maybe not in florida with ads like val’s

NBC:

“In the Senate I’ll protect Florida from bad ideas, like defunding the police. That’s just crazy,” Demings said in the ad, shared exclusively with NBC News. She ends the 30-second spot saying “It’s time to send a cop on the beat to the Senate.”

The ad, which will also air in Spanish, will be seen across the state as part of an eight-figure buy, according to the Demings campaign. The spot focuses solely on Demings’ work as a police officer and her time leading the police department in Orlando, where she was the first woman to serve as chief.

speaking of crimes and a different kind of is john last night

John Oliver discusses some of the world’s most prestigious museums, why they contain so many stolen goods, the market that continues to illegally trade antiquities, and a pretty solid blueprint for revenge.

rollingstone even noted it in  John Oliver Goes Hard at Indiana Jones (msn.com)

John Oliver and his Last Week Tonight crew decided to do a longer-than-normal show all about museums. Which on the face of it sounds like a terrible idea, but it actually worked because Oliver’s focus was on the theft by Western colonizers of other countries’ antiquities, and today’s Western museums that are none too keen to give it all back.
Here’s a pretty upsetting fact: In 2018 a French report concluded that more than 90 percent of Africa’s cultural heritage is currently in museums — specifically, museums that are located on the continent of Africa. Countries there and around the world are today demanding the return of antiquities plundered by colonizers over the centuries, from gigantic Indian diamonds shellacked to British crowns to Chadian wood funeral poles displayed in Paris.

Capitol attack officer Fanone hits out at ‘weasel’ McCarthy in startling interview | Books | The Guardian

In an extraordinarily candid and profane interview with Rolling Stone, Michael Fanone – the former Washington police officer who was seriously hurt at the US Capitol during the January 6 attack – called the Republican House leader, potentially the next speaker, a “fucking weasel bitch”.
Fanone said past Republican giants would be unimpressed with Kevin McCarthy.
“I think at night, when the lights are turned off, Abe Lincoln and Ronald Reagan have some pretty choice words to say about the fact that they have to hang on Kevin McCarthy’s wall,” Fanone said.
“They did some fucking above-average things. And they’ve got to adorn the wall of this fucking weasel bitch named Kevin McCarthy, with his fake fucking spray-on tan, whose fucking claim to fame, at least in my eyes, is the fact that he amassed a collection of Donald Trump’s favorite-flavored Starburst, put them in a Mason jar, and presented them to fucking Donald Trump.
“What the fuck, dude?”
Fanone’s remarks came as he promoted his memoir, Hold the Line, which will be published next week.
[…]
Fanone said he thought most of those who physically attacked the Capitol might eventually be brought to account but doubted that those who incited the riot, from Trump down, would face the consequences of their actions.
“To me,” he said, “every last one of them should have been charged with sedition. These guys love 1776” – the year of the American revolution – “so much. They should be damned glad we’re not in 1776 because I’m pretty sure they would all end up on the fucking business end of a musket or the gallows.”

Sound familiar?  Fill in the blank…
(courtesy NYT)

For months, Mr. _________ has criticized the nation’s electronic voting machines as rife with fraud — without any evidence — and has suggested that the only way he would lose is if the election is rigged.

_(a)_________s cast ballots through electronic voting machines, a system that has been in place for over two decades and that has been the focus of Mr. _(b)_______’s claims about the risk of election rigging.

Last week, Mr. _(b)______’s political party issued a document claiming, without evidence, that a group of government employees and contractors had the “absolute power to manipulate election results without leaving a trace.”

The options:

Americans
Brazilians
(b)
Bolsonaro (RW)

One, important variable is being overlooked:  choice
The fear-mongering over the border/brown folks is being used in ads for Republicans, and, personal economies aren’t great due to inflation.
Some of that inflation is due to lack of labor.   We need a manageable, guest worker program.
If the message gets to migrants that they are helping Republicans gain/retain office, they may hold off coming to the border until after the election. Why, it’s almost like Republicans are promoting coming to the US border to help their little, show.   Almost.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/supreme-court-kill-voting-rights-act/

And, while Republicans are trying to keep everyone’s attention on the border, this abomination is happening.

“This term, the Supreme Court is hearing a case about whether Alabama’s newly drawn congressional maps violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits voting practices or procedures that discriminate on the basis of race.”

“The justices’ ruling could have implications that go far beyond Alabama, potentially neutering what remains of the Voting Rights Act…”

“…the court has grown increasingly hostile to the Voting Rights Act over the past few decades. The timing is not a coincidence. Roberts, who has been chief justice since 2005, has been critical of the law — and Section 2 — since he was a young government lawyer in the 1980s.”

“Since Roberts was sworn in, the Supreme Court has ruled on seven cases involving the Voting Rights Act, according to our analysis of data from the Supreme Court Database. In five of those cases, the ruling went in a conservative direction…”

patD- That Rolling Stone article should be on the national, must-read, list, you know, if we were a nation of readers.

Wall Street Journal rips Trump’s ‘death wish’ rhetoric | The Hill

The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board slammed former President Trump on Sunday, criticizinghis use of the term “death wish” in a weekend attack against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell(R-Ky.).
“We live in a polarized political age when rabid partisans don’t need provocation to resort to violence,” the board wrote. “This makes Donald Trump’slatest verbal assault against Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell all the more reckless.”
“[T]he ‘death wish’ rhetoric is ugly even by Mr. Trump’s standards and deserves to be condemned,” it added.
[…]
“Mr. Trump’s apologists claim he merely meant Mr. McConnell has a political death wish, but that isn’t what he wrote,” the Wall Street Journal editors wrote. “It’s all too easy to imagine some fanatic taking Mr. Trump seriously and literally, and attempting to kill Mr. McConnell. Many supporters took Mr. Trump’s rhetoric about former Vice President Mike Pence all too seriously on Jan. 6.”
The editorial also references Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who told The New York Times that she wouldn’t be surprised if a lawmaker gets killed amid a heightened threat environment.
[…]
The Journal’s editors wrote on Sunday that “Trump could be working and spending money to elect a GOP Congress, or to help his home state of Florida recover from Hurricane Ian.”
Instead he’s attacking Mr. McConnell and his wife as part of a personal political vendetta, and putting every Republican candidate on the spot to respond to questions about the Trump rant,” they added. “Mr. Trump always puts himself first, and with this rhetoric he may put others at genuine risk of harm.”

could be his wish is also meant to dampen the cult’s enthusiasm to vote so that mitch is denied becoming majority leader again.   the senator’s political death as leader (if not too the physical one) is undoubtedly what the vengeful former guy wishes and has been working on ever since the fiery floor speech and comments post jan6.

one state example of how the GOPers are working the crime issue – or dusting it off with reruns.

Democrat Hillary Scholten calls out ad claiming she ‘praised’ Grand Rapids rioters – mlive.com

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — In September 2020, Democrat Hillary Scholten was attacked during her first congressional campaign, by her then-opponent U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer, for being backed by riot sympathizers and “extremists” who favor defunding the police.
Two years later, those same attacks have resurfaced.

[…]

“It’s blatant lies,” Scholten, an immigration attorney from Grand Rapids, said in response to the ad. “We have seen extreme stretches of the truth, but we have never seen ads based on absolute lies before.”
[…]
The attack fits into a strategy playing out throughout the U.S. as Republicans try to portray Democrats as soft on crime, one expert said.
“I think it’s an ad that can resonate with voters,” said David Dulio, a political science professor at Oakland University. “It won’t resonate with all voters, but it will many. Crime is always an issue that is targeted at suburban voters, and I think this one is no different. You often see Republicans attack Democrats on it.”
Scholten’s record shows she did not, as her opponents claim, praise the rioters in Grand Rapids.
[…]
While Gibbs has taken aim at Scholten for her response to the Grand Rapids riot, she has called him out for his response to the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol.
She claimed Gibbs, who worked in the Trump administration as acting assistant secretary for community planning and development at HUD, has supported those who took part in the Jan. 6 riot, injuring more than 100 police officers.
One police officer who was attacked by rioters died the following day, while four others have died by suicide.
“The contrast here between who is a pro rule-of-law, a pro law enforcement candidate, and who is aligning themselves with violent extremists — this is just a contrast that could not be any starker,” Scholten said.
Gibbs has said many of the people present at the Jan. 6 attack were protesting peacefully, but that “those who have committed a crime should be punished fairly,” according to his campaign.

Supreme Court rejects Trump ally Mike Lindell’s appeal in 2020 election lawsuit (nbcnews.com)

The Supreme Court on Mondayrejected MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s bid to fend off a defamation lawsuit the voting machine company Dominion Voting Systems filed over his far-fetched claims about the 2020 presidential election.
The justices’ decision not to hear the case means a federal judge’s ruling in August 2021 that allowed the lawsuit to move forward remains in place.

Violent crimes, including deaths of police officers, have risen since Greg Abbott has been Governor of TX.

Police are against permitless carry.

Teachers are leaving due to being underpaid and nothing being done to make schools safer.

Parents are hesitant to send kids to public schools, knowing Greg has done nothing to make them safer.

Abbott has done nothing since Uvalde; nothing has changed.

Abbott/Patrick/Paxton have stripped away healthcare from women/girls.

There is absolutely no reason to keep any of the Texas Republicans in office.    They have one move – telling folks to be afraid of brown people at the border.   Never mind the opportunity to install a guest worker program (which would also help keep food costs stable); they are just racists who know fear mongeting works.

Women may pull the Dems through.  I think most will think it’s scarier to lose the right to bodily autonomy than anything else Republicans can concoct.

Beyond that, LP should air ads comparing Repugz to fascist dictators of the past and let folks know how that turned out for citizens of those countries.

https://www.texastribune.org/2022/10/03/rochelle-garza-ken-paxton-texas-attorney-general/

“. ..right now we have someone in the attorney general’s office who does not care about people, who does not care about our families.”

“I’m ready to beat criminally indicted Ken Paxton,” she shouted to loud cheers.

“Polls show the contest is the tightest of all statewide races. Garza, 37, is within single digits of Paxton…”

“The Democratic establishment “does seem reluctant to put money behind her campaign, even though it’s the closest race and Paxton has weaknesses that make him the most vulnerable of statewide office holders,” Jillson said. “So they’re hanging back.”

“Indirectly, Garza was helped by the messy, Republican primary and runoff that included many negative ads targeting Paxton.”

“These were Republicans in these ads saying, “I don’t trust Ken Paxton to be attorney general,” Burgan said. “These are people that Republican voters listen to.”

OK, so just use excepts from those ads to hammer Paxton.

“Armed with an Ivy League education, a law degree and bilingual skills, she likely could have cashed in with a high-paying job at a big law firm. But she was drawn back to the Valley.”

“She took a job with the American Bar Association representing unaccompanied minor children in immigration removal proceedings in Harlingen, near the Texas-Mexico border.”

when Garza was nine weeks pregnant. She was angry that “women were all being put in the situation where their health care was at risk,” she said.

“Pregnancy can be a very dangerous state,” she said. “You don’t know how things are going to go.”

Her anger helped propel her candidacy, she said. “Yes, I ran angry,” she said. “And I’m glad I did.’’

Abortion “is the biggest issue for all voters in this country. For women especially, it’s the biggest issue,” she said. “It’s more than a choice. It’s health care. And it’s more than health care, it’s your life. And I hear that on the campaign trail every day.’’

Ukraine rains fire on retreating Russians
https://www.politico.eu/article/ukraine-rains-fire-on-retreating-russia-putin-zelenskyy-war-lyman-kherson/

The second thrust comes in the south of the country, where Ukrainian soldiers have spent weeks pushing at thousands of Russians on the west side of the Dnipro River after a series of attacks on the few bridges crossing the river made resupplying them difficult.
In the last days, the Ukrainians have started to move.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/03/politics/scott-jennings-minnesota-schools-cat-litter-box/index.html

“The Republican candidate for governor of Minnesota repeated last week a bizarre hoax claim which has been debunked that children are being told they can identify as anthropomorphic cats and are being allowed to use litter boxes to urinate in schools.”

“Why are we telling elementary kids that they get to choose their gender this week? Why do we have litter boxes in some of the school districts so kids can pee in them, because they identify as a furry? We’ve lost our minds. We’ve lost our minds.”

“The unfounded internet rumor has been repeatedly denied by various school officials who have had to continuously dispute the false claims. Republican officials across the country have continued to cite it, most recently in Colorado by the Republican nominee for governor.”

Hilarious and sad.

Interesting opening statement for somwone accused of leading an attack on the Capitol on 1/6. (WaPo)

***

The lawyer for Jessica Watkins, the Ohio bar owner who is accused of leading one of the assaults on the Capitol on Jan. 6, said she became involved with the Oath Keepers out of her compulsion to protect people and had no role in planning for any attack on the Capitol.

Watkins had served in the Army but was discharged early, then served as a firefighter, her attorney Jonathan Crisp said. She started the Ohio State Regular Militia, Crisp said, because “she was a protest junkie. She wanted to go to protests and help law enforcement. She was a medic, she was there to help. She followed protest to protest to protest, that was her thing.”
***

Be  interesting to see how she thinks leading an assault on the Capitol was helping law enforcement.  Not sure whether that’s an “Oh, please” or and O, Really?” I wonder if she has a “Protests-R-Us” t-shirt.
