Sunday Serendipity

Le Concert Spirituel: Baroque music at the time of Louis XV.

Performed by Jordi Savall & Le Concert des Nations

At the end of the reign of Louis XIV (1722-1774), so-called “private concerts” came into fashion in France. The music no longer took place in churches and palaces but in private homes and gardens in the open air. These “private concerts” had their golden age in France during the reign of Louis XV (1722-1774).

The name Concert Spirituel derives from the fact that the concerts were conceived so that they could be performed during Lent and on other religious holidays of the Catholic Church, a total of some thirty-five days each year, during which all the “profane” activities of the principal musical and theatrical institutions, such as the Paris Opera, the Comédie-Française and the Comédie-Italienne, were brought to a standstill.

Enjoy, Jack

  1. thanks, jack, that’s an appropriate musical vamp/segue from the king known as “le bien-aime” to the new wanna-be king “el BS DOTUS”

The cast of Saturday Night Live shares their remarks on the result of the 2024 presidential election.

  2. Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week’s biggest news, like Trump promising a “Golden Age of America” in his presidential victory speech.

  3. AP: Trump has vowed to shake some of Democracy’s pillars

Even as Trump prevailed, most voters said they were very or somewhat concerned that electing Trump would bring the U.S. closer to being an authoritarian country, where a single leader has unchecked power, according to the AP VoteCast survey. Still, 1 in 10 of those voters backed him anyway. Nearly 4 in 10 Trump voters said they wanted complete upheaval in how the country is run.

  4. All those pesky ethics agreements are giving Trump pause.  Since he will have no qualms about violating them, he might as well sign.

  5. Biden hosts sfb Wednesday.  From what I remember a week ago or so the orange idiot wanted to jail and perhaps execute President Biden.  The tete a tete should be interesting if not tense.

“I will not be inviting former Ambassador Nikki Haley, or former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, to join the Trump Administration, which is currently in formation,” Trump posted on social media. “I very much enjoyed and appreciated working with them previously, and would like to thank them for their service to our country.”
Nikki Hayley, You’re fired…er, not hired. You, too, Pompeo.

  7. BB – Wednesday, Biden could do “whatever the hell he wanted to do,”  to Adolf and  be immune.

  8. Sign Up Here to Join Jan. 18 People’s March

Washington Post: “Organizers estimate 50,000 will attend as part of an expected surge of protests from across the political spectrum as the nation’s seat of power transitions to Trump. The demonstration, dubbed the “People’s March on Washington,” is scheduled for Jan. 18, two days before the inauguration. It is being organized by leading civil rights, racial justice and reproductive health organizations, including the Women’s March and Abortion Access Now, a coalition of organizations including the ACLU, Planned Parenthood and the National Women’s Law Center.”

“Speaking at First Minister’s Questions, Mr Harvie described the 78 year-old as a “convicted felon,” as well as a “misogynist, a climate denier, a fraudster, a conspiracy monger, a racist,” and “a far-right politician who tried to overturn an election result both covertly and by inciting violence.”

  10. Looks like Trump won’t get majority, just a plurality. Harris got more votes than Trump four years ago (74,223,975) and in 2016 (62,984,828). By his screwed-up logic she should declare victory.

    Updated estimate:
    Harris 76.2m votes (48.4%)
    Trump 78.5m votes (49.9%)
    other 2.6m votes (1.5%)
Total turnout 157.3m votes (vs 158.6m in 2020)
    Trump margin +1.5%

  11. “I think it’s a fascinating question why America, which had a thriving fascist movement in the 1930s, didn’t become fascist. Probably it was because FDR was president and not Father Coughlin. Now we will test that theory.”

  12. Craig it was the age of enlightenment. It is from arguments at these garden parties that our founding fathers drew their ideas.  The change from the sacred to the secular is part of traditional institutions losing power and new ones gaining. Louis XV died in 1774, shortly before our revolution and then the French revolution. Change is in the air.
I also understand that witty repartee was the height of fashion. Anyone who was anyone was at these parties.

  13. Lately I keep thinking about the poor man who believed Trump, went to a local pool supply store and got their version of Hydroxychloroquine, took it and died.

  14. The house across the street from my dad’s assisted living facility is still flying their Harris/Walz flag.  Actually, I don’t remember seeing it before.
Will there be midterms? Will MAGAts gerrymander districts and purge voters who affiliated as Dem?
Is there anything Schumer and Biden can put in place to ensure we have another open election?  I like to think there are ways to slow him down or stop him at every turn.  IDK.

  15. Here let me correct that.

the poor man “Idiot” who believed Trump

Using the term “poor man” implies some sympathy for the man. I have none.  The world and if his family are better off with his death. You can’t fix stupid and in this modern libertarian world you can’t even protect stupid. So let Darwin rule.

  16. BiD
You need to stop by and introduce yourself.
    As Edmond Burke Said:
When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.

  17. It’s amazing how many folks around here still smoke cigarettes.  Whining about food prices, while lighting $-however-much those things cost on fire to burn through their cash.  Hmmm, yeah, it was about voting against a woman who was also a POC.  Eggs are an excuse.
I really thought Walz would turn some of the rural townies and farmers, but you can’t get racists and misogynists to change their spots or votes.
Hope the EU and others can band together to act as international guardrails, even as we have few options nationally.

  18. Had an interesting talk with my dad today.  He and I are the only two in my family that will admit voting for Harris.

He  just shook his head and said he’s really worried about Social Security and even more so, about healthcare.  He said folks don’t know what they’ve done, and he couldn’t believe RFKJ being with Adolf.  “Opportunist.”  He is much kinder in name calling than am I.

He told me that he went to one of RFK’s campaign stops when I was a kid (he did not take me); somebody in the crowd threw a rock at him.   (He also took an up close pic he took of Nixon, but not sure where it is or if he trashed it.)

  19. Jack – Only 29% in my county voted for Harris, so there aren’t many of us here.
Maybe start something online to find each other IRL like wearing blue every Tuesday to identify each other. Blue Tuesdays?

Most of the folks here are church-going bigots.  As someone said, Christian nationalism is white supremacy in Bible drag.  And, Christianity is a patriarchal system, so…

The Chiefs look terrible today. Good. Their kicker, and others, are full-on, Chicken-fried Taliban members. Probably the same on every team, though.

  20. A look at rural counties in Missouri get anywhere from 15% to 20% Democratic vote. In Dallas county MO, an area where I was born and raised that is 1500 voters.  1500 voters can flip a school board race, scare the bejeezes out of the town council when they show up for a meeting. Politics is local and the Democrats nation wide have failed at this. What I learned doing neighborhood stuff is that it is amazing what a few vocal people can do. Because most folks set on their ass and at most vote every 4 years. But governing is a 365 day process, you want something you’ve got to show up.

  21. Disband Congress: What Autocrats Do

Here we go. Yep, he’s publicly making abandonment of Senate confirmation process a condition of his support for Senate Majority Leader vote on Wednesday, and I’ll bet abolishing filibuster also on his list.

  22. Republicans are going to have a 53-47 majority in the Senate, and yet here’s Trump urging the Senate to go into recess so that he can bypass it altogether. In other words, he wants to install folks like RFK Jr who couldn’t get through.

“Sen. Elizabeth Warren: Here’s the Plan to Fight Back”

“While still in charge of the Senate and the White House, we must do all we can to safeguard our democracy. To resist Trump’s threats to abuse state power against what he calls “the enemy within,” Pentagon leaders should issue a directive now reiterating that the military’s oath is to the Constitution. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer must use every minute of the end-of-year legislative session to confirm federal judges and key regulators—none of whom can be removed by the next President.”

  24. Junior and Bettina has been going on for awhile. I posted a link awhile back about the two of them frequenting a restaurant.

Did the gargoyle get paid off not to turn on him and spill all of the mob family’s tea?

The only enjoyment I can think of, is watching them eat each other. How long before the Chief-of-Staff makes an error and he fires her? Elon is safe from Adolf because of the money and racism; the son he wishes he had. Are Junior and Eric jealous of Elon?

  25. https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/10/americas/trump-inspires-brazil-bolsonaro-intl-latam/index.html

“Although barred from running until 2030, Bolsonaro congratulated Trump in a series of videos and postsdrawing comparisons between their paths and sayinghe hoped Trump’s return to power would inspire Brazil “to complete our mission.”
“Over the years, Bolsonaro has leaned into the nickname of “Trump of the tropics,” and both men have built parallel legacies – each facing legal and personal trials, including assassination attempts and indictments, and both elevating their families to roles of political prominence.”
“At the Trump watch party in Mar-a-Lago on election night, Donald Trump Jr. posed for a photo with his Brazilian counterpart, former first son and congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro. On Wednesday, Eduardo told CNN Brasil, “as goes the United States, so goes Brazil.”

Well, it looks like US is now the hub of the new axis powers. ~Woo hoo~  Maybe that asteroid will hit before January 20th, and take us all out.  Poof, we are dinosaurs.  Maybe it will hit that night, at an inaugural ball.

  26. THUNE yields to Trump’s call for recess appointments, says “all options are on the table” to speed up Trump’s Cabinet nominations. Trump is in charge. Shutting down Legislative Branch is at the top of every autocrat’s to-do list.

  27. https://www.mercurynews.com/2024/11/07/elon-musk-not-melania-appears-in-curious-new-trump-family-photo/

“Elon Musk, not Melania or Kimberly Guilfoyle, appears in curious new Trump family photo. But if Melania Trump is missing from the celebratory group photo, which Kai Trump captioned “The whole squad,” there’s a new addition to the family display: Elon Musk.

“Musk has been married more than once and fathered children by three different women. In Musk’s case, he has 11 children. But he’s currently locked in a custody battle with one of those mothers, Claire Boucher, otherwise known as the musician Grimes. She’s the mother of X-AE-A12 and two other children. Musk also went through some relationship drama with Grimes when she learned, after the fact, that he had donated sperm to another of his children’s mothers, Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis, the New York Times reported.

Musk has directed some of his transphobic remarks against his own daughter, who is transgender. In an interview over the summer, Musk said she was “dead, killed by the woke mind virus.”

Wilson responded on Threads by saying that her father is “not a family man,” but “a serial adulterer.” On Threads Wednesday, Wilson also announced that she’s leaving the United States following Trump’s victory, the Daily Beast reported.

She’s concerned about the hostility to transgender people that she’s seen expressed by her father and by Trump and his MAGA supporters. “I don’t see my future being in the United States,” Wilson announced. “Even if he’s only in office for 4 years, even if the anti-trans regulations magically don’t happen, the people who willingly voted this in are not going anywhere anytime soon.”

Wilson’s denunciation of her father’s new presidential friend comes as her father is reportedly building an “unusual family compound” in an upscale residential area of Austin, Texas. The New York Times reported last month that Musk reportedly hopes one day that all 11 of his children and their mothers can live there or at least stop by.

According to the New York Times, the property appears to reflect Musk’s pronatalist ambitions. Pronatalists, from both the Christian right and Silicon Valley, believe that people should have as many children as possible, although they differ on the means of reproduction.

Eschewing traditional marriage, Musk has reportedly offered to donate his sperm to various women for IVF purposes. Musk wants to keep fathering children and to contribute to the world’s population growth…

In the months before Tuesday’s election, Wilson publicly blasted her father for his pronatalist “birth rate stuff.” Wilson said she wouldn’t touch that “weird… breeder (expletive) with a 10-foot pole.” Grimes also has moved away from Austin and is steering “clear” of the compound amid her custody battle.

    Musk is giving the ick.

  28. My 25-year old MAGAt is very excited at tRUMPsky saying there will be full, concealed carry reciprocity in all states…so a-holes from my neck of the woods can take guns into NYC.  FFS!

  29. Craig – great place to explore flavors.  I am a great fan (and cook of) Asian foods.  So much to explore, so much to enjoy.  H-Mart is the best!

  30. Mr. Ivy salmoning tonight as well. Broiled. Pineapple, italian seasoning and mayo, his own creation. Some kind of salsa, avocado and pineapple.

  31. https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/10/europe/keir-starmer-armistice-day-paris-intl/index.html
“The UK prime minister is expected to lay a wreath alongside Macron at war memorials near the Champ-Élysées and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe – a symbol in France commemorating those who died during World War I.”
“The last UK leader thought to have attended commemorations in the French capital was former Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the invitation of General Charles de Gaulle in 1944.”

Yeah, that feels about right. 1944.

  32. They “don’t follow politics,” but they know they can’t have another POC as POTUS, and for sure not a woman.  Only men can lead, even if it’s over a cliff.  Lower grocery prices and more housing couldn’t fix her skin color or lack of a penis.

They think immigrants are stealing jobs, getting entitlements, committing crimes, and buying up all of the houses.
And, the MAGAts did not calm down and get nicer after Tuesday.  They are now emboldened to be more racist and misogynistic, thus the nasty text messages about plantations and horrifying signs about women being property.

May all children be born female from this day forward.
