she really got to them with the lacking of common sense accusation.  evoking memories of yo momma telling you “what for, chile” had to hurt and was just the right way to put it in southern-ese.

her whole statement by guv kay:

“Folks are supposed to have common sense. But it’s time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks, not the regular folks. It’s the unvaccinated folks that are letting us down,” Ivey told reporters in Birmingham.

White House: Ala. sees 215% increase in newly vaccinated people (wbrc.com)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – On Monday, The White House COVID-19 Response Team updated the number of people who have recently got their first dose of the COVID vaccine.

It said 3 million Americans have gotten their first shot in the last seven days, which is the highest seven-day total since July 4, 2021.

And over the past three weeks in Alabama, we’ve seen a 215 percent increase in the average number of newly vaccinated people per day.

Louisiana saw a 302 percent increase, and Mississippi saw a 250 percent increase in the average daily number of newly vaccinated people.

The White House COVID-19 Response Team said, over the past few weeks, it has seen a nearly 70 percent increase in the average number of new people getting vaccinated each day in the country.

prof explains another side in the how-to-convince-the-unvaxxers argument

Joshua Johnson, host of The Week, spoke with University of Michigan Prof. Ken Resniscow about “motivational interviewing.” In his introduction of Resnicow, Johnson said that “scolding people with facts and figures and data” was not working to change people’s minds about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines, but this approach had a better track record. Soon, the unvaccinated who are sick will finally turn on politicians who’ve been vaccinated themselves, while not speaking to promote it for others.

However, most folks I know have family members who are very church-y and think the vaccine is evil, and, that vaccination passports are “the mark of the beast.” I have some in my family, too. There is no talking to them. Jesus has his fingers in their ears.

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/08/03/unvaccinated-texas-demographics/

In the story linked here, a doctor is refusing to get the vaccine. Time to revoke her license to practice medics?

The FDA needs to get on the stick and get the vaccine approved. Once that is done, employers can more easily require their employees to be vaccinated.

Bob, I’m sure you’re following this, that the Siberian permafrost and limestone are releasing methane as it melts.

Scientists have long been worried about what many call “the methane bomb” — the potentially catastrophic release of methane from thawing wetlands in Siberia’s permafrost.

But now a study by three geologists says that a heat wave in 2020 has revealed a surge in methane emissions “potentially in much higher amounts” from a different source: thawing rock formations in the Arctic permafrost.

The difference is that thawing wetlands releases “microbial” methane from the decay of soil and organic matter, while thawing limestone — or carbonate rock — releases hydrocarbons and gas hydrates from reservoirs both below and within the permafrost, making it “much more dangerous” than past studies have suggested.

That’s from WaPo, btw

https://reasonstobecheerful.world/our-hydrogen-powered-future-is-unfolding-at-the-edge-of-the-world/

“The Orkney islands have two great electrolyzers that are powered by all that excess green energy. These machines split water into its elemental components, oxygen and hydrogen. The former is released harmlessly back into the atmosphere, while the latter is funneled into a tank, ready to be tapped as an energy source at a later date.“

“On the Spanish island of Majorca, the so-called Green Hysland project aims to create southern Europe’s first hub of hydrogen power, guided by lessons learned on the windswept Scottish isles. And then there’s the Dutch HEAVENN project, perhaps the world’s most ambitious hydrogen ecosystem scheme, aiming to replace the use of natural gas on a monumental scale.”

Hydrogen power; plentiful, storable, clean.

“…top Republican National Committee official in the state has spread anti-vaccine rhetoric and misinformation, comparing the Biden administration’s vaccine efforts to Nazi-era “brown shirts,” and twice calling the vaccines “the mark of the beast,” comparable to a “false god.”

It’s not just the church-y members of my family who have this mindset. Pretty soon, they will tell us that the 600,000+ who died from covid in this country were actually just raptured up to heaven.

“The so-called Delta variant of the coronavirus and the threat of an unconstitutionally-motivated restriction,” hangs over the Calvary Chapel of Bangor, Maine, “like a sword of Damocles,” its lawyers argued in the petition.“

Wow, the church’s legal team referred to Greek mythology in their petition.

“Legal experts said that the church’s emergency request might have been considered premature by the justices because the state hadn’t actually implemented new restrictions related to the Delta variant and had stopped enforcing other restrictions in May as Covid cases declined.”

1 in 3 New US COVID-19 Cases in Texas and Florida, White House Says (businessinsider.com)

The US recorded 598,214 new cases over the past seven days, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Texas recorded 68,525 new weekly cases on Tuesday. Florida recorded 110,724 new cases during the same period, according to Johns Hopkins University, for a combined total of about 180,000.

Florida’s weekly tally is just short of its record high for the entire pandemic, of 111,574 cases over a week in January.

Opinion | There’s plenty of money to avoid evictions. States just have to spend it. – The Washington Post

Democrats are pointing fingers: progressive lawmakers have criticized conservative Democrats and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), while Ms. Pelosi blames the Biden administration and Republicans. In truth, this is not the administration’s fault, nor is it Congress’s. Washington has provided money. States are just failing to distribute it, a bureaucratic disaster that will squeeze landlords and commit perhaps millions of renters to extreme financial hardship, even homelessness.

[…]

State-level moratoriums still cover about a third of renters. Laggard states that lack such restrictions should consider emergency policies to cover desperate people, up to and including temporary state-level eviction moratoriums, until state officials prove they can effectively distribute federal money. Philadelphia, for example, requires landlords to apply for federal aid on their tenants’ behalf before they can file to evict them. The Treasury Department has relaxed some federal aid application guidelines; states should follow the federal government’s lead in streamlining the process.

One of the weirdest sensation I have felt has been seeing my name in news reports about a horrible murder that occurred decades ago.  The sensation was the same as I felt when I was leaving for work in January nineteen-eighty-four.  I climb in my vehicle and turn on the radio to hear that I had been murdered.  Immediately I turned off the vehicle and went inside to call the police asking “WHAT?”.  This is very early, like about six or seven hours after the killing of the family.  I talked to the police, there was no suspect at the time. He was not found for decades later based on DNA.
It took decades to find the guy who killed the family.  At the time we did not know if he got the wrong person or was deranged and killed a family out of the bad luck for them.  It turns out he just got the urge to kill them and not based on name.
His trial is going on and the prosecution just completed their side of the trial.  After this trial he goes to another trial where he is the suspect in another murder.
Be happy you never hear over the radio or television you have been murdered.

Pogo –
I read that  last night , one of the telling things about that paper  –
They found 2 seams, each over one hundred miles long  leaking that deeper source of methane .

The increase was strongest in July/August 2020 and in March/April 2021. During summer, 2020, two conspicuous elongated areas of increased methane concentration (in the following: “elongated maxima”) appeared (Fig. 1), approximately parallel to each other, several hundred kilometers long, and trending SW–NE. In early 2021, methane concentration increased over the entire area. In the present communication, we demonstrate the geological significance of these maxima and discuss possible reasons for the increased methane concentrations, as well as consequences for the permafrost–methane feedback.

Bolivia’s lake Poopo dries up and scientists fear refill unlikely

LA PAZ, Aug 3 (Reuters) – Bolivia’s Lake Poopo was once a fountain of life for local inhabitants, who fished from its teeming waters and farmed along its banks. Now it is a desert.
Scientists say the one-time lake, which sprawls across Bolivia’s sun-drenched, high-altitude altiplano, has fallen victim to decades of water diversion for regional irrigation needs. And a warmer, drier climate has made its recovery increasingly unlikely.
“It’s like a perfect storm,” says Jorge Molina, a researcher with the Universidad Mayor de San Andres. “Every year that passes the situation gets worse.”

And yet, we have this couple.

“Missouri Republican Gov. Mike Parson on Tuesday announced pardons for Patricia and Mark McCloskey, the St. Louis homeowners who pointed guns at protesters near their home last summer.“

“Mark McCloskey parlayed his notoriety from the 2020 incident into a bid for the US Senate, and pictures of him brandishing a long rifle outside his St. Louis mansion are prominently featured on his campaign website and social media.
He’s is vying for the Senate seat currently held by Roy Blunt, who announced he would not seek reelection next year.“

KC, either impeachment or STFU. Frankly I’m tired of Dems eating their own. The fucking president of the US paid a porn star and a Playmate of the Year to cover up his extramarital affairs with them and notafuckingthing came of it. If Cuomo’s accusers came forward at the time I’m listening. Otherwise, I’m skeptical. Cuomo is bad high school boorishness in comparison to dumbass. If I’m Cuomo I stay in office and say prove it.

Blue –
Tidal turbines  are a great idea on paper , we have zero understanding of what they do to sea life.  The first one in world just came online .  No doubt a lot of eyeballs on that problem.

As to the Hydrogen Economy , 2 problems –
Splitting water cheaply
And the fact that it’s molecule  is so small , it can pass through a crazy number of materials under pressure .  So storing it for use becomes a real problem.
Then there’s this problem with it –
When we burn it,  it makes water vapor again . Now imagine our entire jet fleet dumping water vapor all over the world at 35,000 feet every day.  And all land transport doing the same thing at ground level.
It’s not the silver bullet  we think it is.
Water vapor is a greenhouse gas.

CBS This Morning’s led story today was Simone Biles .
Frankly that was a poor choice.  We have seen countless hours of her.  I wish her well, now go home sit down and entertain  countless offers to make money.
The trials of wealthy people who throw footballs , and dance on 4 in railroad ties burns me more and more.
The greatest problem in Texas today  is  about two fucking football teams.
My problem is with how all this pushes important stories off the pages.
Men are pigs , and always have been . Changing their boorish ways is going to be a long range problem .
