Sunday Serendipity

No musical would be complete without at least one dance number. This is one of my favorites. Great music and great dance. How can you go wrong??

Enjoy the music and the dance and as always enjoy your day.

jace, brings back memories of the south pacific number with the sailors singing and dancing “nothing like a dame”… gene Kelly and Sinatra “on the town”… Kelly “singing in the rain” …bob fosse’s sweet charity, all that jazz, and more.  also of course  agnes de mille’s work with rogers and Hammerstein.   unbelievable grace of dancing goldminers, ball players, pajama factory workers, and how about that little tap dance by mobsters in “kiss me kate”

Dancing up walls and onto the ceiling. Dennis Day, Cyd Charise, Fred Astaire, Grease, and don’t forget Bugs and Elmer Fudd.

Happy October, everyone.

It’s the 99th Anniversary of the Arabs (British) taking Damascus, the culmination of an effort to make the Middle East safe for British oil and shipping interests, which inadvertently touched off the perennial war that runs back and forth across the Muslim World.

And, speaking (figuratively) of bloodbaths, commie China is officially 68 years old today.

newsweek: Trump Could Go to War With North Korea So Everyone Forgets About Russia Probe, Report Says The U.K.-based defense and security think tank Rusi released a report ominously titled “Preparing for War in Korea.” “War is now a real possibility,” wrote report author Malcolm Chalmers, the think tank’s deputy director-general. He laid out reasons President Donald Trump could surprise North Korea and other informed observers and follow through on his threats to attack Pyongyang. While the president could decide the U.S. cannot live with a nuclear-armed North Korea, he could also start a conflict to boost his popularity rating… Read more »

the war in Vietnam wasn’t started by well meaning people in 1945 nor were they well meaning at any point in time

People who allow their intellect to be compromised by emotions aren’t dealing in facts and that is why history sometimes is confused

Do you think the French were fighting so the Vietnamese could have democracy…what was well meaning about their action

Probably shouldn’t be posted on semi family page, but one of the best Fosse dance numbers was Take Off With Us  / Air-Otica from All That Jazz which probably got the film its R rating even without the heart surgery & drugs.

Very Broadway song and dancy, Jace.  I gotta admit that Broadway song and dance is not my favorite offering in the theater district.  Musicals, yes, I like them fine.  I think I may have been affected by having to go see too many dance recitals when my sister was a kid. I took a break from the Alabama massacre and caught the SNL cold open last night.  Almost pissed myself when “sessions” gave “trump” a kiss then “trump” picked up “sessions” and set him aside when “Chuck” came into the oval office. And weekend update was good as ever.  Glad… Read more »

Congress did not renew CHIP  effectively leaving 9 million kids without health insurance

Who could do that?

Listened to today’s tune while watching the antics of squirrel trying in vain to get on our birdfeeder. All around, very entertaining. Thanks again Jace.

Jamie,

I stuck with her dance classes plenty long, right up to the point they mercifully ended when she became part of the Alabama State Ballet when she was about 13.  I was the older brother with a driver’s license and was dispatched by mom to transport her to her ballet classes and practices.  That actually helped me develop an appreciation for ballet.

If a Fred or Ginger or Cab had been in her classes I might have appreciated them more.

Love Cab Calloway. Love the Nicholas Brothers.

Geek type thing: Anything Goes was offered to the great Twenties torch singer/Broadway star Libby Holman as a comeback vehicle following the mysterious shooting death of her husband, Zachary Smith Reynolds. Holman turned the show down. Another woman didn’t, and Anything Goes launched the career of the legendary Ethel Merman.

perhaps they’ve decided everybody’s going to be nuked anyway so why spend the money and effort on the future, our children.  here’s their beloved leader leading the parade to extinction.

wapo:

A day after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson suggested that the United States maintains “lines of communications” with Kim Jong Un’s regime, Trump wrote on Twitter that Tillerson is “wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man” — his nickname for Kim.

from the atlantic: …as the remaining unmet needs in Puerto Rico become clearer, and after the Yulín criticized Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke for calling Puerto Rico “a good news story,” Trump has taken any complaints about the federal response as personal attacks. He also referred to those executing the federal response as “my people.” Like Louis XIV, the president adores ostentation and proclaims, “L’etat, c’est moi.” Within Trump’s worldview, this makes sense: If the alleged success of the relief effort a few days ago reflected Trump’s personal brilliance, then any criticism of the effort must represent a… Read more »

Most welcome, Jace. Back in the ages dark I wrote a blog post about Libby Holman, who held copyright with another songwriter on at least one version of “House of the Rising Sun”. Made me curious, so I did some research. Strange and sad life she led.

So many musicals in places that you don’t realize were musicals.  Dooley Wilson in Casablanca that are often cut

It Had to Be You

Smile

Shine

Avalon

Parlez-Moi d’Amour

Knock on Wood

As time Goes by

My favorite is Shine simply because most people don’t know the story behind the song
