MAGA’s Dear Leader talked so long last night his convention lasted into a fifth day, at 1.5 hours the longest convention speech of a major party nominee in modern American history.
And as George W. Bush might say, “That was some weird shit”.
MeidasTouch Co-Founder Ben Meiselas: “Donald Trump said the following at his Republican convention speech tonight:
1. He asked if people knew his friend the “late great Hannibal Lecter.”
2. He praised Hungary’s authoritarian leader Viktor Orban.
3. He said North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un missed him.
4. He attacked the UAW Union.
5. He called COVID “the China Virus.”
6. He said he was buying votes in Wisconsin.
7. He thought Scott Walker was still the Governor of Wisconsin and praised his leadership. The Governor is Democrat Tony Evers who did not attend.
8. He said he was going to “take over the Auto Industry.”
9. He called Nancy Pelosi “Crazy Nancy.”
10. He said he wanted to hold the next Republican Convention in Venezuela.
11. He spread lies about the 2020 election.
12. He bragged that the Taliban called him “your excellency” and said they probably don’t call President Biden that.
A couple of instant reactions from notable pundits:
Democrat David Axelrod:
GOP operative Mike Murphy
if you didn’t think modern American politics has just become pro-wrestling, the RNC featured a LITERAL PRO-WRESTLER
We look like idiots
Yep Bink, all they forgot is monster trucks chasing migrants.
Nothing like Kid Rock to calm the nerves of swing voters worried about chaos, fear and loathing in a second Trump presidency.
it’s weird, i’m not seeing any media coverage of Black, Latinx, or Asian-American featured artists and speakers at the RNC
Why is the media not covering ALL of the Black, Latinx , and Asian-American featured artists and speakers from the RNC??
At least they put a Cuban-American on the ticket. That’s pretty historic, eh?
Oh, nevermind, that’s right, they picked the literal self-described “hillbilly”. Hm, i’m starting to notice a theme, here…
Give me a few days and maybe i’ll have decoded this mystery!
Credit where due: they sort of pretended, with a wink a nod, to kind of consider a Black American for VP (but not really)
Historic!

Donald Trump accepted his party’s nomination on the final night of the Republican National Convention following a rowdy speech from Hulk Hogan and a performance by Kid Rock. Meanwhile, viewers continued to be puzzled by the drastic change in Rep. Matt Gaetz’s appearance.

Very Reaganesque, Trump’s messing up facts. I sat through the thing giving Trump a pass as he told his story of Saturday last, then of course Trump went back to his real self. When that dumb bastard said UAW President Shawn Fain should be fired for allowing cars to be built in Mexico, I wanted to chuck a rock through the screen. When he said he was taking over the auto industry, I listened intently. What did he mean? Less government preacher saying the government is seizing production of transportation builders?
Right now Eugene Robinson said Trump’s campaign is not a juggernaut and Trump could be beaten. Of course he can, and must. Now, I am nervous , as the air is out of Joe’s balloon. I am for Joe Biden, but his party is revolting against him…put the old dog down. Well, my Labbie dog Pogo is 15, had a bad spell 2 months ago and I was praying she would not have to be put down…and with TLC, Pogo recovered and now is 100% fine. Joe Biden in down now, and the pressure is intense against him. I say never quit, Joe. Better days are coming. And sorry, I hate to write this, but a Harris led ticket would go down McGovern-like. I never was a fan, wanting Stacey Abrams to get the nod in 2020 for the veep slot. I never got over it. I am for a totally open convention and if my man Joe goes down, I want either Josh Shapiro or Gretchen Whitmer to lead our ballot.
I wasn’t about to try and watch Dumbass last night. There was nothing he could do or say that would surprise or sway me to think differently about him. Reports of his speech confirm my thoughts and decision to avoid it. From what I can tell, other than a new skit about being shot the “speech” was just a collection of his oldies, maybe a little lower energy than his rallies, but with some embellishments. I got a nice nap in instead.
Sometimes when names are stenciled onto things, duffel bags, jackets, and such, shortcuts are taken. Stencils are one size, and a long, almost unpronounceable, name is being painted on, a few letters are not used. As long as you can read “OMXEEAMETTA”, you know who it is. Name plates, paperwork, invitations get the full spelling.
I am so happy I no longer am in the IT world. The sky is blue, the sun shines bright, the birds sing, the butterflies flutter and my dog loves me. Oh, and breakfast was soft boiled eggs, ham and an English Muffin. Life is good.
We’re not really gonna hand these people the nukes again, are we?
😬
craig, were you still working for jimmy carter at the white house during a similar removal attempt by the teddy kennedy crowd? If so, what was it like then with staff who’d been working their tails off 24/7 giving it their all?
today’s anger coming from those giving their all in the administration is understandable and it’s galling to hear the MSM sneers poo-pooing that anger as merely self-interest for power or purposeful denial of reality.

GOPers better beware of a lame duck Prez who still has 5 months more to make use of his newly granted immunity by the supremes.

Pat, yes I was in the bunker for the consequential Kennedy challenge to Carter but barely a rung above coffee boy in the hierarchy. You suggest an interesting comparison. It’s not really a match though. Kennedy vs. Carter was a disastrous power play between party liberals and their centrist president. This wouldn’t be happening to Biden if he wasn’t physically in such bad shape that voters who lean his direction are afraid he can’t handle the job. He is loved within the party but Pelosi is an example for how we can’t be sentimental about taking such a risk in the face of Trumpism.
Damn, Hulk Hogan has become a bad bass player. Kid Rockhead is still an idiot.

Narcissistic Collapse
I don’t know why Trump’s staff thought he could change. Not even a near-death experience can fix Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It can actually make sufferers worse. Psychologists say crisis actually provokes what they call Narcissistic Collapse: “They often become enraged, resulting in impulsivity, intense lashing out, or harm to others. While this reaction isn’t typically intentional, it’s a way for the narcissist to re-establish a sense of control” —
The most common refrain i’m hearing from low-and-medium-info left-leaning voters, Mr. S, is “…shame about his health, he looks bad, feel bad for him”
He ain’t the person, this time. Buck up, we got an election to win
Trump promised a bloodbath. Little did he dream that the Democrats would be doing all the blood.-bathing among themselves. It’d be funny if it weren’t so pathetically predictable.
But, hey……we still have a few weeks, right?
El Binko……..I do hope you right.
What has been seen cannot be unseen even if I didn’t see it. Craig, I have high admiration for your fortitude in enduring all those speeches.
…some really solid Dem hopefuls, good Sir, we might come out of this with a stellar ticket

Trumps dementia was on a national stage & you HAMMER BIDEN?? wtf. You’re the problem
Like I say, I hope you right, but I also believe we’re in for a great deal of of “back room bullshit”.
Nothing would please me more than a smooth transition and having voted for newly elected Presidentt Harris, but I fear she is a main target.
… would vote for his detached ear in a jar of orange liquid.
Tang!!
The only way we win post Biden is Abortion and the fact that the gop is so abysmally rotten to the core. (A gaggle of goobers and goons. But you left out the word “nasty”.)
It could happen.
Russia, Project 2025, Abortion, and the Sadism. Hammer the badtards with those. The “convicted felon” gambit doesn’t seem to get much traction. Might wanna shift from that.
There are something like 4,000 grass-roots Democratic delegates who are going to pick a new nominee, and the elite superdelegates are not allowed to vote on the first ballot. So this likely can’t be a decision forced on the party from on high. Although Kamala certainly has a leg up since almost all of the delegates were handpicked by the Biden-Harris campaign. For anyone wishing to challenge her they’ll need a petition signed by 600 delegates to get on the ballot (and no more than 50 from a single state). Given Harris’s advantage it seems like a good idea for her to open up the balloting so that it isn’t a coronation.

I prefer to see a glass half full. My hope and expectation is those low-to-medium information voters Bink mentioned will see Democrats fixing their problem while Republicans marched lock step to a cult leader who has clearly lost his mind.
Gavin. Newsom hopes he can be the replacement –that’s a big no
No Ted Nugent or Sarah Palin –so tame this year
Pam Keith, Esq.
Dear
@POTUS
This may be the only way to get through to you, but you need to know that WE ARE WITH YOU!!! Stay strong and resolute. DO NOT YIELD. The naysayers will have to bend. DO NOT GIVE IN to this horrible horrible sabotage. We got you. And you will WIN!
Yes and I think those voters are going to see media pundits and “elites” and not even democrat never-trumprrs stabbing Joe in the back and kickin’ him when he’s down.
Sturg,
You meant to say “we’re in for a great deal MORE “back room bullshit”.” right? Schumer, Pelosi etc. are already on that train. And I fear you are right about Kamala being a main target.
Binkster, I agree that there are a bunch of talented Dem hopefuls out there, and Kamala IMHO is among the top 3. I’m not happy about it, but I’m slowly coming to a position of acquiescence to a change at the top of the ticket.
Irony in the Pogo household is that if that becomes the case, both Mrs. P and I will be saying “I told you so, didn’t I?” – She’ll be referring to Joe stepping down and I’ll be referring to Kamala stepping in (she was my choice back in 2020 before Joe stole the show in the primaries).
By the way, the glass is not half full, the glass is empty if Joe leaves. How they get it back to even half full is anybody’s guess.
Sturg, most people aren’t even seeing pundits, elites, whatever. They are making a reasonable judgment based upon watching the man. He is frail and getting worse to the point I almost think it’s elder abuse for those around him to keep pushing him.
I do understand your opinion, and feel certain that you understand mine.
So Que Sarah Sarah, may the best opinion win out. I’m ridin’ with Biden until he’s outa gas and the wheels are in the ditch. And it’s solely because I think he will win, hands down.
Dum spiro spero.
I might not have been there, but Carter was my first presidential vote so I was extremely pissed at that butt drip Ted Kennedy and I was totally right to be because Reagan won. An actor with Alzheimer’s beat out a truly fine American because of an internecine bullshit battle among democrats.
So don’t tell me that democrats are going to come together after Joe gets stabbed in the back because he’s old, because -[News Flash] they won’t.
How’s this Sturg? If we get a new nominee and still lose I give you limitless ‘I told you so’s’
If we lose I’m going to live else where until he’s gone.
So I watched a narcissistic disorder specialist talk about the speech, pointing out a big tell in his story about the shooting, which was how he repeatedly said the crowd didn’t leave because they were “so worried about me”, wanted “to be sure I was okay”. Only a narcissist thinks others getting shot at should actually worry about him.
I won’t get to say I told you so but a few times because they’ll take away my iPhone in the camps. 😎

BREAKING: Campaign Chair Confirms Biden Staying In
I’m pretty sure that ME expressing my opinion here is not what’s keeping Joe on the ticket by the way. If he axed me, I’d tell him but as it is I’m just another old goober yelling at the clouds. This will be decided by back room bullshit in a back room far away.
Deport me to Norway, please. Do I get to keep my iPhone? I’d be lost without it. I wonder if they have little old Jewish Catskills Comedians in Norway.
Part of any campaign exit plan is to defiantly say you’re running up to the very minute you’re not. Gotta get those last few bucks from online loyalists.
Case in point, actual text in this Biden fundraising email I got yesterday: “We’re BEGGING! Trump’s nomination is tonight. Donations to defeat him have PLUMMETED!”
Scenario: Open convention and Biden wins the nomination, showing what party unity actually looks like.
The danger of the MAGAt Party was on full display for those who usually don’t pay attention. Even for MAGAts who only consume filtered moments of rallies, they heard about the (somehow) “late, great Hannibal Lecter” for the first time. They still don’t realize MAGAtitis is about power and greed, selling America down the river to the billionaire class.

Random white guy
Brown folks are sticking with Joe, and I’m sticking with them. Period. White Dems need to get on board. Y’all showing your true selves. Panic and fear should harden your resolve, not your doubts. You act like the world’s ending because things are tough. Brown folks call that “Tuesday”.
After watching clips of him talking about the shooting, more than ever I want some actual medical reports on what hit his ear and what damage it did. We have literally seen or heard nothing but what he says about it.
he’s gonna have to take that gauze off eventually
lol sturge you’re posting “random white guys” voluntarily speaking on behalf of “brown people” that didn’t ask them to, i promise you that guy doesn’t know any “brown people”
Reminds me of the Portlandia character “Doug the Overly-Enthusiastic Feminist Ally”
i was speaking to a young Black male yesterday and he said “trump just says what people don’t want to hear” and as much as i wanted to set him straight, i was in a smile-and-nod kind of mood
Ultimately, a replacement ticket needs “minority” (are we still using that word? Open to suggestions) representation, for sure. Not to pander for votes, but because minorities deserve representation, and women are actually a majority and still don’t get it, so let’s do this
“Sturg, most people aren’t even seeing pundits, elites, whatever. ”
Um…..how you know dat?
Yup I’m just throwing out other opinions which happen to agree with mine. It’s all about yelling at clouds.

New Biden statement:
“I look forward to getting back on the campaign trail next week to continue exposing the threat of Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda while making the case for my own record and the vision that I have for America: one where we save our democracy, protect our rights and freedoms, and create opportunity for everyone. The stakes are high, and the choice is clear. Together, we will win.”
The Dem convention needs to showcase POTUS Joe’s accomplishments, no matter who gets the nomination.
I hope folks aren’t stupid enough to bail on him.
Correction, I hope the mostly, white men who have bailed on him will do an about face.
If he is not the nominee, it would be disastrous if they also bailed on Harris.
If folks are so worried about him being able to do another four years, Harris is ready to step in. She can then tap Buttegeig or Beshear or…

i’ll volunteer to write his withdrawal speech, it will beat the heck out of that boilerplate camp statement
Oh how I hope it does not come to this but technically under DNC rules the delegates do not have to vote for the one that brung them. Pertinent to our Carter-Kennedy discussion that change was made by Kennedy partisans reacting to the previously strict rules that helped Carter beat him.
Using the word “minorities” saved you from having to list them all. I don’t think it’s offensive yet.
CC. Guess what……Murphy’s Law.
I happened to see in a flash overview a little column headline somewhere this morning. I thought washpoo but it might have been another media. That said, it was retiring was as hard in politics as sports. Quite true. You devote your life, twenty-four/seven, to an activity and you reach to point of the locker room door is closed. Watch sports players tearfully say goodbye.
Politics is even harder to leave. You spend decades in office and you do not have to leave. The Congress is quite full of ancient people, a few older than the Greatest Generation. Towards the end you see them wheeled in for a vote, the aide helps raise their hand, and they are wheeled out to be rehooked up to some device or something.
Telling a president he needs to toss in the towel cannot be a pleasant experience, especially if the president is a high performer even if he stutters a bit.
I am with Joe all the way. If he decides to retire, so be it, I will vote for the team after him, and it better be Harris.
I am against term limits. Totally against those for elected politicians. I am for term limits on appointed officials, like for the court formeerly known as supreme.
If Joe does resign, I bet it’s after the next debate because no old trouper worth his salt would leave the stage without a rematch…..resign or no, he ain’t going down with that last debate being his swan song. That ain’t personal….its just business.
BB,
Couldn’t’ve said it better.
Zoe is certainly no hot head headline grabber (and a very close Bay Area ally of Pelosi). The fact that she’s publicly doing this shows he’s not giving in or this pressure campaign would shut down to let him implement an exit plan…
Rep. Zoe Lofgren asks Biden to step aside in letter
My interesting experience after I left you was finding myself in the middle of a police lockdown, guns and automatic rifles drawn, while they searched the building for two suspects. My “station” was among the 10 or so cops – not sure how or why that was the circumstance, they told me to just sit still – but it was a learning opportunity. They did their jobs, for which I was grateful. No suspects were found and they are presumably still at large.
Part and parcel of the times we live in. Anything can happen at any minute.
Delaware Democratic Sen. Chris Coons, a close ally of President Joe Biden, said Friday he believes the president is “weighing what he should weigh, which is, who is the best candidate to win in November.” Coons declined to delve into his personal conversations with the president but said, “I am confident he is hearing what he needs to hear from colleagues, from the public.”
Joe is all for railroads but not like this.
You think YOU got problems….since I quit working the neighbor lady is trying to turn me into her personal handyman. Worse, when I help her with something she wants to offer me $20 like “Oh boy! now I can go to McDonalds.” I just never take it.

Theater Play of the Week
The Clouds (Ancient Greek: Νεφέλαι, Nephelai) is a Greek comedy play written by the playwright Aristophanes. A lampooning of intellectual fashions in classical Athens, it was originally produced at the City Dionysiain 423 BC and was not as well received as the author had hoped, coming last of the three plays competing at the festival that year. It was revised between 420 and 417 BC and was thereafter circulated in manuscript form.[3]
Retrospectively, The Clouds can be considered the world’s first extant “comedy of ideas”[5] and is considered by literary critics to be among the finest examples of the genre.[6] The play also, however, remains notorious for its caricature of Socrates, and is cited by Plato in the Apology as a contributing factor to the philosopher’s trial and execution.[7][8]
Sideline book of the Week:
THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY Out of the Spirit of Music,
by FW Nietzsche
Very quid pro apropos
Nietzsche found in classical Atheniantragedy an art form that transcended the pessimism and nihilism of a fundamentally meaningless world. Originally educated as a philologist, Nietzsche discusses the history of the tragic form and introduces an intellectual dichotomy between the Dionysian and the Apollonian (very loosely: reality as disordered and undifferentiated by forms versus reality as ordered and differentiated by forms). Nietzsche claims life always involves a struggle between these two elements, each battling for control over the existence of humanity. In Nietzsche’s words, “Wherever the Dionysian prevailed, the Apollonian was checked and destroyed…. wherever the first Dionysian onslaught was successfully withstood, the authority and majesty of the Delphic god Apollo exhibited itself as more rigid and menacing than ever.” And yet neither side ever prevails due to each containing the other in an eternal, natural check or balance.
How bout dat….same old damn story.

An AR-15 by definition uses a .223 round, a little smaller than quarter of an inch
So, only a thousand of an inch bigger than a traditional .22 varmint rifle, BUT the casing is much bigger, holds more powder, which makes for a faster bullet that tears through multiple targets, which is why they are so dangerous
ban .223 rounds, been saying it for years, no 2nd amendment violation in the slightest (until the Roberts court contrives a rationalization otherwise)
