for sturge and other franken friends, a couple of days ago from cbs:
Sarah Silverman ……. The “I Love You, America” host said, “I think that there are people who were caught and there were people who were not caught, but the important thing is that they are forever changed. And if that’s the case, I don’t see any reason why they can’t continue being artists. Now, whether they’re popular artists or not is up to the audience. I have compassion.”
Silverman also differentiated between people who own up to their mistakes and people who do not, saying, “There are people that just deny everything they’re accused of and they continue to be the politicians or the filmmakers that they are. And there are people that come and say, ‘I’m guilty of these things, and I’m wrong, and I want to be changed from this.’ And yet those are the ones that kind of are excommunicated forever. He’s my brother, so it’s hard. I may not have a very clear perspective on it, but I’m trying to.”
The comedian was even more defensive of former Sen. Al Franken, who resigned following several women’s accusations and a photo of him grabbing at a broadcaster Leeann Tweeden‘s chest in what he said was a joking way. Silverman said, “He has no sexuality. I believe in my heart of heart of hearts he never copped a feel. The sketch, the whole Leeann Tweeden sketch, is online. You can see it for yourself. It’s not funny, but it’s innocuous.” She continued, “I’m so sad that he got bullied into resigning, because all he loved in this world was being a senator and representing the people of Minnesota. I’ve never met a more pure person. On the show, you saw him kiss me on the lips. There is nothing sexual about it. He’s a Jewish grandpa.”

Jamie – my great-uncle James Bennett, seaman on the USS Buenaventura, was killed when the ship was sunk by a German submarine torpedo on September 14, 1918.  His body was never recovered.  Two other great-uncles were killed in WWII in the Pacific theater.  Their bodies were never recovered.

I am naming my new-to-me boat MV Buena Ventura.  The Navy has her name spelled both ways.  I am thinking that the chief of BV, when she was commissioned sent a seaman out on a bosun’s chair to paint the name on her and he was illiterate. Told “Buena Ventura” he goes with “Buenaventura”.

Jace…  nice choice!

Pogo…  game 7 tonight.  Good luck to both teams.  I just hope it’s a good competitive basketball game…  so far…  the home team dominates…   kinda sucky basketball.

Jace’s music and Jamie’s WWI registration got me back into my ancestry.com files on this rainy day. Just came across this photo of my 2d great grandfather Joseph James Craig who lived to 83yo, died in 1898. For those into their genealogy share your ancestors with us.

Here’s one of the more interesting ladies.  Elizabeth Patterson was born in 1813 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  She married Mungo Bisset and as was common at the time had 12 children some of whom had the same names because their previous sibling didn’t survive infancy.  In 1857 Elizabeth & Mungo left behind four adult children and stepped on board the Forest Monarch with three younger children and the one Elizabeth was carrying internally.  Little John arrived in Emu Bay Tasmania having rushed the arrival prior to the ship docking.

They settled in Winyard, Tasmania, Australia for many years of farming as upstanding citizens.  There are lots of newspaper articles about family and business including a major fire that destroyed the original home. Then at the end a sad series involving a buggy accident and the injury of Mungo and Elizabeth that eventually led to their deaths in 1892.

Courtesy of these two and their descendants, I’m probably related to a large percentage of the folks down under.  So if you run into a Bisset, Lowery, Toplis, Cross, Spinks or Bryant while wandering the Southern hemisphere, say “Hi!” for me.

Does trump know that his photo op summit with kim is in the hands of an Obama pick?

Sung Kim, Obama’s guy, sent to N.Korea for summit prep.

From Wapo
A team of U.S. officials crossed into North Korea on Sunday for talks to prepare for a summit between President Trump and Kim Jong Un, as both sides press ahead with arrangements despite the question marks hanging over the meeting.
Sung Kim, a former U.S. ambassador to South Korea and former nuclear negotiator with the North, has been called in from his post as envoy to the Philippines to lead the preparations, according to a person familiar with the arrangements.
He crossed the line that separates the two Koreas to meet with Choe Son Hui, the North Korean vice foreign minister, who said last week that Pyongyang was “reconsidering” the talks. Sung Kim and Choe know each other well — both were part of their respective delegations that negotiated the 2005 denuclearization agreement through the six-party framework.
As for Sung (from the above wiki link)?
On June 24, 2011, President Obama nominated Kim to be the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.[5] However, Kim’s nomination stalled after U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl placed a hold[6]on Kim’s nomination over concerns not with Kim but with U.S. policy toward North Korea. On October 13, 2011 Kyl lifted his hold on Kim’s nomination and the Senate confirmed Kim by unanimous consent.[7][8]
On May 19, 2016, U.S. President Obama nominated Kim to replace Philip Goldberg as the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines.[11] He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 28, 2016 and was sworn in by Secretary of State John Kerry at the Department of State on Thursday, November 3, 2016.[12] Kim arrived in Manila on December 3, a month after he was sworn in,[13] and presented his credentials to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on December 6.

One evening while at work in Vietnam a doctor poked his head into our tent and asked if I spoke French. I said it’s been a while, but yes. He asked if I could help him with a patient where he was volunteering. I grabbed my rifle and we climbed into his jeep.

He drove to a civilian hospital staffed by French-trained Vietnamese nuns. They led us to his patient, an emaciated woman in her 20s, stripped of clothing who had obviously given birth a short while earlier. There was only one thing for me to ask, “Ma sœur, est-ce que le bébé est mort?” They nodded yes and I passed that tidbit to the doc. My job was done.

BB, MV Buena Ventura. Good name for a boat.

PatD – perfect.  The heat and humidity was like being in Cuba.  I went down to power wash my boats, first stop the York River.  My sailboat, in the salon was a little over 100°F.  Outside was mid 90’s with humidity to match.  Poor little Gale was not doing well.  I got her below and put my little window air conditioner in the companionway and after an hour the temperature was down to 90°F.  I had been working on deck and was overheated too.  I went to the cooler and pulled a couple of PBR off the ice and went below to sit with Gale and cool off.
This morning I did a few things then got the power washer out of the truck bed.  Hooked it up, and I am pouring sweat at 9:30 am.  Turn on the water and power.  Pull back on the handle trigger.  Nothing but a small stream of water.  The power washer had finally given up after eight years of work.

So it was clean up the boat, do  a few chores, close down the sailboat and head North to the Potomac and BV (Buena Ventura, easier to use BV).
That started out not well either. As we arrived, so did more humidity and heat to the locale.  It followed us.  A little work with a marina hand to shift BV closer to the finger pier and Gale boards BV with me.  I am really pouring out sweat again, and Gale is looking rough from the heat and humidity.  I go below to the salon and open hatches and turn on a fan, hoping the breeze will do something, anything.  Gale is not happy.  I start storing the load of stuff I brought below.  It is now 86°F in the galley.  At least Gale learned to lay on the galley floor which is the coolest place in the boat.  I think the water temperature is around 72°F, which is what the sole would be.

I did a few more things on board, marking and removing the canvas and windows (Eisenglass) so she looks less like a derelict (even without a power washing).  It was not a good thing to make Gale so miserable, so I cut our visit short by a day and headed back to Annapolis.  Where we arrived in a heavy rain and thunderstorm.  At least it was in the 80’s.

Here’s a pleasant link for you

What do you need to get the a/c to a point where you and Gale won’t stroke-out? Can the harbor water augment the condenser?

Flatus – cool. I did not know the USN commissioned another vessel in the same name as Buena Ventura.

Right now I am trying to find where the sea cocks are for the A/C seawater pumps are.  She is a big girl and I am still trying to find where things are on her.  I put out a call for help on one of the international websites for help.  Eventually I will find someone willing to talk.
