Rally ’round their flag, boys. Rally ’round the flag!

“Show your standing! Come from your offices, your homes, your schools and universities. Come in the name of peace. Come with Ukrainian symbols to support Ukraine, to support freedom, to support life. Come to your squares, your streets. Make yourselves visible and heard. Say that people matter. Freedom matters. Peace matters. Ukraine matters…. All as one together who want to stop the war.”

Three ring circle jerk. LOL. Kimmel is my No. 2 in late night and is very close to Colbert for No. 1.

But in other news, Steve Ratner just mentioned something that really got my attention. 90% of the neon gas we get comes from Ukraine. Vegas aside, one of the critical uses of neon is in the manufacture of microchips. Now I’m not familiar with neon gas production but I assume it’s an extractive process from the air around us. Sounds like neon production could be an emerging industry in the US. There’s certainly a huge demand for microchips in the US and the world. Might not be the next Apple stock but sure seems like a good investment risk to me.

patd,  sounds like that neon gap is a great opportunity for an enterprising chemical industrialist to grab a huge chunk of the world market demand for neon, and apparently for krypton and xenon as well.

Karma, Dumbass style.  Wapo.

By Jennifer Rubin

Defeated former president Donald Trump is notorious for turning on allies if they fail to show sufficient loyalty. When his first attorney general, Jeff Sessions, properly recused himself from the Russia investigation, Trump berated him until he resigned. Even Supreme Court justices whom he appointed felt his wrath when they did not produce his desired outcome. And who can forget all the people Trump claimed he barely knew when they ended up in trouble or criticized him

But disloyalty can come back to bite you. On Wednesday, Trump yanked his endorsement from staunch supporter Rep. Mo Brooks for a Senate seat in Alabama, faulting Brooks for not wanting to dwell on the 2020 race. Brooks struck back with a damning written statement.

“The only legal way America can prevent 2020’s election debacle is for patriotic Americans to focus on and win the 2022 and 2024 elections so that we have the power to enact laws that give us honest and accurate elections,” Brooks wrote. “President Trump asked me to rescind the 2020 elections, immediately remove Joe Biden from the White House, immediately put President Trump back in the White House, and hold a new special election for the presidency.” Twisting the knife, he added, “As a lawyer, I’ve repeatedly advised President Trump that Jan. 6 was the final election contest verdict and neither the U.S. Constitution nor the U.S. Code permit what President Trump asks. Period.” Oops.

This account, if true, is invaluable to the Jan. 6 committee and to any criminal investigation given the difficulty in proving Trump’s “criminal intent.” If Trump asked Brooks to rescind the election, as Brooks alleged, and if Trump understood from Brooks that there was no legitimate way to overturn the election, Trump’s risk of being charged with obstruction of an official proceeding (i.e., the electoral-vote-counting session), attempting to defraud the United States or seditious conspiracy increases dramatically.

***
Trump might come to regret pulling the rug out from under Brooks. Sometimes you want to keep friends close — and potentially dangerous witnesses closer.

Indeed.

Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Good advice.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has ended globalization as we know it, says the head of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager.”

“The CEO, whose company manages $10 trillion in assets, predicted that Russia’s isolation will “prompt companies and governments worldwide to reevaluate their dependencies and reanalyze their manufacturing and assembly footprints.”

“Longer-term, I believe that recent events will actually accelerate the shift toward greener sources of energy in many parts of the world,” Fink wrote.”

Hmm – following the lack of news about a person who was to be discharged from a hospital a few days ago.  Lots of people are waiting, with bated breath, for whether to cheer or boo.  I would not be surprised that a few office pools are starting with day and time.

A couple of pundits are working the angle that he is looking for his exit now that his wife has announced she is an insurrectionist.  It is plausible.

Putin Doesn’t Realize How Much Warfare Has Changed

The Russian president’s obsession with World War II is hindering his invasion of Ukraine.

Otto von Bismarck once said that only a fool learns from his own mistakes. “I learn from other people’s,” the 19th-century German chancellor said. Astonishingly, the Russian army is repeating the past mistakes of its Soviet predecessor. In April 1945, Marshal Georgy Zhukov, under intense pressure from Stalin, sent his tank armies into Berlin without infantry support. Vladimir Putin’s forces not only made the same error; they even copied the way their forebears had attached odd bits of iron—including bed frames—to their tanks’ turrets in the hopes that the added metal would detonate anti-tank weapons prematurely. This did not save the Russian tanks. It simply increased their profile and attracted Ukrainian tank-hunting parties, just as the Soviet tanks in Berlin had drawn groups of Hitler Youth and SS, who attacked them with Panzerfausts.

In his opinion piece today at WaPo Michael Gerson has a particularly notable line regarding the repube party of today.

Republicans have gone from arguing about the intent of the Founders to reproducing the night’s lineup of questions from Tucker Carlson.

Add that to Kimmel’s 3 ring circle jerk line and you’ve summed them up nicely.

patd – My suspicions are he went through room temperature a day or so after disappearing.  Perhaps another general dies in a firefight?

OM – there is a saying that the generals are always fighting the last war.  There are serious concerns that KGB agent Putin has some mental disease or something which is making him do stupid.  What is mentioned occasionally is that many/most Russians have close relatives in the Ukraine.  KGB agent Putin is forcing his military to attack their own families. That is not a good way to get a lot of “kill the enemy” blood and guts fighting in your troops.

Something has been going on in the background about U.S. veterans who served during the Vietnam War, the Vietnam era. This is not in country, but during the time period.  Just as we talked about the WWI veterans, then the WWII veterans and the Korean veterans, the VA is now changing the discussion about the Vietnam era.  We are now Vietnam veterans.  The time has passed for the public to identify those who served in combat regions and those who served outside of the countries, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand.  Now whether you served in the European region, the countries such as Japan, Guam, stateside or Johnston Island, you are a Vietnam veteran.  Getting old.

That Bismarck article  mentions that the Russian Army’s communications are being hacked by by the Kraines.
And that the Kraine’s have very good sniper teams .
That would explain 6 dead Russian generals.
This reminds me of Spain in reverse .
3,000 Americans have joined the fight , and over 30,000 from all over the world.
If these numbers are true .  Franco is rolling somewhere in his grave.
The idea that 3,000 Americans  are in country is a big deal , given we have a lot of vets who have a very deep understanding of  how a smaller force fights a larger force.
Remember all those Russian kids are draftees.

Ukraine’s Three-to-One Advantage

It’s not technology or tactics that has given Ukrainian fighters their greatest edge.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/03/american-volunteer-foreign-fighters-ukraine-russia-war/627604/

As Jed sat across from me in the empty restaurant, with his shoulders hunched forward over the table and his palms cupped around the tea, he explained that since arriving in Ukraine at the end of February, he had been fighting as a volunteer along with a dozen other foreigners outside Kyiv. The past three weeks had marked him. When I asked how he was holding up, he said the combat had been more intense than anything he’d witnessed in Afghanistan. He seemed conflicted, as if he wanted to talk about this experience, but not in terms that could turn emotional. Perhaps to guard against this, he began to discuss the technical aspects of what he’d seen, explaining in granular detail how the outmanned, outgunned Ukrainian military had fought the Russians to a standstill.

One of the world’s biggest petroleum companies more than doubled its profits in 2021 as global demand soared. Now, it’s doubling down, and investing tens of billions more into oil production this year as prices soar.
Saudi Aramco, a major oil and gas company owned and managed by the Saudi royal family, announced it made $110 billion in profits last year, a 124% increase from 2020, according to the company’s annual financial statement released on Sunday.
And that was before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
