Russian tech giant Yandex has said it was struggling to maintain services after two of its five data centres were struck by Ukrainian drones in the past two days.

The exact scope of the disruption to the company’s services is unclear – though it told state news agency Tass that some of its AI chatbot functions were temporarily unavailable, while its smart home devices may also experience problems.

  10. https://united24media.com/war-in-ukraine/ukraine-struck-yandex-data-centers-russian-bots-went-silent-now-questions-are-mounting-23339

Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum in Poland, Zelenskyy highlighted Russia’s extensive network of social media bots, which he described as a tool for destabilizing online discussions.

Zelenskyy noted that “everyone noticed” a reduction in Russian bot activity after Ukrainian drones struck data centers operated by Yandex, Russia’s largest internet technology company, according to BBC News Ukrainian.

The president’s remarks followed reports of a sharp decline in automated internet traffic originating from Yandex’s network, although the available data does not establish whether Russian propaganda operations were affected.

According to an October 12 analysis by The Deep Dive, Cloudflare Radar data showed that automated HTTP requests from Yandex’s AS13238 network fell sharply after October 8 and approached zero on October 11.

At 02:00 UTC on October 11, automated requests stood at just 0.3% of the chart’s maximum, compared with 88.2% at the same hour a week earlier. Cloudflare classified 99.6% of HTTP requests to HTML content from the network during the seven-day period as automated.

The reported decline from 88.2% to 0.3% represents a change in traffic relative to the chart’s maximum, not a reduction in the number of social media accounts. Similarly, the 99.6% figure indicates the proportion of requests classified as automated, rather than the share associated with propaganda.

German technology publication t3n also documented the decline, reporting that bot traffic fell to approximately 0.4% of the previous week’s level before recovering to around 20% by the evening of October 11.

These measurements show a sharp reduction in automated network activity, but cannot establish whether Russian propaganda bots disappeared or whether damaged infrastructure stopped generating ordinary automated traffic.

  11. https://cybernews.com/news/yandex-data-centers-bot-traffic-drop/

Yandex bot traffic fell, but the troll farm story does not hold
Russia’s disinformation machine still looks intact.

Ukrainian drones shredding Russian bot networks and helping Western democracies along the way would be a wild story indeed. But it’s just not true – people are naively (or deliberately) confusing bots with “bots,” a word used to describe state-sponsored social media accounts.

A thread by “antibot4navalny,” which has been tracking state-sponsored social media campaigns and troll farms, has helpfully explained that the Cloudflare “Bot Traffic” chart many are citing is really about automated web crawlers operated by Yandex accessing the web.

This data, therefore, shows neither the volume of internet traffic across Russia nor the number of messages posted on any particular social network.
According to Cloudflare’s bot classification, traffic with a bot score of 1 to 29 is considered likely automated, while a score of 30 or higher is considered likely human.

“The Cloudflare chart has nothing to do with social media. Cloudflare measures automated requests to websites (of any kind, among which social media share is negligible),” wrote “antibot4navalny.”
Actually, if one looked at Cloudflare’s Russia-totals chart, one would see that the volume of bot traffic last week was largely the same as in any other week.
Finally, although Yandex bot traffic fell to an extremely low level last week, it began recovering on Sunday and is definitely not stuck near zero.

Ilhan Omar Raid & DC Ballot Box Blockade

Homeland Security raids Ilhan Omar as National Guard troops block a DC ballot box. Plus, breaking down Trump’s absurd Russian diesel deal with Putin.

Homeland Security is executing search warrants on Ilhan Omar over decades-old family paperwork right before the midterms. It is a blatant harassment campaign designed to make the Minnesota congresswoman the face of the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, down at the GW Foggy Bottom Metro station, National Guard troops were caught standing directly in front of a DC Board of Elections ballot drop box. Federal law prohibits armed troops at election sites, but the real test is whether local state attorney generals will actually enforce it when the pressure is on.

Over in Kentucky, former Justice Department prosecutor Zach Dembo is turning Andy Barr’s district into a true bellwether race. If early returns from Indiana and Kentucky tilt blue, it signals a massive shift. Down in South Carolina, Dr. Annie Andrews is rattling Lindsey Graham so badly the national party is pulling money from other races just to keep him afloat.

Throw in Trump publicly thanking Vladimir Putin for a microscopic shipment of Russian diesel that wouldn’t fuel the United States for half a day, and the desperation is showing. They only know how to talk to the MAGA base, and that base is shrinking.

How Texas candidates plan to lower the cost of gas, groceries and housing

Ken Paxton R He said he would target the corporations that supply Americans’ food, accusing them of being monopolies that price gouge and engage in unfair business practices, particularly meatpackers. Paxton also promised to rein in government spending, which he argued has driven up inflation.

James Talarico D He promises to push back against efforts to restrict federal food aid programs, increase oversight into the mergers of companies that supply food, remove tariffs on produce that can’t be grown in the U.S. and work to increase competition among grocery providers.

    ___

Greg Abbott R He has not publicized a plan to tackle high grocery costs. His website says his efforts to boost the Texas economy have put money in Texans’ wallets.

Gina Hinojosa D She promises to go after the major corporations that supply Texans’ food, arguing they put their profits ahead of consumers. She specifically pointed to the practice of surveillance pricing, or an algorithm that works to determine the highest price a consumer is willing to pay when shopping online.

    ___

Dan Patrick R He has not released a plan to specifically address grocery prices.

Vikki Goodwin D She said she would support the Texas Food System Security and Resiliency Planning Council, a body created in 2024 that is intended to monitor and address food supply chain issues. She also promised to invest in local farmers and ranchers.

  21. https://www.npr.org/2025/09/18/nx-s1-5534424/beef-prices-record-high-cost

America’s beef cattle herd is the smallest in 75 years, in part because of drought. But Americans’ love of hamburgers and steaks has kept demand strong — until recently.

Meanwhile, foreign imports are also down. Brazilian beef faces a 76% tariff. Fears about the screwworm parasite have led the USDA to block livestock from crossing from Mexico to the U.S. to safeguard the nation’s food supply.

    *But Paxton is blaming meatpackers.

  22. ICE tried to share voter data with Peter Thiel’s Palantir, new documents show

It’s unclear precisely where ICE obtained the voter records. However, the data involved voters in at least six states: Missouri, Michigan, New Mexico, Connecticut, Georgia and Kentucky.

It’s also uncertain how that information would be pertinent to ICE’s operations, as state voter data would contain very little information on noncitizens. But Trump and his allies have repeatedly claimed — erroneously — that illegal voting by noncitizens is widespread as they attempt to influence state election procedures, push for stricter voting laws and undermine election results.

The nonprofit legal group Democracy Forward** obtained the government documents through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against ICE seeking any information about the agency’s role in election-related operations. The records are a series of reports Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) — the immigration agency’s investigative arm — made for other parts of the Department of Homeland Security.

HSI tried to share the information with Palantir as part of DHS’s sweeping search for illegal voting by noncitizens before the upcoming midterms.

“I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible,” he once wrote, explaining his strategy for achieving his libertarian goals.

In a July internal report, HSI indicated that data from those six states “are pending Palantir entry into ELITE,” the highly detailed map-based software the tech company built for ICE to identify, prioritize and locate people targeted for immigration enforcement.

The document noted that the information had been “enriched” by “iLab,” referring to HSI’s Innovation Lab. Generally, data enrichment refers to merging datasets to add missing context, depth or usability. The document did not indicate exactly what data iLab incorporated into the voter records.

  23. WAITING FOR MAGA

Now it comes down to turnout. No one should be surprised that Democrats look more fired up. But will MAGA voters surprise us when the ballots are counted? We may have to wait to find out. For now, here’s the baseline.

Pew’s poll shows a clear shift in enthusiasm toward Democratic voters: 63% of those backing Democratic House candidates say they’re extremely motivated to vote, compared with 46% of Republican backers. Half of Democratic backers say they’ve given the election a lot of thought, versus 36% of Republicans. And 78% of Democrats say control of Congress really matters, compared with 69% of Republicans. In October 2022, Republicans led on all three measures. That points to stronger Democratic intensity, though these are self-reported attitudes—not proof of who will turn out.

  24. https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/russ-vought-insists-he-has-a-neat-trick-to-override-congress-its-more-a-confession-experts-say

Russ Vought insists he has a neat trick to override Congress. It’s more ‘a confession,’ experts say

. In a handful of cases, they are literally impounding programs to death, where they are effectively saying we’re just not going to do the activity at all.”

For example, they are pocket rescinding 99% of a Department of Education program aimed at providing “grants and fellowships to support institutions in bridging foreign students and faculty to the United States to study or teach language, conduct research, and provide professional and curriculum development.”

The administration is also impounding 96.6% of a Department of Housing and Urban Development program “that provides grants to nongovernmental organizations (NGOS) and public entities for counseling and education to individuals on a spectrum of housing matters.”

“People who study appropriations law say that there’s actually no greater power than Congress’s power of the purse. It’s actually the foremost power of Congress,” Charlie Ellsworth, adviser to Public Citizen and former budget and appropriations staffer for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, told TPM. “And the administration is taking that head on, trying to expand its reach so that they can choose what gets spent regardless of appropriations law.”

  25. https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/what-might-russ-voughts-tremendous-surprise-actually-be-79dd722a

Whether it would come before the midterms (an “October Surprise”) or after (a “November Surprise”) is unclear.

But President Trump has hinted strongly that there’s a big announcement coming very soon from his budget director, Russell Vought.

Last week, Trump said Vought was “going to be making a tremendous announcement soon.” And Trump added that Vought is “working on something that’s going to be so good for our country.” He did add a bit of a qualifier, though, saying the impact would be enormous “if he pulls this off.”

    What could it be?

The White House has been trying to find ways to cut spending without Congress, and this could be the kind of thing that is best kept under wraps until after the midterms. Also, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in August said he was working with Vought on a big fiscal consolidation package. The bond market has wanted the White House to get serious about the giant budget deficit. Maybe this is how they plan to dig in?

Meanwhile, Trump has promised all American adults a $5,000 check if Republicans retain control of Congress in the midterms, something that—by his own estimate—could cost $1 trillion.

The only other possibility is that it might be a huge deregulatory announcement.

  27. https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-vows-big-surprises-with-project-2025-author-before-midterms-12533986

Project 2025’s 900-page playbook outlines a series of plans for future government. Within this, the document argues for changes to federal oversight and enforcement in several areas connected to election law and campaign regulation.

While the OMB influences federal spending and grant policy that supports election-related programs, election-support agencies, and staffing or restructuring within federal agencies, it has no authority to replace election administrators or directly oversee state-run elections.

  32. MUSK TRIES TO BUY ELECTION FOR THE GOP

AP — Republicans just received an enormous last-minute financial rescue. Federal filings disclosed October 12 show Elon Musk gave $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund and $76 million to America PAC. He separately gave $10 million to the pro–Ken Paxton Lone Star Liberty PAC in Texas. apnews.com

The money bankrolls Republican advertising and turnout operations in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Texas, giving the GOP fresh resources to defend several races that polling now places within a few points. Musk has now spent more than $276 million since July, making him the largest known donor of the 2026 elections.

  33. Here’s a ranking from my ChatGPT buddy on what Trump and Vought might be up to:
    1. A major “fiscal consolidation” plan — most likely.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in August that Trump had assigned him and Vought to develop a package addressing both federal spending and revenue. Bessent said it could produce hundreds of billions of dollars in savings. The promised announcement never fully materialized, making it the clearest unfinished Vought project matching Trump’s description.
    2. Another attempt to cut or withhold congressionally approved spending.
Vought’s established strategy is to assert broad presidential power over appropriations. A fiscal package could therefore include agency closures, additional mass layoffs, rescissions or impoundment of funds—actions certain to provoke lawsuits and a constitutional fight.
    3. A financing scheme for Trump’s promised $5,000 checks.
Trump has conditioned those checks on a Republican election victory, while Vought has said the administration would not explain the financing until afterward. The estimated cost is roughly $1.2 TRILLION, and they might be devising a way to pay for it without Congress.
    4. A large deregulatory initiative.
This fits Vought’s portfolio and Project 2025 agenda, but there is less direct evidence connecting it to this particular announcement.
    5. Direct interference with voting — unsupported speculation.
The timing naturally creates alarm, especially alongside taxpayer-funded advertising and pre-election government payments. But I found no credible reporting tying Vought’s announcement to election administration, voting procedures, postponement or cancellation. That possibility is circulating largely as conjecture, not sourced intelligence.
My bottom line: Expect some grandly packaged combination of spending cuts, revenue claims and expanded presidential control over federal money—possibly presented as the magic arithmetic behind Trump’s $5,000 promise. Vought’s involvement makes a fiscal and executive-power maneuver much more plausible than a direct attack on the mechanics of the election.

  34. To Elect Trump Elon spent $290 Million US Dollars

Now he’s spending $366 Million for Republicans to remain in power

  36. Are they going to try deporting a member of Congress?
The probe of Rep. Ilhan Oma is focusing on the following:
Naturalization Documents: The investigation centers on paperwork filed by Omar’s late father when she became a U.S. citizen in 2000, following her arrival as a refugee from Somalia in 1995.
Age Discrepancy Claims: Federal investigators are reportedly examining allegations that Omar may have been older than 17 when she obtained citizenship through her father as a minor, stemming from alleged discrepancies in historical records regarding her birth year.
Criminal Investigation: The recent search of her home by U.S. immigration authorities was executed as part of this ongoing criminal probe
    — Reuters, Boston.com

  37. FWIW, Omar spent 4 years in a Kenyan refugee camp after fleeing with her father from the Somali Civil War (which is still going on) then came to the US after being granted asylum. She was 13 when she came to the US and 17 when she became a citizen. “I’m a committed Christian, and my faith guides every area of my life,” Paxton said. He added that he’s worshipped in congregations around the state during the campaign.

He used to attend Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, whose pastor, Jack Graham, is a Trump ally. Paxton hasn’t talked about leaving, and a longtime adviser said in March he hadn’t gone there in years. In 1998, Paxton was among the founders of Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. Allies say he’s dropped into their congregations on the campaign trail. State Rep. Mitch Little, who helped defend Paxton at his impeachment trial, said he visited Little’s Carrollton church this summer, though Little doesn’t know where he usually goes. Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress said Paxton stopped by his church a few weeks ago.

Questions about his faith come amid a messy personal storyline.
