now for the real news

wapo:

Dogs have officially returned to the White House.
The administration released photos of President Biden’s German shepherds, 12-year-old Champ and 2-year-old Major, on the White House grounds.
Champ is enjoying his new dog bed by the fireplace in Washington, and Major is taking in the grass on the South Lawn, which has become his favorite running place for now, according Michael LaRosa, press secretary for first lady Jill Biden.
Major, the first shelter dog to live in the White House, was adopted by the Bidens in 2018.
[…]
In addition to making history with Major’s presence in the White House, the first family will also welcome a cat soon, Jill Biden said.

back to the thread subject

business insider:

On Wednesday, the Biden administration strengthened its calls for Russia to release opposition figure Alexei Navalny. He also called for the release of protesters supporting Navalny, who were jailed over the weekend.
“We can both operate in the mutual self-interest of our country as a New START agreement, and make it clear to Russia that we are very concerned about their behavior, whether it’s Navalny, whether it’s the SolarWinds, or whether it’s reports about bounties on the heads of Americans in Afghanistan,” President Biden told reporters on Monday.
Biden’s comments on Russia represent a stark shift from Trump’s political courtship and repeated lack of condemnation of Putin.
At a later press conference, Press Secretary Jen Psaki reiterated the calls for Navalny’s release.
“We call on Russian authorities to release all those detained for exercising their universal rights and for the immediate and unconditional release of Alexei Navalny,” Psaki told reporters. Over the weekend, the State Department issued a statement condemning Navalny’s detention and the mass arrest of protesters.
Psaki also called for Russia to “cooperate” with the international investigation into Navalny’s poisoning in August 2020, when the opposition leader was poisoned by Novichok, a nerve agent.
[…]
The New York Times reported that upwards of 3,000 protesters were arrested by Russian authorities, and in a call with students today, Putin called the protests “illegal.”
National security experts told Insider that Navalny’s arrest has left Putin in a Catch-22 situation where Navalny has outmaneuvered him, and his release or death could further mobilize people against the government.

oh no, not again!  we just talked about these bugs only a few years ago. boy, how time and insects fly by.

‘When they are this abundant, they fly, land and crawl everywhere, including occasionally landing on humans,’ said Gary Parsons of Michigan State University.

the guardian:

Billions of cicadas that have spent 17 years underground are set to emerge across large areas of the eastern US, bringing swarming numbers and loud mating calls to major towns and cities.

The periodic cicadas – bugs with strikingly red eyes, black bodies and orange wings – burrow underground as nymphs and suck fluids from the roots of plants as they grow, eventually bursting into the open as adults in mass synchronized events.

The last such event for 15 states including New York, Ohio, Illinois and Georgia occurred in 2004. The cicadas emerge in a 17-year cycle, meaning they will appear this year once temperatures are warm enough, expected to be mid-May.

Whew – this is the Brood X cicada year – we’re in the Brood V area so we’ve got another 12 years before the return of the bugs.

I was out there somewhere, I think it was texas, when there was a damn infestation of some kind of crickets.  I mean bazillions of them about 2″ long.   Walking was like walking on bubble wrap.  It was really disgusting.
Kellyanne seems to be disintegrating to an alarming degree.   I could almost see feeling sorry for her, cause it seems to be really “out there” with the daughter and all.

It would make it harder for Putin to “disappear” Navalny if he were to get the prize….   maybe.

Sturg – The first baseball game I went to in TX, was during cricket season.  Folks brought umbrellas with them and they would just slide offa the umbrella in front of me and onto me.  Parking lots were full of them, too.   I haven’t seen it happen in several years.
Poo-tin won’t care about what the West thinks.  He can just claim cause of death was covid.

How would they keep Vlad from getting his hands on the prize money?

As far as I can tell, the vaccine doesn’t exist anywhere near me. I could possibly be group 1B, but definitely 1C.

faux will probably counterattack by saying joe violated his own edict against vitriol.

BTW, as long as it’s not disrespectful, does being snarky count as vitriolic?

the hill:

The Senate sent a strong signal Tuesday that there are not nearly enough votes to convict President Trump in an impeachment trial when only five GOP senators rejected an effort by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to declare the looming trial unconstitutional.

Paul’s motion failed in 55-45 vote, but only five Republicans voted against it.

Such a result means there is little change impeachment managers will win the at leasst 17 GOP votes they’d need to get to the two-thirds 67 votes needed for a conviction.

The edict to play nicely with one’s co-workers does not apply to Poo-tin and Doocey.  They were part of the previous administration.

Hmmm. Liz Cheney is on tRUMPsky’s list to get revenge.    Wonder how Dick will deal with Donny?   I don’t like siding with Cheney, but I’ll make an exception.

What if all of the GOP just courts the ws vote (they will) and Mitt and Liz and the Lisa Just go away.  It’s not great for America.  It emboldens the assholes.  If family history means anything, I will be outta here before 2024, but it won’t be pretty for those left behind.

Craig – I hope it is not serious for him.  His issue highlights a problem with the legislature.  But, I hear my right wing siblings yelling term limits -that is not the solution.  We do have to get younger people challenging the older ones.

Lessee, trump loses and his sycophants have to go somewhere else. It won’t be toward dems and there won’t be a Dumbass party. So they go to RW repug candidates. Trump wins and his sycophants go with him, wherever that is, and the rest of the repug go somewhere else, and it ain’t to dems. 2020 repug votes are split between Dumbass and whoever the repug nominate in 2024. Who benefits?
