I wonder if that Drive-in movie mentioned in the Lonnie Holley story was the one on Shades Mountain.    If it was he probably saw as we slingshot cherry bombs to explode in the air over all the cars.  (You have to tickle the dragon by waiting for the fuse to burn down short enough so the c-bomb explodes in the air and doesn’t fall to the ground. We weren’t making little sling shots you could carry in your hip pocket, these things were huge, with strips cut out of old inner tubes. )

Hah!  It was Joe who referred to Tommy as Tuber-vil yesterday while he was pointing out Republican hypocrisy, taking credit for infrastructure act development after voting against it. Chuckleheads. Good on ya Joe.

Sturge, Mr. Holley probably picked up trash at the Fair Park Drive-in in Fairfield. One of the lost AL drive-ins in this article. That was in his stomping grounds. Until they tore it down to build K-Mart our family would go to the Roebuck Drive-in. After that my buddies and I would go to the Center Point Drive-in. (Some fond memories there – friends smuggled in in the trunk, beer too. Drive-in double dating …) It met its fate in 1973 when the tornado that decimated Center Point blew the screen to pieces. When that one blew through I was playing cards with my childhood best friend in his new mobile home in Tarrant City, a mile from the ground path of that storm.

Remember those huge air raid sirens they’d periodically set off? This things were scary.

SCOTUS strikes down affirmative action for college applications

Craig – it was written on the bathroom wall when we saw the less than not bad/horrible decisions of the last week.  There are only a few ways of solving this issue, adding more seats is the best.  And, logically makes sense to have the circuits equal to the justices (no longer capitolized) of the court formerly known as supreme.

Since college is so expensive, another way to keep gates closed to some institutions won’t matter as much as it would have even ten years ago. There are so many online classes for degrees and certifications (skills are more valuable than paper), and so many are foregoing formal education and jumping into entrepreneurial endeavors. The university system is archaic and it’s time for a shake up.

Sturg, in the bedroom communities around East Bumfuck they still have those air raid sirens to summon the VFD members to the firehouse to get out to the trailer or shack that’s burning to the ground.

Gee, it’s almost like the conservative SCOTUS is approaching their docket with an agenda, like it was planned from the outset 🤔

Judicial activism for them, not for you

”Public Trust in SCOTUS at Historical Low, SCOTUS Couldn’t Give a Shit”

It is that time of the year.  I think Jumbo, UAE and Total teams look good for le Tour.  But, there are a lot of kilometers until the finale.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/29/investing/donald-trump-spac-truth-social-insider-trading/index.html

“Federal prosecutors arrested three investors on Thursday on insider trading charges related to a deal to take former President Donald Trump’s media business public.”

“According to the indictment, the three individuals together made more than $22 million in illegal profits in October 2021 by purchasing shares in Digital World Acquisition Corporation after secretly learning about the blank-check firm’s plan to buy Truth Social owner Trump Media & Technology Group.”

“There is no allegation that Donald Trump had any involvement at all in the alleged insider trading.”

“However, the new charges add to the controversy surrounding the Trump deal, which has raised eyebrows from legal experts and drawn scrutiny from regulators and prosecutors.”

To be continued, I’d wager,

A weird twist I hadn’t seen coming they exempted military schools from this affirmative action ban??? They stuck that in a footnote with no explanation.

Blue Bronc

Craig – it maybe that the military academies are job offers not open to the world like a university is.  The cadets are paid to be in training and then once trained, successful graduation, they are commissioned as regular military.  If they wash out they do not get the degree.

Poobah, that’s just weird.

BB, Yep, queue them up.  Ineos and Bahrain Victorious also look good based upon their results in the Giro.  With Steff Cras questionable (both he and Sagan are listed on the TDF website but I assume he’s not fully recovered yet from the Criterium du Dauphine crash) I’m not clear who the team leader will be for TotalEnergy – they’ve got 3 strong riders – with Peter Sagan having dodged jail for his DUI he’s probably the presumptive leader, Cras being a bit questionable and Mathieu Burgaudeau being particularly strong in the mountains. Time will tell.🙄

The conservatives have bit off more than they can chew.  They been pushing for this shit a long time…….
Well, it may take a little while yet but because they’re so stupid and greedy the backlash will soon engulf them. There’ll be wailin’ and gnashin’ ob de teet when they find out what kind of progressive shit is rolling down the pike at them.

Expecting SCOTUS decisions tomorrow against gay rights and student loans. That makes a clean sweep for Dem turnout 2024: Republicans against women, blacks, gays and young people.

Only clue in the Court’s footnote exempting military schools was that they weren’t at issue in the underlying cases. But neither were religious schools, trade schools or other types of schools and they got no exemption. Maybe their position is blacks can get preference for going to war but not Harvard.

https://www.texastribune.org/2023/06/29/texas-college-top-ten-percent-plan-supreme-court/

“With race-based admissions no longer an option, states may imitate Texas top 10% plan”

“More than 20 years ago, when the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals banned the use of affirmative action in college admissions in its jurisdiction, those trying to diversify Texas public universities panicked, fearing that the ruling would undo years of modest progress they had made increasing the number of students of color at the state’s top public universities.”

“The impact of the law was immediate. At the University of Texas at Austin, Hispanic enrollment dropped by 15% in one year, while Black enrollment dropped by 25%.”

“To curb that decline, Texas lawmakers created a “race-neutral” program known as The Top 10% Plan, aimed at giving a broader group of Texas students opportunities to attend state universities by automatically admitting those who graduated in the top 10% of their high school classes.”

“Texas’ Top 10% Plan was developed in 1997 with the help of Hispanic activists and lawmakers after the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that banned the use of race in admissions in the three states within its jurisdiction, including Texas.”

https://www.texastribune.org/2023/06/27/texas-career-technical-education/

“More than half of jobs in the state require a credential higher than a high school diploma but lower than a bachelor’s degree, according to a report from July 2022.”

“The rise of these programs partially stems from industries and jobs increasingly requiring specialized licenses or credentials, even if it’s not a college degree. For students, these programs are attractive because they allow them to get hands-on practice and, in some cases, paid work experience as they work toward a credential.”

“…people with two-year associate degrees and certificates in highly technical and in-demand fields, such as engineering technologies, can earn more than people with bachelor’s degrees in some lower-paying industries.”

Despite changing times and ways to mitigate the damage if today’s SCOTUS ruling, it definitely sent a message about the direction ~conservatives~ will try to steer our country.

Hmmm, did Clarence Thomas get where he is thanks to affirmative action?

blueINdallas

https://www.newsweek.com/did-clarence-thomas-benefit-affirmative-action-struck-down-1809976

Yep!

“The worst thing about affirmative action is that it created a Clarence Thomas who benefited from the program and now is in a position where he’s going to deny many young African American talented individuals an opportunity,” Johnson said.

“In 1971, Justice Thomas was admitted to Yale’s Law School as part of the affirmative action practice according to PBS, which reported that the school wanted 10 percent of its incoming class that year to be students of color.”

Way to pull that ladder up behind you, Clarence!

I really loved that interview between Nicole and Joe.  The analysis afterwards with Rachel, Joy, and Eddie was great too.  I feel better from having watched it.
