In the Footsteps of FDR

Courtesy of our trail friend Ivy Green, here’s a history reminder from Robert Reich:

On the eve of his 1936 reelection, President Franklin D. Roosevelt told the American people that in his first term of office:
“We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace—business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.
They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred.
I should like to have it said of my first Administration that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my second Administration that in it these forces met their master.”
FDR won by a landslide.

Without yet looking at the Andy Rooney clip, Andy didn’t like things that were things. Now to see what reasons he cited.

Hahaha – Andy was a gift.

“isn’t it past your jail time?”

Jimmy Kimmel slam dunked Pumpkin Head on live TV in front of a billion or so Earthlings, after reading Trump’s absurd attack on him and the Oscars:

“Blah, blah, blah … Okay, now, see if you can guess which former president just posted that. Anyone? No? Well, thank you, President Trump. Thank you for watching, I’m surprised you’re still up — isn’t it past your jail time?

Trump’s post:

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC “talent,” George Slopanopoulos. He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous. Also a really bad politically correct show tonight, and for years – Disjointed, boring, and very unfair. Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them. Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Looks like Trump got the message Viktor personally delivered from Putin over the weekend at Mar-A-Lago.

“He will not give a penny in the Ukraine-Russia war,” Orbán told Hungarian state media Sunday. “Therefore, the war will end, because it is obvious that Ukraine can not stand on its own feet.”

Rick and I watched the Oscars all the way to the end for the first time is about 35 years.
Thanks for starting an hour earlier!

Loved Kimmel’s political jokes!

When Kimmel started reading a message from a troll live at the Oscars, I wondered why he picked one from some rando.  Then, he said “Make American Great Again,” and I knew it was Adolf.

It is, indeed, past his jail time.

Waiting for E Jean Carroll’s attorneys to weigh in on tRUMPsky defaming her on Saturday, just a day after posting bond for the last case she won.

Putin has already installed folks in Estonia and Belarus, so after Ukraine falls, he will attack Poland. If tRUMPsky is the cotter pin, I hope he gets pulled very soon.

Why hasn’t LP made a big, old ad delineating the horrors in Project 2025?

ps – Shame on the Pope for suggesting Ukraine should wave the white flag and negotiate with Putin.

Carroll has another half hour or so to raise issues about Trump’s appeal bond deal, but even if she doesn’t the judge later today will consider whether to approve it. Wonder if anyone will rise the Russian connection we discussed Saturday;

“FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanaugh issued an apology to a crowd at the Christian Cultural Center last week after state Attorney General Letitia James was booed by firefighters during a promotion ceremony at the Brooklyn church Thursday.”

“As James walked to the podium at the church Thursday, she was booed by multiple firefighters, some of whom chanted “Trump.”

“In a statement, a spokesperson for the department said the FDNY will be investigating the incident. “We’re looking into those who clearly broke department regulations. It has nothing to do with politics. It’s about professionalism at an official event held in a house of worship,” the spokesperson said.

I wonder if those firefighters are union, and if they know tRUMPsky would bust their union?

This is who I think was marching in black face masks, carrying nazi flags in Nashville; firefighters and police. They seemed young and very in shape.

I’m afraid we should all be prepared for regional, civil wars from November, on. How do we un-brainwash folks?

Thanks, Pat! The FDR-era resonates with me, I think it’s because growing up my only reading material was my mom’s book collection of girls’ novels set in the 1930s and 40s and my dad’s World Book Encyclopedias 1936. I am “of that era.”

Ivy – much of my life surroundings, into late elementary school, was from the thirties and forties.  WWII had interrupted the changing life of the forties into the fifties.  Dick and Jane was my beginning.  We did not have television so that distraction was not available. At my grandparents, paternal, were books for my age from the twenties and early thirties, extremely racist, but the “norm” of the era. I thank my mother for keeping us from going there.  She taught us, my brother and sister, about being equal and care for others.

Orange Adolf’s admiration of despots, along with his campaign which consists of fear-mongering and lies, has an appeal limited to xenophobes and other hateful types who try to hide behind The Bible.
It’s a stark contrast to President Biden’s campaign of expansion, liberty, and a bright future.

“Sex trafficking victim says Sen. Katie Britt telling her story during SOTU rebuttal is ‘not fair’

“Jacinto told CNN that Mexican politicians took advantage of her by using her story for political purposes and that it’s happened again in the United States.”

“I work as a spokesperson for many victims who have no voice, and I really would like them to be empathetic: all the governors, all the senators, to be empathetic with the issue of human trafficking because there are millions of girls and boys who disappear all the time. People who are really trafficked and abused, as she [Britt] mentioned. And I think she [Britt] should first take into account what really happens before telling a story of that magnitude,” Jacinto said.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-floats-cutting-retirement-spending-drawing-quick-pushback-biden-rcna142776
“Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump opened the door Monday to “cutting” spending under Social Security and Medicare…”

“So first of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting,” Trump responded. “And in terms of, also, the theft and the bad management of entitlements — tremendous bad management of entitlements — there’s tremendous amounts of things and numbers of things you can do.”

“The former president didn’t get specific about how he’d change the retirement programs.”

He’s a con man. He’s a grifter. He speaks in tossed word salad. His plan is completely taking over everything, destroying democracy and making everyone his slave. He is a menace to society. He is a traitor, as is everyone who follows him.

i’ve determined the only way to fix American electoral politics is to open all primaries and make voting in the primaries requisite for voting in the general

Only extremists vote in the primaries, so only extremists get sent to the general, so only extremists get elected

“Donald Trump’s claim that he “didn’t have to” hand over classified documents that were being sought under federal subpoena has been leaped upon as proof he is admitting wrongdoing.”

“Joanne Carducci, better known as the popular political social media account JoJo from Jerz, said: “So, we’re just supposed to what, forget that he originally claimed the documents he says he knew he had and was allowed to keep, were ‘planted by the FBI.'”

“India has announced rules that would allow it to implement a controversial citizenship bill that excludes Muslims.”

“The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs announced the rules Monday, ahead of India’s general election in the spring, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek a rare third term in power.”

“The Citizenship (Amendment) Act provides a fast-track to citizenship for immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan – provided they are not Muslim. The controversial law would apply to religious minorities persecuted on religious grounds, including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians.”

I can see a version of that catching on here with the MAGAts

Blue Bronc, in Wilmington near the airport, there was a WWII-themed restaurant named Air Transport Command. Sadly, it closed a while back but its decor was like a time-capsule to the 40s and a step back into my grandmother’s living room.

So much is glossed over about the ten years after WWII.  Change was happening, but it took time.  Autos were made from the 1941 molds. Television was not anything big. The baby boom was happening, but a lot of new parents were living with mom and dad.  It was not a switch flipped and va là modern.  The GI’s had to go to school, high school and college.  Many were still in Korea fighting. Housing had to be developed and built.
But, the change coming was exciting.  I like to refer to life in the postwar era as the black and white version.  Starting around nineteen sixty the world changed to color.  Lots of color. Modern chemicals made colors that were not possible earlier. It was an explosion of color. This is what I think a lot of people see as postwar, not the black and white edition.

You nailed it, Blue Bronc. Our first color tv was so my dad – who’d already been diagnosed with the C-word we weren’t allowed to say – could watch the Rose Parade.

The local BBQ place near me always has their one TV on FOX News. I stopped by for takeout tonight. The 5:00 FOX News headlines were: “Biden begins his angry man campaign” and “Biden spent 30M to yell at us about Trump”.

Oh, I can barely stand to walk in there whenever I go to that BBQ Hi Blue! Our far right county commissioners hired a failed Congressional candidate last January to be the lead county administrator. They fired him for cause a few weeks ago. Lawsuits of discrimination against him as well as charges of sexual harassment in the workplace. This guy had his job for a year and he declined all interview requests. Then he got fired and he spoke with one of the local news stations right after it happened.

https://breakingdefense.com/2024/01/in-first-uk-test-fires-13-per-strike-dragonfire-laser-weapon-against-aerial-targets/

“A high energy laser, estimated to cost less than £10 ($13) a shot, has hit airborne targets at a test range in northwest Scotland, the first time the UK said it has achieved such a firing.”

“Despite the innovation lab not disclosing which targets were specifically hit during the trials, London’s Times newspaper reported that DragonFire engaged “drones from several positions miles away.” It also claimed Dstl scientists have forecast the weapon could be operational off a Royal Navy ship within five years.”

“The High cost of naval-based missiles have been on display in the Red Sea recently like when the UK’s HMS Diamond Type 45 destroyer, the USS Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, US destroyers and F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets repelled a barrage of 18 drones, two anti-ship cruise missiles and a single anti-ship ballistic missile, per The Times.”

“The British destroyer used Sea Viper missiles, estimated to cost more than £1 million ($1.3 million) per unit to hit several of the incoming targets. The relatively cheap costs of drones makes for a huge disparity between conventional weapons destroying swarms, and militaries the world over have been eyeing laser weapons as a way to take on such a role at a fraction of the cost.”
