J6 Shock And Awe

Committee releases its report. Haven’t gotten through all 845 pages yet but wow, it’s time for Bureau of Prisons to measure Pumpkin Head for his jump suit.

Despite the length it’s an easy read, written like an historical novel but with end notes and appendix chock full of evidence.

So interesting it calls for barring Trump from holding office under 14th Amendment.

Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment prohibits anyone who has previously taken an oath of office (Senators, Representatives, and other public officials) from holding public office if they have “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the United States.

  1. Interesting question about how to invoke 14th ban on holding office. Doesn’t seem to require a jury conviction, maybe not even a court ruling. Might be possible Congress could effectuate that provision on its own?

  2. woke up to -1 and falling more they say as day goes by here in the boonies.  beautifully snow-covered, but downside is the threat of power outages.  gov andy held pressers most of yesterday warning folks to stay off the roads, prepare for loss of utilities, beware of frost bite and take care of the animals, the homeless and the elderly.

craig, really really glad you’ve taken the helm this week.

  3. Freezing in a Winter Wonderland

to be sung to the melody of “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”

    I am cold.
    Are you listening?
    On my nose,
    ice is glistening.

    Why must we roam?
    I wanna go home.
    Freezing in a winter wonderland.

    Gone away is the feeling
in my hands. Face is peeling.
    It is my desire
    to be by the fire.
I’m freezing in this winter wonderland.

No, I do not want to build a snowman.
Both my feet are numb up to my knees.
I would rather be beneath an afghan,
safe inside from this sub-zero breeze.

Take me home. I’m not playing.
Can’t you hear what I’m saying?
    I see my own breath.
    I’m freezing to death
    walking in this winter wonderland.

  4. it is now -5 with wind gusts.  brrrrr.  hope laverne, shirley and ethel (the chickens) are living up to their buff orpington cold weather breed claim.  am dreading the changing of their water trek which is an all-day duty in winter.  probably will ice up before i even get to the coop. the water that is, not me.

  5. jamie,  thanks for the well wishes on the power.  have only experienced a couple of glitches in computer usage so far.

BTW, have there been any aftershocks in your neck of the woods related to the earthquake in no. cal the other day?

  6. Patd, you’re a few hours ahead of us. Woke up to 9° and falling. Supposed to get to one below by about 1 PM and will be in single digits for at least 2 to 3 days. Won’t see a temp above freezing until mid day Wednesday. The wind is freaking fierce. 22 mph and gusting to near 50. Silver lining is that we did not get any snow to speak of, but there was plenty of rain during the night before the temperature started, so got slick roads. I ain’t going anywhere today.

  7. Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind music by John Rutter, words by William Shakespeare sung by CLOSER (Beverley Worboys, Sara Parry, Michael Robinson, Trevor Conner) Photography by Lukas Fluri

    Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind

    Blow, blow, thou winter wind
    Thou art not so unkind
    As man’s ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
    Because thou art not seen,
    Although thy breath be rude.

Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
    Then heigh-ho, the holly!
    This life is most jolly.

    Freeze, freeze thou bitter sky,
That does not bite so nigh
    As benefits forgot:
    Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
    As a friend remembered not.
Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
    Then heigh-ho, the holly!
    This life is most jolly.

All the aftershocks have been steadily smaller.  Two lives lost but for emergency reasons not directly from the quake.  the nervous making part is the location offshore making it a likely place for future activity.

As a native, I’m rather amused by anything under a 7, and people who face tornados every year who are afraid of them.  the BIG ONE will destroy the state at some point in the next hundred years, but after waiting for it for 78 years, I’ve probably moved away in time.

Daughter and granddaughter are in Sacramento so are probably on the good side of the fault line.

  9. The work of the Jan. 6 committee has been really impressive, IMO.

It’s warm up here in NH…  we are getting rain.  The cold comes later tonight.  Gonna sit on the couch in a few minutes and curl up with the book I took out of the library a few days ago.

  10. jamie, about those people who face tornados every year”  i’m likewise amused by my FL friends who are more concerned about my infrequent KY tornadoes then they are about the multi-tornado filled hurricanes they have several times a year.  at least basements are more prevalent here than there and having a storm room gives me much more comfort and protection than what I had in FL

  11. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi delivered remarks on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address to Congress at her final weekly news conference before the GOP takes control.

she also said during that last presser:

“I say the best advice I ever had that I extend to you is: Be yourself. You’re the only person in the history of the world who was you … I get overwhelmed by women telling me how I’ve given them confidence or a role model … and I said, ‘Don’t worry about any role model. Be yourself.'”

    and

“The 117th Congress began with a violent assault on our democracy. And now we’re here at its conclusions. We have a vital roadmap and ensuring justice will be done and that this won’t happen again,”

    and

I think that probably the most overwhelming thing I’ll be doing forever is saying ‘thank you,'”

“Thank you to my members, thank you to the intellectual resources that have helped us with policy. Thank you for those who have helped us politically to attain our majorities and our strength in the Congress,…I think my life will be about accountability, to the record, the history, and thank you to those who made all that possible.”

  12. The conspiracy folks on Twitter are saying the Zelenskyy’s visit was plotted to totally mimic the Churchill visit with the date, fatigues, and Congressional speech.

They all read like they were dictated by Putin.

  13. I was in what I had thought to be the middle of a magnificent series of purple patch paragraphs wherein I was fiercely and unrelentingly lacerating the characters of your average MAGAts when I suddenly realized that I had actually reached the apex…..and that all those beautiful words could be melted down into one single succinct hard-metal phrase:  “They suck”.

  14. Well we are currently at 1 degree. Interesting weather, our cold low was midnight at 8 below. ordinarily with a polar plunge like this it would only get worse. But at midnight the wind shifted to the west and we started to warm up. Not very fast, there is a lot of cold Canadian air out there still.
As they say It’s Missouri, don’t like the weather wait a few minutes.
    Jack

  15. Sturge
Isn’t that most pissed off arguments.
But you gotta have all those flowery words.
If not then it goes like this. That sucks, really sucks, I mean really really sucks, suck suck suck suck suck…
And then everybody starts laughing at you.
Besides if we reduced everything to those elementals then the New Yorker could be written on a page and a half paper. With a full page ad.
    Jack

  16. Reminds me.
It must of been 10 year or so ago, Mrs Jack drug me off on vacation, we went to Florida, did the Disney world thing for a couple of days, cut across to where they shot the rockets off. Stopped, thinking about going through their museum but they wanted to much money, I can find pictures and it was not like they were going to let me touch a moon rock anyway.
We went down to Coco beach, Kind of an interesting Florida in transition place where the beach front is lined with 60’s ranch style houses interspersed with modern plastic glass highrise hotels. We were in one of the highrises, a Hilton of course, as Mrs Jack was a diamond member, which meant she spent more time in a Hilton then she did in our house.
Any way the moral of the story.
As usual in our winter gulf coast vacations we took the cold weather with us and it was just above freezing 35, 36. We doing a morning walk on the beach, wrapped up in our hoodies when out of one of the hotels ran a group of young ladies 12, 13, in their bikinis out to the water. Just as happy as they could be.  As their adult escort told us “We’re from Canada”

  17. https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/23/middleeast/iran-footballer-amir-nasr-azadani-execution-intl/index.html

“Terrified Iranian families believe that while the Western world is preoccupied with Christmas celebrations, a wave of executions in the country is imminent following the recent protests that have swept the country following the death in September of Mahsa Amini, a young woman detained by Iran’s notorious morality police for being accused of improperly wearing her hijab.”

  18. jack, finally got up to 1 degree here just now.  thanks for sending it.

pogo, did the snow ever make it to WVa?  it sure looked like it was headed that way.

  19. Not going to work today involved NOT going to the beach……lol
I played Cocoa Beach once for 2 weeks backing the 3 singing daughters of Opry star Billy Walker.   We had rehearsed for 2 weeks and worked up enough material for 2 good solid shows and then hit the road to Cocoa…..2 solid shows are great for a weekend or a 3 nighter but 6 nights a week for 2 weeks might be spreadin’ it a bit thin.
So, the last night we’re packing up and loading out, I’m sitting at the bar, the bartender leans over and says, “I think y’all coming back this winter…..:    I bite.   “Oh yeah?”   He says, “Yeah, I heard the boss say it’d be a cold day.”    “Ha ha”, I said.
We stayed the 2 weeks in an adult motel which showed hard porno movies.   We got to where we could tell who was having sex by the music that was playing……..

  20. Tom Cole eyed as potential House Speaker – ICT (indiancountrytoday.com)

With the Republican Party in turmoil over who will become the next House Speaker, Indigenous Congressman Tom Cole of Oklahoma is being eyed as a possible compromise candidate.

It is the second time that Cole, Chickasaw, has been considered a contender for the speaker’s position. He was also questioned in 2015 about the speakership but stated at the time he had no interest in the position.

Now Cole, the longest-serving Indigenous member of Congress, is set to begin his 20th year in the U.S. House in January after easily winning re-election to Oklahoma’s 4th Congressional District.

He could not be reached for comment by ICT about the latest speakership, but his name surfaces repeatedly in speculation about who might lead the GOP if Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy cannot drum up the necessary votes to advance.

“Tom Cole has checked all the boxes,” said Mike Stopp, a Republican political consultant. “He has been the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which is the political arm of the House members. He knows how to raise money and he knows how to get Republicans elected.

“He’s the ranking member on two of the most important committees in the House, which are the Appropriations Committee and the Rules Committee.”

    […]

Cole’s name is among a string of possible contenders as McCarthy, now the minority leader, remains on the hunt to secure the necessary 218 votes to become House Speaker.

The Republican party gained a small number of seats in the midterm elections in November, fewer than expected but enough to take the majority. Despite being expected to garner over 20 seats, however, the party was able to gain only nine. That means that if just four Republicans refuse to vote for McCarthy he would not ascend to Speaker of the House.

Cole has a history of criticizing Trump.

In March 2017, when Trump was almost a few months in office, Cole said Trump should apologize for accusing his predecessor, Barack Obama, of wiretapping him.

“I see no indication that that’s true,” said Cole. “And so it’s not a charge I would have ever made. And frankly, unless you can produce some pretty compelling proof, then I think the president, you know, President Obama is owed an apology in that regard.”

The following November, Cole labeled Trump calling Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) “Pocahontas” – a reference to Warren claiming Native American heritage – as “insensitive and unnecessary.”

In July 2019, Cole called out Trump’s xenophobic tweet telling minority members of the far-left congressional group The Squad to go back to where they’re from.

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,” he tweeted.

Cole told NPR that while Trump’s tweet was not racist it was “inappropriate and offensive.”

  22. they can go home now

The House passed a mammoth $1.7 trillion omnibus package on Friday, capping off weeks of drama to lock down government funding for the next fiscal year.

The bill passed largely along party lines, 225-201-1, a day after the Senate approved the bill in a bipartisan vote. The legislation now heads to President Biden’s desk for his signature.

    […]

While the bill drew broad Democratic support, only nine Republicans in the House voted for the measure. Eighteen Republicans voted for it in the Senate.

House GOP leaders whipped their members to oppose it, and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) joined other Republicans in urging Senate GOP lawmakers to oppose it. Some House Republicans vowed retribution on Senate Republicans who backed the omnibus, arguing it should not have been passed with the GOP set to take over the House in weeks.

    […]

Lawmakers also passed a short-term stopgap funding bill to prevent a lapse in government funding while the omnibus gets enrolled.

  23. Jack – back when I lived in Denver area and worked in different places there was one I really liked.  Think of around Cocoa. I would leave zero and below to arrive in seventyish and sun.  Yeah, when I had daylight hours off I would enjoy swimming in the Atlantic, while the locals are in their down parkas.

  24. Pat,  not much snow – an inch or two, but everything else – rain turned to ice on roads, wind and lots of it, sub freezing temps (2 degrees at present).  It’s FUCKING COLD here.
