Is automation the planned resolution for worker shortages in the fields, construction and health industries due to not resolving the immigration issue?

One thing we know about immigration. Once again thanks to right wingers led by Trump it won’t get fixed but they’d rather use it as a campaign issue.

How the right aims to scuttle border talks.. https://wapo.st/47HHW3D

“a hard-right faction of the party and conservative media ecosystem that are trying to scuttle any deal before it’s even announced. A campaign by influential conservatives that includes misinformation, public pressure and behind-the-scenes lobbying aims to get House Republicans to oppose any deal the Senate reaches.”

Utimately I blame FOX for the border crisis

This is his closing message???

Last night on FOX…

Hannity: What is your closing message to the people of New Hampshire?
Trump: You take immunity from the president, so important, you will have a president that’s not going to be able to do anything.

In other words, vote for me so I can stay out of prison

Sadly it’s a winning message because they believe he’s being railroaded.

I saw that Hannity/Dumbass clip this morning.  If SCOTUS takes that up he’s toast.

On the flip side it’s a get-out-the-vote message for Democrats:

Lock Him Up. Vote Against Trump

It’s Edgar Allen’s birthday? I’d wish him a happy one, but somehow that doesn’t feel like the right sentiment for him. I feel his pain – long intervals of horrible sanity.

speaking of the NH primary….   this is the weirdest primary since I’ve been living here (1979).  The DNC is pissed at us for holding a Democratic primary and has said they won’t seat our delegates at the Democratic Convention.  Almost makes me want to vote on Tuesday for Dean Phillips.  But then I’ve thought about the big picture and will write in Joe Biden.

Rick… who is undeclared… keeps getting literature to vote for any Republican but trump.  He says… why should I help the Republican Party with its trump problem.  He’s undecided as to which ballot to take and for whom to vote.

In the meantime, our state Senate voted unanimously yesterday to bake the first in the nation primary into our state constitution.

Story I heard somewhere was that Poe was on a train bound for a new job and hopefully a new life when the train stopped in Baltimore on what happened to be an Election Day.  He got off to stretch, was recognized by someone and soon  a bunch of them proceeded to take Poe around as a celebrity from poll to poll, plying him with strong drink until such time after the polls closed that he was eventually abandoned and he, completely drunk, passed out in a gutter.

Given the state of automation and AI, there are simply not enough jobs globally for the people available to perform them except at the lowest most labor-intensive level.  It is only by restricting immigration in the developed nations, that these countries maintain their standard of living.

If NH really wants to play hard ball they should just declare that no party that doesn’t field a slate of candidates, with full convention voting rights, in the official primary can’t be on the November ballot. Right now it would be legal. The Democrats would back down immediately.

Jack…  I agree with that sentiment…  it’ll be interesting to see what transpires.

My favorite Poe short story has always been The Cask of Amontillado. Greatest first 3 sentences in English horror literature.

Fortunato had hurt me a thousand times and I had suffered quietly. But then I learned that he had laughed at my proud name, Montresor, the name of an old and honored family. I promised myself that I would make him pay for this — that I would have revenge.

And then it gets better.

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/01/10/sec-approves-rule-changes-that-pave-the-way-for-bitcoin-etfs.html

“SEC approves rule changes that pave the way for bitcoin ETFs”

https://www.reuters.com/technology/bitcoin-etf-hopefuls-still-expect-sec-approval-despite-social-media-hack-2024-01-10/

“The Securities and Exchange Commission said it approved 11 applications, including from BlackRock (BLK.N), opens new tab, Ark Investments/21Shares (ABTC.S), opens new tab, Fidelity, Invesco (IVZ.N), opens new tab and VanEck, despite warnings from some officials and investor advocates that the products carried risks.”

“Bitcoin was last up 3% at $47,300. The cryptocurrency has soared more than 70% in recent months in anticipation of an ETF, and hit its highest level since March 2022 this week.”

“The approvals come a day after an unauthorized person published a fake post on the SEC’s account on social media platform X, saying the agency had approved the products for trading. The agency quickly disavowed and deleted the post.”

“We believed that bitcoin could change the world, and we were and remain excited at the prospect of democratizing access to this asset,” said Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein.

Nope.

“Cryptocurrencies were created as an alternative to fiat currencies — currencies established by and backed by a government such as the U.S. dollar and the euro — but cryptocurrencies are largely used as speculative investments due to their volatility.”

Yep.

“To meet the SEC’s investor protection bar, severalexchanges had proposed working with Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange, to police trading in the underlying bitcoin market. But the issuers scrapped that partnership this week in favor of an existing arrangement with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which was at the core of Grayscale’s court victory.”

“The SEC is currently suing Coinbase for allegedly breaching U.S. securities laws, which the company denies.”

“Dennis Kelleher, CEO of investor advocacy think tank Better Markets, warned that bitcoin was still vulnerable to crypto fraudsters and said approving the ETFs was a “historic mistake.”

“The SEC’s action today has changed nothing about this worthless financial product: bitcoin and crypto still have no legitimate use,” he said

Exactly!

Jennifer Rubin in today’s WaPo on the Biden campaign response to the Joe is Old meme of the repugs:

In response to endless carping about his age,Biden cannot change his birthdate, but he can project an image of vitality and vigor. Indeed, alert voters should have noticed by now the contrast between his cogent, policy-laden speeches and the increasingly unhinged, rambling screeds we get from the GOP front-runner. The contrast might sharpen as four-time-indicted former president Donald Trump launches more rants on more courthouse steps in the coming months.

In the new year, Biden already has made headway in blowing away the right-wing canard that he is enfeebled and out to lunch. The president’s strength and decisiveness in support of U.S. interests stand in stark contrast with Trump, who cozied up to dictators, undermined NATO and allegedlypurloined national security secretsat the end of his presidency.

The Biden campaign has also embraced the “Brandon” meme, transforming an obscene chant into a winking affirmation of Biden’s strength. As Axios reported, “‘Dark Brandon’ — an online meme that portrays the 80-year-old president as a two-steps-ahead Machiavelli — is driving the Biden campaign’s merchandise sales.”

Meanwhile, Biden’s campaign now openly mocks Trump for “confused,” rambling utterances. And when late-night comics pick up the refrain, news outlets and voters alike begin to look for more instances of unhinged, incoherent tirades.

Collectively, the predominant “narrative” might shift to match reality. Biden is old but sharp; Trump is out of shape and out to lunch.

We’ll see how this plays out.

https://www.oxfam.org/en/press-releases/wealth-five-richest-men-doubles-2020-five-billion-people-made-poorer-decade-division

“Wealth of five richest men doubles since 2020 as five billion people made poorer in “decade of division,” says Oxfam”

“We’re witnessing the beginnings of a decade of division, with billions of people shouldering the economic shockwaves of pandemic, inflation and war, while billionaires’ fortunes boom. This inequality is no accident; the billionaire class is ensuring corporations deliver more wealth to them at the expense of everyone else,” said Oxfam International interim Executive Director Amitabh Behar.”

“We have the evidence. We know the history. Public power can rein in runaway corporate power and inequality —shaping the market to be fairer and free from billionaire control. Governments must intervene to break up monopolies, empower workers, tax these massive corporate profits and, crucially, invest in a new era of public goods and services,” said Behar.
“Every corporation has a responsibility to act but very few are. Governments must step up. There is action that lawmakers can learn from, from US anti-monopoly government enforcers suing Amazon in a landmark case, to the European Commission wanting Google to break up its online advertising business, and Africa’s historic fight to reshape international tax rules.”

“If current trends continue, the world will have its first trillionaire within a decade but poverty won’t be eradicated for another 229 years.”

Trillionaire!

“Pastor Facing Criminal Charges After Giving Homeless People Shelter In Ohio Church”

“A pastor in Bryan, Ohio, is facing criminal charges after being accused of allowing homeless people to take overnight refuge in his church, which the city says has led to serious safety and zoning violations.”

“Overnight guests sometimes include people who were turned away from the shelter next door, or people who have been dropped off by police, Dys said.

“They’re complaining about people being there and they’re also bringing people to seek shelter there,” he said of the city’s law enforcement. “It’s really bizarre.”

“Dys on Friday said the city’s statement is “filled with half-truths and malicious innuendo designed to vilify the most desperate and downtrodden in their community.”

Is anyone going to charge Greg Abbott for endangering lives by sending migrants to north to freeze?
