Whskyjack — In remembrance of women’s history month on the Sunday before St Patrick’s day, I found a composition by twentieth century Irish composer, Joan Trimble.
Joan composed a total of twenty-four works in a creative career of twenty years, including Buttermilk Point (1938), settings of Irish folksong (1939-40), the Sonatina for Two Pianos (1940), The Heather Glen (1949), and a Suite for Strings (1951). Her Phantasy for Piano trio (1940), which she wrote at the suggestion of Vaughan Williams, won the Cobbett Prize for chamber music and the Sullivan Prize for composition. The County Mayo (1949) was an unusual combination of two pianos and baritone voice, a suggestion from the singer Robert Irwin. Commissions for the BBC included Ulster Airs (1939–40) for the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra, and Erin Go Bragh, a march-rhapsody for brass band (1943). Her setting for voice and orchestra, How Dear to Me the Hour, won the Radio Éireann Centenary Prize in 1953.
In 1957, the BBC commissioned an opera from her, and she chose the 1924 Blind Raftery by Donn Byrne, the story of a wandering Irish bard set in the west of Ireland in the 17th century. She asked Cedric Cliffe, who had worked with Arthur Benjamin, to write the libretto It was the second opera commissioned by the BBC for television, and it was the first television opera written by a female composer

last year the Ides were celebrated via pink postcards courtesy of an effort by https://www.mobilize.us/indivisible/event/762924/
The “Ides of Trump” is a nationwide postcard protest against Donald Trump, scheduled for March 15th, where participants mail postcards to the White House expressing opposition to him.
Overview
The “Ides of Trump” campaign is a coordinated political protest in which participants send postcards to Donald Trump at the White House on March 15th, symbolically referencing the historical Ides of March, the date Julius Caesar was assassinated, to signal accountability and opposition. The campaign encourages people to express their disapproval of Trump’s actions and policies, emphasizing his unpopularity and perceived failures.
How the Campaign Works
Postcards: Participants are encouraged to use pink postcards or pink card stock cut to postcard size (4×6 inches) to symbolize a “pink slip” or termination.
Messages: Messages can be creative, ranging from critiques of Trump’s accomplishments to broader political statements. Sample messages are provided by organizers, but individuals can add personal thoughts.
Mailing: All postcards are mailed on March 15th to:
President Donald J. Trump
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500.
Social Media: Participants are encouraged to share photos of their postcards and use the hashtag #TheIdesOfTrump to amplify the protest online.
Purpose and Symbolism
The campaign aims to:
Demonstrate widespread opposition to Trump in a visible, coordinated manner.
Symbolically “fire” Trump using the pink slip motif, reflecting dissatisfaction with his leadership.
Engage citizens in a collective political action that is peaceful but highly visible, potentially overwhelming the White House mail system with messages of dissent.
Organizers highlight that if each participant sends even a single postcard, the cumulative effect could surpass historical records for fan mail, creating a symbolic flood of public opinion

CBS Sunday Mornjng just did a piece on the movie Mr. Nobody vs Putin, and the director’s last words were about how people deal with government crumbling as things are destroyed…and in this house it was all Putin is evil & US is good & everything here is fine. How can folks be so nearsighted?
Craig,
Here is a simple recipe. The Malawach fried bread up on my blog is rather involved and you might enjoy it, but definitely not Lazy Man material. The sauce on the other hand is good for all sorts of uses:
Schug: (spicy pesto) dipping sauce. This sauce can be used with meat and vegetables as well as the malawach.
1 cup tomato puree
2 bunches cilantro
1 bunch parsley
4-5 cloves garlic, peeled
2 Serrano peppers or 4 Thai red chili peppers, stemmed
1/2 cup olive oil, plus extra if needed
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt or 1 teaspoon table salt
1/2 lemon, juiced
Cut and discard the visible, leafless stems from the cilantro and parsley. Wash and pat dry. Place the cilantro and parsley in a blender with the remaining ingredients. Blend at low speed, stopping often to smash down the ingredients as they combine. Turn up speed and blend thoroughly. Mix one teaspoon (or more to taste) of schug into one cup of tomato puree.

Trump calls ‘lowlife’ media ‘sick and demented’ over Iran war coverage
President Donald Trump tore into the media over coverage of Air Force refueling planes reportedly hit by an Iranian missile strike at a Saudi Arabian air base.
The Wall Street Journal had reported Friday that five tanker planes had been “struck and damaged” by Iran at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, citing U.S. officials. Notably, the Journal did not state that the planes were destroyed, but in fact wrote that the planes were “damaged but not fully destroyed” and were “being repaired.”
“In actuality, the Base was hit a few days ago, but the planes were not ‘struck’ or “destroyed,’” he wrote.

https://sfstandard.com/2025/11/23/extended-courtship-linking-jeffrey-epstein-peter-thiel-israeli-officials/
Leaked emails from Israeli officials — obtained by the Iran-linked hacking group Handala, uploaded by the nonprofit Distributed Denial of Secrets, and reviewed by The Standard — show that years before Palantir’s rise, Israeli officials were jockeying for Thiel’s attention and access to his company.
The cache, which includes correspondence between Barak, Prosor, former Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz, and other senior Israeli figures, offers a rare peek behind the curtain of defense-tech diplomacy — a revolving door of sorts in which national security officials, venture capitalists, and other geopolitical titans work to influence one another.
It also shows how Silicon Valley and Israel’s political establishment have been intertwined for far longer and more intimately than many realize.
The hacked emails, which date from the early 2000s to 2018, read like an A-list Silicon Valley Rolodex: Thiel, Palantir CEO Alex Karp, Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison, Oracle Executive Vice Chair Safra Catz, and Jeff Bezos all make appearances, mostly on the receiving end of Israeli officials’ entreaties to Silicon Valley.
Some of the emails are reported here for the first time.
The emails were posted with metadata or cryptographic signatures that are usually used to verify such hacks, and The Standard has verified details from public sources as well as interviews with former Palantir employees, defense-tech analysts, and corporate watchdogs. Some of the contents have also been confirmed by the Epstein files released by Congress.
In the years since the emails were sent, Palantir and other Silicon Valley giants have deepened their relationships with Israel, particularly after Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack, when tech companies became some of Israel’s most vocal corporate allies. The week after the attack, Palantir bought a full-page ad in The New York Times declaring: “Palantir stands with Israel.”
“It’s not just about Israel,” Karp told CNBC last year (opens in new tab).
“It’s like, ‘Do you believe in the West? Do you believe the West has created a superior way of living?’”
By 2014, Epstein had a relationship with Thiel. The two had at least three meetings scheduled in September of that year alone, according to copies of Epstein’s calendar obtained by The New York Times (opens in new tab).
In hindsight, they were getting into business together: In the year or so after these meetings, Epstein put $40 million into Valar Ventures, a firm Thiel cofounded, according to The New York Times.
Meanwhile, Epstein had forged a close friendship with [Ehud] Barak.
In 2014, Epstein was eager to connect his two contacts, urging Barak over email to have dinner with Thiel. Barak eventually agreed to Epstein’s overture, and, according to emails he sent to friends, had dinner with the Palantir cofounder in June 2014.
The day before the dinner, Barak confessed to Gary Fegel, a billionaire who was an executive at commodity trading firm Glencore, that he had crossed paths with Thiel a few years prior at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “He was, I guess, under some drug impact,” he wrote. “Probably he doesn’t even recall it.”
Barak told Fegel the dinner would be spent “talking just geopolitics.”
“I think [Thiel is] of huge potential to accelerate things by the sheer reputation [he’s] got,” Barak told Fegel. “No way it’s a waist [sic] of time.”
In 2016, Barak would go on to meet with senior partners at “a new Investment Fund owned by Peter Thiel and JE” — presumably Valar Ventures — to speak about Reporty, an emergency notification startup backed by Barak. By 2018, Founders Fund, cofounded by Thiel, invested as (opens in new tab) part of Reporty’s $15 million Series B.
“In defense contracting space, relationships are everything. If you know the right person, that can make the difference between you landing a contract and not landing a contract,” Freeman said.
“It’s especially true with foreign governments and with the Israeli government,” he added, noting that Israel is among the largest foreign recipients of U.S. arms and that Washington has pledged to ensure the country has a “qualitative edge” over its neighbors.
The emails showed how Silicon Valley and Israel worked in tandem, helping each other get access to various nexuses of power. For example, in 2015, after Ellison spoke with then-Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Prosor wanted a full debriefing. “How was the conversation with Mario [sic] Rubio,” he wrote. “Did he pass your scrutiny? Did you have a chance to talk about Israel?”
Ellison, a vocal Zionist (opens in new tab), reassured Prosor. “Great meeting with Marco Rubio. I set him up to meet with Tony Blair,” he said, referring to the former British prime minister. “Marco will be a great friend for Israel.”
Meanwhile, Oracle’s then-CEO, Catz, wanted to convert her political connections into cultural cachet. In 2015, she sent Barak a pitch: he should be a consulting producer on a reality show produced by her sister, Sarit Catz, called “Women of the IDF.”
She said she was “horrified” by the boycott, divest, and sanction movement against Israel that was gaining steam on U.S. college campuses. “We have to fight this battle before the kids even get to college,” she wrote. “We believe that we have to embed the love and respect for Israel in the American culture.”
The leak also demonstrates the network effects of Silicon Valley itself: how a single tweet could pull investors, founders, and diplomats into the same orbit. That was the case when Paul Graham, the Y Combinator cofounder, weighed in on Israel in 2014.
That year, Graham tweeted (opens in new tab) articles about human rights abuses committed by the Israel Defense Forces. One said, “Amnesty International: Stop arms transfers to Israel amid growing evidence of war crimes in Gaza.”
Investor Mark Suster of Upfront Ventures shot back on Facebook: (opens in new tab) “To see people like Paul Graham so manipulated by this media and become a tool of the terrorists makes it that much more disappointing and inspires me to speak up more loudly.”
Prosor was impressed by Suster’s outspokenness and reached out to someone with whom he had been building a relationship all year: Thiel. “I really love the way Suster defended Israel,” he wrote. “Do you have his contact number so I can call him and commend him for standing up for Israel??”
Thiel’s assistant sent Prosor the contact info, and the ambassador and Suster spoke on the phone. Ten months later, Prosor hosted Suster and his Upfront Ventures partner, Stuart Lander, at the United Nations.

Tucker Carlson Claims CIA Has Been Reading His Texts to Frame Him
In a video posted on X and YouTube on Saturday, Carlson alleged that the CIA had read his text messages and was preparing to report him to the Department of Justice for “acting as an agent of a foreign power” and “talking to people in Iran” before the ongoing war in the Middle Eastern country.
“When you discover the CIA has been reading your texts in order to frame you for a crime,” Carlson wrote in the caption to his video on X.
“One, I’m not an agent of a foreign power. Unlike a lot of people commenting on U.S. politics and global affairs, I have only one loyalty, and that’s the United States, and have never acted against it,” he said. “I’ve also never taken money from anybody. Don’t need it, don’t want it. And that’s provable. And moreover, it’s my job to talk to everybody all the time and try and figure out what’s happening around the world. That’s literally what I do for a living. And I’m not going to stop doing that. Nor should I, I don’t think. I’m also an American. I can talk to anybody.”
Carlson said that “countries tend to become more authoritarian in wartime” and that “the United States fights wars on behalf of freedom, but there’s always less of it here in our country during war.”
The conservative commentator told viewers that intelligence agencies pass on criminal complaints to law enforcement to “justify warrants for spying on Americans” and “to leak the existence of the investigation, such as it is, to the media and then humiliate and terrify the subjects of this op.”

Ex-GOP Honcho Says Trump Should Drop ‘A Dozen’ Nukes on Strait of Hormuz
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) shared an explosive idea to re-open the Strait of Hormuz that has been essentially closed to shipping by Iranian attacks and mines.
The narrow passageway is the conduit for up to 30% of the world’s total oil consumption and 20% of global liquefied natural gas.
Although he hasn’t been seen in public since becoming Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei vowed in a written statement to use the “lever of blocking the Strait of Hormuz” to keep the enemy “highly vulnerable”.
President Donald Trump has urged allies — like France, South Korea, Japan, and the UK — as well as China, to send warships to the Strait to police the area and keep it open for oil shipments.
But Gingrich posited that it would be much better to open the Strait with a nuclear attack.
“Instead of fighting over a 21-mile-wide bottleneck forever,” Gingrich wrote, “we cut a new channel through friendly territory.”
“A dozen thermonuclear detonations and you’ve got a waterway wider than the Panama Canal, deeper than the Suez, and safe from Iranian attacks,” Gingrich wrote.

State law already allows challenges to a voter’s registration up to the 90th day before an election, if a person is suspected of lacking South Dakota residency, voting in another state or being registered to vote in another state. The new law adds citizenship as a justification for a challenge.
The challenge must be in the form of a signed, sworn statement and must include what the law describes as “documented evidence.”
If a county auditor deems the challenge valid, registrants are given a chance to produce documentation verifying their registration is valid. If the auditor ultimately cancels the registration, the person may appeal to a court or their local county commission.
Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation that would require people to produce a passport or birth certificate in most cases to register to vote. South Dakota’s lone member of the House, Republican Dusty Johnson, voted in favor of the bill.
The legislation, titled the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or SAVE Act for short, is pending in the Senate. President Donald Trump threatened Sunday to withhold his signature from other legislation until Congress sends the bill to his desk.
I’ve never seen a birth certificate with a picture of what the infant would look like when they were over 18.
NEW THREAD
Craig,
George Washington said many things to Henry Knox, primarily in private letters expressing concerns about the weak government, support for a stronger federal system (like the Constitution), and his reluctance to become president, famously calling it a “reprieve” to return home but feeling like a “culprit going to the place of his execution” when accepting the presidency. Their correspondence revealed deep trust, with Washington sharing anxieties about national stability and the need for vigorous action.
