in the meantime john being all-powerful chief could wrest the reins from clarence who, due to seniority protocol (even though chief is senior to all no matter how short the time in office) precedent has been allowed certain pick and choose power.     [see wikiThe chief justice has significant influence in the selection of cases for review, presides when oral arguments are held, and leads the discussion of cases among the justices. Additionally, when the court renders an opinion, the chief justice, if in the majority, chooses who writes the court’s opinion; ]  roberts, unlike the other conservative, is more incrementalistic and tends toward not rocking the boat when it comes to big societal issues.  therefore, i’d rather see clarence based on his conflicts of interest resign, be impeached or at least not let pick and choose cases and opinion writers.

as to ron and his charity, how ’bout returning to the coffers the thousands of FL taxpayer dollars he misspent to send migrants in TX to MA…  perhaps throw in ethics complaints against him for good measure to the bar and another to the state ethics commission.

colbert last night

Republicans did their best to avoid labeling the former president a racist after his comment about Elaine Chao, and Ukraine’s army took back parts of the country Russia announced it had annexed.

As much as the Florida gov wants to be like SFB he never will be.  Born to a family of Naziis and grifters, SFB was trained to be the criminal he is.  Florida gov can never match it.  I, unfortunately, saw the presser of the Florida grifter telling the world to trust his wife and send in the dollars. Yeah, right.  That will not be a trustworthy thing.

Roberts court.  What a disaster for America and the world.  My thinking is everything is working just as he wants, the big problem for him is we know what is going on.

back to SCOTUS, onion asks “why can’t you take a joke?”

The Onion defends right to parody in very real supreme court brief supporting local satirist | US supreme court | The Guardian

The clarion call of justice is sounding across America once again, thanks to the tireless efforts of its finest purveyor of made-up news.
The Onion, the long-running satirical publication, has filed a very real legal document with the US supreme court, urging it to take on a case centered on the right to parody. And in order to make a serious legal point, the filing does what the Onion does best, offering a big helping of total nonsense.
[…]
With such power, why does the Onion feel the need to weigh in on a mundane court case? “To protect its continued ability to create fiction that may ultimately merge into reality,” the filing asserts. “The Onion’s writers also have a self-serving interest in preventing political authorities from imprisoning humorists. This brief is submitted in the interest of at least mitigating their future punishment.”
The outlet is concerned about the outcome of a case it describes in a headline: “Ohio Police Officers Arrest, Prosecute Man Who Made Fun of Them on Facebook”. It sounds like an Onion headline, the filing points out, but it’s not.
[…]
The filing highlights the history of parody and its social function: “It adopts a particular form in order to critique it from within”. To demonstrate, the Onion cites one of its own greatest headlines: “Supreme court rules supreme court rules”.
The document serves as a rare glimpse behind the comedy curtain – an explanation of how jokes work – even as it serves as a more traditional legal document, pointing to relevant court cases and using words like “dispositive”.
The city of Parma has until 28 October to provide a response in a case that would be heard next year if the high court opts to consider it.
In the meantime, “the Onion cannot stand idly by in the face of a ruling that threatens to disembowel a form of rhetoric that has existed for millennia, that is particularly potent in the realm of political debate, and that, purely incidentally, forms the basis of The Onion’s writers’ paychecks”.

Well, quantum mechanics is back in the news. WaPo

The 2022 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to three physicists for their pioneering experiments in quantum information science, a burgeoning field that could revolutionize computing, cryptography and the transfer of information via what is known as “quantum teleportation.”
(Continues)

Not sure (don’t have a clue) what that means, but it sounds important.

pogo, neither do i and i wonder how many of the nobel judges do.  any way here’s what wiki says:

Quantum teleportation is a technique for transferring quantum information from a sender at one location to a receiver some distance away. While teleportation is commonly portrayed in science fiction as a means to transfer physical objects from one location to the next, quantum teleportation only transfers quantum information. The sender does not have to know the particular quantum state being transferred. Moreover, the location of the recipient can be unknown, but classical information needs to be sent from sender to receiver to complete the teleportation. Because classical information needs to be sent, teleportation can not occur faster than the speed of light.

still don’t know but as you said “it sounds important”

from the ignorance is bliss and the we don’t know what we don’t know files

A guess is that a percentage of Americans will say it is fake because they cannot see anything moving.  (that’s a physics joke)

“quantum teleportation.”

Instantaneous transfer of information, So when you get down to it the human body is just a big blob of genetic information. So when do we get to teleport some of our favorite politicians, ummm, maybe to the back side of the moon?
Along with their favorite Russian, of course.

Well, now I know as little about quantum mechanics and teleportation as I knew yesterday, or maybe a little less since I can add a bit of confusion to the mix.  I had a friend back in my grad school days who worked for the National Geodetic Survey facility at UofAlabama who was a research assistant, had a BA in some science (Chemistry I think) who liked to say he was good with electricity but he never understood alternating current so he didn’t think it existed.

The folks over at the Institute for the Study of War, the go to site for what is happening in Ukraine

Ukrainian forces have made substantial gains around Lyman and in northern Kherson Oblast over the last 24 hours. The Russian units defeated on these fronts were previously considered to be among Russia’s premier conventional fighting forces.

So Ukraine is kicking some serious butt on some of Russia’s best.
The folks over at ISW, also talk about Putin shuffling Generals and pointing fingers.

Pogo, on the quantum stuff, I have long suspected the authors of the “Marvels of quantum computing” stories, are as well informed on the subject as you are. But they are well versed in that form of entertainment called “journalistic BS”

Jack – the Ukraine military has had a big hand in shuffling the orchs generals with a bang.  And, the best has been a KGB agent dictating military strategy and tactics from his hole in the ground a thousand miles away. A guarantee for success no matter who is wearing the shoulder boards.

Because what happens after house arrest in Rusher, is deadly.

https://www.texastribune.org/2022/10/04/texas-national-guard-suicide-operation-lone-star/

“A service member assigned to the Texas National Guard’s border security mission, Operation Lone Star, died by a self-inflicted gunshot Tuesday morning in Eagle Pass…”

“According to the document, the soldier shot himself with his duty weapon around 8:20 a.m.”

“Beto O’Rourke, Abbott’s Democratic challenger who has been critical of Operation Lone Star, lamented the death on social media and decried the treatment of soldiers on the mission…”

“I’m so sorry to hear that a tenth Texas National Guard member has lost their life while deployed under Operation Lone Star,” O’Rourke said.

“The soldier is also the 10th-known Texas Guard member linked to the mission to die since its rapid expansion began in September 2021.”

“The deaths began that month when four troops died by suicide in an eight-week span.”

“By February, two more had died in accidental shootings.”

“In April, then-Spc. Bishop Evans died when he tried to save two drowning migrants in Eagle Pass. Evans was not equipped with a flotation device due to the mission’s long-standing problems with purchasing and fielding critical equipment, a joint Army Times/Texas Tribune investigation found.”

“Then another soldier died of a blood clot after a long security shift in July amid a record heat wave.”

“When the first suicides linked to Operation Lone Star occurred last year, troops on the mission were struggling through pay problems and poor living conditions. Many were also dissatisfied with the large-scale involuntary activations that were required to meet Gov. Greg Abbott’s troop quotas…”

https://www.businessinsider.com/matt-gaetz-ask-aid-vote-no-hurricane-ian-2022-10

“Matt Gaetz is asking the government to fund Hurricane Ian disaster relief in Florida days after he voted against FEMA aid”

“Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz is calling for the US to send aid to Floridians in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian — but he also voted “no” to a bill that carved out cash for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, to do just that.”

“Dear Congress: On behalf of my fellow Florida Man in grave need of assistance…. Just send us like half of what you sent Ukraine…”

“Gaetz’s appeal for funding came two days after he — and 200 other Republicans — voted against a stopgap measure that sought to fund the government through December. Among other provisions, the bill also gave $18.8 billion to FEMA’s disaster relief fund, $12 billion in aid for Ukraine, and $112 million to beef up security at federal courts.”

Ukraine has captured a T-90M MBT — Moscow should be worried: In recent weeks, the Ukrainian military has captured dozens of Russian tanks — with some sources suggesting thenumbers could be as high as 200, while at least 380 tanks have been captured since the war began in February.
Among the captured tanks are an untold number of T-72 and even a few T-80 main battle tanks (MBTs), and many of those vehicles will likely be refurbished and employed by the Ukrainians.
However, at least one tank that was recently captured won’t be simply sent back to the battlefield — it could even end up being shipped outside of Ukraine for study.

After Ukrainian advances in the southern Kherson region reportedly pushed Russian forces into a retreat in recent days, a Russian war reporter appeared to be left speechless by the setbacks.
“Friends, I know that you expect me to comment on the situation. However, I really don’t know what to tell you,” Roman Saponkov wrote in a Telegram post on Tuesday for his more than 61,000 followers, according to a translation. “The retreat from the north of the right bank of the Kherson region is a disaster.”
Saponkov listed several areas in the region that he said had been “abundantly watered with the blood of our soldiers.”

https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/03/middleeast/iran-protests-sharif-university-crackdown-intl/index.html

“It was the first day of school, but many students had refused to join class. Instead, they were protesting against the regime, in a nationwide movement triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old who passed away last month in a hospital after being apprehended by Iran’s morality police and sent to a “re-education center” for not abiding by the state’s hijab laws.”

“They told them that ‘if you go near the subway station, we will start shooting, go back to the university.’ And then after half of the students got back into the university, they let the others into the parking lot. And after that, they started shooting them with paint balls and taking them into custody in a very, very savage way,” he added.”

“This is far from over. We are not scared. We are outraged. We are furious. You know, these people think that we are the previous generation – that if they do this, we’re gonna just stop. We are not going to stop,” he said.

“These kids are our future,” Farid added. “We’re not going to stand for this.”
