In the defense electronics industry, the final check to see if a new system is properly designed is called a “drop check.” Electronic equipment manufactured for the military is routinely subjected to rough conditions that civilian equipment rarely has to endure. So …. engineers and technicians at the corporation where I worked would take a new prototype device out to the loading dock at the back of the building and carefully measure a height of two meters. Then one of the technicians would DROP the device onto the concrete surface below. If the equipment still functioned, then the design was OK. Most of the equipment we produced was in the form of rectangular “boxes” and it had to be repeatedly dropped on all 8 corners. These tests had to be witnessed by a US government inspector.
Our Democratic Republic is now being subjected to a “drop check.” The question is, will it still function after Trump’s abuse?

Multiple outlets report the speech is expected to revisit claims about the 2020 election, discuss voting systems, and possibly unveil intelligence that the White House says relates to foreign election interference. BIDDEFORD, Maine — The apartment building where Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero lived with his family is much quieter than it was a week ago.
The three-story structure at 53 Pool St. is home to a large number of immigrant families, according to residents and neighbors. Kids often play in the sidewalk outside, residents work on cars in the parking lot, and people go in and out of the building as they head to work and come back home again.
Early Monday morning, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Guerrero, a 26-year-old immigrant from Colombia, just feet from the building’s front door. He was not the intended target of an arrest warrant, federal officials later confirmed.
Now, a sense of fear has paralyzed many living there, residents said.
“There’s a lot of families, a lot of young kids in that apartment (building). It’s usually very noisy,” said Isaac Black, who lives in a unit beneath the Guerrero family. “You can always smell something cooking. They all cook so much food.”
“But now you can’t hear anything. You can’t smell anything,” Black said. “It’s too quiet.”
Guerrero’s killing has sent shock waves across the world. But its impact has been especially pronounced among southern Maine’s immigrant communities, which were already on edge in the wake of an immigration enforcement surge across the state earlier this year that resulted in more than 200 people being detained.
As news reporters and television camera crews from across the country descended on Guerrero’s neighborhood, the usual bustle of residents going about their daily lives has ground almost to a halt.
“Families, individuals, communities, went sheltering in place,” said Mufalo Chitam, executive director of the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition. “Everybody in that family, in that neighborhood, who is an immigrant, is really fearing for their lives.”
“He was going to work. He just left his house. And he got shot,” she added.
The 77 Convenience Store is just a few blocks from Guerrero’s apartment. Its shelves are stocked with a wide array of groceries, snacks and other goods from myriad cultures. Many immigrants who live nearby do their shopping at the store, its owner said.
.But since the shooting on Monday, business has been much, much slower.
“It’s usually 75 people in here each day. We went down to a half, maybe more,” said the shop’s owner, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic who has lived in Maine more than 20 years. He asked not to be named out of fear of ICE retaliation.
“People are scared,” he said. “It’s a quiet neighborhood. This (kind of) thing doesn’t happen here.”
Guerrero had been in the store about a week ago, the man said. He often came in with his partner and 3-year-old daughter.
“Everybody (is) coming here looking for a different life. Something better,” he said. “But now it feels different. It’s just crazy that this happened here.”
When ICE agents came to Maine in January, many immigrants began considering whether to leave the state — and the country — altogether. Some ended up deciding to move. Others stayed and felt a lingering sense of unease, which has been exacerbated by Guerrero’s killing.
MB, an Angolan immigrant who asked to be referred to only by his initials out of fear of ICE retribution, moved to southern Maine in 2018. He sought asylum from political persecution in his home country after speaking out against the government there.
He hoped that America — and Maine — would be safe. But January’s enforcement action and Monday’s killing have shattered the sense of security MB sought here. Now he’s contemplating whether to leave.
MB said he only leaves the house to go to work and occasionally grocery shop. He tries to drive as cautiously as possible, always signaling to avoid being pulled over. He rarely rides in the car with his wife. If they’re both taken at the same time, he doesn’t know who would look after their four children.
“You never know if you’re going to come back home,” MB said.
He has friends in other states who’ve said that there’s minimal ICE presence near them. Immigration enforcement agents have been in MB’s neighborhood, and his children became even more afraid after the shooting on Monday.
“Why is it that everywhere we go, we have to go through the same experience?” he recalled his daughter asking. “We have to hide from people.”

Republican supporters, frequently including Collins, have enabled all this. Collins is a recipient of millions of dollars in donations from private equity companies, supported the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, which then overturned a woman’s right to choose, and voted for most of Trump’s nominees for his Cabinet and agencies, many of whom I believe are corrupt and incompetent, who have carried out his cruel policies.
I do not believe establishment Democrats have effectively challenged the shift of wealth from most of us to the oligarchs, billionaires, and corporate elite. But progressives like Democratic Socialists of America around the country have gained support by addressing the real causes of problems most of us face and promoting necessary solutions such as Medicare for All.

In yesterday’s thread I posted instructions on how to load the AP that will allow you to watch the local TV station that is broadcasting this debate, which will certainly have an impact on who gets chosen to go up against Susan Collins.
I imagine that every politically active Democratic voter in Maine will be watching this debate. This is the most important political crisis in Maine since Collins was first elected in 1996.
She was elected by a fluke. In 1996 the Democratic Senate nominee was leading the polls, but then a former Democratic governor jumped into the race as an “independent.” (Maine loves independents. Angus King is just one example.)
The “spoiler” Democrat, whose name I won’t mention, served two terms as a Governor but, as Maine has a two-term limit, he left that office and went down to Washington DC to become a “lobbyist.” He was unsuccessful in this enterprise, so he came back to Maine, ran for Senate as an independent, and split the vote, mostly taking votes away from the Democratic nominee, who was ahead of Collins in the polls.
And THAT is how she got elected. By a plurality, not a majority.
Maine is full of quirky individualists. Our politicians are no different. You never know what they are going to do.
Party discipline is non-existent. That is true of both major parties.
But the Maine Republicans are bat-shit crazy. (In my humble opinion.)😁 If you think Collins is bad, you should see the clown car that is the GOP contingent in our state legislature.

“Then he tried to say that it was a justified shooting because the guy tried to hit him with his car,” said the former wife of David Michael Brouillette.
According to the Press Herald, which reviewed a screenshot of incoming calls to Ashley Brouillette, she said that she’d seen video footage of the shooting and told her ex-husband that “nowhere in there does it show that this man charged at you with a car.”
Common Dreams has not independently verified Ashley Brouillette’s claims—which also included that he was abusive during their relationship; she previously reported concerns about the US Army veteran’s mental health to his superiors in the military; and she and her family have received threats since reports of her ex’s involvement in the shooting began to spread online.
The US Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, has refused to name any involved agents, and David Brouillette—a Manchester-based 37-year-old who is also a licensed real estate agent and has held various law enforcement and public safety jobs in the state—did not respond to the Press Herald’s multiple requests for comment.

Ken Paxton’s many real estate holdings become an issue in Texas Senate race
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s long list of scandals has caused unease among some Senate Republicans.
Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, for example, said in May that Paxton “could reasonably be indicted for a felony.”
Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina added, “To call Paxton ethically challenged is to call Jeffrey Dahmer suffering from an eating disorder.”
Last week, ProPublica and The Texas Tribune reported that Paxton appears to have used an address where he did not live “while voting in six elections in the past two years.” (A spokesperson for the Republican called the story “a baseless, lie-filled tabloid story” but offered nothing of substance to challenge its accuracy.)
This dovetailed with related questions about why the state attorney general and his now-estranged wife declared three separate homes as their primary residence in mortgage documents, a practice his party has, in other situations, characterized as an outrageous abuse.
Just how many homes does Paxton own?
His 2026 opponent, Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, recently sat down with MS NOW’s Jen Psaki and offered an answer: “Since taking office, Ken Paxton has now become a multimillionaire, while our pay has remained stagnant for years, for decades. He now owns 11 homes, while most Texans can’t afford one,” he said.
Talarico has said this before — as Texans probably know, it’s become a standard line in his stump speech — but it got me wondering: Is that correct?
According to publicly available documents, including financial disclosure filings, the answer is yes. Paxton, either in his personal capacity or through the trust that oversees his assets, owns five homes in Texas, three in Florida, two in Utah and one in Oklahoma. (Those same publicly available materials also point to a lot in Hawaii, although there does not appear to be any structure on the property.)
The Wall Street Journal similarly reported last fall, “The Paxtons now own at least 11 residential properties around the U.S. with an assessed value of $7.5 million.“

It came as Donald Trump ramps up his efforts to label his political opponents, and a rising number of politicians identified with the Democratic Socialists of America as “communists”.
The officials did not mention episodes of rightwing attacks, such as the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill.

The recall included 3,080 cases of Pillsbury Bread Rolls “Hard Roll Dough,” each containing 180 rolls, for a total of 554,400 rolls, and 1,260 cases of Pillsbury Bread Rolls “Kaiser Roll Dough,” each containing 144 rolls, for a total of 181,440 rolls. The notice says the bread rolls were recalled due to “potential foreign material (glass).”
General Mills distributed the cases of frozen bread rolls in Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.
Based on a description on General Mills’ website, the bread rolls are marketed to businesses rather than to individual consumers.

My ranking: Maine Senate Candidates Debate (Top four only)
Jackson #1 & Shah #2″ I thought these two made the best impression. Jackson gets #1 because he kept hammering away at how the increasing economic inequality was the root of all evil in the Trump administration. Shah was articulate but he kept going back to healthcare. Jackson argued that the problem was bigger than health care. Jackson kept talking about billionaires. That works with Mainers. Shah’s answers were every good, very detailed, very articulate. I’m just not sure how the average Maine voter would react to this on a gut level. Maine is the poorest state in New England, and has been called “the Appalachia of New England.” It is a WORKING CLASS state, much more so than Massachusetts where I grew up. Jackson speaks to the working class: he sees the world the way they do, he speaks their language. At least that was my impression and I come from the working class. (Boston Irish.)
That being said, Shah has a lot of support. But if the Platner people line up behind Jackson, he will win the nomination. I could be wrong but that’s my reading of the situation. The Platner people are angry, not that he was forced out, but that they were accused to trying to influence his replacement. Well, of course they did. I would. It’s called politics.
Bellows #3: She was OK but she didn’t answer with specifics…she was vague in many answers. Sometimes she appeared to be unprepared to answer what should have been obvious questions. Collins could out-debate her.

If you watch a tape of Trump’s speech, notice that Trump’s left arm keeps twitching and at the same time his body shifts slightly back on the left side. (His left side, your right side.)
I’m not a doctor but that looks like a neurological symptom. His brain is sending spurious signals to his muscles. I think the correct medical term is “involuntary spasms.”
