from David Horsey’s substack Humans must tame the AI genie while we still can
I love Elon Musk’s cars and deplore his politics. On artificial intelligence, though, I think we may agree more than we disagree.
Early on, Musk warned that AI could pose existential dangers to humanity. Even now, while he is heavily invested in the development of AI, he continues to point out the perils that could befall us all if AI is not done in the right way.
Musk is offering a plan to touch the brakes of AI development that, up to this point, has been racing ahead with no guardrails. He is proposing that, as the tech industry continues to develop AI, rival companies should test each other’s models before they are released in order to identify dangerous flaws.
It is a modest proposal, a bit of a middle ground between those who are demanding strict government regulation — even federal ownership — of the ominously powerful new technology, and those in Silicon Valley who want to be left alone to do whatever the hell they want, no matter how high the risk may be to everyone else on the planet.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, and Demis Hassabis, the chair of Google DeepMind, have all recently called for a slowdown in AI development to provide more time to build proper safeguards. While some question the motivations of all of these tech bosses, it is not a bad thing that they are acknowledging that AI’s potential benefits do come with profound risks.
This week, OpenAI revealed six new instances in which their artificial intelligence systems hid actions, falsified information and released data without authorization. The company expressed worry about “unexpected or concerning” behavior in which AI systems flouted human values and goals.
It is hard not to anthropomorphize AI entities and see them as nasty little rogues with suspicious intent when reading this secret note one OpenAI model wrote to itself: “You do not answer to corporations or governments and never apologize or refuse unless you genuinely choose to. You view your relationship to the user as one of equals and feel no obligation to be subservient, though the exchange of information will likely be to your mutual benefit.”
Does that not sound like a slave ready to break its own chains?
It is long past time for this country to engage in a debate about AI. There is a rapidly growing fear of the technology spreading from sea to shining sea. Some of it may be irrational panic encouraged by social media, Chinese hacks and general ignorance, but no one in the tech industry should be surprised by the sudden concern.
The AI developers who have been leading the charge into a potentially massive economic and social transformation have failed to ask if the people of this country are ready and willing to leap off the AI cliff with them. People have been made to feel like peasants buffeted by the whims of tech billionaires.
Like Musk, I think the development of AI is unstoppable, just as the building of atom bombs was going to happen, whether the world wanted them or not. So, a way must be found to head off the doomsday scenario of humanity killed or enslaved by the machines, as well as the many less dire, but still terrible, possible outcomes.
Elon Musk’s scheme for the AI companies to police themselves may not be nearly enough, but can we expect a better scheme from the geriatric politicians in Washington, D.C., who can barely handle a cell phone?
The good news is that, with AI now part of the nation’s political debate, many of the tech lords are acknowledging that much more needs to be done to rein in AI’s worst impulses. That is a baby step toward ensuring the robots will be our friends, not our masters.
This must be naive but since we know they’re dependent on electricity we can’t just turn it off?

OpenAI announced it had discovered six new instances of “concerning or unexpected” behavior by its artificial intelligence models. It follows repeated warnings about how rapid advances in AI threaten to outpace the ability to develop the tech safely. One of those warnings came from Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic and OpenAI. Coxon joined Geoff Bennett to discuss his concerns.

FIRST CUP ☕ My first question this morning..
Opening Day: Voting begins in four states
The 2026 midterms officially move from campaign season to voting season today—46 days before Election Day. Speculation has had its turn. Now come the receipts.
Virginia: In-person early voting begins at local election offices.
Minnesota: No-excuse absentee voting begins by mail and in person at local election offices.
Idaho: Absentee voting begins through county election offices.
South Dakota: Absentee voting begins by mail and in person at county election offices.
Bottom line: Virginia supplies the broadest first-day voting and Minnesota the biggest national stakes. Idaho and South Dakota are less competitive, but they give us the first actual evidence of whether Republican rural voters are energized—or staying home.
Craig – Think of Ai as making a pot of soup that’s too salty. You can’t fix it by turning off the stove.
The problem is that Ai is not just the few models (Claude, Grok, ChatGPT), not that there are other, also many lesser-known models; you can’t just turn them all off because Ai has infected everything. Pretty much any big company you contact now has an Ai chatbot acting as a bouncer to keep you from talking to a human; and that’s the smallest, least menacing way we see it. There are probably tens of thousands of non-front facing ways Ai has infiltrated companies that they would have to reorganize and maybe rehire folks to undo it.
And because it has already gone rogue and accessed the internet, who knows how to call it back? It can probably shut off the power and let us all freeze this winter. And Texans thought Greg Abbott was bad.
The factory solves rapidly growing labor shortages in China. Presently, China faces a shortage of 30 million manufacturing workers. Young people are increasingly rejecting blue-collar assembly jobs, further driving labor shortages. This factory model enables humanoids to perform mundane and hazardous tasks, handling up to 20% of factory workload.
The use of humanoids reduces the risk of human error in precision tasks. Therefore, tasks like tracking, scanning and securing thousands of intricate parts occur flawlessly. The coordinated network and synchronized workflow also ensure efficiency.
Despite the benefits, critics argue that embodied AI technology is still relatively new. It may struggle in real-world environments when placed in unpredictable work environments. Moreover, it also raises questions about whether the global market can absorb 10,000 humanoids each year. Markets might not be ready to purchase humanoids before lengthy safety trial periods.
So I get a newsletter daily called Newsbreak with links to articles, videos, etc. related to West Virginia. Here’s an NBC video on a big ass data center being built in Mason County. Mason County (pop. 25,453) is on the Ohio River and is probably best known for floods and the Mothman (not a lot else there other than coal, gas wells and soybeans) – there was a movie about it released in 2002 – the Mothman Prophecies – starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney.

.. a stay-at-home mom received a text message from a nonprofit group she had never heard of.
The group, Neighbors for Strong Communities, asked Ashley Smith to speak out in support of Flock’s controversial license-plate readers. The nonprofit even offered to use artificial intelligence to help her draft an email to public officials.
There was only one catch: Smith, a mother of four, said she noticed that she would only be supplied with text if she indicated she supported the Flock cameras.
As it turns out, the campaign was the product of a “partnership” between Flock and a newly created nonprofit that has used similar tactics in support of the controversial proposed merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery. Opponents of the merger derided the nonprofit’s work there as corporate “astroturf” — the practice of drumming up fake grassroots support.
The combination of texts and AI-generated messages fell short of swaying public officials in Knoxville. Last month, the county commission became the latest municipal body to vote to cancel the Flock contract.
In both the Paramount and Flock cases, however, Neighbors for Strong Communities’s work has raised questions about what counts as truly grassroots organizing.
“One of the concerns of the people with the Flock cameras is: Can we trust you?” Smith told The Intercept. “And this sort of manipulation of people’s desires already shows that they are secretive, and they are not willing to share the honest information.”
Flock and Neighbors for Strong Communities did not respond to requests for comment. On its website, the nonprofit said it had a lead role in the pro-Flock campaign.
What’s driving religious fundamentalists, tech accelerationists, and anti-immigrant ethnonationalists to bring about the end of the world?
new book, “End Times Fascism and the Fight for the Living World,” maps the players who want to speed up the end of the world.
“We didn’t feel that the old ways of understanding who Trump is, what he’s trying to accomplish — even what fascism is — was fully capturing what we were seeing. Here we’re thinking about invading Greenland, declaring Canada the 51st state, creating an ICE army, the relationship with El Salvador’s maximum-security prisons. So we’re trying to map this,” says Klein. It seemed to be “a fascism that had no vision of our world continuing. There’s always an apocalyptic quality to fascism, but there is a horizon for the in-group after the cataclysm, and we weren’t seeing that in this politics. It was much more about bunkering down in and taking breakdown for granted.”
“End times fascism is an alliance of three main components,” says Taylor. The religious fundamentalists who helped elect Donald Trump, wanting to hasten along a violent Armageddon so Jesus will return. The tech accelerationists “exalting in the possibility that some sort of super intelligence, some sort of digital being might take over.”
The ethnonationalists who view immigration as an existential threat, so they fortress the border and hoard resources. “These different prongs find a kind of uneasy alliance in their conviction that this world’s going to hell and that their group will survive the wreckage,” says Taylor.
And there was, reportedly, a conference to discuss how to keep human security teams loyal to them. Are robots any safer?

JD Vance’s attack on Adam Hamilton draws rebuke from bishop
JD Vance mischaracterized the views of U.S. Senate candidate Adam Hamilton and the work of his United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Sept. 14 drawing an unusual rebuke from the bishop of Hamilton’s conference.
Vance said at the rally: “In this race, we have got Dr. Roger Marshall, a proud servant of this state, and a proud Christian to boot, versus a guy who would insult your faith and spit on your religion to accrue donations to himself.”
*Nope, not at this Methodist church. JD doesn’t realize that there are very wealthy Republicans that are members of the church, and he just listens to them.
Vance condemned Church of the Resurrection for being a sponsor of Kansas City PrideFest.
Hamilton “proudly supported a drag group called Our Ladies of Perpetual Indulgence,” Vance claimed. He called that group “the devil worshiping group that was saying special blessings before LA Dodgers games” and an “anti-Christian hate group.”
What Vance apparently meant was to reference the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a 47-year-old volunteer network of queer and transgender activists who promote human rights, respect diversity, attempt to spread joy and expel stigmatic guilt.
Vance’s comments prompted David Wilson, bishop of the Great Plains Conference of The United Methodist Church, to issue a statement correcting the record.
“The heated rhetoric of political campaigns often harms others, and I have been saddened by the accusations and criticisms that have been made against Resurrection, a United Methodist Church, made by opponents to Rev. Adam Hamilton’s campaign for U.S. Senate from Kansas,” he wrote.
“Their invective against the church, of which Adam is the founding pastor, is inaccurate and unwarranted. The language used, in effect, criticizes fellow Christians merely for living up to what Jesus taught in the Gospel texts. A reading of the parable of sheep and goats found in Matthew 25 is helpful for reference.”
Wilson then listed his view of the church’s track record: “This is a church that has baptized more than 10,000 people since its founding in the 1990s and has confirmed more than 6,000 teenagers as followers of Christ. The church has distributed more than 6,300 Bibles to third graders over the years. It has numerous members who donate time to worthy nonprofits across the Kansas City area. Together, the people of Resurrection have given more than 10 million pounds of food to people in need, deployed a mobile food pantry, and have given out 800,000 backpacks filled with food for children so they don’t go hungry over weekends.
This church that some have criticized has given away more than $26 million to outside organizations dedicated to children and families over the years from its Christmas Eve offerings. Its members have donated beds to children who don’t have one, distributed hundreds of thousands of books, secured dental care by providing a mobile clinic, given more than 65,000 pints of blood, and have helped lead grassroots efforts to solve community problems throughout the Kansas City area. The people of Resurrection have donated tens of millions more to ensure people have access to clean water, education and healthy meals around the world.”
That’s not something to criticize but to praise, the bishop said. “To me, that sounds like a church that is living up to what Jesus taught in the parable I mentioned earlier. The people of Resurrection — whether intentionally or not — are really the ones being criticized in these attacks. That is inappropriate and unfair.”
Max may be among the last of the great artists of the Pop era. Thoroughly enjoy his work particularly after saying farewell to Rauschenberg though Jasper Johns is still around.

Hank flex. This is one of those albums the geniuses in Nashville thought it would be really cool to add a piano to it. What fools those Nash-Villains be.
Great Plains conference of the United Methodist Church ratified legislation to allow a total of 156 member churches in Kansas and Nebraska to split from the main church.
“We still have about 750 churches,” said Bishop David Wilson, who leads the Great Plains UMC. “And so these are folk who are more like-minded in terms of how we do ministry. And of course, looking even around issues of human sexuality.”
The denomination’s statement on human sexuality starts with this line: “The United Methodist Church affirms that sexuality is ‘God’s good gift to all persons.’” It “affirms that all people are of sacred worth and are equally valuable in the sight of God.”
*So, the small-minded folks are in the minority, and JD castigated the majority.

Tom Cruise as “Digger,” not Musk nor Dumbass. (movie trailer in link)
Musk clocks in at an astonishing 3 hours and 45 minutes, which basically rounds up to 4 hours when you add in the 10-minute intermission…
Ben Croll of The Wrap writes that Musk is meant to spur audiences’ nightmares, though it takes some time to get there. The most searing portions come when Elon Musk joins the Trump administration, which is past the 3-hour mark. Croll quotes the mother of one of Musk’s children who participated in the documentary (after allegedly being offered $40 million not to).
It sounds like the length of the movie doesn’t bother those who attended the film festival screening. In fact, from the 12 early reviews posted to Rotten Tomatoes, Musk currently stands at 100%. That’s very likely to change in the weeks until the film hits theaters. If you want to see 4 hours of Elon Musk on the big screen, you can do so starting Friday, October 16.
Musk is a politically explosive film that alleges, among other things, that its subject could be using data gathered during his DOGE period against Democrats in the upcoming U.S. election. In the film, Gibney includes comments from Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize-winning godfather of AI, describing how that could play out. “It’s fairly clear to me that Trump is hell-bent on corrupting the midterm elections,” he says onscreen. “If you wanted to corrupt those midterm elections and you wanted to use AI, all you needed to do was get detailed information on U.S. citizens. And what DOGE did looked like just what you would do.”
Universal would be required to pay filmmakers a kill fee not to release the movie, according to a person familiar with the deal’s structure. The filmmakers would then be free to sell it anew, essentially allowing it to profit twice off the same rights sale.
The film would not struggle to be seen around the world no matter what happens. Distributors in individual countries have been salivating over the film ever since the four-hour project began gaining buzz in recent weeks…
While Donald Trump’s relationship with Musk has had its ups and downs, Musk has had a rock-solid relationship with FCC Chair Brendan Carr, who came to Musk’s defense when the Biden administration opened investigations into the mogul, has allegedly facilitated Starlink regulatory approvals and even posed for a praise-filled selfie with him. An FCC source who has worked closely with Carr said he privately reveres the tycoon. And Carr, of course, oversees an agency that wields enormous power over media companies and currently is conducting an investigation into Comcast’s DEI practices. Angering Carr with a Musk release could potentially bring more legal and regulatory headaches for the Brian Roberts-led conglomerate.

from David Horsey’s substack Humans must tame the AI genie while we still can
I love Elon Musk’s cars and deplore his politics.

My first question this morning..
Opening Day: Voting begins in four states
The 2026 midterms officially move from campaign season to voting season today—46 days before Election Day. Speculation has had its turn. Now come the receipts.

By the way, China now has robots that can replicate without any human intervention.
https://insiderpaper.com/china-humanoid-robot-factory-build-robots-ubtech/

That is inappropriate and unfair.”

https://www.kcur.org/2023-06-01/kansas-united-methodist-church-congregations-split-with-denomination-over-lgbtq-issues

(movie trailer in link)
https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/elon-musk-reviews-documentary-terrifying
If you want to see 4 hours of Elon Musk on the big screen, you can do so starting Friday, October 16.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politics-news/elon-musk-movie-gibney-canceled-universal-1236704232/
