This is Luis. On Friday, January 27, 2017 he’ll be 21 years old. He came to this country when he was 2 from the land of his birth, Mexico. He’s undocumented. His mother was a young widow with no chance for a future for herself and her son so like many thousands of others, she came to America seeking a better life. When her temp visa expired she began her life as an illegal immigrant.
She worked hard to provide a good life for Luis. At one point, the parents of her deceased husband asked her to send him back to Mexico for a vacation. They said they would pay for and arrange it. It seemed harmless, so she sent him. I don’t know how the arrangements were made, but once he was there they refused to send him back. His mother, in desperation, went back to Mexico and retrieved him. She then had to get across the border again. She tells a story about one of her crossings when she fell into the river and nearly drowned, like it’s about someone else. But she and Luis made it back to the U.S. and she moved to another state and started over.
There are jobs for illegal immigrants. All you have to do is be willing to work like a slave for people who don’t care about bending the law. She worked in a tourist heavy city at a Mexican restaurant. She worked 12-14 hour days, 6 days a week. She was very good and made excellent tips, which was her pay! But this is how she gave her son everything she could, including living in a nice apartment, in a good neighborhood. One of her brothers watched Luis when she worked. When she wasn’t at work, she devoted all of her time to her son.
After the death of her husband, she never thought she would remarry but she met a young man who ate at her restaurant. She spoke almost no English and he didn’t speak Spanish, but it was one of those “Their eyes met…” kind of things. Eventually, when Luis was 8 or 9 they were married. Most people think that if you marry an American you’re automatically a citizen. Maybe it was that way once, but not now.
After about a year they had a son, and Luis was thrilled to have a baby brother. They had gotten hooked up with an immigration lawyer but before anything could proceed the husband had to fix some problematic tax issues and he hired a friend of a friend who was supposed to know what he was doing, to work on it. After over a year and thousands of dollars, it was clear that he was not going to be of any help. Eventually the tax issue was resolved and then they had to spend a few thousand more dollars just to get her officially registered with immigration and put on a very long waiting list to even have her status looked into. Then the recession hit and they lost everything. So Luis and his mother, his new father and baby brother started over again.
Luis is an amazing young man. He’s never been in any trouble, got good grades in school and played football like your average American boy. He doesn’t smoke, drink or use drugs. Thanks to some immigration reforms by President Obama, he was able to get a drivers license and legally work, so he got an after school job when he was about 17. He did so well in high school that he graduated with one of the best scholarships his state offers to pay for college tuition. When he applied at his local community college, he discovered that his undocumented status meant that he couldn’t use the scholarship. He’s been paying his own way through school ever since, a few classes at a time. He also works full time and is now a supervisor at the company he went to work for in high school.
He’s very interested in politics and business. He followed this election closely and even got his little brother, and now little sister, involved in discussions. But of course, he couldn’t vote.
These are the people Donald Trump wants to round up. These are the people Donald Trump wants to keep out. These are the people Donald Trump calls criminals, rapists, terrorists and thieves. If he builds his wall, who will take all the menial, low paying jobs and work slave hours to make some rich person richer? These are the stories that nobody knows about, unless they take the trouble to find out!
I highly recommend a movie called Under the Same Moon. It came out in ’08 and it’s a beautiful story of an undocumented mother and her son. The story is told from both their points of view. The little boy is amazing. If you want to learn about it you can check IMDB here.
Funny but true: When the movie came out, Luis bought his mother the DVD for Christmas. On Christmas morning, when he opened his presents, he found the same DVD from his mother to him.

One last thought before the sun rises here…trump is creating a new societal class system. Long gone is the romantic thought of the middle class of the baby boomers along with the titles of ‘working class’ or ‘elites’. Now there is the ‘supporter class’ and ‘hillary lovers’ (perceived as ugly, American women). Your worth as an American is in the class in which you reside. You are either a supporter or not.

Meanwhile, trump cannot turn his back on this evidence he was going to use anyway in case he was unsuccessful in winning the electoral college…or otherwise known in tech circles as voter cherry picking by kushners komputer kids (kkk).

That plan was more centrist, keeping ObamaCare’s taxes and letting states choose to keep the existing healthcare law if they wanted.
Paul’s plan includes a tax credit of up to $5,000 per person to use as part of a Health Savings Account to pay for medical care. That tax credit appears to be larger than those offered in other Republican healthcare plans.
The plan would abolish many of the central elements of ObamaCare, including the mandate that everyone has coverage. It would eliminate the minimum standards for which health services an insurance plan must cover, which Republicans argue would allow for cheaper, less comprehensive plans.

As it seems, the floater is descending into his own world, an alternate universe which is a very dark and horrible place, quite different from reality. He is actually attacking that world in our world and it is not going well. The guy is quite, to borrow from a headline, Bonkers. The question is when will the Republicans, big R people vs little r trumpians, take the reins of power away from the loon?

There was talk of “rage” when he saw his inauguration was really tiny and the protest really big. What rage will happen when he cannot get his way. There are limits to what he can do, even in the executive branch. Will he do a public melt down? The clips from his interview last night show a man quite literally off in his own universe. He had no clue what was really going on.
It will be up to someone with power in the R group to go over and sit in one of the back rooms of the WH and have the “we have a new WH for you that is bigger than this little place. It has a big desk just for you” talk and lead him to the limo and a ride up to Bethesda and a nice padded room.

I’m going to have to narrow my reasons to attack Trump or I won’t have a life. The man is decidedly a deeply injured soul who only feels human when being constantly petted by others. As a result his actions are all motivated from a deep need for approval from a fawning crowd. He doesn’t read and gets virtually all information from TV and hangers on. This makes him the natural victim of the right wing nut jobs from places such as Faux Spews, National Enquirer, Breitbart, Drudge and every conspiracy story that comes down the pike.
So what are the biggies for me. (I’ll know they will be different for others, so you get to fight those fights.)
Environment (Destroy that and it’s adios for all of us)
Voter Suppression (If we don’t take back state houses in 2018, gerrymandering after 2020 census could destroy fair elections for the foreseeable future)
Torn between Health Care & Immigration. Have to think about this
Given the GOP Congress in need of a willing signer for all their idiocy, I don’t hold out hope for an impeachment, but it could well be that his mental problems mean Trump is doing too much global damage and a 25th Amendment solution might be necessary.

Solitary confinement is one of the cruelest forms of punishment and Manning’s remark about Obama does show some introspection into the course of Obama’s presidency. Obama was humane in commuting Manning’s sentence for eventual release in May. Not much different than Bergdahl and the prisoner exchange. Both military footballs from our warrior past. trump is living in the past as his future is so dark…unlike Obama where the future was so bright? We all needed sunglasses.

bet if a study could be done looking back at his statements made in the campaign of various charges of lies, rigging polls, crimes, cheating etc one would find that very same day a story about to be released of him doing that which he charged others of. ironically he alerted us to his own behavior (but the media failed to fully cover these exposures). perhaps this is a compulsion on his part, a self-imposed mea culpa form of confessional to cleanse himself of his own sins.

Last night was Burns Night and today is Australia Day. and Hugh Jackman is on the cover of Empire. India has outlawed use of disposable plastic. All things considered, great week for fans of the British and their former dominions.
Sadly, I believe there is fraud and vote rigging in all of our prez elections, but most humans still believe in the majority rule. The electoral college used to match the popular vote in most elections of the past. nixon claimed to be a victim of voter fraud in 1960 and decided to go full frontal on fraud in ’68 and ’72. reagan was a cheater, too, in debategate — famous thieves of the repug party. For me? Anything repug is a detriment to education and birth control….two important things in a woman’s life.

If I Were Mayor de Blasio I would respond to Mr Trump’s move to cut-off federal funding to his city because it is a ‘sanctuary’ city by slicing all special police protections provided his Trump hotel residence. If Mr Trump demands to know why, it is because the citizens of NYC are providing their share of the funding to provide for the totally adequate housing facility in DC and the security that drapes said facility. He should move himself and his family forthwith to that facility aka the White House.

The State Department’s entire senior management team just resigned
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s job running the State Department just got considerably more difficult. The entire senior level of management officials resigned Wednesday, part of an ongoing mass exodus of senior foreign service officers who don’t want to stick around for the Trump era.
Tillerson was actually inside the State Department’s headquarters in Foggy Bottom on Wednesday, taking meetings and getting the lay of the land. I reported Wednesday morning that the Trump team was narrowing its search for his No. 2, and that it was looking to replace the State Department’s long-serving undersecretary for management, Patrick Kennedy. Kennedy, who has been in that job for nine years, was actively involved in the transition and was angling to keep that job under Tillerson, three State Department officials told me.
Then suddenly on Wednesday afternoon, Kennedy and three of his top officials resigned unexpectedly, four State Department officials confirmed. Assistant Secretary of State for Administration Joyce Anne Barr, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Michele Bond and Ambassador Gentry O. Smith, director of the Office of Foreign Missions, followed him out the door. All are career foreign service officers who have served under both Republican and Democratic administrations.
Kennedy will retire from the foreign service at the end of the month, officials said. The other officials could be given assignments elsewhere in the foreign service.
In addition, Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security Gregory Starr retired Jan. 20, and the director of the Bureau of Overseas Building Operations, Lydia Muniz, departed the same day. That amounts to a near-complete housecleaning of all the senior officials that deal with managing the State Department, its overseas posts and its people.
“It’s the single biggest simultaneous departure of institutional memory that anyone can remember, and that’s incredibly difficult to replicate,” said David Wade, who served as State Department chief of staff under Secretary of State John Kerry. “Department expertise in security, management, administrative and consular positions in particular are very difficult to replicate and particularly difficult to find in the private sector.”

At least six journalists were charged with felony rioting after they were arrested while covering the violent protests that took place just blocks from President Trump’s inauguration parade in Washington on Friday, according to police reports and court documents.
The journalists were among 230 people detained in the anti-Trump demonstrations, during which protesters smashed the glass of commercial buildings and lit a limousine on fire.

The logic may be a bit strained, but here goes. To force Mexico to pay for a wall it did not order there will be a 20% tax added to goods entering the U.S. So, 20% is added to whatever is purchased from Mexico that Americans will have to pay for the goods. A few goods are autos and auto parts. Some parts are shipped to Mexico for building into autos, or for partial build and returned to the U.S. Other parts maybe electronics. The world of manufacturing is based on parts and construction or build in one or more countries.
So an electronic board is built of parts created in many countries. Some parts maybe be built in one or more countries. A board or part may go country to country to country for parts or work added then returned to the first country for more work. And, after several trips for parts and build it could be put into another electronic product or a larger part, like a car. Which itself maybe the final result of multiple countries.

When I first began working in a newsroom, Mary Richards was my example of how to act and dress. Most days, I walked to and from work. Unlike Mary, I had no car, so my clothing had to be comfortable and take a beating. I wore tailored blouses with bows, vests, and slacks most of the time. Sometimes dresses in the Diane Von Furstenberg style. Mary was my guiding light, because I couldn’t dress like Woodward or Bernstein. Just wish I’d had a boss like Lou Grant.
Mary Tyler Moore was perfect. Never have I read a bad word about her. Dick Van Dyke must be grief-stricken.
