Priorities
So I’m thinking by shortening time frames to cut costs now, in 2024 Dems can campaign on extending programs that turned out to be popular. Might even be a best case scenario.

>Jonathan Capehart:
Nothing is going to get done in Washington, on Capitol Hill come 2022 because of the 2022 midterms, and the fact that the House majority, Democratic House majority, hangs in the balance in 2022. Maybe even also the Senate majority hangs in the balance.
And so what’s happening is, Democrats are trying to cram in every policy priority that they have into that reconciliation bill. And right now, no one seems to want to give up their pet project. But we’re getting down to the wire here, where folks are going to have to decide, what’s your number one priority? You can’t have everything. What’s your number one priority? And how can we get to yes?
[…]
David Brooks:
The worst thing they could do is keep every little piece of the bill, but just make it cheaper. And that would ensure that they did everything badly.
And so they have really got to make some priorities. And if it comes to shove, then Joe Biden’s got to say, OK, here’s the compromise that I support. You’re either — you going to support your president, or are you not?
And I think they will get to that as well. When I hear the Democrats talking, I do not hear them erecting walls. I hear them getting to yes, but in a way where they get the most.
The Senate will reconvene on Saturday to try to pass a short-term extension of federal highway programs after a GOP roadblock prevented what was expected to be a glide path to President Biden’s desk.
The Senate was on standby for hours Friday with the expectation that it would try to quickly approve a 30-day extension once the stopgap bill passed the House, where it cleared in a 365-51 vote on Friday night.
But Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), appearing on the Senate floor as the House was voting, indicated that they didn’t yet have buy-in from all 100 senators. The Senate largely left town on Thursday, but any one senator can still prevent the highway funding patch from being sent to Biden quickly.
“It is my understanding that the House is going to send the Senate a 30-day extension of the Surface Transportation Authorization Act. Republicans cannot clear it tonight. Therefore, we will come back tomorrow and try to pass it then,” Wyden said.
The Senate will reconvene at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Aides didn’t immediately respond to questions about the hold up, but without consent the bill could be dragged out for days.
The Department of Transportation furloughed roughly 3,700 workers on Friday after Congress failed to pass an extension of federal highway funding by an end-of-September deadline amid a stalemate in the House on the Senate-passed infrastructure bill.

Poobah, the Dems need the help of someone like Donnie Deutsch rather than Pramila Jayapal. Sell the goddam bill rather than sell the fight between Democrats over the bill.
One of the things, one of the options I have heard is — you know, this is a 10-year plan. This is not a one-year plan. It’s a 10-year plan. So if you have the child tax credit, say, or free community college over 10 years, well, what if you scale it back to five years? How much does how that bring down the cost of this infrastructure plan?
Congresswoman Suzan Delbene, I think she is the chair of the New Democrats. She’s all about, let’s do a few things well, and then be able to say — show to the American people that we have got this done. So if you shrink the number — the number of years the program carries over, then that brings down the cost.
“Manchin and Sinema want to reopen the negotiations to pry more concessions out of the left — and appear to be threatening significant damage to their party if they are not allowed to do that.”
F the both of them.
“…any Democrat who does not support this deal, protestations about fiscal responsibility or pressing the pause button notwithstanding, is playing directly into GOP hands.“
repdean also talked about shortening the 10 years in order to get to manchinema’s $1.5T
"He said look, clearly I have to be straight up with you. It is not going to be the $3.5 trillion number that we would all like… and so he said instead of picking a number, what I ask of you… are the programmatic things that must be in the bill" – @RepDean w/ @NicolleDWallacepic.twitter.com/Z0ki9ygf1C
Yep. Then, as Craig said, Dems can run on not allowing Repugz to take away those popular programs.
It would actually be smarter if Repugz (and Manchin/Sinema) OK’d the larger amount, so that 2024 isn’t an issue. Well, they are banking on voter restrictions and redistricting to help them out.
Hey, have Republicans thought about rolling back those tax cuts they gave to the wealthy???
BiD, manchin says he’s for many of the bill’s goals. can’t find it now, but he did list child and senior care as well as education et al when talking to press on street the other day. there’s also his fervent push to repeal the former guy’s tax cuts for the rich. so he’s not all bad.
Joe Manchin attracted a great deal of press attention last night by issuing a long statement expressing his list of mostly familiar grievances with Joe Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. What drew less attention were some shorter and more elliptical comments he made laying out areas of agreement. If you read between the lines, and add some optimistic assumptions, you can see the outline of a potential deal.
The biggest problem Democrats face is financing the program, given that every dollar Democrats can raise, either through higher taxes on the wealthy or reduced spending on prescription drugs, has a team of lobbyists pleading its case. Manchin laid out a practical way through: repeal of the high-end portion of the Trump tax cuts to pay for it. “I want to do a tax overhaul,” he said. “One thing you understand that all Democrats agreed on, there’s not a lot of things we all agree on, is that the 2017 tax cuts are unfair and weighted toward the high end. Let’s fix that.”
Look, if there are people out there right now enough to sway an election who don’t know the difference between dem and gop, and, golly, just can’t be sure which way they’ll vote…..the country is just plain screwed, katy bar the door, and you best be looking for safe haven. That’s just too great a preponderance of imbasols.
And maybe the good guys always win in the long run and whatnot, but the imbasols always seem to wind up with a good long run at it before that.
LOS LLANOS DE ARIDANE, Canary Islands (AP) — An erupting volcano on a Spanish island off northwest Africa blew open two more fissures on its cone Friday that belched forth lava, with authorities reporting “intense” activity in the area. The new fissures, about 15 meters (50 feet) apart, sent streaks of fiery red and orange molten rock down toward the sea, parallel to an earlier flow that reached the Atlantic Ocean earlier this week. The volcano was “much more aggressive,”

Why am I harping about the Cumbre Vieja , it’s over 6,000 feet high and this –
Day et al. (1999)[8] indicated that the Cumbre Vieja may be in the initial stages of failure. The authors of the paper also said that the geological development of La Palma had undergone changes due to the southerly migration of the hotspot and the collapse of the earlier volcanoes. Subsequent to this, a triple-arm rift system had evolved with the eventual closing down of volcanic activity associated with two of the arms – the north-west and north-east rifts. The reasons can only be hypothesised. This caused the southern arm – the Cumbre Vieja – to be the sole location of volcanic activity. As a result, they postulated that the western flank may be in the initial stages of failure.-
Day et al. (1999),[8] Ward and Day (2001)[9] and Ward and Day (2005)[24] hypothesize that, during an eruption at some future date, the western half of the Cumbre Vieja — approximately 500 km3 (5 x 1011 m3) with an estimated mass of 1.5 trillion metric tons — will catastrophically fail in a massive gravitational landslide and enter the Atlantic Ocean, generating a so-called mega-tsunami. The debris will continue to travel along the ocean floor as a debris flow. Computer modelling indicates that the resulting initial wave may attain a local amplitude (height) in excess of 600 metres (2,000 ft) and an initial peak-to-peak height[clarify] that approximates to 2 kilometres (1 mi), and travel at about 720 kilometres per hour (450 mph) (approximately the speed of a jet aircraft), inundating the African coast in about one hour, the southern coastlines of the British Isles in about 3.5 hours, and the eastern seaboard of North America in about six hours, by which time the initial wave will have subsided into a succession of smaller ones each about 30 metres (100 ft) to 60 metres (200 ft) high. These may surge to several hundred metres in height and be several kilometres apart while retaining their original speed. The models of Day et al.; (1999),[8] Ward and Day (2001),[9] suggest that the event could inundate up to 25 kilometres (16 mi) inland. If the model is correct, then this scale of inundation would greatly damage or destroy cities along the entire North American eastern seaboard, including Boston, New York City, Miami and many other cities near the Atlantic coast.
“The resin binds CO2 more efficiently than any other material,” says Lackner. “Each column is 1,000 times more efficient than a tree.” Wind speed determines exactly how much CO2 the resin binds. Once it is saturated with CO2, which takes about 30 minutes, the columns fold like an accordion into water, where the CO2 is washed off for storage or reuse. Then the process begins again.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Saturday set a new deadline of Oct. 31 for the House to pass the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill.
In a “Dear Colleague” letter released on Saturday, Pelosi said that “more time was needed” to pass the infrastructure bill along with the larger, $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package after scrambling over the past two days to get enough votes.
The Speaker said she wants to pass the bipartisan bill by Oct. 31, when the 30-day reauthorization of federal highway programs expires. The House passed the extension Friday night amid the Democratic infighting over infrastructure.
“There is an October 31st Surface Transportation Authorization deadline, after last night’s passage of a critical 30-day extension,” Pelosi wrote. “We must pass BIF [bipartisan infrastructure framework] well before then – the sooner the better, to get the jobs out there.”
[…]
In her letter, Pelosi acknowledged the “two dynamics” that clashed in the past few days, adding that “out of respect for our colleagues who support the bills and out of recognition for the need for both, I would not bring BIF to the Floor to fail.”
“Again, we will and must pass both bills soon. We have the responsibility and the opportunity to do so. People are waiting and want results,” the Speaker wrote.
Two state military colleges in the South are celebrating a historic moment outside a football game in South Carolina.
The corps of cadets at both The Citadel in South Carolina and the Virginia Military Institute are being commanded by women.
The teams are playing football Saturday during parents weekend at The Citadel and the commanders will be formally introduced at a military review parade, where they will exchange mementos.

I don’t figure i have an alma matterous because I never bothered to graduate from anywhere after 6-7 years of sporadic attendance.
