In a list of priorities, generally speaking, that which is listed number one usually is more important and weightier than number two or at least equivalent thereto. However, that doesn’t seem the case with some in regard to the first two amendments in the Bill of Rights.
Lately, it seems the abridgment of the right to speak out in assembly to express grievances and read books of one’s choice has taken second place to the assurance one can keep and publicly wave around an AR15 in schools, grocery stores, courts, capitols and churches.
Even the will of the people can be disregarded and democracy diminished by simply shouting “Ban guns, not books” slogans.
Tennessee House Goes Full Authoritarian, Expels 2 Black Lawmakers for Protesting Gun Violence | Vanity Fair
BTW that TN legislator comparison of the peaceful protests against guns to the Jan6 siege on the capitol is as illogical and nonsensical as MTG’s comparison of you-know-who to mandela and jesus.
Pogo – thank you. I was stationed at Columbus AFB, Columbus, Mississippi in the early Seventies. Yeah, I saw where the enema nozzle is inserted. Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama are in the same mentality, probably even worse today than back then. I served (USAF) right after Civil Rights acts were made law the White citizens were still working on what that meant. They have had fifty years to ferment and that is what we are seeing now with all the hate and white supremacist, facist, and just general self-loathing. What they have left is gerrymandering to ensure the their place in power. And, there is only one minority left to attack LGBTQA.

Justin Pearson’s Speech Ripping Tennessee Republicans Viewed 2.9M Times (msn.com)
note: this was broadcast on a fox station. the cult gets to hear from the real world for a change. Justin Pearson vows return after 2 Democrats expelled from state House following gun protest | News | fox13memphis.com […] Jones had his hearing first. “It’s clear that he wants to be expelled. That’s why he refers to all of you as a dishonorable house. We all saw the video of what he did,” asked Republican Gino Bulso of Brentwood during the hearing. Jones responded, “What he was essentially saying was that Justin is an uppity Negro. How dare he point at the speaker and call a lie? A lie? … How dare he come before this body and not bow down?” Jones was the first expelled. Then, it was Johnson’s turn. The Republican House majority did not get the 66 votes needed, racking up just 65. Then, it was Pearson’s turn. Pearson had a crowd of Memphis supporters in both galleries, but it was not enough for the 69 votes in favor of expulsion. People in the crowd and in the hallways protesting said they were in shock. “Hearing that because some of our reps dared to speak the needs of the people instead of the GOP agenda they’re trying to push forward, they’re gonna expel them for that, for a simple decorum rule? I have to say it, it’s the end of democracy,” said one woman. Despite the decision, Pearson said he will be running for the seat again.… Read more »
My dad moved in 1940 to charleston from Birmingham to work at the Naval Shipyard and so from ’48, when i was born (early on a frosty morn), thru the mid sixties i spent a lot of time in automobiles going back and forth from Charleston to Birmingham–across SC, Georgia, and half of Alabama on pre-interstate highways. One of my most indelible enduring memories was of service stations along the way with their 3 rest rooms labled: MEN, WOMEN, and COLORED.
Separate but equal. I looked into the “COLORED” restrooms and it was as if they had hired a professional to come in and see just how filthy and disgusting they could make them. Education was not always in schools

here’s one of the songs mentioned and the translation
A prince saw a little book standing there
in the corners of the store
took it quickly to look through it
read it before bed too
but with a thousand terrors.
Book, book, book bold,
from the corners of the store.
King spoke, I suppress it,
booklet from the store,
The little book laughed: O happiness!
Then they read me from behind (in secret)
and that never hurts.
Book, book, book bold,
booklet from the store.
And the good prince forbade it
little book from the country,
but little book suffered no need,
came off like warm bread
went from hand to hand.
Book, book, book bold,
Book stays in the country.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/07/politics/senate-hold-military-nominations/index.html
“Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville has single-handedly blocked the nominations to protest new Pentagon policies ensuring service members have access to reproductive health care following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade last year. Tuberville first threatened to put a hold on DOD nominees in December, and followed through in March.”
“ Tuberville’s objection has thrown a wrench in what is usually a routine Senate maneuver in which hundreds of military nominations are confirmed all at once under a process known as unanimous consent.”
“Among the more than 180 nominations pending right now are some of the military’s most critical positions, including the commanders of 7th Fleet, in the Indo-Pacific, and 5th Fleet, which is part of Naval Forces Central Command. It also includes the military representative to NATO, at a critical time with the war in Ukraine.”
“…the fight is further politicizing the military, something that Tuberville and other Republicans in Congress have repeatedly raised as a concern in recent hearings with defense officials. Senators should be asking questions of the political appointees, Kuzminski said, not involving uniform leaders who “do not set the policy.”
I know they won’t do it this weekend… being Easter. But I sure hope those 2 expelled black representatives organize a massive march for the following weekend.
Yup… the gopp have left the dog whistle behind and are now going full on bullhorn…
RR – I firmly believe that the corner on youth voting was turned. They are our hope to overcome the white supremacists/facists.
So it goes.
Yeah, the Tennessee cracker barrel is about to get schooled. They have lost any young voters they may have had. And, by not expelling the white rep, their dog whistle became a tornado siren. This is a power grab and they will pay for it in every, subsequent election.
Hi-ho
I wonder what entity or who it was who managed to bring about every “filling station” in the south to cough up the extra added expense of a 3rd restroom. Selling ice cubes to the Inuit

Abbott because he’s trying to take away money from our public schools and give them to these private Christian schools…” “Abbott has thrown his support behind parents’ rights and “school choice,” a catchall term for policies that allow parents to send their kids to a school different from their assigned public school.” “The governor’s push for education savings accounts is part of his efforts to give parents more rights and to fight what he calls a “woke” agenda in public schools.” “Many rural lawmakers remain wary of such policies — even as supporters dangle additional money for their schools.” “School leaders — already wary that such a dramatic expansion of school choice would drain their limited financial resources — and some parents in Tyler and the surrounding communities say Abbott is driving a false narrative. There is no indication of a “woke” agenda in the region’s public schools, they say.” “At least one rural school leader is going as far as saying that if an education savings account policy becomes law, taxpayer dollars could be used for true indoctrination at religious schools.” “The legislation also includes restrictions on classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity and lays out a parental bill of rights.” “Schools in Texas are largely funded based on the number of students who attend the school. Losing a student to a private school means lost revenue. And those funding losses could be particularly devastating for small school districts with less… Read more »

Russia’s “merchant of death” offered Donald Trump asylum in Russia this week, saying he believes the former president’s life is in danger if he remains in the United States.
