ny times: Trump Spoke to Witnesses About Matters They Discussed With Special Counsel WASHINGTON — The special counsel in the Russia investigation has learned of two conversations in recent months in which President Trump asked key witnesses about matters they discussed with investigators, according to three people familiar with the encounters. In one episode, the president told an aide that the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, should issue a statement denying a New York Times article in January. The article said Mr. McGahn told investigators that the president once asked him to fire the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III. Mr. McGahn never released a statement and later had to remind the president that he had indeed asked Mr. McGahn to see that Mr. Mueller was dismissed, the people said. In the other episode, Mr. Trump asked his former chief of staff, Reince Priebus, how his interview had gone with the special counsel’s investigators and whether they had been “nice,” according to two people familiar with the discussion. The episodes demonstrate that even as the special counsel investigation appears to be intensifying, the president has ignored his lawyers’ advice to avoid doing anything publicly or privately that could create the appearance of interfering with it. […] Legal experts said Mr. Trump’s contact with the men most likely did not rise to the level of witness tampering. But witnesses and lawyers who learned about the conversations viewed them as potentially a problem and shared them with Mr. Mueller. In… Read more »

pogo & x-r,  sooo what’s the big deal of ex parte-ing the judge/arbitor or not notifying the other side to an arbitration when  tampering with witnesses seems to be his normal m.o. ?

and how can a guy get his story (s) straight unless he knows which one (s) was told to the investigators? wouldn’t want him to lie, would you?     🙂

Maybe the spy & his daughter in the UK who were poisoned by Russkies were just a warning to Trumpsky & Comrades to keep quiet.  No hush money needed.

Of course, you can never believe a Russkie, nor will they ever let anything go. They have long memories and hate loose ends as much as loose lips.

Patd, my knowledge of arbitration is extremely limited. There are rules associated with arbitration that the American Arbitration Association has established as well as a number of other organizations that provide arbitration procedures but I don’t really know what the rules applicable to the SFB matters are.

The JAMS rules I linked require notice to the adverse party and the opportunity to be heard before an emergency order issues. Kinda like due process. I didn’t see in the agreement or the side letter in reference to the organization whose rules would be utilized in the event of an arbitration.

Margaret Truman may have been the most normal Presidential child probably because Bess wore the pants in that family.

Should the current First Lady take her son & leave this could illicit the only bipartisan support given in this administration. The President’s joke about “Who would leave first?” & mentioning his wife’s name may be less humor & more foreshadowing. However I can’t imagine the emotional abuse she has & would receive from this man if she did leave. Her love for her son seems genuine. I wish Mother & son well.

To any who would make the point she made the decision to marry this guy, it doesn’t excuse abuse in any form towards any woman, whether rich or poor. Adultery is abuse & disrespect of the highest quarter towards a spouse. Will say I would have fully supported Hillary Rodham if she had dumped her philandering a-hole of a spouse after the Lewinsky affair. Adultery & lying go hand in hand. If you lose trust in the one you love, that love has been compromised. Forgiveness is dandy but the cloud of suspicion will never disappear. Cheating is usually not a one time offense.

fortune: For Brands Celebrating International Women’s Day 2018, Inspirational Messages Aren’t Enough Anymore International Women’s Day on Thursday is intended to celebrate women’s cultural and economic achievements and call for more gender parity. But as the calendar turns to March 8, it’s also time for the corporate pile-on of feel-good ads and product rollouts as brands rush to chime in on the pro-woman conversation.   Mattel on Tuesday unveiled 17 new “role model” Barbies for the occasion, honoring female icons such as Amelia Earhart and NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson. Modern-day figures like Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim also got their own lookalike dolls.   During the Oscars on Sunday, Nike aired a new ad starring Serena Williams that commemorated International Women’s Day. In the commercial, the tennis star says she’s been criticized as not “the right kind of woman,” but has learned that “there’s no wrong way to be a woman.” Uber released a video in Asian markets that seeks to disprove myths about female drivers there, and Facebook has designed IWD-themed cards, photo frames, and backgrounds to adorn text posts by users on mobile devices.   In a wackier stunt, a California McDonald’s location is turning its trademark golden arches upside-down so what is normally an M becomes a W for women.   The history of International Women’s Day stretches back more than a century, but supporting it in 2018 may feel especially urgent for brands, as it’s the first IWD since the #MeToo… Read more »

This International Women’s Day, UN Women celebrates the rural and urban activists who have transformed the lives of women around the world. From grassroots campaigns to global movements, women’s activism over the decades has paved the way for women’s rights and a more equal future.

On March 8, join UN Women to reflect on progress made, to stand up for change, and to celebrate the ordinary and extraordinary women who have changed the world through their words and actions. The time is now.

The addition of Barron’s grandparents add an interesting element to the equation. If genuine mutual fondness develops between them and the boy, everybody’s lives will be enriched. I have little doubt that SFB would be content in having the four of them vanish to the City under the (probably accurate) guise of furthering his son’s education.

Nobody deserves a life so stressful as Melania’s must be.

kgc, thanks for correcting me. I was just making a joke… but I did find this on the little blue pills: from edrugstore: The ‘little blue pill’ is the most popular drug for erection issues but it can be costly. Each pill runs about $10 each depending on where it’s purchased, so for many seniors it would nice if the medication was covered by Medicare or Medicaid.  The kicker is the federal government made a rule in 2007 that keeps loss of erections sexual dysfunction drugs from being covered.  While that rule is typically enforced, a new study shows some patients did get the government to chip in for their Viagra. In a government study more than $3 million dollars went towards the purchases of Viagra. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said the slip ups were not intentional and they will look into recovering their money through insurance companies.   CMS Administrator Donald Berwick, MD, said CMS will determine whether it’s “appropriate and cost effective” to reopen final payment decisions for 2007 and 2008 in order to “recover the costs of claims for drugs used for the treatment of sexual or erection problems paid in those years.”   Medicare and Medicaid will cover drugs like Viagra or Cialis if it is prescribed by a doctor for another reason other than sexual problems. For example, Viagra would be covered if it were prescribed for pulmonary hypertension, a heart condition that can be improved with Viagra. The treatment is only covered if the FDA has approved the… Read more »

kgc, how do you feel about the “Nordic Model” – prosecuting johns, not prostitues?

The Nordic Model approach to prostitution (sometimes also known as the Sex Buyer Law, or the Swedish, Abolitionist, or Equality Model) decriminalises all those who are prostituted, provides support services to help them exit, and makes buying people for sex a criminal offence, in order to reduce the demand that drives sex trafficking. This approach has now been adopted in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Canada, France, and most recently, Ireland.

IMHO, considering what may be the issue before us, I would happily see the john in the wh prosecuted.

From the Cosmopolitan article I linked up above:
“…As a cover shot, it’s glaringly out of touch with the populist campaign that just put Melania in the White House — she’s twirling diamond jewelry with a fork and spoon like it’s spaghetti. Like sparkly, would-probably-chip-your-teeth-if-you-ate-it spaghetti. And as The Guardian notes, people are not happy about it.
But here’s the real deal — this photo, which in context seems pretty out-of-touch and inappropriate, wasn’t even taken for Vanity Fair. It wasn’t even taken for GQ, where it was published in 2016 accompanying an interview with Melania. According to Trunk Archive, the syndication photo agency where this shot is stored, the photo was part of a shoot Melania did for Philadelphia Style back in 2011 to promote her QVC jewelry collection….”

They should use the “Nordic model,” here.  North TX has one of the highest rates of human trafficking in the country.  It is disgusting.  They caught one group of scumbag luring teens into their sex business.  One mother found her daughter’s whereabouts by a cellphone ping and wondered why she would be in a motel in Ft. Worth.  There was an article in the paper years ago about Asian barely-legal being lured by the promise of legit work, flown to Mexico, smuggled over the border, and then ending up forced into the sex trade.   The more bad behavior is outed and punished, the better.

If trump weren’t such a petty sociopath, the tale of his rise and fall might have been the stuff of grand tragedy.

The trumpery of the man, his family, his endless campaign, and his administration remind me somewhat of the film Hatter’s Castle, starring Robert Newton in a brilliantly restrained performance*. The hatter comes to believe that he is descended from heroic nobility.

* Seeing Hatter’s Castle, you wouldn’t believe that he was the same actor who ate up all the scenery & the very ocean as Long John Silver.

nbc news:

Trump orders new tariffs, with exemptions for Mexico and Canada
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Thursday approved new steel and aluminum tariffs, capping off a week’s worth of controversy over his plans to impose the trade penalties.

“Today, I’m defending America’s national security by placing tariffs on foreign imports of steel,” Trump said in the White House Roosevelt Room, flanked by steel and aluminum workers, shortly before he signed proclamations imposing the tariffs. “You don’t have steel, you don’t have a country.”

The tariffs — 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum — will take effect March 23, a senior administration official told reporters.

Mexico and Canada will receive immediate exemptions from the tariffs in the context of the ongoing NAFTA renegotiation talks, Trump said. There has been no specific timeline laid out by the administration for how long those exceptions might last.

“I have a feeling we’ll make a deal on NAFTA,” Trump said. If that happens, “there won’t be any tariffs” on Canada or Mexico.
As far as other countries that might seek exemptions, Trump said that in the coming weeks “we’ll see whose treating us fairly and whose not treating us fairly.”

Earlier, the senior administration official said that “all countries will be welcome to discuss” other possible ways to ease the tariffs.

On Thursday morning, Trump told reporters as he wrapped up a Cabinet meeting that the policy toward Australia would be “flexible.”

also nbc news:

European Commission for Trade Cecilia Malmström said Wednesday that the group had prepared an initial list of U.S. goods that will see higher tariffs in Europe if the White House imposes Trump’s proposed penalty of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum.
“Certain types of bourbon are indeed on the list, as are other items such as peanut butter and cranberries, orange juice, etc.,” said Malmström. The full list will be published “very soon,” she said.

Some had hoped that free trade voices inside the White House would prevail. But with top economic adviser Gary Cohn out, so too are hopes of moderation.

“This is basically a stupid process, the fact that we have to do this. But we have to do it,” EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said last Friday. “We can also do stupid.” He also said there could be new taxes on Harley-Davidson, Levi’s, and bourbon.
