Sunday Serendipity

Yesterday was Independence Day for our neighbors to the South.

In honor of the day, I found this piece by composer, Carlos Chavez

Xochipilli, An Imagined Aztec Music

Xochipilli is scored for ten players: piccolo, flute, E♭ clarinet, trombone, and six percussionists playing a variety of instruments, many of Aztec origin: teponaztlihuéhuetlomichicahuaztli. The piccolo and flute deputize for Aztec flutes of bone or clay, the E♭ clarinet represents the clay ocarina, and the trombone is used as a substitute for the Aztec conch-shell trumpet.

In Aztec mythology, Xochipilli is the god associated with flowers, music, and dance, as is also Macuilxóchitl. “Their difference is esoteric. Macuilxochitl is the imperceptible god, an entity beyond the scope of human thought, a timeless being dwelling in the cosmos. Xochipilli is the embodiment of the same spirit on Earth, perceived in the visible, tangible, and edible world”

Enjoy, Jack

Loop street closures remain as Mexican Independence Day celebrations continue – Chicago Sun-Times (suntimes.com)

here’s more on it from arizona republic:

Mexican Independence Day: A celebration dear to Mexicans in the US (msn.com)

How is Independence Day celebrated in Mexico?
September is known as the patriotic month in Mexico since the 16th commemorates the beginning of the fight for independence against Spanish forces, who controlled the country for more than 300 years.
As the days go by, the streets fill with street vendors selling Mexican flags of different sizes, rattles, and typical clothing — folkloric skirts, peasant blouses, shawls, zarapes and huaraches.
In schools, classrooms are decorated with green, white and red papel picado, and patriotic parties are organized where students gather to share Mexican dishes and watch ballet folklórico.

What is ‘El Grito de Dolores’? How the fight began
This celebration is characterized by the performance of “El Grito de Dolores” — “grito” meaning battle cry — inspired in the early morning of Sept. 16, 1810, when the Catholic priest Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bells of his parish and called on the Mexican population to take up arms against the Spanish authorities in a fight that would last 11 years.
Every year, a performance of the battle cry is carried out in the National Palace located in Mexico’s capital. Inside the building in the Ambassadors Hall, a military escort made up of students from the Heroic Military College delivers the flag to the current president of Mexico while the national anthem plays.
Later, the president approaches the balcony and addresses the attendees in the Zócalo esplanade to ring out the same cry, which includes the names of the heroes of independence, such as Miguel Hidalgo, José María Morelos y Pavón, Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez and Ignacio Allende.
Cities and organizations around the country plan events focused on this celebration for people to come together and learn about Mexican culture.

How is Mexican Independence Day celebrated in the US?
For the second consecutive year, the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix will hold the “El Grito” ceremony at the Arizona Capitol.
The General Consulate of Mexico, located in major cities such as Las Vegas, New York and Miami, also organizes community events that feature a performance of the battle cry. Similarly, several universities, media groups and local organizations prepare events throughout cities where large concentrations of Mexicans reside.
From El Grito ceremonies and concerts featuring famous Mexican musicians to art exhibitions and festivals for the whole family, the day is always commemorated in a massive way and usually aims to educate and emphasize the importance of the date for those who reside in the United States.

fun tidbit: xochipilli must have been the original flower child according to wiki

Xōchipilli [ʃoːt͡ʃiˈpilːi] is the god of art, games, dance, flowers, and song in Aztec mythology. His name contains the Nahuatl words xōchitl (“flower”) and pilli (either “prince” or “child”) and hence means “flower prince”.

from that same wiki link:

Xochipilli
God of love, lord of flowers, young men and fertility, patron of homosexuality

Yes, the media is definitely trying to steer the ageist narrative.

What they should be noting, if they want to talk about age (and folks do not physically and mentally age at the same rate),  is that Republicans want to kill Social Security and Medicare.

Talk about policy!

Sturg, New Republic should have noted that 7 other polls in the same time frame showed the same tied result as WSJ, neither ahead outside the margin of error. They weren’t all paid for by Trump.

It does us no good to ignore that there is a problem. Also does us no good to assume the problem is not fixable and the whole ticket should be dumped. That’s just silly.

There are subgroups Biden won in 2020 that need attention, like I said yesterday — he is slightly underperforming among non-whites (especially Hispanics) and non-college whites compared to last time. Get their numbers up a few points and he’s back to the 2020 margin of victory.

Amateur hour in Congress | The Seattle Times

Hey, kids, get out your pencils. It’s time for a multiple-choice quiz.
Question one: Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy has opened an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden because:
A) McCarthy is bowing to pressure from former President Donald Trump, who has been pushing for Biden’s impeachment to boost his own campaign to get back into the White House before he is sent to prison.
B) McCarthy is appeasing the militant right-wing members of his caucus, who are still threatening to remove him from the speaker’s job if they do not get everything they demand.
C) McCarthy sincerely believes Biden has committed a high crime or misdemeanor.
Answer: It is either A or B and probably both A and B, but it sure ain’t C.
Question two: McCarthy decided to launch this impeachment process without a vote of the entire House (even though he criticized his predecessor, Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for taking a similar unilateral action) because:
A) McCarthy suddenly decided Pelosi was a real smart gal after all.
B) McCarthy did not want to force his caucus to take a tough vote because he always puts the welfare of others ahead of his own political career.
C) McCarthy had no other choice because, since a few members of his caucus are not showboating extremists, he probably lacked the votes he needed to get the impeachment inquiry approved.
Answer: If you guessed C, you are correct. If you guessed A or B, you have likely never even heard of Kevin McCarthy.
And, finally, question three: What is the best characterization for the majority of House Republicans:
A) Trump sycophants.
B) Amateurs who barely understand how the federal government works.
C) A clown show.
Answer: All of the above.

NBC Meet The Press today should be a model for how legit media interviews this chronic liar. Firstly, tape the interview, do not go live! Some fact-checking by the host during the interview without getting bogged down, provide correction or context for major falsehoods before and after the breaks, follow up with an online analysis detailing and refuting each lie.

NBC: “At least 11 different points during the interview, former President Trump flubbed numbers, misstated facts or omitted critical context”

Sturg, I don’t know much about her or her prospects but I was impressed about how she handled Pumpkin Head. If you get too confrontational with him he disrupts the whole interview and nothing is accomplished. She found about that still managed to press him in important ways. For example she boxed him into saying he acted on “his own instincts” in the election rigging schemes not solely on the advice of lawyers, which was going to be his defense in the criminal cases. That was clever on her part because she took advantage of one of his weaknesses, an inability to acknowledge credit to anyone other than himself.

Those that still back tRUMPsky, well, there’s no hope for them.  They are fearful/hateful, racists who hide behind a very, cherry-picked Bible.   (Where is loving your neighbor? Where is welcoming the stranger?)  They are Christo-fascists and they hate the very idea of a true democracy.  Then, of course, there are the uber-wealthy who play into that fear/hate to stay in power and line their pockets even more.

Reduced economic pressure in day-to-day life easily helps Biden, but the wasted opportunity is letting Republicans control the narrative about their plans to destroy our country.

The MAGAts don’t care about the environment or a woman’s personal freedom.   They will, however, care about the safety of Social Security and Medicare.  Everyone 50-plus will vote against tRUMPsky (or at least stay home) if they realize what’s at stake for them personally.

It’s not just about how terrible tRUMPsky was and is, it’s how the heartlessness that has always infected the Republican Party has come to a head for all to see.

Recent polling conducted by frequent pollster YouGov in collaboration with CBS News found a massive majority of young people in support of President Joe Biden heading into the 2024 election. Young people here means individuals under the age of 30 (ending at 18, when Americans are first able to vote). A full 65 percent from that group backed Biden.

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/09/governor-kristi-noem-god-fearing-family-woman-and-corey-lewandowski-trump-creep-reportedly-had-yearslong-affair

“The Daily Mail has published an explosive report that South Dakota governor Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski, a former Donald Trump aide, have been having a secret affair “for years”—at least since 2019.”

“A “family values” Republican, Noem has three children with her husband, Bryon. They’ve been married for over 30 years. Lewandowski married his wife, Alison, in 2005, and they have four children.”

“Noem stoked speculation that she’s angling to be Trump’s running mate for 2024 with an early endorsement of the indicted man for president.”

“The Daily Mail claimed it has a long list of receipts including “stays at luxury resorts where their intimacy was observed and noted.” They allegedly took private planes on donors’ dimes, and would disappear frequently.”

“Lewandowski became a key adviser to Noem by 2019, and they would travel frequently together. Per the Daily Mail, “In the months leading up to the 2020 election, Noem and Lewandowski became virtually inseparable companions on the Trump campaign trail. By then, their relationship was an open secret at the White House and among high-level GOP lobbyists and political consultants.”

“Rumors of their alleged affair surfaced briefly in 2021, via far-right conservative website American Greatness, but Noem issued a strong rebuke of the story.”

“However, after a scandal in which Lewandowski allegedly propositioned a donor’s wife at a Benihana, he was supposedly cut loose from Noem’s team. “Corey was always a volunteer, never paid a dime (campaign or official),” Ian Fury, Noem’s communications director, said in a statement at the time. “He will not be advising the governor in regard to the campaign or official office.” The Daily Mail claimed this was not true. Lewandowski continued working for Noem, and she would, according to a source, “make excuses for his behavior and apologize to staffers for him.”

https://www.sdstandardnow.com/home/toms-piece-on-noemlewandowski

“We really don’t care who Kristi Noem is sleeping with. That’s a personal issue between her, her husband Bryon and her supposed lover Corey Lewandowski and his wife.”

“What’s really troubling is the people she is in bed with politically. That’s what really impacts our state and nation.”

“While Noem attacked The Daily Mail — like her mentor, Donald Trump, she is always on offense — it is noteworthy there was no blanket denial from her, her spokesman Ian Fury or from Lewandowski.”

“The report also says Byron Noem moved out of the governor’s residence in Pierre two years ago. I do know that a moving van was spotted at the home at that time.”

“Lewandowski, a former Trump campaign manager, has a very shady reputation. He reportedly had an affair with Hope Hicks, a young, attractive blonde who was a campaign press secretary. Trump reportedly praised Lewandowski for his affair in his typically crude manner.”

“Noem is a strong person, personally and politically. She rides motorcycles and horses, shoots guns, raises bison. She first ran for office in 2006 and has never lost an election, a remarkable run of success almost unmatched in South Dakota history, and in the last few years, she has set her sights on national office.”

“Her involvement with Lewandowski, who has a long, troubling record of offensive behavior, was linked to her goal of being president or vice president. He has provided her a boost onto the national stage, positioning her as “America’s Governor.”

“Noem does have a strange track record of associating with deplorable men with track records of abusive behavior against women. In 2022, she supported Nebraska Republican gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster, who had multiple accusations of assaulting women and making unwanted advances.”

“Noem’s strong support for Trump has helped boost her national reputation.
Lewandowski and Trump have a lot in common, since the former president has been accused of sexual assault by more than 20 women, and even bragged about it before he was elected president.”

Occupy Democrats
BREAKING: Special Counsel Jack Smith scores a MASSIVE win as Donald Trump slips up at today’s Meet the Press interview incriminates himself by taking full responsibility for the Big Lie after the host bravely forces him to answer her brilliant question. It all started when host Kristen Welker asked Trump whether he was listening to his lawyers or his “own instincts” when he decided to cook up his Big Lie that he is now facing multiple federal felony charges over. At this point, Trump sensed danger, so he tried to pivot to bragging about the “many numerous books” that have “been written about how the election was rigged.” At this point, the host went for the jugular, cutting Trump off and asking, “But were you calling the shots?” Trump tried ignoring her, once again launching back into his rant about the “many books” that back his Big Lie. Undaunted, host Kristen Welker didn’t back down, again cutting Trump off and asking, “Were YOU calling the shots though?” At this point, Trump became visibly upset and snapped back, “Excuse me!” before AGAIN shamelessly going back to rambling about the Big Lie books. Unfortunately for Trump, Welker wasn’t about to let him get away with it, and she again looked Trump dead in the face and asked, “But where YOU calling the shots though, Mr President!?” At this point, Trump had no choice but the mumble nervously, “Ughhh… as to whether or not I believed that the election was rigged? Sure! It was MY decision! There you have it, folks — and straight from the horse’s mouth. Special Counsel Jack Smith just got even more incriminating evidence to show Judge Chutkan — nothing less than Trump himself admitting that he was the one “calling the shots” in his Big Lie conspiracy to steal Biden’s win.

What if a surgeon instead of stopping the spread of a disease accelerates its spread? Then, after the surgery, the surgeon gives the patient a fact sheet of all the things the surgeon could have done during the surgery. When a journalist like Kristen Welker from NBC interviews Trump but refuses to do her job, she spreads the disease of fascism. By sending us to a website to read the fact check you should have done, but didn’t do during the interview, you are the surgeon who makes the patient sicker. In this case the country becomes sicker and more divided. It shows us you either don’t understand your job or you are intentionally gaslighting us to appease Trump.
