we the voters and especially the nonvoters gave him power
May 8, 2017
My experiences in Washington DC surrounding the election of Donald Trump in November 2016. Most footage was taken in the week prior, the night of, and the week after election night.
On Today’s Menu 11-Noon ET at trailmix.cc/chat:
• Luigi Mangione finally pleaded guilty to federal charges for taking out that UnitedHealthcare CEO, officially wrapping up a bizarre saga that somehow turned a corporate assassin into an internet folk hero.
• The FDA went ahead and upgraded a massive 1.5 million-carton egg recall to its absolute highest risk level, just in case you needed a reminder that your morning omelet is actively plotting against you.
• Trump shrugged off the USS Abraham Lincoln’s grueling 250-day deployment as “not nearly enough,” opting to keep exhausted sailors parked in the Middle East while casually threatening to claim the Strait of Hormuz as American real estate.
about the song from Highsnobiety’s 10 Protest Songs That Remind Us Why Voting Is So Important in the Trump Era Arcade Fire – “I Give You Power” ft. Mavis Staples
With the help of gospel legend Mavis Staples, Arcade Fire returned from a two year hiatus in 2016 to release this song as Trump rose to power. Like many Americans who didn’t like the way that politics were heading that year, the title of the song also feels rather helpless, but as with most of the band’s music, there’s a message of hope attached here too. Sure, we’re the ones who give politicians their power, but that means we’re also the ones who can take it away too.
Most Important Lyrics: “Who gives you power? Where do you think it all comes from? I give you power.”
Thanks PatD. Those voting numbers inspire me to gather up my stats on low propensity voters who’ve been showing up in big numbers for latest primaries. They are bedeviling pollsters who usually ignore them, think they’re going to be a huge factor in November. Heading over to Substack to stir the pot.
Colorado is a full mail vote state. All elections are mail in voting.
TRUMP ON CANCELLING ELECTIONS 🚨
Watch our analysis 👉 The Digital Diner Replay
Republicans worry their chances of keeping Congress are slipping away. Inside the Trump campaign plan to change that:
“President Donald Trump has finally given the green light to pour millions of dollars from his personal PAC toward boosting vulnerable Republicans in November, as some top campaign advisers privately acknowledge that Republicans’ chances of keeping control of both the House and Senate are dwindling,” CNN reports
“Trump’s political team is still debating what the final dollar figure will be, though one person familiar with the discussions floated $30 million in the first tranche.”.
They AI’d his tiny little fist in that election emergency photo.
pog, looks like the AI make-up man also air brushed away a few years on his face and the hand bruise.
Is the primary electorate shifting left, or has it simply become more volatile?
When low-propensity voters flood the zone, the old predictive playbooks go out the window. Here’s my morning Substack on what the August numbers really tell us about the road to November 👇
Love that map, PatD. Dems need more of those diagonal stripes.

today’s meme…
Ah Blue that picture brings to mind my grandfather’s hay-bailing parties. Neighbors showing up at their farms to help. Now that’s COMMUNITY!
meme #2…
yep, and just imagine trying to model a polling electorate based on dead people voting.
A retired pollster who taught me a lot told me this year’s voting pool is so bizarre and impossible to model he’d just gave his clients their money back!
just tinkered this together for today’s diner opening…

Trump’s 2024 grocery photo op now haunts Republicans in the midterms
*Speaking of ghosts, there will be ghosts of missing MAGAt voters.
Standing between tables piled high with fruit, beef, cereal, milk and other household staples at his Bedminster golf club on August 15, 2024, Trump blamed the Biden administration for sharp increases in groceries. The spectacle, complete with charts showing higher prices, was aimed at undercutting the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, and highlighted Trump’s central promise: he alone could tame inflation and lower the cost of living.
Two years on, higher gasoline and grocery prices are squeezing household budgets and turning the cost of living into the top issue for American voters. Voters now give Democrats a slight edge over Republicans in who they view as better stewards of the economy for the first time in nearly a decade, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.
Sheila Carney, a 68-year-old Trump voter, punctuated her frustration with an expletive as she unloaded $70 worth of groceries into her car outside a supermarket not far from Trump’s Bedminster club. The haul was modest: some meat, detergent and a 12-pack of iced tea.
Spent a good hour on the phone with a couple of scammers. They had bought some very good information about my accounts at a credit union. I kept them on the phone as a way to waste their time so they could not be talking to someone else. They pretended to be security from the credit union and a FDIC security agent. They went through their spiel going for the big prize, my savings account.
They wanted me to go to the credit union and take out the amount in cash. It would be in “marked bills” so they could nail the manager for selling cu customers information. They messed up real bad by confusing who was supposed to take the bills out. Finally they told me I was supposed to do that. I told them I was not going to the cu for a few more weeks. They should get someone else to do it.
I did hang up at this point and called the cu security phone and froze my checking, savings and credit card. New ones will be on the way in a day or two. The cu even has set up to use a safe word for calling in.
The crooks were good. They just failed to make the believable script. I am sure there are many who would fall for the scam and withdraw their savings or checking to hand cash to crooks.
I’ve heard people saying that a special Administration Task Force is out beating the bushes looking for a horse for him to appoint to the senate.
Did he get that sea shell thing worked out ok?

Troy Jackson Maine Scandal & Vivek Barber Ad
Maine Senate candidate Troy Jackson faces 1988 allegations while Vivek Ramaswamy fakes a barber ad and ten dollar Walmart diamonds trigger MAGA.
We are serving up a massive platter of political absurdity today starting with Illinois where Juliana Stratton just blew out the Democratic primary to replace Dick Durbin. Meanwhile up in Maine Senator Susan Collins is pearl clutching over Democratic candidate Troy Jackson and a 1988 Fort Kent police report involving a bar brawl. If we are going to drag up teenage fights let us not forget Donald Trump punching out his music teacher.
Speaking of manufactured politics Vivek Ramaswamy just dropped a slick new campaign ad featuring DJ the Barber from Ohio. It is a gorgeous production right down to the fake backstory about a guy Vivek has not talked to in a decade. It makes Amy Acton and her blue collar medical school roots look like the only authentic choice in the room.
We also cover the completely unchecked thug behavior from ICE agents using shock gloves and mace plus Trumps bizarre claim about taking over the Strait of Hormuz as a US territory. We wrap up with the ultimate indignity for the MAGA elite which is lab grown diamonds at Walmart. If all else fails we should just follow the British lead and vote for Count Binface.

Working as intended, but I’m pretty sure that type of engagement is exactly the problem
Anon, we can’t give up on polling. It just has to get better. Knowing what the public thinks between elections is part of a functioning democracy.

Trump told a political rally in New York state on Friday that after the US defeats Iran, “pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States”. “It’s true,” he added.
Iran on Saturday fired back at US President Donald Trump’s claim that he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz part of US territory, saying the crucial energy waterway it has blockaded “will remain Iranian”.
“The Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on X.
“This strait will only be closed and opened under Iran’s command.”

EXCLUSIVE: Two DHS Sources Confirm to Migrant Insider — The ICE Agent Who Pointed His Gun at a U.S. Citizen in Virginia Is Martin Lagunas
The Chicago-based agent was already identified on social media and by Unraveled Press. Now, two Department of Homeland Security sources have confirmed his name to Migrant Insider.
On the day Renée Good died, he’d posted about her death on his own Facebook page. The caption was one word: “FAFO.”
Lagunas, 40, was first publicly identified by Elgin-area ICE watchdog Ismael Cordová-Clough one week ago, and independently verified through voice and visual analysis — including a distinctive arm tattoo and a frayed “POLICE” patch worn across multiple encounters — in reporting by Unraveled Press. Migrant Insider’s DHS sources corroborate that identification.
Unraveled’s reported that Lagunas is a Chicago native who led an Enforcement and Removal Operations team first documented making arrests outside Chicago’s immigration court at 55 E. Monroe Street in May 2025, and later during protests outside the ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois — the epicenter of last fall’s Operation Midway Blitz demonstrations.
Mr. Lagunas probably thinks proximity to power makes him one of them and will keep him safe. It will not.

https://www.kbtx.com/2026/06/26/elon-musk-connected-company-buys-land-water-infrastructure-before-grimes-countys-spacex-tax-vote/
*Speaking of shell companies…
GRIMES COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) – Documents show WIT TECH LLC, a company connected to Elon Musk, purchased six parcels of land in Grimes County on May 27, 2026.
The acquisitions include critical water infrastructure, a three-acre parcel containing a pump station on the Navasota River, and a one-acre parcel consisting of the river itself.
This happened one week before Grimes County commissioners voted on June 4th to approve a 100% tax abatement for the SpaceX Terafab project, a deal worth up to $119 billion.
On May 5th, SpaceX announced it was potentially bringing its massive Terafab chip manufacturing center to Grimes County.
But while digging through public documents for our ongoing coverage of the Terafab project, we discovered something that happened between those two dates, something that had not been discussed publicly.
On May 27th, just one week before the commissioners voted, several major tracts of land were purchased in Grimes County. All of them by the same entity: WIT TECH LLC. In total, we found six parcels totaling more than 2,700 acres.
WIT TECH LLC is registered in Wyoming, but its principal office address is in Austin, Texas. The company’s registered agent is Registered Agent Solutions, Inc., based in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
While Wyoming law doesn’t require the disclosure of managers or members of an LLC, documents filed with the state by WIT TECH include signatures from Jared Birchall, a key figure in Elon Musk’s business empire. Birchall manages Excession LLC, Musk’s family office that oversees his vast personal fortune, private security, and day-to-day affairs. He also serves as a top executive across SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company, and other Musk ventures.
The company’s registered address is in Palo Alto, California, the heart of Silicon Valley and the headquarters of X-AI, another of Musk’s ventures. This address appears on multiple documents related to WIT TECH LLC’s formation and operations.
What we discovered about the land itself is particularly striking. When we mapped out the six parcels, a pattern emerged.
Three of the parcels sit directly on or adjacent to Gibbons Creek, a major water source in the area. But it was two small parcels, just one and three acres, that told the real story.
Documents show WIT TECH LLC purchased a three-acre parcel containing a pump station on the Navasota River. Right next to it, it bought a one-acre parcel that consists of the river itself and what appears to be a low dam. The deed explicitly references river pumps.
This wasn’t just land acquisition. This was a water infrastructure acquisition.
The strategic positioning of these purchases, particularly the acquisition of the Navasota River pump station and direct river access, suggests SpaceX was securing critical water infrastructure before publicly announcing the project to Grimes County.
In total, the six parcels span 2,796.5 acres with an assessed value of $3,216,460. However, the actual purchase price is unclear. The deeds show nominal consideration of $10, with the real price listed as “other good and valuable consideration”, a standard legal practice that keeps actual sale prices off public record.
One parcel, 433 acres, does not appear on the county’s public GIS map, no matter how we search for it.

Greg Abbott threatens Dallas, Houston airports’ grant funds over Islamic washing facilities
He also sent a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to refer the airports for federal investigations.
“These ablution facilities appear designed to single out one subset of the population for special treatment based on religion. That is illegal,” Abbott said in a news release announcing the grant reviews. “Both airports are government-owned facilities. The federal and state constitutions prohibit government from facilitating this sort of discrimination. Just as the government cannot favor the secular over the sacred, it also cannot favor one religious view over all others.”
DFW said late Friday that plans to install the religious washing station had been canceled.

Pentagon will build a training facility for Qatari pilots in Idaho
The U.S. military is moving forward with plans to build a dedicated facility in Idaho to train pilots from Qatar, an important U.S. ally in the Middle East, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Friday.
Hegseth, who made the announcement during a visit by Qatar’s defense minister, said the facility to be built at the Mountain Home Air Force Base would “host a contingent of Qatari F-15s and pilots to enhance our combined training, increase the lethality, interoperability.”

—1900—
OR,
THE LAST PRESIDENT
BY INGERSOLL LOCKWOOD
“That was a terrible night for the great City of New York—the night of Tuesday, November 3rd, 1896.
In less than half an hour, mounted policemen dashed through the streets calling out: “Keep within your houses; close your doors and barricade them. The entire East side is in a state of uproar. Mobs of vast size are organizing under the lead of Anarchists and Socialists, and threaten to plunder and despoil the houses of the rich who have wronged and oppressed them for so many years. Keep within doors. Extinguish all lights.”
And yet, at this moment when the night air quivered with the mad vociferations of the “common people,” that the Lord had been good to them; that the wicked money-changers had been driven from the temple, that the stony-hearted usurers were beaten at last…
The pens of many writers would not suffice to describe with anything like historical fullness and precision, the wild scenes of excitement which, on the morning after election day, burst forth on the floors of the various exchanges throughout the Union. The larger and more important the money centre, the deeper, blacker and heavier the despair which sank upon them after the violent ebullitions of protest, defiance and execration had subsided. With some, it seemed that visions of their swift but sure impoverishment only served to transform the dark and dismal drama of revolution and disintegration into a side-splitting farce, and they greeted the prospective loss of their millions with loud guffaws and indescribable antics of horseplay and unseemly mirth.
As the day wore on, the news became worse and worse. It was only too apparent that the House of Representatives of the Fifty-fifth Congress would be controlled by the combined vote of the Populists and Free Silver men…
As January wore away and February, slipping by, brought Bryan’s Inauguration nearer and nearer, the groups melted into groups, and it was only too apparent that from a dozen different points in the South 13and North West “Coxey Armies” were forming for an advance on Washington. In some instances they were well clad and well provisioned; in others, they were little better than great bands of hungry and restless men, demoralized by idleness and wrought up to a strange degree of mental excitement by the extravagant harangues of their leaders, who were animated with but one thought, namely, to make use of these vast crowds of Silver Pilgrims, as they called themselves, to back up their claims for public office…
These crowds of deluded people were well named “Silver Pilgrims,” for hundreds of them carried in hempen bags, pieces of silverware, in ninety-nine cases of a hundred, plated stuff of little value, which unscrupulous dealers and peddlers had palmed off upon them as sterling…
The inaugural address was not a disappointment to those who had come to hear it. It was like the man who delivered it—bold, outspoken, unmistakable in its terms, promising much, impatient of precedent, reckless of result; a double confirmation that this was to be the Reign of the Common People, that much should be unmade and much made over, and no matter how the rich man might cry out in anger or amazement, the nation must march on to the fulfillment of a higher and nobler mission than the impoverishment and degradation of the millions for the enrichment and elevation of the few.
Scarcely had the young President—his large eyes filled with a strange light, and his smooth, hairless visage radiant as a cloudless sky, his wife’s arm twined around his, and their hands linked in those of their children—passed within the lofty portal of the White House, than he threw himself into a chair, and seizing a sheet of official paper penned the following order, and directed its immediate promulgation:
Executive Mansion, Washington, D. C., March 4th, 1897.
Executive Order No. 1.
In order that there may be immediate relief in the terrible financial depression now weighing upon our beloved country, consequent upon and resulting from the unlawful combination of capitalists and money-lenders both in this Republic and in England, and that the ruinous and inevitable progress toward a universal gold standard may be stayed, the President orders and directs the immediate abandonment of the so-called “gold reserve,” and that on 18and after the promulgation of this order, the gold and silver standard of the Constitution be resumed and strictly maintained in all the business transactions of the Government.
“Gentlemen of the House of Representatives, I stand here upon my just and lawful right as President of the Republic, to give you ‘information of the state of the Union.’ I have summoned the Honorable the Senate, to meet me in this Chamber. I call upon you to calm your passions, and give ear to me as your oath of office sets the sacred obligation upon you.”
“Gentlemen of the House of Representatives, this measure upon which you are now deliberating”——
With a sudden blow that startled every living soul within its hearing, the Speaker’s gavel fell. “The President,” said he with a superb dignity that called down from the galleries a burst of deafening applause, “must not make reference to pending legislation. The Constitution guarantees him the right ‘from time to time to give to the Congress information of the Union.’ He must keep himself strictly within the lines of this Constitutional limit, or withdraw from the bar of the House.”
New Year, the New Century was born, but with the last stroke, a fearful and thunderous discharge as of a thousand monster pieces of artillery, shook the Capitol to its very foundations, making the stoutest hearts stand still…
In a few moments, when it was seen that the Chamber had suffered no harm, the leader of the House moved the final passage of the Act. The President was led away, and the Republican Senators and Representatives passed slowly out of the disfigured Capitol, while the tellers prepared to take the vote of the House.
The bells were ringing a glad welcome to the New Century, but a solemn tolling would have been a fitter thing, for the Republic of Washington was no more.
It had died so peacefully, that the world could not believe the tidings of its passing away.”

https://www.wsj.com/finance/trump-familys-world-liberty-financial-gets-preliminary-approval-to-launch-a-bank-dd518a2b
World Liberty Financial, the Trump family’s flagship crypto venture, said on Friday that its trust company has received preliminary conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to become a bank.
Upon final approval, World Liberty Trust will operate as a federally chartered national trust bank.
The charter will allow World Liberty to issue, redeem and safeguard USD1, the dollar-backed stablecoin that World Liberty launched last year. The stablecoin, whose reserves are currently custodied with BitGo, has a market value of about $4 billion.
The approval comes as President Trump’s $1.4 billion earnings from his memecoin and crypto ventures have become the biggest roadblock for passing a landmark bill that would create a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets.
The Clarity Act has stalled, driven in part by disagreements over ethics language that would prohibit government officials from profiting off digital assets. The bill is scheduled for a procedural vote on Sept. 15.

The Trump administration’s border wall project in Texas could require contractors to blast through part of Mariscal Mountain, a towering limestone ridge inside Big Bend National Park, according to federal maps, environmental groups and House Democrats.
The agency has not published detailed engineering plans saying how the road would be built, but lawmakers and environmental advocates say the rugged route could not be constructed without dynamite and extensive bulldozing.
