  3. Jack, I take that back about today’s world being different from the world of 1893 when Dvořák composed New World.
According to AI copilot1893 was marked by political change, economic turmoil, cultural milestones, and notable disasters in the United States.
and The Panic of 1893, beginning on May 5, triggered a severe economic depression, affecting banks, railroads, and businesses nationwide
This financial crisis led to widespread unemployment and political upheaval,…

  5. today in philly from the editorial board of the Philadelphia Inquirer
The Case for Impeachment | Opinion
A series of essays illuminating how Donald Trump — an out-of-control president focused on his own profiteering while trampling the rule of law — is a clear and present danger to the republic.

according to Alternet via MSN Major newspaper demands Trump’s impeachment in blistering editorial
Many Democratic advisors discourage talk of a likely incoming Democratic Congress pursuing the prospect Impeaching President Donald Trump because of a subservient Republican Party ready to protect the president regardless of evidence. Nevertheless, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Editorial Board says the issue must be addressed because the president’s crimes are rending the U.S. laws upon which the nation relies.
The rule of law in in jeopardy, said Barbara McQuade, a professor of practice at the University of Michigan Law School and a former U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan“[Trump’s] scowling face appears on a banner on the building that houses the U.S. Department of Justice. In that same building, Trump declared himself America’s ‘chief law enforcement officer,’ a shocking departure from chief executives in the post-Watergate era,” writes McQuade, speaking for the board. “Ignoring norms and policies, Trump and his appointees at the Justice Department have injected strongman tactics into the administration of the law. Attorney General Todd Blanche has pointed to language in the Constitution that vests the executive power in a president of the United States to argue that Trump has the authority to direct all executive branch agencies, including the Department of Justice. But Blanche overlooks another provision of Article II, which requires the president to ‘take care’ that the laws be executed ‘faithfully.’”
Instead, McQuade says “we have seen Trump and his cronies use the DOJ to reward his allies and punish his enemies.”
“In Trump’s first month back in office, he granted pardons to more than 1,500 defendants who were convicted of crimes relating to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. That was followed by the dismissal of bribery charges against then-New York Mayor Eric Adams in exchange for an agreement to support Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda. Calling the deal a ‘quid pro quo,’ Danielle Sassoon, Trump’s own appointee as interim U.S. attorney in Manhattan, resigned, as did eight other Justice Department lawyers,” said McQuade.
Additionally, the department’s Antitrust Division approved Paramount’s $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros., but only after the parent company of CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and gutted 60 Minutes after both were critical of Trump.
And McQuade said the powers of the Justice Department have been used to attack those who have crossed the president.
“Baseless charges in the Eastern District of Virginia against New York Attorney General Letitia James, who secured a judgment against Trump’s company in a civil fraud case, and former FBI Director James Comey, who led the agency during its investigation into connections between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia … ” said McQuade.
Undeterred, prosecutors later indicted Comey again for allegedly threatening to kill the president by posting online a photo of seashells spelling out the numbers ‘8647.’ Other targets include former chair of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell, members of Congress who participated in a video accurately stating that illegal military orders may be disobeyed, and members of the intelligence community who investigated Russian election interference in 2016.
“A politicized Department of Justice erodes the rule of law when a president uses it as a tool to favor some Americans and a cudgel to punish others. Over time, people tend to grow cynical about the law and lose trust in its stewards, making it more difficult to obtain compliance and hold offenders accountable. Our society becomes less safe and less just, allowing the powerful to prey upon the vulnerable,” said McQuade.

  6. Thanks for the Philly editorial catch Patd. I’ve had dinner chats with Democrats recently who advise caution but I respectfully disagreed. Like the editorial says this isn’t a time for hand wringing about political consequences. The man is wrecking our country and the global economy. I’d even say he could get us all killed.

  11. Craig – I am pretty sure most Dems, Indies, and those planning on voting for Dems, have no idea what the party to working towards. Anyone see Schumer or Jefferies on the campaign trail? Has any national ad explained what is going to happen when the Dems take control of the Congress? I know what my local politicians are talking about, except for van Hollen and Alsobrooks my senators, they have not done much stomping around either. At least the governor, Moore, keeps the media humming. Overall, the Dem leadership needs to be refreshed.

  12. I get that BB, but I will defend Schumer and Hakeen for political savvy in how they they’ve recruited candidates, raised money and allocated resources in a way that is maximizing the natural leverage Dems have this year. That’s backroom stuff though, and yes I totally agree they ought not be the faces of the party going forward.

  13. MEASLES ON THE BALLOT UPDATE

“Epidemic of Choice” is the only accurate frame. It cuts straight through the clinical jargon. When 95% of national cases—and 99% of patients in Pennsylvania—are unvaccinated, this isn’t a sudden failure of modern medicine. It is a crisis invited in through the front door.

Deliberate decisions and culture war grift turned a conquered disease back into a daily headline.

Pennsylvania just blew past the 1,000-case mark, hitting 1,078 cases across 41 counties—more than a quarter of the national total. Lancaster County alone has over 400 infections. The state counts five dead, but federal bureaucrats at the CDC are still dragging their feet on the official count, recognizing only two while they argue over standardized definitions.

Now the virus is moving into everyday retail spaces like a CVS and a Giant supermarket in Chester County. With New York declaring a statewide emergency, these unvaccinated infections are surging across state lines while HHS Secy RFK Jr quibbles about terminology.

  14. Ossoff: “I think Pete Hegseth is frankly a deeply unwell person who seems to relish this kind of brutality all the while he’s running a department that is falling into chaos. The guy cannot run the military competently and is spending his time with this kind of obscene medieval spectacle.”

Will Kentucky 6 Spark a Dem Wave?

Zach Dembo targets Andy Barr in Kentucky 6. We dissect Tom Cotton in Arkansas, NY ICE agents, and Nelson rescues us from Gary Busey.

A massive welcome to our first-time caller Nelson, who successfully dragged us back into the political weeds right as we were getting hopelessly lost in a disturbing detour about Gary Busey and buttered sausage. Nelson brought the heat with a deep dive into Kentucky 6, where Zach Dembo is running a razor-sharp campaign for Andy Barr’s open seat. It is exactly the kind of bellwether district we need to keep an eye on when early returns start rolling in Nov. 3.

Before we hit the trail to Kentucky, we swap war stories from the Senate floor, reminiscing about the stark contrast between a gracious George McGovern and a notoriously grumpy Claiborne Pell. We also dig into the exploding ICE budget, complete with brand new Nissan Pathfinders at the Whipple building and undercover agents prowling New York.

Finally, we turn our sights to Arkansas, where Tom Cotton is deploying heavy-handed spin to dodge local radio questions about his residency. We break down the pushback he is getting and whether a JD Vance ticket maneuver might be Donald Trump’s ultimate escape hatch. Oh, and yes, there is plenty of Famous Dave’s barbecue talk sprinkled in for good measure.

    Where were those men taken?’

    by Jasmine Garsd, Immigration Correspondent
A few weeks ago, a New Jersey source emailed me: ICE was using a warehouse in Roxbury to hold immigrant detainees.

I’d been to Roxbury earlier this year, when the Department of Homeland Security bought warehouses nationwide to convert into detention facilities. Protests and a lawsuit followed, and the facility was paused pending environmental review.

But over the summer, as ICE arrests skyrocketed, rumors spread: People were being detained and taken to the warehouse.

Sen. Roger Marshall confirmed that a cookie bill that sat unpaid for over six years has now been paid — a bill he said he had “absolutely no idea” how it was missed.

Holly Thomas, founder of Holly’s Sweet Treats, posted on social media Thursday, claiming Marshall’s campaign ordered over $600 in cookies and other treats from her bakery for his primary election watch party in 2020.

Thomas said the order wasn’t paid for until Saturday. The bill was due Sept. 2, 2020.

“Do you know why I will never vote for Roger Marshall?” Thomas asked in her post. “Because six years ago, when I was a brand-new small business owner, his campaign ordered cookies and treats from my bakery for his primary election watch party. … For nearly a year, I made repeated attempts to collect payment, reaching out by phone and email. I never received a return phone call, and the invoice was never paid.”

*But, unlike his patients, Roger Marshall wasn’t arrested and thrown in the clink.

“Every single dollar mattered,” she wrote. “Those cookies and treats cost money to make, employees’ time to prepare, and resources that my little business couldn’t afford to give away. Six years later, I haven’t forgotten.”

Thomas said her post isn’t about political parties or political disagreements, but about her own personal experience as a small business owner and “the importance of honoring financial commitments.”

That said financial commitment was honored more than six years later, Marshall confirmed Saturday, paying double for the order. Thomas also confirmed she received payment.

“As some folks may have seen, there was a post on social media regarding an unpaid 2020 cookie bill,” Marshall wrote in a social media post. “We have absolutely no idea how this happened, but rest assured as soon as it became known to us, we immediately attempted to contact the business in order to apologize, and we have repaid the bill from 2020, double.”

  28. Taxpayer dollars and campaign cash repeatedly blur for Roger Marshall

Taxpayer dollars and campaign cash repeatedly blur for Roger Marshall

According to Marshall’s most recent Federal Election Commission records filed in July, no one working for Marshall’s campaign had received a paycheck in the past five years — a situation that campaign finance experts said was potentially unprecedented in the modern era of politics.

But according to Marshall’s chief of staff, Brent Robertson, the campaign now does have some paid staff, though he declined to offer evidence or details, such as how many people were being paid or when their employment began.

Still, campaign experts say the situation raises questions about the line between Marshall’s campaign and his taxpayer-funded Senate office.

  30. Bribery Scandal Snags Collins

Maine: The first high-quality poll since the Susan Collins corruption story broke.shows Democrat Troy Jackson ahead 50%–46%. Average of polls before the Sept. 22 Pro Publica investigation showed just the reverse, with Collins ahead 49%–46%.

The Washington Post–Schar School poll, conducted September 30–October 5, found that voters favor Jackson by 15 points on reducing corruption. Collins is underwater at 51% unfavorable, and 58% say she has supported Trump too much.

Maine is looking like a genuine Democratic pickup opportunity, not merely another Collins escape act waiting to happen.

Russia’s Yandex bot traffic plunges after Ukraine drone strikes cripple ‘Russia Google’ data centers

Russian bot traffic has dropped dramatically in the past few days after Ukraine knocked out Yandex’s biggest data centers, with a third attack happening last night. Cloudflare reports that bot traffic from the Yandex network has dropped to just 0.4% of the maximum number of HTTP requests recorded in the past two weeks. It initially dropped to around 57% on Oct. 8, which happened when Ukraine hit a Yandex data center housing two supercomputers in Sasovo, Russia, located around 195 miles to the southeast of the Kremlin. A second, bigger Yandex campus in Kaluga, about 220 miles to the west of Sasovo, was knocked offline yesterday.

Backlash ensues after the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire calls for assassinations again

The Libertarian Party of New Hampshire is facing backlash after calling for the assassination of “basically every elected Democrat” in the state in a now-deleted X post.

The group has a history of calling for assassinations of elected officials, and voicing other extreme and divisive rhetoric online that ultimately led to their disaffiliation with the National Libertarian Party.

In the past, the NHLP has condoned the assassination of Kamala Harris, used its platform to direct homophobic rhetoric at Libertarian presidential nominee Chase Oliver, and openly criticized the national party’s effectiveness.

The national party cut ties with the LPNH in May, due to the “unfortunate culmination of years of behavior in violation of the Libertarian Party’s platform,” Libertarian National Committee Chair Evan McMahon said in a statement posted on social media.

The Libertarian Party Judicial Committee later unanimously rejected LPNH’s appeal and the national party now recognizes the Granite State Libertarian Party as its New Hampshire affiliate.

If asked, be honest, but don’t bring it up.

  38. my main takeaway is I can see why Republicans are pumping millions into her race all of a sudden because Darlene must be worried too. she spent most of her time talking about her opponent

  39. Dr Annie walloped Darline Graham. The libertarian, who i’d guess doesn’t stand a chance, was way better than Graham. Graham did what all the repubs are doing, she just issued personal attacks. I think people are finally tired of that, I am. Dr Andrews was so much more professional.

  44. CNN using Craig’s CCC format but just Cost and Corruption , on their panel an hour ago.
I only knew Claiborne Pell from the grants. I wonder why he was so mean.
Senator Claiborne Pell was from **Rhode Island**. He was Rhode Island’s longest-serving U.S. senator, serving six consecutive terms from 1961 to 1997, described in tributes as the senior Senator from Rhode Island.

His greatest accomplishment in Washington is universally considered to be the creation of what we now call **Pell Grants**.

When asked his greatest achievement, Pell himself always answered quickly, “Pell Grants”. He sponsored the legislation creating the Basic Educational Opportunity Grants, which passed in 1972 and provided direct aid to college students. The awards were renamed “Pell Grants” in 1980. By the time he retired they had aided more than 54 million low- and middle-income Americans.

Two other major legacies are often cited alongside it:

    – He wrote the legislation that established the **National Endowment for the Arts** and the **National Endowment for the Humanities**
    – He was the driving force behind the **National Sea Grant College Program**, the ocean-focused counterpart to the land-grant college system.
