Sunday Serendipity

It was a busy Saturday, yard work to do, gardens to plan. For the first time my digging turned up earthworms. Spring is here. I almost forgot Sunday was coming.

I really enjoyed this rendition of Appalachian Spring I hope you do too.

jack, thanks.  truly beautiful.

however, my heart goes out to that bassoonist having to deal with such a cumbersome instrument while standing (and probably in high heels) for 24 + minutes.  at least they let the celloists sit.

[having had to march in many a high school band parade trying to play an instrument and move at the same time for many miles & minutes, i well know the feeling]

if it’s spring it must be cherry blossom time and one of those parades i had to march in back in the olden days.

happy 110th birthday to it today.

wiki:

The National Cherry Blossom Festivalis a spring celebration inWashington, D.C., commemorating the March 27, 1912, gift ofJapanese cherry treesfrom MayorYukio OzakiofTokyo Cityto the city of Washington, D.C. Mayor Ozaki gave the trees to enhance the growing friendship between the United States and Japan and also celebrate the continued close relationship between the two nations. Large and colorful helium balloons, floats, marching bands from across the country, music and showmanship are parts of the Festival’s parade and other events.

patd – interesting that you bring up band.  The Boat Ladies Wine Club has decided to start a band.  Cathy would like to pick up bagpipes, I bought a trumpet case and mouthpiece, the trumpet was free. I would like to give a performance soon, possible songs would be Smoke on the Water or perhaps Theme from a Summer Place.

I’ll be watching Oscars with my usual bottle of champagne to toast the winner.  Just hoping it isn’t Power of the Dog since I’m rooting for Belfast.

Learning the bagpipe line to Mustang Sally could be a challenge for a novice piper.

BB, yeah bagpipes will surely get the boat ladies rocking.  that and a few gimlets

Live at the Spancirfestival 2010 in Varazdin, Croatia: great stage, huge audience and the band in a Let´s rock the crowd -mood. The all-time Rock Classic together with the inofficial Scotish anthem was one of the highlights of their 90 minutes show. Josy performing with fire, Harry with flamethrower on his bass guitar, Gwendolen and John rocking with bagpipes, fans of Lukas dancing next to the drums and Gajus again as Lord of the strings..

a tidbit on gimlets from wiki:

The derivation of the name of the cocktail is contested. It may be named after the tool for drilling small holes (alluding to its “piercing” effect on the drinker) or after the surgeon Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Gimlette (27 November 1857 – 4 October 1943), who is said to have first added lime cordial to gin to help combat the ravages of scurvy on long voyages.

Yeah… the snow is gone from southern NH…  but we’re getting a cold spell again.  Gonna be in the teens for a few mornings this upcoming week.  Can’t wait to flip the calendar over on Friday!

I will be bringing my sound proofs I used to use on the rifle range so we are not distracted by noise.  I have never played the trumpet before and Cathy has never played the bagpipes.  I think we will do okay as long as we don’t have to listen to ourselves.

Mustang Sally, that means we might need something like an accordion or flute too.

Just in case anyone doesn’t know the lyrics to today’s section:   “I’m bringing home a baby bumblebee.”

Will Z speak tonight?

Will Rusher be forced to pay for rebuilding the damage in infrastructure in Ukraine? There’s no money fix for the human death and misery. Hope any generals who still on this side of the dirt, do the world a favor and disappear Vlad.

A profile in Jell-O

Former Fox News anchor Chris Wallace shed light on his reason for leaving the network late last year, saying it had grown increasingly difficult to reconcile some of the opinions being expressed by its top hosts.
“I just no longer felt comfortable with the programming at Fox,” Wallace told The New York Times in his first interview since his departure. “I’m fine with opinion: conservative opinion, liberal opinion … But when people start to question the truth — Who won the 2020 election? Was Jan. 6 an insurrection? — I found that unsustainable.”

The number that puts Vladimir Putin at risk

Opinion by , CNN National Security Analyst, CNN National Security Analyst

Updated 5:04 PM EDT, Sun March 27, 2022

The official Soviet death toll during the Afghan War, which lasted more than nine years, was around 15,000 soldiers. It is therefore quite telling that the Russians may have already lost as many 15,000 soldiers in just one month in Ukraine, according to estimates given to CNN by senior NATO officials.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/24/opinions/russian-troops-ukraine-war-putin-at-risk/index.html

He’s all in , he’s got no more troops to send , and given the wounded to dead ratio  that war brings.  He’s nearing losing a third of his army in one month.
I have to believe  his generals are nearing the point where they will not follow him into the furnace .

As the Bergan op-ed points out , when the Soviets  rolled out of Afghanistan , the Wall came down.

Some times your the windshield , sometimes your the bug .

Which reminds me that New Chrome virus’s name would make a rock band  name ………… One Bad Bug . Or a song, or an album title.  It sticks in the ear.

The new NBC poll  forecasts a dark November.
And Biden looks more and more feckless, just because he said what we all know.  A great speech ignored  by one line.
I have to agree with Musk on this one, gerontocracy is a problem.
Our elected government is the only place where being old won’t get you laid-off.

How Joe Manchin Aided Coal, and Earned Millions

At every step of his political career, Joe Manchin helped a West Virginia power plant that is the sole customer of his private coal business. Along the way, he blocked ambitious climate action.

Read this Mixers .
Ole’ Coal Joe is just another corporate whore.

Can we stop using the term “moderate” and his name in the same breath ?

I used to buy coal  in Salida  to heat the sheep shack that first winter.  There were 2 grades  pure coal , and “clinker”.
“Clinker”  had bands of shale embedded in the coal .
The more “clinker” in the seams the dirtier the smoke.
Ole Coal Joe’s mine produces  “gop” .  The lowest grade of the fuel .  I had never heard this term until tonight.
But I know what it means .  His Power Plant burns some of the poorest fuel in America.
They don’t just burn shale , but they burn mud along with the coal.
If one thinks about combustion , shale and very very old mud  are not your first choice in your fuel supply.

The War of the Worlds
Funny how  that has changed , we got a helicopter flying around on Mars , by the way it just made it’s 27th flight .
But here on our home planet we battle over our past , and our future.  That is ” The War of the Worlds ” .
And at speed we are moving , the past we are hanging on to is about 15 minutes .
Only if we can pry the cold dead hand off the rudder of our future.

Here’s something we need to get ready for  “Food”.

Again this will expose  how close we were 3 years ago.
That this we cannot go on , that is containers of sneakers  floating in he Pacific.
The entire idea of world trade  is under assault.
And we are a greedy lazy people.  This will not be easy.
That world is dead as Stalin.
