Biden Bends On Filibuster

“I also think we’re going to have to move to the point where we fundamentally alter the filibuster,” President Biden said last night during CNN’s town hall. It remains to be seen what “fundamentally altering it” means, he adds.

“I think they make a very good point” says Biden about those calling for reforming the filibuster to protect voting rights.

Biden said if he makes a push now to change filibuster rules, “I lose at least three votes” to get his larger economic agenda done. Also says there will “be an awful lot of Democrats” who would be open to changing filibuster to raise the debt limit.

Anderson Cooper: “When it comes to voting rights, you would entertain the notion of doing away with the filibuster on that one issue? Is that correct?”

BIDEN: “And maybe more.”

“the arc of history bends toward justice” as martin would say

Maybe everyone (Dems) in states with party-line primary ballots should vote in the Repug primary and throw a spammer into the works. Any Dem is better than any Repug. Why not mess with them? Split votes so badly that they’ll need run-offs and attack each other, making the eventual winner weaker in the general because of the dirt that’s been thrown at them.

these slivers of hope — like filibuster change, build back better bill on its way —  are setting us up once more for lucy to pull the football away and ruin charlie brown’s day

Former U.S. Democratic Senator and current MSNBC Political Analyst Claire McCaskill says her sources on Capitol Hill are telling her that Arizona Democrat Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has agreed to a plan that would fund Pres. Biden’s infrastructure and social agenda. Democrats on the Hill tell reporters the framework for that Biden agenda deal could come soon.

wapo:

Tens of millions of Americans can sign up to get Moderna and Johnson & Johnson boosters beginning Friday after the nation’s top public health official endorsed recommendations from expert advisers that the shots are safe and effective at bolstering protection against the coronavirus.
The green light from Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, means that eligible Americans at risk of severe disease can choose any of the three boosters now authorized in the United States regardless of their original shot.
“The evidence shows that all three COVID-19 vaccines authorized in the United States are safe — as demonstrated by the over 400 million vaccine doses already given,” Walensky said in a statement Thursday night, several hours after receiving unanimous recommendations from the expert panel, called the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. “And, they are all highly effective in reducing the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death, even in the midst of the widely circulating delta variant.”

a poem for vikings day

[apologies to jean marzollo’s “In 1492” poem and any plagiarism below]

in ten hundred twenty-one
chris columbus was outdone

vikings had a boat or two
in which they sailed the ocean blue

norsemen all, swede and dane
sailed through sunshine, wind and rain

they rowed by night, they sailed by day,
they used the stars to find their way

no compass helped them know
how to find the way to go

unlike chris no hi-tech trick
would guide them to their harbor pick

Biden oughta just say ok, screw it and start campaigning for the midterms and blame it all on the stooges.
“We need reinforcements. You see what we could get done with the majority being all dems.  You see what we did with the COVID even with the gop assholes gumming up everything. (I’ve heard he curses like a sailer off camera lol) Elect Democrats or the billionaires and the klan win.  Elect Democrats and give humanity and democracy a fighting chance.”

What Ms. Bronc said.  I got Pfizer boosted at 7 months – which was the first day it was available here and I could arrange for a shot. Mrs. P is due and now can do the mix and match thing.

the guardian:

A reporter asked Jen Psaki whether Joe Biden is discouraged by how his reconciliation package has been scaled down from $3.5tn to between $1.5tn and $2tn, due to demands from moderates like Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema.

In response, the press secretary reiterated some of the president’s comments during his CNN town hall last night, saying, “Compromise is not a dirty word.”

Acknowledging Democrats’ very narrow majorities in both the House and the Senate, Psaki added, “The alternative is not a larger package; the alternative is nothing. So his objective is to continue to press forward to bring the parties together to get a historic package done.”

Democrats move to finalize new ‘billionaire’ tax plan, targeting 700 wealthiest Americans as key source of revenue for spending plan – The Washington Post

[…]
Now, an unexpected compromise appears to be emerging over the billionaire tax proposal. Senate Finance Chair Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) is drafting the plan, but both senior Biden officials and other senior Democrats are cautiously optimistic Sinema and other centrist lawmakers support the effort, according to interviews with three congressional aides and two administration officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to reflect sensitive negotiations.
“The Billionaires Income Tax is about fairness and showing the American people taxes aren’t mandatory for them and optional for the wealthiest people in the country,” Wyden said in a statement. “No working person in this country thinks it’s right that billionaires can pay no taxes for years on end, and sometimes never at all.”
The proposal would be incorporated into the reconciliation bill that Democrats hope to pass soon and could would help offset the roughly $2 trillion the bill is likely to spend over 10 years on a variety of new federal programs.
The administration recently briefed congressional Democrats on a series of other new sources of revenue that would raise trillions of dollars without increasing the corporate tax rate. Those include higher tax enforcement through the Internal Revenue Service and a new 15 percent minimum tax on corporations, among other measures.
The billionaire plan still faces obstacles. House Democrats in particular have balked at it, given they already advanced a roughly $2 trillion tax package that included rate hikes on the rich and on corporations. Some tax experts are also wary of creating a complicated new system of taxation in a matter of days. House Ways and Means Chair Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.) said the Wyden plan could “become really complex.”

I occasionally mention that I mess with the social media and search companies algorithms for fun and happiness.  I touched something because the last two days I am getting things in German.  This is interesting because I have not searched for anything German, including German grocery stores, in quite long time.  What is not good is that I did read a little from a book written in German, out loud, to my critters.  Similar is that a few weeks ago I was talking about Budgies (English and Australian) while in my cat’s vet office, and suddenly on FB there was something about Budgies, which refreshed to American parakeets, same ad.  I apparently have a spy, not my usual friends from Russia, but American spy.

Now the search for the nasty spy. I do not have the easy suspects enabled, alexa and whatever the others are, but that means nothing in this world of money.  I can eliminate a few computers, no microphones or they are running Linux.  A couple computers are possibles.  I have three cell phones, two of which are suspect, one I had with me at the vets office.

So what do I do?  Easy. I make a few aluminum foil bags and put things in them.  I will talk about strange things that I have not talked out loud before. Say how to mine diamonds in the Congo. But out loud. These spies are not as sophisticated as what I am used to so metal bags are very useful.  I will follow up if anything interesting happens.

Back to Pre -K  for 3,4, and 5 year olds,
All the research  shows  that the growth in the human brain takes place in these years  . About 90 % by age 6.
The kids that get this education go on to be kinds of people we need. They carry it through out their lives.
And working parents can save up to $24,000  a year in child care.

This is real tipping point .

Ah, Tony, my man. Takes me back to the good old days about 13 years ago. Those were the days – days dissing Mark Penn for fucking up a perfectly good chance to win the primary and likely put an insanely qualified female in the White House for the first time. Oh well.

Goats –
You got to love em.  First they have crazy eyes . Second they are goats.  They live by goat rules. Third their babies  are crazy cute. Fourth they make cheese, and fifth  their meat is wonderful.
They eat a wide range  of plants , that cattle never touch,
They don’t fart methane  like cows.
Their skins  have made drum heads for thousands of years.

OM, the choice was just fine in retrospect. I ended up being a huge fan of Mr. Obama. IMHO it was transformative. Black man, white woman … neither had been there before, so ….
As much as I was disappointed at the time, I came to understand that the choice made by the Democrats was a – or the – correct one. Unfortunately I’m afraid it in part gave us what followed. Regardless, either might have.
Oh, and goats?  Love their cheese and the kids are indeed adorable.

“A “bomb cyclone” with hurricane-like strength and a chart-topping “atmospheric river” will coincide Saturday night into Sunday to unleash flooding rains, wet snow, strong winds and coastal surf across the western US.“

“In addition to the bomb cyclone, California will have to contend with a rare level 5 atmospheric river event.
“An atmospheric river marked as a category 4 or a 5 is capable of producing remarkable rainfall totals over three or more days, likely to exceed 10% to 15% of a typical year’s precipitation …”
