  1. Pat, you beat me to it. From The Wobblin Goblin by Rosemary Clooney at #50 …

I am only sorry that by virtue of mentioning this song for this list, I may have made people aware of this song who previously weren’t. Your life may be going well; it may be going poorly; one thing I will guarantee is that hearing “The Wobblin’ Goblin” will make it worse. I hesitate to throw around phrases like “a crime against all reason and civilization,” but this song has no redeeming characteristics whatsoever yet still immediately gets stuck in your head…

….to The Monster Mash by Bobby Pickett at#1, …

I put on a playlist of what I thought would be numerous, varied Halloween songs, and instead it was mostly “The Monster Mash,” and everyone in the car still had a good time! Well, I had a good time, and no one else physically ejected themselves from the car, which is about all you can hope for with a Halloween playlist…

…Alexandra counts down the top 50 Halloween songs in her unique and hilarious way. If you don’t find something to laugh at in this list you need to send your Spence of humor in for its overdue major service and tuneup.

  2. a halloween story for craig and all others in the D.C. area. beware the demon (surely to show up if there’s a red wave next tuesday)

A Demon Cat Is Said to Appear at the US Capitol Before National Emergencies (businessinsider.com)

For more than 150 years a demon cat — some say the size of an elephant — is said to appear near the grounds of the US Capitol before national emergencies, according to the White House Historical Association.
“It’s probably the most common of all the ghost stories in the Capitol,” Steve Livengood, the chief tour guide of the US Capitol Historical Societytold Atlas Obscura about the apparition. “Partly because of the physical evidence.”
In 1898, after the Capitol Building was damaged by a gas explosion, paw prints and the initials “DC” — speculated to mean “demon cat” — appeared in the concrete poured to repair the Small Senate Rotunda. While Livengood told Atlas Obscura it was “quite possible” a cat simply walked across the wet concrete, visitors to the Capitol have seen the prints, and news reports of sightings, as evidence of the legend’s veracity.
The ghostly cat, described at times as all black and sometimes with tabby stripes, is said to appear most often to guards of the US Capitol, with sightings reported before the assassination of JFK and just before the stock market crash in 1929, according to the White House Historical Association.
An 1898 Washington Post report about the cat said the creature “swells up to the size of an elephant before the eyes of the terrified observer,” while in 1935 the Post reported after another sighting that the cat’s eyes “glow with the all the hue and ferocity of the headlights of a fire engine.”
Long considered a prophecy of coming tragedy, the first reported sighting of the demon cat was in the United States Capitol in 1862, during the Civil War. A guard was said to have fired his gun at the cat, causing it to disappear. From then on, it was seen in the Capitol building basement before national emergencies, according to the White House Historical Association.
“I can put enough pieces together to know where the legend came from,” Livengood told Atlas Obscura. “The night watchmen were not professionals. They would often be some senator’s ne’er-do-well brother-in-law that had a drinking problem.”
The night watchmen who reported spotting the demonic creature, Livengood said, would often leverage their political connections to avoid trouble for drinking on the job, making up stories of being attacked by the fearsome creature.
“Then the other guards realize that if they see the cat and get attacked, then they get a day off,” Livengood told Atlas Obscura. “And that’s how history gets written.”
The Capitol region has long been rumored to be home to many mythic creatures and ghostly happenings, though the demon cat remains one of the longest-standing legends of the grounds.

Hope you all remain well.  After all these years, the son tested positive for Covid.  None of us are ill, but the lock down is mandatory.  I accused him of going germ hunting since this gets him out of an already scheduled trip to Warren MI.

Mike Pence’s new book reveals key moment before Jan. 6 (axios.com)

In former Vice President Mike Pence’s “So Help Me God” — out Nov. 15 — he describes a scene in November 2020, just after the election, when he and former President Trump met in the Oval Office to review legal challenges with the campaign’s lawyers.

“In the end, that day the president made the fateful decision to put Giuliani and Sidney Powell in charge of the legal strategy … The seeds were being sown for a tragic day in January.”

  11. Senate Democrat wants national security investigation of Saudi Arabia’s role in Elon Musk-Twitter deal | CNN Business

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy is calling on the federal government to investigate national security concerns raised by Saudi Arabia’s role in Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter.
    […]
“We should be concerned that the Saudis, who have a clear interest in repressing political speech and impacting US politics, are now the second-largest owner of a major social media platform,” Murphy said in a tweet on Monday.
The Connecticut Democrat urged the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, known as CFIUS, to conduct an investigation into the “national security implications” of the Saudi involvement. CIFUS, an interagency committee chaired by the US Treasury Department, reviews takeovers of US businesses by foreign buyers and has the ability to block transactions that raise concerns.
Even though Musk already closed his takeover of Twitter late last week, it may still be subject to national security review.
According to the 2021 annual CFIUS report to Congress, the panel has the authority to “review pending or completed transactions” if a member of the committee believes there are national security concerns.
“There is a clear national security issue at stake and CFIUS should do a review,” Murphy said, noting that another major social media platform, TikTok, is owned by a Chinese company. “This is a dangerous trend, and we don’t have to accept it.”

  12. Still no concession from bolsonaro. Maybe he’s also avidly waiting on the midterms.

  13. patd – recently I saw a photographic series showing cat paws in places they should not be over thousands of years.  Places like Roman tile and plates, Greek pottery, Egyptian works all the way up to Middle Age paintings and to today.  I would not be surprised if space objects, rockets and satellites, don’t have cat paw prints in them.

  14. So, will the 18 to 30 year olds get off their asses and vote ?

It’s their future  in the balance, surely it’s not ours.

  15. Good on Joe.  Tax those bastards’ record (as I understand it) profits.  And while you’re at it find a way to disallow recommissioning costs for refinery capacity in the US that was idled “due to the pandemic” (actually, to reduce supply and increase demand, and price).  Here’s Exxon as an example from macrotrends.

Exxon annual/quarterly gross profit history and growth rate from 2010 to 2022. Gross profit can be defined as the profit a company makes after deducting the variable costs directly associated with making and selling its products or providing its services.

Exxon gross profit for the quarter ending September 30, 2022 was $112.070B, a 542.86% increase year-over-year.
Exxon gross profit for the twelve months ending September 30, 2022 was $185.650B, a 262.82% increase year-over-year.
Exxon annual gross profit for 2021 was $64.202B, a 107.49% increase from 2020.
Exxon annual gross profit for 2020 was $30.942B, a 42.47% decline from 2019.
Exxon annual gross profit for 2019 was $53.786B, a 16.86% decline from 2018

Think Exxon may be trying to put the old thumb on the scale in the 3rd quarter runup to the midterm elections?
And it isn’t just here from statista.

As soaring fuel prices are set to push one in three people in the UK into energy poverty this fall, Big Oil companies are seeing record profits. Today, BP announced that its profits between April and June had tripled since this time last year, hitting $9.3 billion – the company’s highest quarterly profits in 14 years. And they’re not alone. British energy giant Shell revealed in their latest report that their second-quarter adjusted earnings hit $11.5 billion – more than double the figure from Q2 in 2021. France’s TotalEnergies and Spain’s Repsol also saw hikes in their net profits, with gains of $2.2 billion and $2 billion, respectively.

As our chart shows, the energy companies Exxon and Chevron have seen the biggest leaps in their profits. Compared to last year’s second quarter, Exxon’s earnings skyrocketed from $4.7 billion to $17.9 billion, while Chevron’s grew from $3.1 billion to $11.6 billion.

Gas prices in the U.S. have risen by more than $1 a gallon on average since 2021. It’s a similar tale in Europe, where energy prices are threatening to push the bloc’s largest economies into recession. This isn’t only costing consumers more at the pump, but also in terms of heating and deliveries, with UK media reporting that people are already having to choose between warmth and food. One possible countermeasure carried out in countries such as Greece, Spain and Italy – and currently contemplated in multiple others – is to introduce a windfall tax on Big Oil companies to ease the burden on low income and middle income households.

And if that doesn’t piss you off, try this:

  16. How many of you have/had MySpace.com accounts?  I know it goes as “what that is long gone” or “not anymore” or worse.  The site went off and was sold (at least once) and is now a great music site.  Find your login info and join in to hear some great music.  I use headphones to hear it best.

Yup.  No longer is MySpace the FB before FB. It gave up trying to be FB and is now an artist site.  Pretty cool.

  17. Dying  in a crowd  ……..
I was attending  a concert at the stadium at CU Boulder.  The gates opened the herd moved  forward , and someone stepped on the back of my right shoe . My foot was frozen in place but the mass was still moving .  A wave of terror  flooded  my body, as my right heel was leaving the shoe. I was going down .  Then the offending shoe behind me released it’s grip .  I was free .
And I kept my choe .  To this day I cannot remember who was on the bill that afternoon.  That deluge of  adrenaline.  wiped out every other event .

  18. Pogo –

  20. The last rant  ………..
    Cats
Bird populations are crashing around the world. For many many reasons.  And I love cats .
The simple idea that as we expand , our cats do too is hard to swallow.

But it is a hard truth  cats kill birds.  Billions of birds.

Welcome to the 21st Century .

A time of  unsolvable  problems in search of solutions.

  21. Just finished walk/march/dancing up Sixth Avenue in the West Village Halloween Parade.  If you see a clip on the news, I was the one not smoking weed or vaping.   It was very organized, no sense of overcrowding or fear of getting trampled.

There was a dance party at Webster Hall on the LES, but the parade was enough.  Tomorrow, Stephen Colbert with guest Elizabeth Warren.

  22. A time of  unsolvable  problems in search of solutions ,

This idea got me banned .  I had it coming . I was on a mission  of events , and I dumped too many here.
