  1. Biden visit underscores MLK’s legacy and Atlanta’s prominence on the global stage – Now Habersham

The music for the service was chosen carefully: The Ebenezer choir and a baritone soloist performed a rousing rendition of “If I Can Help Somebody,” the 1945 hymn that influenced King’s February 1968 sermon “The Drum Major Instinct,” as Biden wiped a tear from his eye.
    […]
After telling the parishioners to “keep the faith,” Biden later linked arms with Warnock, Bottoms and others to sing the final anthem of the service, the continuing mantra of the civil rights movement, “We Shall Overcome.”

that link was this 2016 story about the aforementioned hymn: Martin Luther King Jr. First Heard One Of His Favorite Hymns In Denver | Colorado Public Radio (cpr.org)

and here it is sung by mahalia jackson

  2. also included in joe’s sermon was his grandparents’ “keep the faith” advice.

    here’s ‘toonist gary mccoy’s version:

  4. Arndrea King just mentioned that her daughter, MLK’s only grandchild, now has fewer rights than she had when she was born – fewer voting rights and fewer rights of autonomy over her own body. America should be ashamed.

  5. Joe is just fine.  He will never be an easy, graceful speaker as he deals with his natural stutter, but that doesn’t keep him from being wise and effective.

Love that Rev Warnock said, “He knew to clap on the 2 and 4”.  Again, another major difference from the orange doofus.

  6. Yeah, Joe’s had a good first couple years agenda wise.  That’s come to a screeching halt unless I miss my guess.  You know he’s in a fairly strong position when he’s getting attacked for a suggestion made by a committee member of the CPSC about gas stoves – that did not come from the WH.  That and false equivalence is the best they’ve got?

  7. Gas ranges are terrible to cook on- uneven heating, take forever to heat up, airflow disrupts heating, oh and the fumes are toxic

  8. repugs are gonna find something to bitch about no matter what…   Dems should just go about the business of running this country regardless…

  9. So what was the highest classification on those documents? Also, what rules/laws were broken. If it is just 20 documents, I’m certain that someone knows and could release the information.

  10. From a MLK sermon, read it all.

Within the best of us, there is some evil, and within the worst of us, there is some good. When we come to see this, we take a different attitude toward individuals. The person who hates you most has some good in him; even the nation that hates you most has some good in it; even the race that hates you most has some good in it. And when you come to the point that you look in the face of every man and see deep down within him what religion calls “the image of God,” you begin to love him in spite of – no matter what he does, you see God’s image there. There is an element of goodness that he can never slough off. Discover the element of good in your enemy. And as you seek to hate him, find the center of goodness and place your attention there and you will take a new attitude.

  11. i was just laughing at Republicans’ rush to defend the inferior, antiquated technology of gas stoves on the basis that it’s God’s given right for them, and you, to suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning

    They’re all so dumb

  12. Oops, accidentally bump the knob of your gas stove while cleaning and walk away?  You’ve just made your house explosive, yay gas 🙄

  13. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/16/europe/russian-rambo-ukraine-intl/index.html

“Russian actor Artur Smolyaninov was the star of one of President Vladimir Putin’s favorite films – Now he is classified as a “foreign agent” and faces criminal investigation.”

“He recently recorded a Soviet-era song – Temnaya Noch (Dark Night) – with reworked lyrics.”

“It included the lines: “Take a look, occupier, How maternity homes are without power, How children sit in shelters. And how books are drowned. The Russian night Has reached schools and hospitals.”

“Another verse referred to “a bunker, Where one Führer hides, And a bald little cook, Feeds the Fuhrer from a spoon.” The cook was a reference to Yevgeny Prigozhin, who runs the Wagner private military company and won catering contracts from the Kremlin.”

  14. We had a gas cook stove and a stove for heat in the dining room.  (We also had ice on the walls in the winters.) Every spring, my grandmother would wash all of the curtains.  They were yellow and sticky from the gas.   The walls were sticky, too, and we’d paint about every five years.  Disgusting stuff.   I had my tonsils removed because I got so sick every winter with respiratory things and asthma.  It didn’t help.   Being inside with a smoker in the winter didn’t help, either.
At the age of five, I was shown how to turn on the stove, why the gas smell (additive) meant danger, and to light a match to get it start.  Hmmm.

And, then there was the matter of the open flame.   Potholders.  Flannel nightgown sleeves. Lots of things got branded.

  15. jack, when you wrote “if it’s just 20 documents…”  I wondered if it’s EVEN 20 documents depending on the terminology distinguishing pages or documents made up of pages some of which are marked classified.  as example from this recent CBS news report:

Five more pages marked as classified were discovered at President Biden’s Wilmington home Saturday, meaning roughly 20 records  with classified markings have been uncovered in two locations since November.

so are there 20 pages each marked classified and each referred to as a “document” OR are there only 2 or 3 multi-paged documents with a page or two within marked classified making the whole doc classified?

  16. Are they going to start inquiring about who packed up W’s stuff, Obama’s, Cheney’s?

It looks like tRUMPsky did it intentionally, based on the amount of docs, the attempt to hide.not return/claim they were magically declassified. Big difference, but maybe handling if dics needs to be looked at going forward.

  17. BiD, looks like they’ll have to cast a bigger net to catch all who took home docs

Rudy Giuliani Says Trump Advised Him to Take Top-Secret Files Home (businessinsider.com)

Rudy Giuliani, former President Donald Trump’s one-time personal lawyer, says Trump once advised him to take secret documents home.
Giuliani said he was at Mar-a-Lago, working on “vetting” some “very rich” people — specifically, going through their tax returns for Trump. The incident occurred right after Trump became president, Giuliani said.
“When I was his lawyer, I mean, there was a period of time I was there like, uh, 10 straight days,” Giuliani said on a Sunday episode of the WABC77 radio show, “Uncovering the Truth with Rudy Giuliani & Dr. Maria Ryan.”
“I didn’t take, listen to this, this is my training on ‘top secret:’ I didn’t take them out of Mar-a-Lago,” Giuliani said, describing how he handled the documents.
“He told me, ‘Oh, take them home with you,'” Giuliani said of Trump. “I’m not going to take Wilbur Ross’ tax returns home with me. I could misplace them!”
“I — you know, I never, ever, ever, ever, ever, knowingly, and I never got caught — but I don’t remember ever taking a doc,” Giuliani added. He said he would place documents in a small safe at his desk in Mar-a-Lago to be worked on the next day.
Giuliani also said top secret files are “very, very strange the way they’re put together” and “often are very small, but they contain a lot of information.”

  18. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/16/politics/visitor-logs-biden-wilmington-house/index.html

“Like every President across decades of modern history, his personal residence is personal,” the counsel’s office said in a statement Monday morning. “But upon taking office, President Biden restored the norm and tradition of keeping White House visitors logs, including publishing them regularly, after the previous administration ended them.”

    https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/briefing-book/foia/2017-04-14/trump-hides-white-house-visitor-logs

“Washington, D.C., April 14, 2017 – The Trump White House announced today it would no longer disclose the routine visitor logs maintained by the Secret Service and published online by the Obama administration since 2009, and claimed national security and privacy risks.”

  19. patD – That is hilarious and outrageous in so many ways. Going through the tax records of others.   Rudy just keeps looking worse, too.
    “…and I never got caught…” Ha!

  20. Bink on the gas stove debate, there are 2 sides of dumb on that one.

I’m just curious how they can separate the health hazards of NG from the smoking grease and burn’t bacon.
Want to trigger my asthma , take me to a truckstop with bad ventilation and a smoking deep fryer.

    Jack

  21. Joe Biden is smart and secure enough to know if and when he should quit. I trust him on that. Meanwhile Unity is the key.  Without unity they pick you off, one by one.   (Hang together, or hang seperately, as old Ben put it.)

  22. 1.  Repukes aren’t defending gas stoves. They are using the bs as an albatross they think they can hang around Biden’s neck. If he said ban 20 year old electric stoves they’d be talking about Biden trying to ban electric stoves.

    2.  Repukes are trying to make this a federal government versus state issue. The irony is that it’s not the federal government who is trying to ban gas stoves. The regulations that are out there banning gas stoves in certain new construction are at the city, county and state levels.

    3. That dumb shit DeSantis better take a look at who his audience is. They’re so goddamn dumb – you are not going to find many gas stoves in trailer parks in Florida. In fact, you weren’t going to find many gas stoves in small homes in Florida. Mullets?  Sure. But almost all the assholes that are gonna vote for him probably cook on a fucking electric stove anyway. Again, it’s not gas stoves that they’re talking about.

    4. If Dominion hadn’t come in and punched a  billion holes in West Virginia to Frack the shit out of the place, Joe Manchin would be screaming for all electric. That shit happened in the south when TVA became the primary supplier of electricity for 5 states. Remember all those old Reddy Kilowatt commercials? Didn’t have a goddamn thing to do with whether or not electric stoves, heat, air conditioning, etc. are healthy or economical. It had everything in the world to do with who made money if people used electricity to power stoves, heaters, air conditioning, etc. Well that’s Manchin today. Unfortunately, he has confused donors. His primary donors, not to speak of his primary source of income, are in the business of fossil fuel. Primary use of natural gas is all well and good, but Joe wants to appeal to people who are too fucking stupid to understand that it doesn’t matter whether their energy is coming to a gas fired cook stove or an electric cook stove – one way or another the source of the energy that’s going into the house to make heat got pulled out of the ground in West Virginia to make the energy that it’s powering.

    5. My next HVAC will probably be a heat pump. – unless a shiny new technology that puts heat pumps to shame comes along. When my current ones were installed anything better than 90% efficient was considered to be good for the environment. But that was back in the good old days, you know 20 years ago?

    6. And I love cooking with gas, but you gotta have a really good gas stove and good ventilation to do it.
