jace, thank you so much. here just for you, a sunday school lesson on above from singer sticky notes:
“Nel cor più non mi sento”
Ah, the 24 Italian Songs and Arias! They form the bedrock of our classical vocal study.
But, what are they all about? Are they dusty tomes from history which never make it into the “real world.” Hardly! Let’s dive into these gems by looking on YouTube. Today’s entry is one of my favorites: “Nel cor più non mi sento.”
This charming little ditty about vexation in love (…but not too serious) has a long and illustrious history for a piece so minute and seemingly casual. Beethoven wrote a series of piano variations based on this song. This Italian aria is very frequently performed ornamented and has a knack for showing up all sorts of places. Here are the “Nel cor più non mi sento” lyrics and “Nel cor più non mi sent” translation:
*********************
Nel cor più non mi sento In my heart I no longer feel
Brillar la gioventù; the brilliance of youth;
Cagion del mio tormento, the cause of my torment,
Amor, sei colpa tu. Love, it’s your fault!
mi pizzichi, mi stuzzichi, You sting me, you poke me,
mi pungichi, mi mastichi; you pinch me, you bite me.
Che cosa è questo, ahimè? What thing is this, alas?
Pietà, pietà, pietà! Pity, pity, pity!
Amore è un certo che, Love is that certain something
Che disperar mi fa! that makes me despair!
**************************
Our first performance is a very straightforward rendition by the Luciano Pavarotti (for which they kindly provide simultaneous English translation). I think you’ll like Pavarotti’s unaffected sincerity and joie de vivre.

Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin), Kellyanne Conway (Kate McKinnon), Mike Pence (Beck Bennett), Eric Trump (Alex Moffat), Donald Trump Jr. (Mikey Day), Sarah Huckabee Sanders (Aidy Bryant), Melania Trump (Cecily Strong) and Ivanka Trump (Scarlett Johansson) perform “Hallelujah.”
Jace… I love the pi-ano!
Hey Papa Crawford…. Happy 90th!
A big thank you to Jace for his weekly contributions to ease the slings and arrows of a week of politics.
Thank you to Patd for both the sublime & the ridiculous.
A truly happy 90th to Papa Crawford. May the years continue to treat you well.
The stings, pinches, pokes, and bites of love remind me of Matt Dennis song: Everything Happens To Me. I really like this Jazz version by Bill Evans.
I make a date for golf, and you can bet your life it rains.
I try to give a party, and the guy upstairs complains.
I guess I’ll go through life, just catching colds and missing trains.
Everything happens to me.
I never miss a thing. I’ve had the measles and the mumps.
And every time I play an ace, my partner always trumps.
I guess I’m just a fool, who never looks before he jumps.
Everything happens to me.
At first, my heart thought you could break this jinx for me.
That love would turn the trick to end despair.
But now I just can’t fool this head that thinks for me.
I’ve mortgaged all my castles in the air.
I’ve telegraphed and phoned and sent an air mail special too. Your answer was goodbye and there was even postage due. I fell in love just once, and then it had to be with you. Everything happens to me.

Patd,
Thanks for the historical perspective. Cheryl and I have taught ‘ Nel cor to a number of students over the years, usually in preparation for contests or auditions. Never had one quite like Pavarotti however.?
The Italian songs are some of the most singable and approachable for young singers and excellent for vowel formation and voice placement. Not to mention that they are often delightful tunes.
Happy birthday Mr. Crawford! Ninety is indeed a milestone. Congrats! Celebrate ?
Jamie,
Thanks for the shout out. In the world of Trump one must seek diversions. I think that horse racing and music are two excellent choices.?
Jace……..and beer…..don’t forget the beer…….
Sturgeone,
Nice save.How could I have forgotten the ? ?
Me bad – I forgot that the third Saturday of May is World Whiskey Day. I need to be a little more vigilant in my marking the calendar of these events.
Very little is being made of Reince Preibus returning to the U.S. instead of continuing with the traveling circus troupe. My guess is he has a letter from a grand jury which wants him in a hot seat.
BB
This explains why Makers Mark sponsored the Preakness since the two events occur together every year.
Jamie – sounds logical to me. But watch the future, many of Maryland’s distillers are putting out good stuff. It is fun trying the new output as soon as it matures. The UnderArmor guy is building a distillery and may take over advertising.

Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite and furthermore, always carry a small snake.

bb, people in the sweats biz oughta be making saki which tastes to me about the same as old socks and gym shoes smell. good bourbon smells sweeter, crisper and goes down without an aftertaste of a well used locker room.
They say some of my stars drink whiskey, but I have found that the ones who drink milkshakes don’t win many ball games.

Friend once came by the card game with a bottle of Apple Flavored Crown Royal…..we nevertheless became quite toasted but there’s been about four fingers of it on top of the refrigerator for well over a year…..

crooks&liars Why Is Reince Priebus Coming Home Early?
It appeared that there wasn’t anybody minding the store when Air Force One went wheels up en route to the Middle East. All the big name advisors were on board, from Tillerson, to Bannon, to Kushner. But late last night–only 24 hours into the tour–The New York Times journalist Maggie Haberman tweeted that someone was cutting his trip short: [shows tweets here]
To date, no other media outlet has confirmed this news. And Priebus was visible during Trump’s speech this morning in Saudi Arabia, so clearly he didn’t hightail it out of there after the rather horrifying view of Trump, Tillerson and Ross dancing with swords.
Priebus has been one of Trump’s staff that was rumored to be on the way out, due to Trump’s petulance over increasingly negative coverage of his own self-induced chaos.
Could Priebus be leaving because Trump has lashed out and fired him?
Could he be going home early to lawyer up?
To get an early start on shredding incriminating documents?
At this point, we don’t know. But history has shown that with the Trump administration, where’s there smoke, there’s inevitably a raging dumpster fire.
World Whiskey Day!?ByGod some folks have their priorities in order!?
Tex Ritter sings “Rye Whiskey” in “Song of the Gringo” (1936).
“I have taken more from drink than drink has taken from me.”
Attributed to Winston Churchill.
“Son, never trust a man who doesn’t drink because he’s probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They’re the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They’re usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they’re a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can’t trust a man who’s afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It’s damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he’s heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.”

Here is the next important event, World Gin Day. The second Saturday in June.
I don’t want to leave the impression that I have any issue with anyone not drinking. Having to fight an addiction is tough, I quit smoking 9/21/2004 and still addicted even though I have not smoked since then.
Last time I recall being in Maryland was for schooling at Aberdeen Proving Ground. I’d surely return for some of that Maryland-made Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
Over in Korea on my first trip, our outfit supported an orphanage run by a priest who had been there for decades–even during the Japanese occupation. Two or three places on our Christmas shopping list for the desperately poor place was, “Scotch for Father Murphy.” Craig, what does Father Crawford have on his list beyond all our best wishe? And faith that Jace’s font of fine music shan’t run dry?
Time for a tittle of Brandy
That ties Gin to the Belmont.
Blue Bronc,
Beware of gin, for it was gin what done the ol’ girl in.?
“Gin makes you sin” , quote from former roommate. I just ignore moralistic things like that while sipping my martinis’.
sj – ??? (((hugs)))
Of note, the potus-floatass is “exhausted”, per potus press person. He has been on this trip for two days. Seven more of these on the itinerary. Yeah. Fat ass is “exhausted”. Being president is hard work. Will he quit? Maybe when his attorney, not one of his lackeys, informs him of what he is facing.
BB, give ’em a break. 7-miles up is hard on an older person so out of shape as he is.
Dad appreciates your birthday wishes. Pictured here are some of my college friends who were fans of his (and Mom) came over to celebrate. (Don’t be alarmed by his RNC shirt, it’s a joke.)
Craig,
Looks like a grand time. Enjoy!
Nice people enjoying each other and the place, while we still have Florida. Wish I were there.
It’s bad enough that there’s no Chef, Tiptoe, Gator Lady, Bethyboo, View, Trader, Horsedooty, CBob, or B39 around anymore. I couldn’t lose my daily dose SJNY.
Howdya pronounce SJNY anywayz ?
prince rebus had to come home when he discovered that in Arabia all the liquor stores were DTs and all the bars were mirages. And, it was Whiskey Day !
