

  44. figured this was coming, but actually it’s sooner than I expected…

    J.D. Vance
    @JDVance1
Today is not just some isolated incident.
The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.
That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.

  45. posts video of Trump yelling

…they must skip over the “sow the wind, reap the whirlwind” part

skip over a lot of parts, apparently

  46. One thing about this Trump crowd, I won’t be surprised if they blow an opportunity for sympathy by going over the top with wild accusations and spooking swing voters with their war rhetoric. That Trump “Fight Fight” video sets the scene.

Dem message could be this is the kind of chaos and carnage that comes with electing this mad man.

  47. thank you Mr. Crawford your praise ameliorates the anxiety attack a little 😊

picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue

Hey i was out among strangers and some guy for some reason pulls out his phone, plays the video, and then pontificates loudly about whats’s wrong with society, yada yada, and upon completion among this group looks at me (of course) for validation and says “…know what i mean?”

i paused for a bit and said “How ‘bout them Yankees?”

    everyone laughed

  48. My day, a few minutes before the murder behind the orange blob, was a sigh and RIP for Richard Simmons.  A fascinating person who burned out being a celebrity.

As for the orange coward, word is now that a shattering teleprompter sprayed glass shards.  The fat slob did not even get grazed by lead.  I am enjoying the massive outpouring of creative, and stupid, conspiracy theories as to who tried to take out sfb.  My favorite so far is Puttie is not happy and wants to kick start a civil war in the U.S.

  49. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene🇺🇸 @RepMTG
Someone just tried to ASSASSINATE President Trump.
The Democrats and the media are to blame for every drop of blood spilled today.
For years and years, they’ve demonized him and his supporters.
Today, someone finally tried to take out the leader of our America First and the greatest President of all time. President Trump said “FIGHT,” SO WE WILL!!

  50. BB, just saw the video. Both teleprompters are standing and seems intact after DA took the dive. I report, you decide.

  51. Dems will stop Orange Adolf and Project 2025 at the ballot box.

It’s the MAGAt horde who have blood lust.  His parting words today were “fight.” How many times has SFB talked about retribution and military tribunals and nastiness. Many!

He’s responsible for Nancy Pelosi’s husband getting hurt.  He’s responsible for the injuries and deaths associated with January 6th.

We know there would be no sympathy from MAGAts if the tables were turned (and I expect the nutjobs to try to turn them), so I’m not feeling sympathetic toward him.  There is no place for political violence in this country…so tell that the J6 gang.

I’m still hoping he gets that golf course lightening bolt.  He loved golf; he said he would prefer electricity to a shark.  As you wish.

Maybe the scratch on his ear will get infected.

  52. Concentrate on the AR-15 not the shooter’s politics. They’re the ones causing AR-15’s all over the place. They got hoist on their own petard.

  53. There is a great deal of sanity going on over on Threads.  I may desert the blue bird of Elon except for my music buddies.

  54. What could it hurt

you trying to say i’m out of brain cells?! 😜

i still have a few, and they are exceedingly resilient! 🫡

  55. If someone else hadn’t been killed, I would think this was definitely done to distract folks from Project 2025.

    Mars/Uranus Conjunction 2024

  56. Maybe now they’ll be interested in a little bit of background checks.    Yeah, maybe crazy people with assault rifles ain’t such a good idea after all.

  57. BettyBowers
Today, Donald Trump was injured by an assault rifle being fired. He was surrounded by armed Secret Service agents and snipers positioned on the roof. So what chance do we have at the mall? Or our children have at school—even with “good guys with guns”.

  58. BREAKING: Thomas Matthew Crooks ID’d as the suspect who shot at Donald Trump at his PA rally.

Crooks was 20-years-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania which was about 40 miles south of the Butler rally.

An AR-15 was reportedly recovered at the scene.

Crooks was apparently shot in the head after he tried taking out the former president.

  59. If the MAGAt outpouring of concern for children impacted by gun violence was even half of the concern they are showing for the orange monster who had gallows and hit list in January of 2021.

  60. spent the day at the annual family reunion. Actually had an interesting conversation with a maga supporter. He is a young police officer in a small town in central MO. As  I was leaving he told me about Trump being shot. I just shook my head and said it’s a crazy Fcking world. When I got to my motel room I turned on the TV and remembered why I’ve quit watching  TV news. ABC was afraid to call it a shooting but referred to it as an incident. CBS wasn’t much better. So I went out for a burger and beer.  came back and looked for some trusted sources. It was mostly a lot of nothing. As one would expect.  BTW Jamie I would be very doubtful that any one from the secret service said anything. It just ain’t what they do. Also, if what I read in an AP article is correct nobody from the SS is saying anything. They are too busy being debriefed about their screw up. AP is claiming to have geo located the dead shooter to a building located within 150 meters of the president. How does anybody get that close with a rifle. It has to be well within the security perimeter. The reporters are talking about it being  outside the event perimeter. But security goes way beyond that. I sighted my deer rifles in at that range and since I’m not a great shot was satisfied if I hit a beer can sized object at that range. It is not a long shot.  Which also kicks most conspiracy theories in the ass. A real conspiracy would park a sniper out 400 meters + (quarter mile) with an armour piercing round to get through all the protective barriers…. Then again even that might not work, but nobody is placing their guy well within the security perimeter even if say it was a plot involving  the  “government” they  will at least try to make it look they aren’t incompetent idiots.
So the first thing I can safely say is, this was not an assassination attempt, It was just another good old American mass shooting, welcome to our world Donald.
The second Donald must have every pathetic screwup in Secret Service. Which given how hard he is to work with could be true. The good ones can either pick their assignments or if not, transfer out of the department.
    Jack

  61. …security fuck-up for the ages, definitely, but irresponsibly having these rallies in the sweltering midday heat with medical emergencies happening everywhere and the resulting chaos likely contributed to the confused environment

fortunately everything is on video from a 1000 different angles so that will tamp down some conspiracy theories

Team Biden vindicated for being overprotective of the President and limiting large public appearances

Frankly, whoever it was on Team trump that picked that rally site is an idiot or worse
