Marlette cartoon: Florida passes 50,000 COVID deaths

back in august the gov sent out a fundraising letter declaring in part: “Joe Biden has the nerve to tell me to get out of the way on COVID while he lets COVID-infected migrants pour over our southern border by the hundreds of thousands.”

that and other desanities inspired responses like this:

Florida Gov DeSantis Blames COVID Delta Variant on Mexicans | by Johnny Robish | The Haven | Aug, 2021 | Medium

Facing criticism over his anti-mask mandates, as his state is leading the nation with nearly 20% of all new US coronavirus cases, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis first accused the media of hysteria and fear-mongering, then blamed Mexican immigrants for the spike in COVID cases and deaths. DeSantis went on to declare wearing face masks — a “symbol of tyranny and child abuse.”
No kidding? The governor of Florida is worried about his Mexican border? Who knew they had one? I sure didn’t, but then again — I never took a geography class in Florida. That said, apparently asking questions about Florida’s massive COVID infection rates, must be a real sore spot for the governor. ….
Anyway, I guess Gov. DeSantis is a believer in that old adage, “when the going gets tough, the tough blame Mexicans.” And boy, is this little Trump wannabe — ever trying to be the tough guy! So, much so, that he’s now considered by many in the GOP to be among the best of the best Republicans have to offer for 2024. Just let that sink in for a moment.

meanwhile on the hill:

[…]

After a long day of meetings between Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the warring centrist and progressive factions of the caucus, as well as with White House staff, Democrats opted to delay a vote planned for Thursday rather than allow an embarrassing public failure on the House floor.

A notice from House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer‘s (D-Md.) office issued shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday confirmed that there would be no further votes for the night. The House is expected to reconvene Friday morning as the negotiations continue.

Pelosi, leaving the Capitol just after midnight on Friday, suggested the infrastructure vote will take place later in the day.

“There’ll be a vote today,” she said. When pressed if the vote is definitive, however, she left some wiggle room: “We’ll see.”

[…]

“We’re in good-faith negotiations,” Manchin said.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said after House leadership pulled the bill that Democrats “are closer to an agreement than ever.”

“But we are not there yet, and so, we will need some additional time to finish the work, starting tomorrow morning first thing,” she added.

Centrists expressed frustration that the vote had been delayed once again.

Rep. Cindy Axne (Iowa), one of the most vulnerable Democrats heading into the 2022 midterm elections, said in a statement that “all-at-once or nothing is no way to govern.”

“When Iowans tell me they are sick of Washington games, this is what they mean,” Axne said.

Greg Sargent, in this case.

As expected, the postponement of the vote is being treated as a “crushing blow” and a “huge setback” to Biden’s agenda. Utterly ludicrous. Such things happen all the time with complex legislation. This kind of coverage, which masquerades as savvy, is the opposite of savvy. 1/

I do not believe yesterday was a good day for either progressives, moderates, democrats or the people who elected them. I also doubt that any movement to bridge the differences between Senate moderates and House progressives has occurred. Nancy may get the progressives to support the smaller bill by promising motion in the spring on the parts of their preferred bill that aren’t in it, but they aren’t going to get what they demand today and I believe they are further jeopardizing control of Congress in 2022.

Sturg, let’s see whether the house progressives compromise on the bill. I cannot see Manchin doing it.

Not for lack of trying to kill Texans, but Greg and Dan are number two.

Heads up! The border situation will have a huge impact on the election. Folks are somewhat numb to covid news, but they are scared to death of poor, brown humans, especially if they don’t speak English. Sad, but true.

BiD, it’s good that administration is wholesale vaccinating the afghani refugees just for that reason. one less obstacle for them to face when they relocate to new homes across the country.

Ron DeSantis Says He Won’t Run for President Because He’s Busy Fighting Critical Race Theory (businessinsider.com)

DeSantis made this statement during an interview with the Fox News host Sean Hannity.

“I’m not considering anything beyond doing my job. We got a lot of stuff going on in Florida. I’m going to be running for reelection next year,” DeSantis said in reply to Hannity’s question on whether he was considering a presidential run.

“We are also working on a lot of things in the state beyond the governor’s race. We got school-board races,” DeSantis added. “I want to make sure people are not supporting critical race theory, making sure that parents have the ability to send their kid to school the way they want to.”

so what about a run at bootlicking veep, ron?

patd, deinsanity did not rule out a presidential run.  He was asked a yes/no question about whether he was considering a presidential run 3 years from now and pivoted from that question and answered the unasked questions about whether he was running for re-election as governor and whether he was battling the teaching of critical race theory.  he answered those questions directly even though Hannity didn’t ask them, but with respect to the question Hannity did ask and kept his options open.

Senate confirms Tracy Stone-Manning as Bureau of Land Management director in party-line vote

Tracy Stone-Manning faced Republican opposition over her role in a tree-spiking case in 1989

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Tracy Stone-Manning to be the director of the Bureau of Land Management in a party-line vote, amid intense opposition from Republicans over her involvement three decades ago with environmental activists who sabotaged an Idaho timber sale.

She was confirmed by a 50-to-45 vote.
[…]

Stone-Manning is a prominent Montana-based environmentalist who works on conservation policy at the National Wildlife Federation. Earlier in her career she led Montana’s Department of Environmental Quality, and worked as an aide for Sen. Jon Tester (D) and former governor Steve Bullock (D).

But it was her time as a graduate student at the University of Montana that has attracted the most attention during the nomination process.

Republicans seized on her involvement in a 1989 tree-spiking incident intended to block logging of a patch of the Clearwater National Forest in Idaho. At the time, Stone-Manning retyped and mailed an anonymous letter on behalf of an acquaintance warning the U.S. Forest Service that metal spikes had been hammered into the trees, a tactic dangerous to loggers if struck by chain saws.

Stone-Manning’s testimony during the subsequent trial helped send two people to prison, and she was granted immunity. She testified she sent the letter to warn authorities so people wouldn’t get hurt.

Republicans called her a radical who collaborated with eco-terrorists.

In a speech to the Senate on Thursday, Sen. Cynthia M. Lummis (R-Wyo.) described Stone-Manning as “one of the most egregious nominations to ever receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.”

“It’s hard to believe, but she has colluded with eco-terrorists, plain and simple,” said Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), who held up a metal spike during his Senate speech. “She stonewalled a criminal investigation for years. She lied to the Senate. And she still holds radically dangerous views and yet she is still the nominee of the president of the United States for this very important post. It is outrageous.”
* * *

Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), the chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said he was “unable to find any credible evidence in the exhaustive trial record of the tree-spiking case that supports the allegations levied against Miss Stone-Manning.”

Instead, he said, he found “compelling evidence that Miss Stone-Manning has built a solid reputation over the past three decades as a dedicated public servant.”

Stone-Manning’s former boss, Tester, described her as someone who “understands that the way you get things done is be collaborative, bring people together, talk issues out.”

“The truth is Tracy Stone-Manning did nothing wrong. And in fact, the people who went to jail went to jail because of Tracy Stone-Manning,” Tester said.

“The facts don’t back up what the claims are,” he added. “And the character assassination is not something you should be proud of.”
* * *

So she warns the USFS about the spikes (no evidence she was involved in putting them in the trees), testifies against the folks who did and they go to jail. Outrageious.

dem big tent even big enough for *schmucks it seems. we already know the GOPers have plenty both schmucks and cowards so why not dems.

the hill:

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) in a Friday tweet called the “live-leaker” who sent the press details about the House Democratic Caucus’ meeting while it was happening a “schmuck” and “coward.”

The California Democrat said that the member who was live-leaking information to Punchbowl News reporter Jake Sherman apparently likes the narrative that the House Democratic Caucus is in disarray.

“Far more unity than “disarray” among House Democrats right now, though our caucus meeting today was a master class in eloquent ambiguity. That’s necessary in part because one of our members is live leaking to @JakeSherman because they apparently like the disarray narrative,” Huffman tweeted, referencing a founder and reporter for Punchbowl News.

“Let me be really clear:  I love most of my colleagues, but that particular live-leaker is a schmuck.  And a coward,” he continued.

In response, to Huffman’s tweet, Sherman said “no. They like transparency.”

“Somehow I knew you would say that.  Love the Punchbowl BTW,” Huffman responded back.

*for the etymology buffs out there, wiki on schmuck:

Schmuck, or shmuck, is a pejorative term meaning one who is stupid or foolish, or an obnoxious, contemptible or detestable person. The word came into the English language from Yiddish, where it has similar pejorative meanings, but where its literal meaning is a vulgar term for a penis.

Gut punch time.  Mucking around in Hulu I came across MASH.  I just watched the pilot of the television series and jesus alou! First is the era and my military time (Vietnam is when I served).  Second is how long ago that was, so very long ago.  And finally how many of the actors are no longer around.  There is a reason I stopped watching it decades ago.

“Only by supporting that bill can Manchin lead West Virginia boldly into the clean-energy future that will help the people he has been elected to serve.“

“By holding up the reconciliation bill, the senator is jeopardizing funds necessary to uplift West Virginia’s economic outlook and resilience at a time when the state is grappling with the country’s lowest life expectancy and one of its highest poverty rates .“

“In order to ensure the economy and communities of West Virginia survive the energy transition, we need to pass both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the reconciliation bill. Taking into account key provisions from Biden’s infrastructure plan, The Center for Energy and Sustainable Development at WVU Law School modeled a “Clean Innovation Pathway” that would allow West Virginia to rely largely on emission-free power.“

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/10/01/nursing-homes-staffing-woes/

“We know we are going to lose additional staff when that vaccine mandate comes out,” said Becky Anderson, head of clinical operations for Focused Post Acute Care Partners, which runs 31 nursing homes and employs about 2,500 workers in Texas. “We just have some staff that are very adamant that they will not get the vaccine.’”

I’m at the point where the unvaccinated should just crawl in a hole and die if they get sick.

A friend’s BIL died of a heart attack yesterday. He died in a hospital hallway because of the idiot, unvaccinated covid patients had taken all of the beds.

I feel no sorrow for the illness or death of a single, unvaccinated idiot. They brought it in themselves. They are continuing the spread and possible mutation of the virus. They are a public health nuisance. Lock them up at home.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/01/politics/new-york-vaccine-school-sotomayor/index.html

“Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Friday denied a request from a group of New York City teachers to block the city’s vaccine mandate for public school employees. Sotomayor did not refer the request to the other Supreme Court justices, or comment on her action, likely signaling they agreed with her decision. In August, Justice Amy Coney Barrett likewise rejected an effort to block Indiana University’s vaccine mandate.”

If you’re stupid enough to refuse a vaccine that could save your life and protect your students’ health, you aren’t smart enough to teach.
