the guardian:

Hideki Matsuyama has recorded one of Japan’s greatest international sporting successes after winning the US Masters golf , months before Tokyo is scheduled to host the summer Olympics.

His compatriots were preparing for work, perhaps pausing to catch glimpses of the last few holes on TV, when the 29-year-old secured a one-shot victory over the American Will Zalatoris at Augusta National in Georgia.

With his final putt, Matsuyama became the first Asian-born player to don the green jacket, and the only Japanese man to win a major title. Two women from Japan have won majors: Hisako Higuchi at the 1977 LPGA Championship and Hinako Shibuno at the 2019 Women’s British Open.

[…]

A TV interviewer in Tokyo thanked Matsuyama “on behalf of all Japan”, while the prime minister, Yoshihide Suga, offered his congratulations.

“It was really wonderful,” said Suga, whose government is struggling to contain a rise in Covid-19 cases. “As the coronavirus drags on, his achievement moved our hearts and gave us courage.”

Tomohiro Fukaya, a national team track cyclist, said he had arrived early for morning training and watched the last few holes in his car. “The TV commentators were so overcome they could hardly speak,” he tweeted. “I was on the verge of tears too.”

[…]

Matsuyama’s victory was a much-needed feelgood story as Tokyo prepares to host an Olympics dogged by scandal and concerns about safety amid the coronavirus pandemic. It also completed a successful fortnight for Japanese golfers at Augusta, after compatriot Tsubasa Kajitani won the Women’s Amateur Championship there on 3 April.

where is carl hiaasen when we need him for stories like this in today’s the guardian:

An alligator swims in a pond off of the 8th hole during the Honda Classic golf tournament, in Palm Beach in March.

With toilet-invading iguanasdeadly hybrid super-serpents and toxic giant toads, no corner of Florida is ever completely safe from the threat of a marauding reptile.

Now, with the imminent start of the rainy season, another menace is emerging from the swamps: amorous alligators heading into urban areas in an annual quest for love.

The 2021 season appears to be off to a lively start. Last week, the Hillsborough county sheriff’s office was called to handle a 10ft gator hiding under a parked car in Tampa.

[…]

Last September Mark Johnson, an artist from Port St Lucie, produced a vivid self-portrait of an 8ft alligator chomping its teeth into his thigh while he was walking his dog.

In November, a 74-year-old man freed his puppy from the jaws of an alligator in a lake near his home in Estero. Video of the incident showed a composed Richard Wilbanks keeping his cigar clenched in his jaws throughout.

speaking of florida, long term care comes to mind. john oliver was pretty grim on the subject last night

John Oliver explains the industry behind nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and why long-term care needs fixing.

During my college years, I worked at a long term care home.  Nights.  It was the hardest job I’ve ever had (physically and emotionally), and, it was the most meaningful job I’ve ever had.   The pay was minimum wage, so I chose to work from 11pm until 7am for the extra 40 cents an hour.

The CEOs and execs are pulling in the big bucks.  The homes charge a fortune to pay for those big, executive salaries and benefit packages.

Most folks don’t have it (or not for long), so they end up on Medicaid.   A lot of the homes are closing down because they aren’t profitable enough with Medicaid residents. Cut the salaries at the top and pay the caregivers better. It’s not a lot to ask.

Yes, even grandma and grandpa are only seen as profit centers until the end.

Biden Infrastructure Plan Would Fund Shift Toward Home Healthcare for Seniors – WSJ

President Biden’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan would devote $400 billion to providing seniors more medical care at home, with the aim of shifting treatment away from institutions and hospitals as the U.S. faces a looming surge in its aging population.

Democrats say the measure is needed because the healthcare system is unprepared for the unprecedented growth in the senior population and the bill would boost incomes for the many women and people in minority groups who provide the services.

Long term care for seniors is a terrible system in the US. It is the poster child for shitty privatized healthcare.  The Medicaid spend down requirement causes “creative” estate planning to move significant assets out of parents’ names into their kids’ names who would take from the parents’ estates or into a trust to protect the assets but for the medicaid spend down requirement.  Last time I checked the look back period was 5 years except in California, where it’s 30 months.

Yes, POTUS Joe!   Folks should stay put as long as possible.  Outside help for those living with family who work and can’t give complete care is needed, as well.

What is the pay disparity for women in golf?   My father played and I liked playing with him but if you are playing with overcompetitive unfun people then it’s the worse.  Mr. Cracker used to play but when it became clear he was going to have to ride and play, he stopped

This “ghost gun” nonsense is just red-meat for knee-jerk liberals and the even more reactionary right-wing gun nuts.

Mass-shooters use AR-15s in almost every case of which i’ve heard, not once have i heard of a kit gun being used.  Ban .223 ammo

Pogo

Bink, you’re right about mass shootings – they have typically been with AR style weapons, at least in recent years, but mass shootings make up less than 2% of the fatalities from gun deaths in the US. About 60% of deaths are suicide (at least in 2017) and the vast majority of the 37%of deaths classified as homicides are not mass shootings.  This article from Pew and this one from Wiki provide some numbers on gun deaths in the US.  Now I have no idea how many kit guns are out there, but it sounds less like a hobby and more like a simple means to avoid the law for people who want a pistol but can’t pass a background check.  Regardless, you are right about where the focus should be – get rid of assault style weapons, even if they are only cosmetically assault weapons and ammo for them (.223 being the caliber that sticks out – and tighten the process that has to be gone through to get a weapon or the ammunition for it.  There are other areas that deserve emphasis – open carry and other bullshit like that, so the field is fertile.  Imagine what could be done if Joe Manchin would come to his senses and not stand in the way if the filibuster was assigned to the dustbin of history AND he wouldn’t vote NRA all the way.

Bink

Yeah i don’t think gun suicides should be considered for the purposes of such arguments, but i’ve heard all the contrary assertions🤷‍♂️

Pogo

I agree.  It’s almost like including people who commit suicide by jumping off bridges and people who die when they collapse in “bridge deaths” stats. the Pew article has a couple of interesting graphs – one, deaths per 100,000 makes it look like the total curve is flat but mildly rising.  If you click on the graph it takes you to another article addressing that. ’95 to ’08 it falls some, from then, it rises. Hmmm, ’08… what could be the significance of that?  the second chart I referred to is Active Shooter chart.  And on cue, active shooter incidents have risen beginning in ’09.  Hmmm, ’09 … what could be the significance of that?  Gee I wonder if the news out about the increase in domestic terrorism and RW terrorist attacks could have anything to do with each other.  At first glance, yep.  Funny that, in a kind of not so funny way.

And we can add one more to 2021 – from a school shooting in Knoxville today, but only one person is dead.

There is a $2 Billion car battery plant in the works in Georgia right now, it made news today over some trade ruling.  Everyone in the state likes the ruling .
This brings in some interesting  horse trading on the InFra Bill.  Joe wants $167 for E-Cars .

The daily fix of Texas-sized, stupid stuff: BS 14 (typo intentional)

“But opponents say it reduces workers’ access to paid sick leave after they’ve been navigating the pandemic for more than a year.”

“You have people on TV saying the most important thing to protect yourself from this virus is to stay at home if you don’t feel well, but we’re not going to do sick leave, so you can choose between going to work and eating,” said Rick Levy, the president of the Texas AFL-CIO.“

“Texas lawmakers have filed six bills that target transgender students’ sports participation — and two of those bills would affect colleges and university sports in addition to K-12.“

“The National Collegiate Athletic Association Board of Governors said it will only hold college championships in states where transgender student-athletes can participate without discrimination. The Monday warning sets the stage for a political fight with multiple states…”

“The pandemic, along with the economic and humanitarian crises it has created, has led many people to unlikely places. As they have risen to the occasion — feeding hungry kids, signing neighbors up for vaccines, holding public officials accountable — ordinary citizens have stepped into unofficial public life like never before. Weisinger, too, has found herself in a new role: activist.“

I booked  my second shot ,  4/15 @ 4.
How did I do that ?  I didn’t die from Smallpox, the greatest unseen killer  ever .
.
Who was in those 1st clinical trials?
The king of France’s entire family.
I got my “shot” 165 years later,  a tiny little fork the nurse poked in your arm , the goal was to raise a scab a little smaller than a dime.
This marked you for life.  For the next 20 years, those  scars always caught  my eye.  High on the arm just below the shoulder.
Hard to believe that anyone today would agree to  that  “shot”.

I am going to the  Buddy Holly Center  with a fundraiser.
Guitar picks

We are sitting  on the never  before seen “Buddy Holly Performing Arts Center”.
The first time I saw it was  my Covid shot , I had no idea that my home town would build this beautiful hall.
Buddy Holly when I was a kid, was seen by the city fathers  as spoiled Harley riding rock and roller  that played  nigger music.
Now we have built a temple to him.
I sold picks before , to fund my gardening  on Buddy Holly Ave.
I have a enough cash to do this.
My first goal .
A fish bowl on the counter of the gift shop  in the Buddy Holly Center.
I “front”  the money .
We print their info. on one side , and the GPS of Buddy’s grave on the other.
We do it in Black and Gold , Lubbock Highs colors .
