Sunday Serendipity

I am a fan of anything Rhiannon Giddens sings. Yesterday, I ran across this video of her singing Wayfaring Stranger. It doesn’t get any better.

Enjoy, Jack

  1. jack, for those who favor bass-baritones here’s another wayfaring stranger plus some poignant photos with a “we are all immigrants” theme.   (ahh, memories of sean and his immigrant t-shirt campaign.  we miss you, liberal lardass)

“President Trump was wrong,” Pence told journalists and their guests at the Gridiron dinner, an annual white-tie event in Washington DC.

“I had no right to overturn the election, and his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

    […]

“What happened that day was a disgrace,” Pence said on Saturday. “And it mocks decency to portray it any other way. For as long as I live, I will never, ever diminish the injuries sustained, the lives lost, or the heroism of law enforcement on that tragic day.”

  4. Pence unloaded on Trump at last night’s Gridiron Dinner in DC.

AP: Pence says Trump ‘endangered my family’ on Jan. 6

“President Trump was wrong,” Pence said during remarks at the annual white dinner attended by politicians and journalists. “I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

He also took a not-so-veiled shot at Tucker:

“Make no mistake about it, what happened that day was a disgrace. And it mocks decency to portray it any other way.”

“History will hold Mike Pence accountable for his failure to testify about Donald Trump‘s criminality, and hold Trump responsible to the rule of law. Pence wants it both ways. He doesn’t want to testify but to on the right side of history. He is weak.”

This was beautiful.  I wasn’t all that familiar with her and this made me go looking for more. Thank you.

Fell in love with Birmingham Sunday

  8. Pence says or does the correct thing if and only he has no other choices. It appears not to be his natural proclivity.
Happy Spring Break from Austin, Texas this week! Hope to see some Texas bluebonnets.

  9. Never heard of her, Jack… thanks for that introduction… she’s great!

    I agree with John Dean.

  10. Renee
I first saw her perform as part of the ensemble called The North Carolina Chocolate Drops an old timey string band group exploring African American contributions to old traditional music. She plays several musical instruments and has a beautiful voice too.

  11. One thing about being old and retired is I get to sleep in late and put booze in my last cup of coffee for the day. Since I’m living by myself I get no grief from anybody about it.
Yesterday was a shot of Jamison, cream and sugar. today some of that orange flavored french brandy, with just a little tequila to add spice. Not much of the later, you can do too much of the tequila.

  12. About Pence, I’ve known a lot of religious folks like him. He only follows his beliefs when it is to his advantage. BTW, if you won’t set down and tell your story under oath, why should I believe anything you have to say.

  13. The Gridiron Clubis the oldest and among the most prestigious journalistic organizations inWashington, D.C.

So did any of those prestigious journalists ask, “if you won’t set down and tell your story under oath, why should I believe anything you have to say? ”
Or was it all just a bunch of shuck and jive done to slap each other on the back and bragg about how important they all are?
    Jack

  14. Until Pence is willing to put it under oath, I don’t want to hear fricking thing he has to say. And if you were one of the journalists at that dinner I don’t care to listen to your opinion either. You are part of the problem, not part of the solution!

‘Ratings were dropping’: Fox News reverses course and allows host to report on Dominion lawsuit – Raw Story – Celebrating 19 Years of Independent Journalism

    […]
On a broadcast weeks earlier, Kurtz revealed that he had been banned from covering Dominion’s defamation allegations against the company for allegedly misleading viewers about Democrats stealing the 2020 election through voting machines.
But on Sunday, the host was allowed to air a four-minute report that predominantly featured the network’s side of the story.
“I’m not sugarcoating the allegations in this $1.6 billion suit or the fact that Fox has taken a hit in the court of public opinion,” Kurtz claimed. “Now the period under scrutiny began as Fox’s ratings were dropping after the network projected that Joe Biden had won Arizona.”
Kurtz suggested Fox News was worried about losing viewers who supported former President Donald Trump.
“Fox challenges that the Dominion claim of 1.6 billion in damages is inflated, given that a private equity firm bought three-quarters of the company five years ago for $38 million,” Kurtz reported. “But the fact that some people in the chain of command privately dismissed the fraud claims as nuts or outlandish or insane doesn’t necessarily mean Fox couldn’t cover and comment on the extremely newsworthy spectacle of a president saying an election was stolen.”
“That’s why this case is a major test of the First Amendment,” he concluded.

  16. Jack – single life can be done well.  I got a cat.  I bought a sailboat.  I got another boat.  I got another cat.  I got a bigger boat.  I got a dog.  We live well.

The only problem with being single is trying to find enough people to give the leftovers of a stew for six and I ate only for one.

You can listen to whatever you what, whenever you want.

  17. Just another “i missed the bus” old critter musing. Melissa McCarthy, you know her of course?  I did not.  When “George Santos” (maybe real name, may not be real name) said he would like to see her at the Oscar event I go, who the hell is Melissa McCarthy?  Turns out she is famous actress, and even more interesting she is person on YouTube advertisement that I find funny.  Well, ain’t that the s’s!  I am so happy to turn over the necessary time to know entertainment people to the youngsters.  Go Gen something!

“Silicon Valley Bank Chief Executive Officer Greg Becker sold $3.6 million of company stock under a trading plan less than two weeks before the firm disclosed extensive losses that led to its failure.”

    https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/mar/11/silicon-valley-bank-weaken-risk-regulations-svb

“In 2015, SVB President Greg Becker submitted a statement to a Senate panel pushing legislators to exempt more banks – including his own – from new regulations passed in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Despite warnings from some senators, Becker’s lobbying effort was ultimately successful.”

“Touting “SVB’s deep understanding of the markets it serves, our strong risk management practices”, Becker argued that his bank would soon reach $50bn in assets, which under the law would trigger “enhanced prudential standards”, including more stringent regulations, stress tests and capital requirements for his and other similarly sized banks.
Becker insisted that $250bn was a more appropriate threshold.”

“The stock market may be closed this weekend, but crypto markets trade 24/7, so this is where we’re seeing the minute-by-minute market reaction to Silicon Valley Bank’s (SIVB -60.41%) collapse and potential rescue this weekend. Crypto values collapsed starting Thursday when the bank run began, but the sentiment has changed in the last few hours.”

  19. Breaking News – Feds back all funds in the SVB bank failure.  It did not take too long for those who make important decisions made the decision to go beyond the cheap pay guarantee. This is not supporting the stupid, this is companies like Roku to make payroll next week.  I am sure they were in that particular bank for a reason, but the bank failing was not because of them.
