  1. Survivors Gather to Remember Those Lost at Pearl Harbor 80 Years Ago – NBC New York

A few dozen survivors of Pearl Harbor are expected to gather Tuesday at the site of the Japanese bombing 80 years ago to remember those killed in the attack that launched the U.S. into World War II.

    […]

They will observe a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. (12:55 p.m. ET), the same minute the attack began decades ago. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro is expected to deliver the keynote speech.

The bombing killed more than 2,300 U.S. troops. Nearly half — or 1,177 — were Marines and sailors serving on the USS Arizona, a battleship moored in the harbor.

Several women who helped the war effort by working in factories have come to Hawaii to participate in the remembrance this year.

Mae Krier, who built B-17s and B-29s at a Boeing plant in Seattle, said it took the world a while to credit women for their work.

“And we fought together as far as I’m concerned. But it took so long to honor what us women did. And so of course, I’ve been fighting hard for that, to get our recognition,” said Krier, who is now 95. “But it was so nice they finally started to honor us.”

This year’s ceremony takes place as a strong storm packing high winds and extremely heavy rains hits Hawaii, flooding roads and downing power lines. Navy spokesperson Brenda Way told The Associated Press in an email Monday that she has heard of no discussion of canceling the event because of the storms.

  2. fading memories of another WWII vet on another front

    the hill:

The late Sen. Bob Dole wrote in his final op-ed published after his death of the difficulty accomplishing politically much without compromise as the nation remains steeped in division following the last two presidential elections and infighting within both the Democratic and Republican parties.

In a piece for USA Today, Dole wrote that “during my years in Congress, Democrats and Republicans were political combatants, but we were also friends.”

“I learned that it is difficult to get anything done unless you can compromise — not your principles but your willingness to see the other side,” Dole said.

“Too many of us have sacrificed too much in defending that freedom from foreign adversaries to allow our democracy to crumble under a state of infighting that grows more unacceptable by the day,” he added.

In October, Dole started to draft the piece with pen and paper. He completed it on Nov. 23, less than two weeks before his death early Sunday. He was 98.

Study: Test detects signs of dementia at least six months earlier than standard method | TheHill

A study released Monday concluded that a self-administered test detected signs of potential dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, at least six months ahead of the standard testing method, suggesting the exam may help doctors diagnose patients sooner.
The self-administered gerocognitive examination (SAGE) test picked up on signs of cognitive impairment months earlier among patients than the often used mini-mental state examination (MMSE), according to the research published in the journal “Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy.”
    […]
The SAGE test intends to track the patients’ thinking processes and to spot cognitive impairment symptoms beyond normal aging.
But the exam itself is not diagnostic and cannot determine whether a patient has Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, and scientists recommend patients take the test into their doctors’ office for analysis.
Patients who develop mild cognitive impairment do not automatically develop Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia.
The SAGE test would signal “significant” cognitive decline if a patient’s score falls two or three points within about 12 to 18 months, Scharre said.
As a self-administered test, the SAGE test can be taken in any location, including at home or in waiting rooms, and therefore, does not take up physicians’ time.

The paper version of the SAGE test is free. The digital version is available through BrainTest.

  4. but let’s not dwell on that. stephen reminded us last night of other things worrisome to remember

Ignoring the six-figure death toll in this country, Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Ron Johnson continue to downplay the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic. In Colorado, a Sheriff’s office expressed regret after tweeting a photo purportedly showing Santa Claus applying for a concealed carry permit.

  5. https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/06/media/devin-nunes-congress-reliable-sources/index.html

“…Nunes would have ascended to what is widely considered to be the most powerful chairmanship in the House of Representatives.
And all he had to do was stay in Congress.
But Nunes decided to discard the opportunity. Instead, he announced that he had joined Donald Trump’s social media venture, Truth Social, as its CEO. Nunes said he was “humbled and honored” to have been entrusted with the job.“

Orange Adolf’s latest grift. Devin is an idiot for buying into it, but good riddance.

  6. My own little dementia test is if I can remember why I walked into the kitchen at least 3 out of 5 then I’m ok.

  7. Just saw that Fred Hiatt died yesterday. That’s by most accounts a great loss for the Washington Post and its readers. Big shoes to fill.

  8. LOL Sturg. You should market a paper and digital version of that test – sell it on Etsy. An index card with 5 boxes for a check mark or X – so you can remember whether you remembered why you were in the kitchen the last 5 times you forgot why you were in there.

  9. Years ago I knew a couple of Navy veterans of the Pearl Harbor attack.  The big thing for them was they were the start of WWII for the Pacific Fleet.  They were in for the entire war.  They have long since passed.  The WWII vets are pretty much gone now.

  10. All my paternal uncles and one maternal one were South Pacific. My dad, youngest, joined late from working at the shipyard and narrowly missed the big show.  At the cute little military high school i spent 4 yrs at, all the teachers were WWII vets, and some few of them went thru some heavy shit.  They basically would only talk about it if we asked and if we asked they would go into some detail.

  11. And then, of course, there were all the John Wayne movies.

We got WWII by social osmosis.

  12.    “Devin is an idiot for buying into it, but good riddance.”

BiD, in his case a more appropriate name than “truth social” for the latest grift would be TS aka “tough sh*t.”

must be some really bigly payoff for him to turn his back on a rather lucrative post in critterville. either that or there is something more dastardly than usual that was about to be disclosed before the next election.

  13. patd – I think the California redistricting left the SFB water boy without a place to run.  Better to retire now, collect the retirement and go shove his nose in for a last few breaths before joining other idiots selling wacky tobaccy shares on the street corners.

  14. patd…   really great cartoon!
yeah…  WWII vets must be very few at this juncture.  I salute all of them!

That was when everyone worked together for the betterment of this country.  Too bad that republicans… such as Bob Dole…  are also few and far between nowadays.

As to our athletes going to the Olympics.  They all work very hard and sacrifice a lot…  I don’t think they should be penalized for China’s mistakes.  Go USA!

  15. Good on Biden for taking a hard(er) line on China- they deserve it, and GQPs will have a difficult time with the cognitive dissonance 👍

  16. Mom’s dementia test ……………
If you go to the fridge , and forget what you wanted, that’s just getting old and forgetful.
If you go to the fridge and forget what it’s for,  that’s dementia .

  17. Let’s see if this posts correctly.

Nope – but I can fix it thanks to the magic Edit button.

    Nov. 10, 2021 -Dec. 6, 2021
New daily reported cases rose 49%
New daily reported deaths rose 40%
    Covid-related hospitalizations rose 4%

Seems the only good news on the virus front is that Omicron may not cause as severe illness as Delta – the bad news is – Delta is surging here now.

People are laughing at Trump’s new company

Is this the revenge of Four Seasons Landscaping?

That was the worn-down venue in Philadelphia where Donald Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, launched the doomed effort to block Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election. The Giuliani group meant to book the Four Seasons hotel, but somebody goofed and Giuliani ended up spouting his familiar election lies in front of an industrial garage door plastered with Trump signs. The Trump effort to overturn the election never got any more professional than that.

  19. Trump’s new media company, called the Trump Media & Technology Group, may suffer the same amateurish delusions. An “investor presentation” the company recently filed with the Securities and Exchange commission is provoking guffaws among business analysts, with laughable evasions and barely any business strategy. “It does feel like every public action by this company is designed give the impression that it is a joke,” Bloomberg analyst Matt Levine wrote on Dec. 7.

Anthrax arms race helped Europeans evolve against disease

Essentially, Darwin’s law was at work: At the dawn of humans’ emergence in sub-Saharan Africa, hunter-gatherer cultures began to eat more and more ruminants, encountering anthrax more regularly than their primate ancestors. The disease would have wiped out many of these early humans, leaving survivors who had a natural genetic resistance to anthrax—i.e., fewer anthrax receptors.
Next, the lab looked at the gene expressions of different human populations, including those of European, Chinese, Japanese and Yoruba (a sub-Saharan African ethnic group) ancestry.  They found that while all showed a reduction in anthrax receptor expression compared to most mammals, the European group had an even greater reduction—and a reduction in expression meant a reduced risk of the anthrax bacteria taking hold. This follows observations that Europeans seem to be less sensitive to anthrax toxins compared with Africans or Asians.

A great example is  high in the Swiss Alps.  The really old houses have the cows living at ground level , the family living above them on the second floor, and hay and fodder on the third floor.
They slept really close to their animals to keep warm .

  21. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/people-are-laughing-at-trumps-new-company-214853729.html

“The Trump company is a serious venture with real money at stake. TMTG has plans to merge with a special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, called Digital World Acquisition Corp., which has raised roughly $1 billion for the deal. Normally, a public company would disclose who its investors are, which DWAC will have to do at some point. For now, however, those investors are anonymous. Two hedge funds that invested in DWAC before knowing of the Trump merger pulled their money in October after news of the deal broke.”

“Donald Trump met with Patrick Orlando, DWAC’s chief executive, early in 2021, before DWAC had raised money as a SPAC and gone public in a September offering. If they discussed the very deal that happened, that would violate the rules for SPACs, which aren’t supposed to have a specific target company in mind when they raise funds. The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating and could issue fines or sanctions, or find no wrongdoing at all.”

OM – Some funny stuff in that link. Orange Grifter’s grip may be slipping already.

Grand Old Party  is now the Grifter Ongoing Party .
The beauty is they are scamming their own followers, and their dogma  is killing them at 3 times the rate of us commie plotters.
Plus they are going to spend a boatload of money  putting those square tires on all those monster trucks.

  23. Peter Greene  and Jeremy Spence , Spence has the blonde hair on the left , he went insane.  Greene lasted a little longer .
For me , this is Fleetwood Mac.

  24. There is a giant pile of great music  before the “Roomers Album” ever dropped.  And that coke fueled soap opera ever came about.
