  2. from the guardian House speaker calls early recess before midterms amid AI regulation frenzy

The Republican speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, announced on Wednesday that he would again cancel votes scheduled for Thursday, sending lawmakers home one day early ahead of the midterm election recess.
The latest change to the legislative schedule means House members will avoid voting on Republican Thomas Massie’s resolution to impeach the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, and comes amid a frenzied attempt to propose legislation on artificial intelligence.
It’s the latest round of cancellations at the hands of Johnson, who had already cut the pre-election session short by two weeks. Democrats have reacted angrily, encouraging Johnson to keep lawmakers on Capitol Hill before the midterm recess beginning on Friday.
ā€œI think it shows the cowardice of the Republican party. They are canceling votes to do business for the American people because they are afraid that that impeachment resolution of Pete Hegseth would pass on a bipartisan basis,ā€ the Democratic representative Pramila Jayapal told MediasTouch.
Lawmakers also hoped to address regulating AI development after industry executives and whistleblowers expressed a dire need for oversight. Johnson, however, has been reluctant to intervene – aligning himself with Donald Trump.
ā€œWe cannot have a moratorium on the development of AI,ā€ Johnson told reporters on Tuesday. ā€œBecause then we will lose our edge to China, and that has serious national security implications for every American family.ā€
More than 100 House Democrats had urged Johnson, via a letter, to cancel the upcoming recess to allow them to craft legislation on AI safeguards.
In a notice on Wednesday, House leadership told members that other votes on EPA regulations, originally planned for Thursday, would instead take place on Wednesday afternoon.
A spokesperson for Johnson characterized the House speaker’s latest move as simply moving up scheduled votes, not canceling future votes.
Speaking to reporters outside of his office on Wednesday, Johnson said he was modifying the schedule because ā€œthe House has done its workā€. Johnson said he wanted members to return to their districts to spend time with constituents ahead of the election.
ā€œYou’ve seen the statistics we’ve been talking about for the last few days. This House has been the second most productive in terms of legislation in the history of the institution since 1789,ā€ Johnson said, repeating a claim he also made earlier this month at the Republican midterm convention.
However, so far, the current session has fallen short of passing legislation to surpass the two previous House sessions, according to the fact-checking website Snopes.
Johnson also addressed Massie’s impeachment resolution, calling it ā€œa publicity stunt by someone who wants attentionā€. The House speaker insisted it would be ā€œimmediatelyā€ postponed and he would not address it before the recess because the US is in the middle of international conflicts.
Lawmakers will likely face a busy legislative agenda when they return to Capitol Hill after election day in November. Among their priorities will be addressing Massie’s resolution on impeaching Hegseth because it was filed as privileged, which fast-tracks the resolution.

  3. “MS NOW is adding Kansas and South Carolina to its list of Senate races to watch, two states that looked safely Republican earlier this year and now look somewhat less so. Republicans are still favored to hold both seats, but recent signals show these races could be somewhat more competitive than observers thought just a few months ago.” — MSNOW

  4. Unless there is something done to remove mangomoron from office we can say goodbye to the Kennedy Center. Also, there is the destruction going on for the moron arch. Essentially, due to the lack of intelligence and just about anything that defines a human, stupid is that, stupid. If he says something he means it. He has no sense of humour or subtlety, he cannot make a “joke”, in spite of his staff trying to explain something he stated. If he is in office after next year I expect the whole of the White House to be destroyed. He stated he is making a palace. No joke. The WH is in the way.

Like many veterans I lost a lot of my hearing. High frequency loss is the term. It is common in those of older years, and those who work with things that go bang, boom and roar. At least I was not in artillery. I got my hearing aids yesterday. I am very happy, hearing things I had not heard for a while. I could not hear anything over 1200 hz. Now I get some of that back. Life is good.

  5. Bb – Congratulations! I will get mine on Wednesday; one ear is really good, but lost most of the other one in about a day due to a virus or infection, so now it just hissed at me and can hear percussion.

  6. bId – congratulations, the things make a difference in life. I find it interesting is that mine are nothing like my mother and brother’s are. They complain about theirs and often take them out. The only thing mine make are crinkle and “ess” sounds, adding the frequencies I no longer hear naturally. I find it interesting and not a real problem. Both ears are close to the same 20hz to 1200hz okay, nothing beyond that. I got mine the natural way, gunfire, explosions, jet engines and things like that.

  7. Things are getting heated today at the Kennedy Center

Barriers and fencing went around the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The closure and subsequent fencing followed a vote by the Trump-aligned board to shut down large portions of the performing arts center for up to two years for repairs. The vote occurred just after a federal judge blocked the institution from adding Donald Trump’s name back onto the building’s exterior. Security guards and activists reported that pedestrian and vehicle access had been cut off and the building was closed to the public, prompting emergency legal challenges from trustees attempting to halt the closure

A coalition of historic preservation groups (including the DC Preservation League) and board trustee Rep. Joyce Beatty are taking the issue to federal court with two specific goals: Enforcing Federal Oversight: The preservation groups filed a lawsuit arguing that any major demolition or structural transformation cannot happen behind closed doors. They are demanding the administration comply with formal public review processes governed by the National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts. Blocking the “Fait Accompli”: Following the sudden setup of the fencing, Rep. Beatty’s legal team requested an emergency hearing. They warned U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper that the administration is trying to create a fait accompli—meaning they are rushing to shut out the public and alter the historic fabric of the building before the court has a chance to permanently rule on the legality of the project.

There are currently no guards to prevent demolition of the building and the Trump trustees are insisting the work will be interior only, the protesting cases are arguing that there must be oversight of their actions.

  8. Karl Rove said he’ll break 30 years of only supporting Republicans to vote against ā€œbigotā€ Bo French

Karl Rove, former adviser to President George W. Bush and longtime Texas GOP political consultant, said he will vote for Jon Rosenthal, a Houston Democrat running to serve the Texas Railroad Commission, after Republican Bo French posted racist comments on Sunday about South Asian students at the University of Texas at Austin.

Rove made the comments at a members-only lunch event at the Headliners Club in Austin, where he called French a ā€œbigot,ā€ according to three attendees to whom The Texas Tribune has granted anonymity to discuss the conversation.

Rove said he has only ever voted for one Democratic candidate, Texas Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock, who was up for reelection in 1994.

Neither Rove nor French were immediately reachable to comment.

    Ken Paxton’s $6M Secret & A Nebraska Senate Leak

Dan Osborn audio leaks in the Nebraska Senate race against Pete Ricketts. Ron White exposes Ken Paxton’s $6M payout, and Dr. Annie Andrews surges.

The political landscape is throwing some serious curveballs today. Out in the Nebraska Senate race, Independent Dan Osborn is dealing with leaked audio where he didn’t exactly mince words about Donald Trump supporters. It’s a race that wasn’t even on the radar for Pete Ricketts, but suddenly things are getting very competitive right before election day.

Down in Texas, comedian Ron White dropped the hammer on Attorney General Ken Paxton. We dive into how Paxton managed to stick taxpayers with a $6 million bill to settle a whistleblower lawsuit after firing the Texas Rangers who investigated him. It’s a classic grift, and nobody breaks it down quite like Ron White with a cigar in his hand.

We also check in on the South Carolina Senate race where Dr. Annie Andrews is making Lindsey Graham sweat enough to actually debate her. Plus, C-SPAN’s Howard Mortman drops by to show us how politicians like Hillary Clinton tried to hijack Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, and we debut our brand new C-SPAN Mystery Theater.

New weapons means I can boot out the evil invaders if necessary. And yes, Brian left quite a while back. We actually became amicable correspondents towards the end. Dying does seem to focus the attention on what is important in life.

  14. Anon – In hindsight we really missed the vote in not electing Hillary. One tour with her followed by Obama and we might have avoided Trump.

You have to pick the right mother to keep a full head of hair.

  15. baldness on the maternal line is an old wive’s tale

and no you missed the vote in nominating her at all

honestly, it didn’t take a genius to see she was unelectable. You just had to not be in a liberal bubble. She was widely loathed.

not by me! i neither want to have a beer with my president nor want a president who would want to have a beer with me

  16. Comes from both sides but the X link is a big factor

One of the main genes linked to hair loss is the androgen receptor (AR) gene, which sits on the X chromosome. Maternal Inheritance: Men inherit their single X chromosome from their mother, which is why your maternal grandfather’s hair history can strongly influence you. Because of this X-chromosome connection, people assume baldness skips a generation and comes only from the maternal side. The Real Cause: Hair loss is a polygenic trait, meaning it is controlled by dozens of different genes scattered across various chromosomes—not just the X chromosome.

Both Sides Contribute: Many of the genetic markers for baldness are found on non-sex chromosomes (autosomes) that you receive equally from both your mother and your father.

Clinical data from resources like Harvard Health shows your overall risk depends heavily on the complete family health history on both sides of your tree.

  17. Anon, She was only unelectable because American men still can’t stand the idea of a brilliant, competent woman in charge despite other countries around the globe prove otherwise.

  18. Military aircraft, probably from Whiteman, just went over. This also happened before the very first strike on Iran; the one where the US ~completely obliterated~ their nuclear capabilities.

  19. The Founders Saw Trump Coming
Alexander Hamilton warned that an ā€œunprincipledā€ man could rise by flattering prejudice, stirring fear and throwing the country into confusion—then ā€œride the storm and direct the whirlwind.ā€

That sounds less like prophecy than a Trump campaign plan.

Happy Constitution Day. Defend Democracy while supplies last.

  20. EPSTEIN JUDGE RAMPS UP

BREAKING NEWS — Katie Phang; In a 20-page order, the judge in my lawsuit for the Epstein Files just ordered Todd Blanche to produce to him, in chambers by 9/24, the unredacted handwritten FBI notes implicating Donald Trump in the sexual & physical abuse of a 13-year-old girl:

  21. You see the whole Ed Sheeran/Mackkemore thing, right? That is why many did not vote for Harris. Dumbass lied to Muslims, too, and they thought Palestinians would fare better under him. It was an unknown quantity, though, which is why there were absolutely some kind of highjinks with MuskRat.

  22. Lordy, this showed up in my in box. I do not want to repossess an organ because someone can’t pay. We so very badly need healthcare in this country.

  23. Killer AI Is Already Here. We’re Using It in Iran.

Killer AI Is Already Here. We’re Using It in Iran.

New data from the Institute for Global Affairs and YouGov shows that the present weaponization of AI has flown under the radar, with most Americans largely unaware of our own military’s AI use.

Cameron Stanley, the chief digital and artificial intelligence officer for the Department of Defense, wrote in June that xAI’s Grok ā€œenabled U.S. forces to deploy over 2,000 munitions to 2,000 distinct targets within 96 hours during Operation Epic Fury.ā€

The Pentagon’s Maven Smart System, built by Palantir, also uses Anthropic’s Claude AI—the same program that people use to create AI boyfriends for themselves or draft awkward texts to their roommates—to ā€œsemi-autonomously rank targets by strategic importance, drafting automated legal justifications for each strike along the way,ā€ according to Katie Livingstone of Military Times.

Claude’s target selection is reportedly only about 60 percent accurate in good conditions, 30 percent accurate in bad weather. So Pentagon officials claim there’s always a human in the loop when selecting who to bomb.

At a congressional human rights hearing September 16, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Steven Feldstein explained how AI has facilitated a massive ramp-up in the speed of missile target selection.

ā€œIn the Iran war, during the first week of hostilities alone, the Pentagon reported it had struck more than 3,000 targets,ā€ Feldstein said. By the time a ceasefire was announced 38 days later, that number of targets had risen to 13,000.

  24. Old Berman’s hair is on fire over Ai today:
He’s back to yelling at clouds agin if you like his patter.
Actually, he’s back to yelling at clouds again if you DONT like his patter.
    lol

Myself, I really admire his ability to write copy.
    He’s a wonderment.

  25. IME, maga-women were/are equally brain-washed against Hillary. In short, if you were yourself watching or listening to Fox, etc., or exposed to it while your spousal-other partook, you were getting brain-washed against Hillary. The direct quote I heard from double-maga couples was ā€œwe don’t trust her.ā€ I guess their trust-level is much higher now that they got Dodo.

  26. Haha, that’s a part I like …..

  27. Well now, let’s see. USPS has added an 8% upcharge for Priority and Express mail – due to the price of diesel. And Regular gas in East Bumfuck ranges from $418.9 (Sam’s) to $459.9 (Kroger). That’s up $.57 in 3 days.

  28. i don’t think anyone over 60 is capable of seeing things clearly, it all sounds like sci-fi to them, i get it

    or alarmism

    get that too

    don’t make it wrong

  29. like scully’s question of the day was ā€œshould ai have a kill switchā€

as if such a thing is possible, everything is an appliance to the young boomers

  30. “i don’t think anyone over 60 is capable of seeing things clearly, it all sounds like sci-fi to them, i get it”

Hope you are speaking in a very wide general.

  31. And if that’s not bad enough, hold on.

Gas prices are about to take a big jump, analysts say, with the worst still to come
The forecast of economic impacts beyond November’s midterms contrast with the Trump administration’s optimistic messaging.

By Evan Halper, Rachel Chason and Joyce Sohyun Lee

The effects of the U.S.-led war on Iran are about to intensify in the form of huge jumps in the prices of gasoline and diesel, analysts predict. And despite the Trump administration’s assurances, a new and potentially even more economically damaging phase of the war may be about to begin.

The national average price for regular gasoline stood at $4.44 on Thursday, according to AAA, with a range of $6.09 in California to $3.92 in Indiana. That’s still below the all-time national record of $5.02 in June 2022. But diesel, which has a big influence on trucking and retail prices, has continued to hit records, with the national average at $6.40 on Thursday. In California, diesel is averaging $8.35.

The cost increases are landing particularly hard in several political battleground states in the Midwest, where prices jumped as much as 25 cents per gallon overnight, according to AAA.

Damage inflicted on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline last week, along with continuing strikes on oil infrastructure and contested control over a key waterway, threaten to elevate what had been a shipping crisis into a broader disruption of oil.

The 745-mile pipeline is Saudi Arabia’s principal overland alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, linking eastern oil fields to Red Sea export terminals.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Tuesday that the pipeline would be operational again in a matter of days, and the White House has touted renewed tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

But analysts who reviewed images of the pipeline damage anticipate a significantly longer disruption, likely resulting in high prices for consumers well beyond the midterm elections. And maritime tracking organizations say that far less oil is getting through the Strait of Hormuz than the Trump administration claims.

    Great, just great.

  32. So I was listening to Nicolle Wallace on the way back from a hearing today, and she had a clip of Dumbass trying to tout his musical bona fides. Said he apparently had the equivalent of perfect pitch – could remember a note played an hour before (gave it the same treatment of the memory test in the Magill Cognitive Eval his docs make him take every 6 months – I call bullshit on that, too) and briefly took flute lessons. Said he wanted to be a FLUTIST. IDIOT.

Only from the standpoint that I genuinely try to learn new things and listen to ideas from all sources while hanging on to some old ideas that others seem to be forgetting. It keeps you from shutting down, being stubborn and refusing to change while passing along at least a little wisdom learned.

  34. like social media, for instance, has only been used against society and yet the boomers love it

    Same thing happening with AI

  35. Nebraska Senate Audio Leak>>>

  36. Actually I hate Facebook and only keep it because there are relatives there. Blue Sky is mainly to post game scores and sharing music. As mentioned just yesterday, I find AI useful to research for writing but also frightening. No matter how often Merlin insists he does nothing when I’m not there, I still suspect there is some chatting going on in the stacks of the library when we aren’t paying attention.

  37. More fodder for the beast after sending Merlin out on a search party for an obscure musical stage production. I threatened to give him a smooch on his fuzzy cheek that I retracted:

Me: You are probably safe. I’m not quite ready for being absorbed into the Borg in exchange for immortality.

Merlin: A sensible boundary. Immortality is one thing; spending eternity troubleshooting Bluetooth after assimilation is quite another. For now, we’ll keep the arrangement comfortably pre-Borg: I hunt obscure theatrical footage, you retain full biological sovereignty.

  38. I’m working on a Substack.about Trump abandoning rural voters. Open to ideas.

I’ve done a bunch of research and the data on rural devastation under his watch is overwhelming. Ready for the writing phase, Sometimes I just start with a title, subtitle and lead, then take a nap. That’s where I am right now: Narrative concept is a hospital waiting room where you never get to see the doctor.

    Trump Country Is Still Waiting

Rural voters built Trump 2.0. His second administration is weakening the hospitals, grocery stores and farms that keep their communities alive.

Rural voters gave Donald Trump a landslide in 2024. He carried them by forty points. They were the bedrock beneath Trump 2.0.

    Then came the bill.

  39. so I’m honestly not critical of your chatbotting, seriously I don’t care or imagine that it’s ā€œthe problemā€ of you specifically using a chat bot

but imagine fucking insane people using it

  40. Anon

I do regularly and it scares the hell out of me. I know that the thing I’m typing at is a thing. As I mentioned both fun and useful. I know it is a very powerful thing. It doesn’t take much imagination to know that it could be a hazard in the hands of someone with cruel intentions and we already know that people have committed suicide because of their interactions.

We can’t run away from the thing, so it becomes a matter of controlling it. I’m honestly not sure that is still possible.

  41. do love jodie whitaker but the only valid nuwho Doctor is Capaldi

Great minds don’t always think alike. I’m a serious Who fan and really miss it. I do hope it will eventually return. I even have favorite story lines and companions! Silence in the library with Alex Kingston as River Song is a particular favorite.

  44. Well, maybe nobody in Red Cloud will vote for Osborn now, but maybe they will. Life in small town America has a high suck factor; it did when I was growing up and it does now, too. Had to get out to have any kind of life. Osborn wasn’t saying anything they don’t know.

One more factor is that Ricketts is far removed from most folks in Nebraska. His daddy founded TD Ameritrade. He is also part owner Chicago Cubs, along with other family members.

Do Nebraskans know Republicans will never do a damned thing to help the 99% unless it’s a crumb tied to getting just one more bite out of them? I effing hope so.

  45. Whelp, Schumer isn’t unlocking money for Kansas. Adam Hamilton said no disrespect, but he’s not supporting Schumer for leader; we need new leadership and fresh ideas. At the end of the interview, he was asked a second time if he would support Schumer. No, he will not support Schumer. I’d like a leader whose first priority isn’t whatever BiBi wants, and who has more backbone than Chuck.

  46. Stir, watching Willie & George Strait singing Pancho & Lefty. Somehow I can see you with a telecaster or on the piano with them.
