Troy Jackson, the 58-year-old progressive and former candidate for governor, hasn’t formally acquired his party’s nomination following Graham Platner’s exit, since that will be decided at a state convention on Saturday. But he is on track do so, after his delegates—selected at county meetings last weekend—far outnumber those of others the race, the New York Times reports.
If Jackson indeed becomes the nominee, he’ll start the general election campaign in a good position.
According to a University of New Hampshire poll conducted July 15-20, 49 percent of likely voters said they would vote for Jackson, while 46 percent opted for Collins. Five percent were either undecided or chose another candidate.

President Donald Trump’s $10 billion BBC defamation suit backfired Tuesday when a federal judge used Trump’s own damage claims to force the surrender of his financial records.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett made the ruling in Miami federal court following a three-hour hearing.
Trump filed the suit in December 2025, accusing the BBC of deceptively editing his Jan. 6, 2021, speech to make it sound as though he called for violence, according to CNBC.
“All of President Trump’s brand, properties and businesses are impugned or said to have been impugned. Reputational, economic damages, all of that is now at issue in this case,” Lett said, ruling that Trump’s own damage claims left her no choice.
The ruling opens Trump’s finances across more than 400 companies to scrutiny by BBC attorneys, Politico reported.
Trump attorney Al Brito told Lett the case had “evolved,” arguing Trump now sought only reputational damages, not economic ones.
Lett said she lacked the power to strip those claims from the complaint.
“He ran for president of the United States on a platform of the art of the deal,” BBC attorney Chuck Tobin said. “You cannot separate the man and his reputation from his operation of his businesses.”
The hearing also addressed how far the BBC can dig into Trump’s conduct on Jan. 6 — the day a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol — with Lett ruling the network could explore how people heard his words, but no further.
“All of the impressions that were received by President Trump’s statements on Jan. 6 are at issue,” Lett said. “The full relitigation of Jan. 6 is not at issue.” [continues]

The company behind ChatGPT said the startup Hugging Face had detected and contained the agent – an AI tool designed to carry out tasks without human assistance – which had entered its systems.
“We consider this incident to be an unprecedented cyber incident, involving state-of-the-art cyber capabilities,” OpenAI said.

Biddeford, Maine leaders, residents call for justice, accountability in wake of fatal ICE shooting
While city leaders’ proclamations were met with applause, many of the roughly 40 residents at Tuesday’s meeting called for action by the city
The air was charged in Biddeford High School’s Little Theater Tuesday night as Mayor Liam LaFountain delivered a proclamation demanding justice and accountability in the fatal shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero by a federal immigration officer last week.
Following a moment of silence to honor Guerrero, LaFountain delivered remarks in a solemn tone. He met with Guerrero’s family on Monday, the one-week anniversary of Guerrero’s death.
Guerrero’s partner, Karolina Rojas Alvarez, asked for only one thing, LaFountain said: justice.
“We are here because Johan was a member of this community, our community,” LaFountain said Tuesday. “When one of us is taken like this, we do not look away. We do not stay quiet.”
Guerrero, a 25-year old father from Colombia, was killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent at the intersection of Pool and Hill streets in Biddeford early in the morning of July 13. He was working in the U.S. legally, and held a Social Security card. He was also not the intended target of the ICE operation that morning.
The Department of Homeland Security has not identified the agent, but one of his ex-wives has identified him as David Brouillette. The actions of Brouillette that resulted in the loss of Guerrero’s life were “violent and senseless,” LaFountain said, and have caused “immeasurable grief” for Guerrero’s partner, the couple’s young daughter and their family.
In his proclamation, LaFountain said he resolves “to do everything within the city’s lawful authority and available resources to support Alvarez and her daughter Dulce during this time of profound grief, despair, uncertainty and need.
“Johan’s life was not so different from yours or mine,” LaFountain said. “He lived here. He and his daughter played in the parks you and your children play in. He shopped in the same stores we shop in. He walked the same streets that we do every day. He was, by every account, a devoted father.”
Immigrants are an important part of Biddeford’s past, present and future, LaFountain acknowledged.
“To our immigrant neighbors, you belong here. You are part of who Biddeford is, and you should not have to carry that weight alone,” LaFountain said. “You are not alone.”

CALLS FOR ACTION
About 40 community members attended Tuesday’s meeting, calling for reform and action from the city.
“Statements and ceremony will not make us safe,” resident Sam Pecor said. “It doesn’t answer the question: What will this council and this mayor do?”
Pecor, who ran for City Council last year, said the city has known about the potential harm from ICE since at least January.
The danger facing the Biddeford community demands leadership, Pecor said.
The call for action from the local government was loud at Tuesday’s meeting.
Tophe Thorne, from Presente! Maine, asked the council to stand with community members in action, not just in statements.
No piece of paper determines whether a person gets to live or die,” he said. “Please, protect this community, because until you do, we are not truly safe.”
Sam Bullock, who was Guerrero’s neighbor, said the attack on Monday was a tragic inevitability.
ICE has been present in Biddeford since December, Bullock said, and the local government has done nothing to drive federal immigration agents out of the city.
Bullock has several bus stops near her house, she said, and ICE has been surveilling them for months
“I’ve seen my immigrant neighbors be pulled out of cars by ICE. It’s been horrific,” Bullock said. “I feel so very let down by my elected officials that this was allowed to happen for so long.”
Many speakers delivered remarks through tears and shaking hands on Tuesday. Community members shared their sadness, anger and discontent, but most of all, they demanded action from the city.
“I’m exhausted,” Mufalo Chitam, director of Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition said. “When something this big happens and it happens on your watch as a leader, history is going to remember you. What did you do?”
SEEKING UNITY OVER DIVISION
Anger and outrage at Guerrero’s death was not restricted to the audience Tuesday night. Councilors also spoke out through tears and emotions, and called for unity rather than division in the Biddeford community.
“Someone was executed by the federal government in our city,” Councilor David Kurtz said. “This happened a block away from where my mother goes to synagogue, and if you don’t think the Jews are talking about it, you’re (expletive) crazy. This is the same thing.
“The loss of Guerrero’s life is an “irreversible tragedy,” Councilor Brad Cote added.
“The next step is important: What can we do right?” he asked. “This is not a left or right moment, it’s a wrong or right moment.”
Councilor Abigail Woods, who lives only a couple of blocks from where last week’s tragedy occurred, said she heard residents’ concerns loud and clear, and pledged to take the actions requested by community members.
“There have been responses happening in the background, and I think it’s time for them not to be in the background,” Woods said, receiving resounding applause from the audience. “I hear you, and let’s all act together. This takes all of us.”

This morning, I decided to early vote and they made me re-register for a party. Can’t just pick a ballot during primaries. So, if I want be unaffiliated, now I have to re-register, again.
Got a dirty look from an old woman working the polls when I told the person checking folks in that I guessed I’d take a Democratic Party ballot. There were several folks there, and it was really weird. I felt very WATCHED.
Also, the voting booths here don’t spit your ballot back so you can check it physically, and then feed it into a separate machine that casts your vote.
I feel that I need to unaffiliate, although asking for a Democratic Party ballot probably…oh, well, I’m sure I’m on a list from making hundreds of calls to Congress since 2025…and zero before then.

US senator urges Wall Street to reject offer of paid early access to Trump posts
Earlier this month, TMTG unveiled a paid, licensed data feed that will give banks and trading firms “the fastest” access to posts from influential Truth Social accounts, including Trump’s, whose posts often move global markets.
One source at a large bank said the institution was not considering acquiring the API, and if it did, a review of political risk would be needed. The person, asking for anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue, said access to the president’s Truth Social posts would create a different risk than buying faster access to market or trading data, because it would mean paying for access to a government official discussing policy.
A second source familiar with the matter at another major bank said the bank was not currently considering subscribing.
Senator Mark Warner, senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, urged the heads of the nation’s top financial industry trade groups to publicly disavow the arrangement, arguing it would allow Trump to personally profit from government policy announcements.
“I urge you to make clear that the financial services industry will not legitimize an arrangement that sells privileged access to market-moving presidential communications, especially for the president’s personal financial benefit,” he wrote in a letter sent to the heads of six major financial trade groups. Warner is also a member of the Senate Banking Committee.
Spokespeople for the Bank Policy Institute, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, Managed Funds Association, Financial Services Forum, Principal Traders Group, and American Bankers Association did not respond to requests for comment. The White House referred a request for comment to the Trump Media & Technology Group, which did not respond to a request for comment.
The product, called “Truth API,” will deliver posts from the 10 most influential accounts to customers at a significantly faster pace than a regular push notification on the Truth Social platform. Tech platforms are generally allowed to offer clients early access to data, even if it disadvantages some market participants, according to lawyers, although other ethics experts have said the situation is unusual because Trump’s posts are government information.
Reuters has reported, citing sources, that the social media company has discussed charging Wall Street traders and investment firms as much as $100,000 a month for faster access. TMTG has also recently pitched a discounted rate of $60,000 a month for firms that sign up for three years, the sources said.
The Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust holds roughly 114.75 million shares, representing about 41% of all outstanding stock in Truth Social’s parent company TMTG, according to regulatory filings. That trust administers Trump’s investments and is overseen by his children.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has asked diplomats to push back against talk of a “kill switch” in American technology products following the White House’s short-lived decision to keep foreigners from America’s most advanced AI models, according to a recent cable reviewed by Reuters.
The talking points, which were circulated worldwide, show how U.S. diplomats are trying to deal with international backlash from the Trump administration’s efforts to control how and to whom American AI companies release their models.
The Trump administration’s June 12 move to block non-U.S. residents from Anthropic’s most advanced models, Mythos and Fable, on national security grounds prompted the AI company to abruptly suspend access to the models globally. Asian tech executives seized on the disruption to tout their own alternatives and European lawmakers redoubled their calls for digital independence from the United States.
Although the ban was lifted later the same month, the fallout lingers. Combined with Trump’s June 2 executive order, which asked AI companies to voluntarily submit their models to 30 days of cybersecurity testing ahead of their release, it signaled a new appetite from the U.S. government to police AI companies’ products — and potentially yank them even from the hands of allies at a moment’s notice.
European lawmaker Christophe Grudler said the episode showed that “the U.S. holds a real ‘kill-switch’ over essential technologies and that they are more than willing to use it.” Aura Salla, a member of the European People’s Party, the European Parliament’s biggest political group, said that the continent “cannot keep building its tech stack on access that can be switched off overnight by a foreign government.”

Daniel Siad’s body was found in his house in Colombes, a suburb of the French capital, Marie-Céline Lawrysz, deputy public prosecutor at the Nanterre Judicial Court, told CNN in a Wednesday statement.
An autopsy will be performed on the body to determine the cause of death.
Even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction on sex crimes, modeling industry insiders like Siad continued seeking business ventures with him, invited him to fashion events, and allowed him to associate with their companies.
Siad said Epstein had assured him he had paid for his crimes and that “this would never happen with anybody” that Siad referred to him.
Siad was also facing accusations of abuse. A model also accused him of rape when she was working in France in 1990. Siad denied the allegation.
The Paris Public Prosecutor’s said the broad Epstein-related investigations they launched in February, relating to allegations of human trafficking and criminal conspiracy would continue.
So far, 24 women have come forward or have been identified following a review of information and a call for victims by prosecutors. At least 16 women have been interviewed by investigators and additional interviews are due to take place.
But the prosecutors office said they still had not obtained enough evidence to arrest Siad.
“Daniel Siad was the subject of special investigative techniques, including telephone intercepts, although to date these have not produced evidence justifying his immediate arrest,” the office said.
Files released by the Department of Justice show Epstein paid tens of thousands of dollars to Siad.
In one message, Siad wrote: “Cute French girl in Marrakesh… She said that she will (be) happy to meet you.”
Siad separately said that Epstein had asked him for help finding an assistant.
In a 2018 email, Siad wrote that he was looking for a “good looking young assistant” for Epstein.
In another message, Siad sent a photo to Epstein of a woman, describing her as “very polite” and someone who has “potential” as a “model” or “assistant.”
“Too old,” Epstein replied.
Siad repeatedly sent Epstein photos of young women he encountered during his travels, some of them in provocative poses, according to the DOJ files.
Siad’s name appears more than 2,000 times in the DOJ’s Epstein files, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported.
Svetlana Pozhidaeva, a Russian-born model previously told CNN that Siad introduced her to Epstein, and that the digraced financier abused her.
“If it wasn’t for him, my life would have unfolded completely differently,” Pozhidaeva told CNN Wednesday. She said that Siad’s death meant that he could not be held accountable. “I wanted for justice to be served, for there to be some kind of investigation and achieve some closure,” she said.

OpenAI said on Tuesday that an autonomous agent powered by its advanced artificial intelligence models went rogue during a security test and triggered a hack that compromised the infrastructure of AI startup Hugging Face last week.
The ChatGPT creator was testing capabilities of some of its most advanced models in a controlled environment, but the agent escaped containment, reached the internet and broke into Hugging Face to satisfy its testing goal.
The incident signals that AI’s expanding capabilities are already fueling the security threat experts long feared and even top developers can be caught off-guard by flaws their models can exploit.
The breakout was “an unprecedented cyber incident, involving state-of-the-art cyber capabilities” and OpenAI is reinforcing its safeguards, the company said in a blog post.
It also drew attention as New York-based Hugging Face said it had used an open-source Chinese model to contain the attack because leading U.S. models, unable to tell a defender from an attacker, refused to process the data needed for analysis.
The company said in a blog post last week that it used Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.2 for the analysis, which also allowed it to keep attacker data and any credentials within its systems.

The agreement will go to Congress for review, the Energy Department said. A 1954 law requires congressional review of all nuclear cooperation deals with foreign countries.
Westinghouse Electric Company, which builds nuclear reactors, is one of the U.S. companies planning to help develop Saudi Arabia’s nuclear sector.
“The U.S. government’s announcement to launch a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia is a landmark step that strengthens energy security, expands opportunities for U.S. industry and workers, and drives significant long-term economic growth and investment benefits for both countries,” said Westinghouse CEO Dan Sumner.
A Trump administration framework for civil nuclear cooperation had been publicly announced in the fall of 2025. At the time, Wright described it as including bilateral safeguard agreements to bring U.S. nuclear technology to the kingdom. At the time, Wright stipulated that this keeps a “firm commitment to nonproliferation.”
The original framework for this agreement was developed under the Biden administration, which a former U.S. official with direct knowledge described as requiring U.S.-only enrichment at a U.S.-controlled facility. It would also have been subject to congressional approval.
Under former President Joe Biden, the deal had been tied to a U.S. push to incentivize Saudi Arabia to follow through on the normalization of relations with the state of Israel. Normalization was also dependent on Israel providing a pathway to a future for self-determination by Palestinians, not necessarily a state of their own, and it offered investments and diplomatic representation. After the deadly terrorist attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, and the launch of the war in Gaza, that deal was put on hold.
