PatD, I live the cartoons you post.

And so it begins.

Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner raised eyebrows Tuesday by suggesting there was some uncertainty about whether the presidential election would happen in November as scheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic and that he had some role in making that determination.

Hours after his remarks to Time magazinegenerated a strong reaction on social media, Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, issued a clarification, saying he was unaware of and not involved in any “discussions” about changing the date of the 2020 election. Neither Trump nor Kushner as his adviser has any legal authority to change the timing of the presidential election.
(Continues)

This IMHO was a trial balloon. As they say “To be continued…”

Jamie

Interesting article on what would be required to change the election date.

Of course if there is no elected President as of Jan 20, the Speaker of the House becomes “acting” President.

A bit more from the Kushner idiocy:

Kushner’s comments are particularly fraught because some critics, like former vice president Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, were already on high alert for an attempt by Trump to put off the election because of the coronavirus outbreak.

In Kushner’s interview with Time, he said that while it wasn’t his decision to make, he wasn’t certain he could say the election would happen on Nov. 3 if there was a second outbreak of coronavirus in the fall.

His remarks were met with concern on Tuesday.

“Kushner’s statement reveals amazing ignorance of the Constitution and law,” tweeted Bill Kristol, the neoconservative political commentator and editor at large of the Bulwark. “It reveals startling arrogance in taking for granted he gets to have some say about when the election is held. It also reveals an utter lack of understanding of his very subordinate role in our democracy. ”

Biden offered an explicit warning to a group of donors last month about the potential for the election to be moved, The Washington Post’s Annie Linskey reported.

“Mark my words, I think he is going to try to kick back the election somehow, come up with some rationale why it can’t be held,” Biden said during a virtual fundraiser.

Kushner’s noncommittal on the election date is at odds with his father-in-law’s own public position.

“The general election will happen on Nov. 3,” Trump said at a news conference last month.

But the president, like he has often said without evidence, has also attacked mail-in voting, claiming that such a practice is “RIPE for FRAUD.”

I think that provides the needed context.

pro-life only for the unborn?

now that more children are succumbing to new deadly covid19 effects, whither the gopers?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/05/01/narrow-definition-pro-life-fuels-disregard-lives-during-covid-19/

Something strange is going on with Republicans.
Take Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. He has rock-solid antiabortion bona fides — last year when Texas was on the verge of defunding Planned Parenthood, he tweeted: “In Texas, we respect the sanctity of life.” Yet last week, urging his state to reopen after being shut down because of a coronavirus stay-at-home order, he said: “There are more important things than living.”
Or consider Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.). In 2016, he praised the antiabortion March for Life for continuing despite bad weather because of how important it was for people to show that “all Americans have the right to life.” But a month ago, Johnson said that it was unwise to shutter the economy when only “between 1 and 3.4 percent of the population” who get coronavirus will die.
The dichotomy is striking. Even as some Republicans try to ban abortions during the pandemic, they are calling in increasing numbers for the sacrifice of lives to kick-start the economy.

the guardian:

Rightwing militia groups in Michigan plan to rally at the state capitol building on Thursday to protest Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home orders that she put in place to slow the deadly spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
Thursday’s demonstration will be the latest in a series of protests that started as a demonstration against the lockdown policy but are now generating fears of an eruption of political violence.
The state is currently investigating what the Michigan attorney general, Dana Nessel, characterized on Monday as “credible threats” against state Democratic politicians. Her comments followed a report of threats of violence on rightwing social media pages.
Residents posting in the Michiganders Against Excessive Quarantine Facebook page called for Whitmer’s assassination. “Wonder how long till she’s hit with a shotgun blast,” one wrote. Another said they hope Thursday’s protesters are “armed to the teeth” because “voting is too late”.
[…]
During a state senate session on Tuesday, the state senator Mallory McMorrow said the protests and threats are now “about spreading blood on the front lawn of this building”.
Leadership on both sides of the aisle have condemned the protesters’ “intimidation” tactics and are calling on law enforcement to arrest those who brandish weapons.
“These folks are thugs and their tactics are despicable,” the Republican state senate majority leader, Mike Shirkey, said during Tuesday’s session. “It is never OK to threaten the safety or life of another person, elected or otherwise, period.”
Democrats called for the state to ban guns in the state capitol building. The Republicans, however, control the legislature and are resisting that push.

Story about the Lincoln Project, airing commercial in Ohio.

Our ultimate goal is to find between one and four percent of Republican and conservative-leaning voters who we can move away from Trump,” he said.
While the super-PAC would like to push them to former Vice President Joe Biden, whom the group has endorsed, persuading GOP voters to sit out the 2020 presidential election is fine, too, Galen said.

“A vote taken away from Trump is a net negative to him.”

Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, was released Wednesday to serve his prison term under home confinement because of coronavirus fears, one of his lawyers confirmed.
Manafort had been imprisoned since June 2018 when he was indicted by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III on a charge of witness tampering while awaiting trial on bank and tax fraud charges, for which he was convicted that summer. He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruct justice related to his undisclosed lobbying for a pro-Russian politician and political party in Ukraine.
Manafort, serving a seven-year term, was released to his home in Alexandria, Va., from the minimum-security Loretto Federal Correctional Institution in central Pennsylvania. His term was set to end November 2024. His release was first reported by ABC News.
[…]
More recently, the bureau issued guidance saying it would prioritize for release those who either had served half their sentence, or just 25 percent, if they had less than 18 months remaining. Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who had been expecting his own release early this month, was prevented from departing because of those criteria. He is still expecting to get out later this month when, because of his good behavior time, he will reach the lower benchmark, people familiar with the matter said.

fun fantasy to fuss over

Bloomberg via msn:

But constitutional experts warn that chaos could ensue if both Trump and Pence were to become incapacitated by Covid-19, because the law provides little clarity on resolving such a scenario.
“It would be a real s*** show that could result in a full-scale constitutional meltdown,” says Brian Kalt, a law professor at Michigan State University and the author of Unable: The Law, Politics, and Limits of Section 4 of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. “It would immediately go to court, and they’d have to decide real quick what to do. Because not knowing who the president is even for a couple of hours could be extremely perilous for the country.”
If Trump and Pence were both unable to fulfill their duties, neither could invoke the 25th Amendment. The Constitution instructs Congress to legislate a line of succession, which was most recently updated in the Presidential Succession Act of 1947—the law that puts the speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, next in line for the presidency. The trouble, Kalt says, is that the Constitution doesn’t offer a procedure for determining a president’s “inability” to perform, giving rise to the possibility of a dispute in which Pelosi, a Democrat, declared herself acting president even as Trump and Pence (or their lawyers) declared themselves fit to serve.

pogo, thanks for alerting us to that brouhaha over IMpotus dock.  am curious if this argument on residency has legs.  it certainly will have a tax impact given NY has state income tax and FL doesn’t.  not to mention the little matter of fraud.

wapo:

Reginald Stambaugh, an attorney who represents one of Mar-a-Lago’s neighbors, said he is hopeful that the president will now permanently drop the dock proposal.
“One prevalent issue remains lingering, whether President Trump still considers Mar-a-Lago Club his residence,” Stambaugh said Tuesday. “He still can’t have it both ways. It’s either a club or a residence — not both. Florida’s voting laws apply to citizen Trump. If he resides there, he will have to close the club.”

Recommendation from my favorite “conservative” climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe

Drawing attention during a global pandemic to the plight of air and water quality, endangered species, rising sea levels, and ecological sustainability might appear ill-timed at best, or grossly tone deaf at worst.

While doctors and nurses labor under extreme conditions and away from their families, unemployment rates are skyrocketing in a frozen economy, and underappreciated workers are recognized as “essential” to our common life — though, not always compensated as such — there is no shortage of urgent crises and human needs.

Nonetheless, precisely out of concern for human flourishing, and especially on behalf of the most vulnerable members of our society, this strange and severe season of pandemic uniquely illustrates why caring for creation is as important as ever.

If human life is good, what kind of world would we like to pass on to those who survive this pandemic?

I like Abrams, but I don’t believe she has the Federal or even state wide level of experience required in a VP right now.  Sad to say, but given Biden’s age whoever is named is likely to become President if not before but then certainly by 2024.  For me that means:

Under 60 Female

Preferably black or Hispanic

Senator or Governor

As much as I love Klobuchar, that puts Harris or Grisham at the top of the stack.

RebelliousRenee

Jamie…  I agree with you….  whomever Biden picks will most likely be the 2024 Democratic candidate.  Which is why I want him to pick someone with political experience.

pogo – That CDC report is so riddled with typos, it looks like I typed it.   My point, however, was that Republicans are trying to keep information from the general public.  And, as you said, if it’s not out there, they won’t be seen as going against CDC guidelines.Wonder if the virus is mutating and that’s why kids are starting to have more severe reactions, rather than just being spreaders?
Today was the first time I’ve felt unsafe at the office.  A couple of outside vendors came in to see people.  One had no mask. Two men in my office (also without masks) stood in an enclosed space and talked for about 20 minutes.     One did have a mask, but was breathing pretty heavily.  He was make a delivery and we no longer have anyone in charge of purchasing; the person who placed the order because there’s nobody else to do it was at lunch.  He wanted me to sign his tablet.  I refused; it was visibly covered in fingerprints.  Two brought their kids to the office; one had a mask, one did not.

This is the same discussion we have had much earlier.  Abrams has not had the high level, national,  kick butt experience the others have had.  Does it make a difference in governing?  No, if she has to take over and has great people in all positions.  Almost no if she has a lot of people in important positions.  Yes if Biden needs to leave on the first day scenario.  Do the others need more experience?  I do not think so.  Their elected positions and work experience have put them in national level tests.  However, none have the WH experience Biden brings.  Plus all the women in discussion have been on the trail around the country.  Would it bother me if Biden chose Abrams, no.  Would I prefer someone else? Yes.  But, all the women in the cohort are capable, worthy of being president, and I would will bet my life on them taking over these United States.

Social distance rule in the corridors, foyer, etc. All the common rooms are off limits for the duration. Only health & wellness visitors are allowed in. We have tags outside our doors that read ‘OK’ on one side; a designated ‘ranger’ goes through every a.m. to see that everyone has turned the tag to OK. If not we have a protocol to follow.
I don’t think that many of us really care about C19 for ourselves, but we don’t want to endanger our friends. Also, many are old enough to remember a sense of community that was pervasive before cheap automobiles and freeways.
